The miners were taken to the Copiapo Hospital in Chile, where they were treated for various health issues. In a press conference, Health Minister Jaime Manalich (Mañalich in Spanish) stated that the condition of all the miners is good. He also explained that the miners must rest and start taking vitamins. “Everything is going great,” he said. “They are better than expected.” At press time Wednesday (Oct. 13), 26 were out and the remaining miners were still being rescued. The world’s major news media outlets are covering the rescue, including the BBC, CNN and El Pais from Spain. Pinera was expecting the rescue to be completed Wednesday. “I’m going to stay here until the last miner is out,” Pinera said. Several people has given its opinion in regards this matter stating that this should be a warning for all those countries who have mines. “I’ve worked in the mining industry and I know it is very hard and dangerous. And I’ve heard on TV that in that site, the materials, equipment and the condition of the place were bad and as old as 19th century mines,” Sissi Aguirre, an Overland Park resident said. On Oct. 14, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released a statement expressing their appreciation to those who contributed to the rescue.

Localmente, como en todo el país, las propiedades colindantes a menudo ostentan pancartas de candidatos rivales y posiciones opuestas en asuntos. Raras veces, la división política ocasiona enemistad grave o irreparable entre los vecinos, especialmente entre aquellos de mucho tiempo. Si no hay nada más, ellos invierten en mantener intacto el entramado social del vecindario. Y están dispuestos a aceptar, o al menos tolerar el hecho de que el diferir en puntos de vista políticos expresa las ideas e intereses diversos que sustentan nuestro sistema bipartidista. En agosto pasado, el líder de la mayoría en el Senado de EE.UU., Harry Reid, dijo ante una gran audiencia hispana durante una parada de campaña que él no sabía cómo cualquier persona de herencia hispana podía ser republicana. Rápidamente, los hispanos republicanos reprendieron al demócrata. Sus comentarios fueron engañosos y condescendientes y aumentan los estereotipos desinformados. Alfonso Aguilar, Jefe de la Sociedad Latina por los Principios Conservadores dejó en claro que los votantes hispanos no tienen una mentalidad de rebaño. Ellos apoyan a candidatos que comparten sus valores personales y creencias. Los hispanos son demócratas, republicanos, independientes, libertarios y más. Las diferencias políticas pueden y se insinúan en las familias hispanas y las relaciones personales cercanas. Llevadas al extremo, pueden crear una ruptura amarga. Como mínimo, alteran sutilmente el interior del hogar. Por otro lado, contaminar las reuniones familiares con pleitos partidistas contenciosos no sirve para ningún propósito útil. En lugar de eso, se corre el riesgo de herir los sentimientos y tensar los vínculos familiares. Descartar a desconocidos en base a diferencias políticas es una cosa. Ridiculizar a los seres queridos por sus creencias profundamente arraigadas y puntos de vista políticos es impensable en nuestra cultura latina. Existe un remedio para cada situación en algún lugar continuo entre discutir sobre política y evitar el tema por completo. Si es posible el diálogo reflexivo--y todos están de acuerdo--es útil establecer las reglas. Emplee el humor, escuche activamente y muestre respeto hacia la otra persona y sus opiniones políticas. Reconozca cuando otros dan un punto válido, aún cuando esté en desacuerdo. Reconozca el derecho de la otra persona a tener sus propias convicciones. Evite los ataques personales, ridiculizar, los comentarios despectivos y el lenguaje ofensivo. Manténgase en el tema. Acepte el no estar de acuerdo. Trate de entender el punto de vista de su oponente, en vez de intimidarlo para que cambie. Recuerde, nadie está totalmente mal ni totalmente bien todo el tiempo. Mantenga la discusión en perspectiva y tenga en mente que su afecto e intereses mutuos no dependen del estar de acuerdo políticamente. En aras de la armonía familiar o para salvar una estrecha relación personal, es mejor evitar por completo los intercambios políticos en algunas situaciones. Eso incluye conversaciones sutilmente politizadas sobre otros temas. El partidismo es el eje de nuestro sistema político, no un catalizador para la discordia familiar, divorcio o disolución de una amistad. Como escribió el eminente profesor de Humanidades y Leyes de la Universidad Internacional de Florida en Miami, Stanley Fish: “La política es bipartidista por definición” “ser político significa creer en algo”. Cada uno de nosotros tenemos derecho a nuestras creencias. Aceptar eso como el tema de ésta y cada una de las temporadas de elecciones no superará la división política, pero asegurará que las relaciones valiosas no caigan en enfrentamientos de ideologías políticas.
Emotional bonds trump politics
A
cross the Kansas City area, political yard signs speckle the landscape. Locally, as around the country, adjoining properties often flaunt signs advertising rival candidates and opposing issue positions. Seldom does the political divide cause grievous or irreparable enmity between neighbors, especially long-standing neighbors. If nothing else, they’re invested in keeping the neighborhood’s social fabric intact. They’re willing to embrace – or at least tolerate – the fact that differing political views express differing ideas and interests underpinning our two-party system. Back in August, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told a largely Hispanic audience during a campaign stop that he didn’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican. Hispanic Republicans promptly took the Democrat to task. His remark was specious and condescending and amounted to uninformed stereotyping. Alfonso Aguilar, head of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, made it clear that Hispanic voters don’t have a herd mentality. They support candidates who share their personal values and beliefs. Hispanics are Democrats, Republicans, independents, Libertarians and more. Political differences can and do insinuate themselves into Hispanic families and close personal relationships. Taken to the extreme, they can create a bitter breach. At minimum, they can subtly alter the domestic landscape. On the one hand, infecting family gatherings with contentious partisan bickering serves no useful purpose. Rather, it risks hurting feelings and straining familial bonds. Dismissing outsiders on the grounds of political differences is one thing. Deriding loved ones for their deeply held beliefs and political views is unthinkable in Latino culture. There’s a remedy for each situation somewhere on the continuum between arguing politics and avoiding the subject altogether. If thoughtful conversation is possible and everyone’s agreeable, it’s helpful to establish ground rules. Use humor and active listening and demonstrate respect for the other person and her or his political views. Acknowledge when others make a valid point, even if you disagree with it. Recognize the other person’s right to her or his convictions. Avoid personal attacks, ridicule, derogatory comments and offensive language. Stay on topic. Agree to disagree. Try to understand your opponent’s point of view, instead of browbeating your opponent into changing it. Remember, no one’s all wrong, and no one’s all right all the time. Keep the discussion in perspective. Bear in mind that your mutual affection and mutual interests don’t depend on political accord. In the interest of family harmony or to guard a close personal relationship, it’s best to avoid political exchanges in some situations altogether. That includes subtly politicizing the conversation on other topics. Partisanship is the linchpin of our political system, not a catalyst for family discord, divorce or friendship dissolution. As Stanley Fish, the eminent professor of humanities and law at Florida International University in Miami, wrote: “Politics is partisan by definition” and “to be political is to believe in something.” We’re each entitled to our beliefs. Embracing that as the theme of this and every election season won’t bridge the political divide, but it’ll ensure that precious relationships don’t fall prey to clashes in political ideology.

n 2001, el restaurante Margarita’s empezó a colocar su salsa para totopos en los anaqueles de los supermercados del área de Kansas City. Desde entonces, los consumidores han quedado enganchados a ella – y no sólo en el área de Kansas City. La salsa Margarita’s para totopos se ha convertido en la tercera más vendida en el área, tan sólo después de Tostitos y Pace. Su distribución se ha expandido a estados como Iowa y Ohio. Además, también ha expandido su lista de productos para incluir una salsa de queso y enchilada. Todo comenzó cuando Sam Paris, Director de Mercadotecnia de Paris Brothers Specialty Foods, probó la salsa Margarita’s. “Simplemente me encantó la forma en que hacían su salsa”, dijo. Entonces, Paris pensó en colocarla en los estantes de las tiendas de abarrotes. “Yo sabía que iba ser difícil, pero Margaritas era diferente y todos empezaron a quererla”, refirió. n 2001, Margarita’s Restaurant started putting its chips sauce on Kansas City area supermarket shelves. Since then, consumers have been hooked on it – and not just in the Kansas City area. Margarita’s chips sauce has become in the No. 3-selling s a u c e in the area, just behind To s t i t o s and Pace. Its distributionhas expanded to such states as Iowa and Ohio. In addition, Margarita’s also has expanded its list of products to include a queso and enchilada sauce. It all started when Sam Paris, Paris Brothers Specialty Foods marketing director, tried Margarita’s chips sauce. “I just loved the way they made their sauce,” Paris said. Paris then thought of putting Margarita’s chips sauce on grocery store shelves. “I knew it was going to be hard, but Margaritas was different and everyone started loving it,” he said. Paris talked to Margarita’s owners, who agreed to join in a partnership and share the sauce’s recipe. “We have tried really hard with this product. It has a good price and good flavor,” Paris said. “It is great to have … on your table, and it is the same taste that you have at the restaurant.” As expansion projects, Paris thinks the sauce will have a tremendous success in states such as Arizona, Texas, New York and California. “It has been successful because of the taste,” Paris said. “I’m very proud, but I’m not done yet.”

The district takes in Johnson and Wyandotte counties and part of Douglas County covering eastern Lawrence, Eudora, De Soto and Bonner Springs. Oct. 18 is the deadline in Kansas to register to
vote in the Nov. 2 election. Dos Mundos spoke at length with Yoder and Moore on jobs, education and immigration, particularly the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. Yoder’s decision was motivated by the federal legislative body’s persistent failings. “It’s time for new leadership to step up and change things in Washington, D.C.,” he said. “I think most of us are tired of broken promises and failed leadership. On jobs and the economy
“Every day in Congress, I’m going to focus on economic growth and rebuilding the country,” he said. Citing mass unemployment, Yoder outlined his three-prong strategy for creating a thriving climate for business, particularly small businesses. He would seek bipartisan support for instituting stable, consistent federal policies that would include making the current tax rate permanent; boosting access to capital by lifting barriers on community banks; and lifting excessive federal regulations and taxes inhibiting growth and investment, for which small business bears the lion’s share. “We can’t get the country growing again without getting entrepreneurs and small businesses growing,” Yoder said. Yoder also calls for reducing government spending and eliminating bureaucratic waste, guided by a top-to-bottom review of every department and its budget. “Ultimately, by fine-tuning our government spending, we can produce better government services” at a lower cost, he said.
On education
As he did in Topeka, Yoder would push for restoring local control of public schools, nominal federal interference and bureaucracy and an end to unfunded federal mandates. “Local communities – school boards, teachers, parents – are best suited to make education decisions for their children,” Yoder said. “But what we see as decisions get taken farther and farther away from them are decisions that are less effective and less capable of resolving our educational concerns.” Yoder also urged smarter spending, pointing out that despite passing a 1-cent sales tax hike in July to fund state services, Kansas schools are still struggling. “I don’t think running our neighborhood public schools out of Washington or Topeka is as effective as running them out of our neighborhoods,” he said.
On immigration and the DREAM Act
Yoder assailed Washington’s failure to overhaul the nation’s immigration system that he characterized as “chaotic, ineffective and not working for U.S. interests nor people hoping to immigrate” and secure the border. “Comprehensive immigration reform should be one of the top priorities of the next Congress,” he said. If elected, Yoder would push for securing the borders, creating a legal process that works for Americans and aspiring Americans and modifying policies that incentivize illegal behavior and send conflicting messages to potential immigrants. Yoder opposes the stand-alone DREAM Act in favor of comprehensive immigration reform.

cation. “They’re all interlinking and all top priorities,” Moore said. “If you want good-paying jobs, you have to fund public schools. Businesses locate where there are good schools.”

Moore supports creating a business-friendly climate, but her approach involves small business tax incentives, clean energy jobs initiatives and more job-training programs. “Congress can’t create jobs, but it can help by offering tax incentives and policies that encourage businesses to start and expand to create good-paying jobs,” she said. Moore outlined her two-part strategy for shrinking the national debt, which includes balancing the budget and cutting government waste. “One of the very first things I would do is say to every member of Congress, ‘Take a 10 percent pay cut,’ ” she said. “Then I would reduce waste. A big chunk of that are earmarks.” Moore would push for greater transparency around congressional earmarks to foster judicious spending and responsible stewardship by lawmakers seeking financing for projects in their districts.

Savings from spending cuts in some federal programs and a provision that proponents claimed closed a tax loophole for U.S.-based multinational corporations financed the measure. “The role of Congress in public schools is small, but the impact is huge,” Moore said.

We hurt ourselves by discouraging people who want to work to improve their lives and ours,” she said, adding that temporary visas for scientists merit special consideration. Pointing out that a bill can change between the House and Senate, Moore wouldn’t commit to the DREAM Act. “We want everyone to be educated, but it has to be part of a comprehensive package – and I won’t commit until I know exactly what the bill is,” she said.

The profession took Ramos by storm during her senior year at Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kansas City, Kan. Since then, it’s exerted a growing inuence on her, driving most of her activities and affording her an opportunity to test her decision. Ramos enrolled as a pre-nursing major at the University of Kansas (KU) in Lawrence and joined the Pre-Nursing Club, a student organization on campus. She’s also a member of the Hispanic American Leadership Organization. Ramos spent last summer as an American Red Cross volunteer. After completing the requisite training and certiďŹ cation, she taught ďŹ rst aid, CPR and automated external deďŹ brillator courses. She also became a certiďŹ ed client case-

Ramos had always known that she’d attend college someday; she just didn’t know how. Born and raised in Kansas, Ramos is the older of two children of Mexican immigrants, Dora and Carlos. Jobs lured both to the United States. Both came from large, poor families. “My mom was lucky to ever see milk because it was so expensive,â€? Ramos said. When Ramos was in the 10th grade, one of her teachers gave her a yer advertising the Kauffman Scholars program. Spaces had opened up in the then-three-year-old inaugural class. Interested, Ramos showed it to her parents, who checked it out. Together, she and her folks embarked on the application process. “I got a lot of support from my parents,â€? Ramos said. “Their positive feedback made me feel a lot better about my chances, and we were all really excited when I was accepted.â€? Ramos and her parents committed to a rigorous process that included twice-weekly classes and an ACT preparation course for her, in addition to her regular classwork and monthly workshops for Dora and Carlos. There were ďŹ eld trips to college campuses; academic, life and college coaches; and postsecondary ďŹ nancial assistance. It’s free for the Ramoses. The 19-year, $70 million program is funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. It aims to help lowincome, inner city young people “beat the oddsâ€? through intense, multifaceted support and preparation for postsecondary education. Besides her 13-hour course load this semester, Ramos works part time in the university admissions ofďŹ ce as a tour guide. While Ramos respects that her well-being calls for a healthy balance between work and play, she’s working hard to meet her education goals. “I want to exceed people’s expectations,â€? Ramos said. “And I always want to make my parents proud.â€?

in duda, Twitter está transformando el periodismo – pero si bien no remplazará el notebook del reportero, sí nos obliga a ser mejores en nuestro trabajo, a ser más creíbles, a investigar más, a explicar mejor las cosas y a separar lo que es relevante de lo que son tonterías. El 30 de septiembre me enteré de una revuelta que estaba ocurriendo en Ecuador, pero no por CNN, The New York Times o Univisión. En lugar de eso, fui alertado por mensajes enviados por Twitter. La información enviada por twitteros en Ecuador fue transmitida antes que las más grandes organizaciones de noticias del mundo pudieran dar datos acerca de la tensa situación que prevalecía en la ciudad capital de Quito, poco después de que el presidente Rafael Correa fuera capturado por fuerzas policiacas rebeldes que protestaban por recortes salariales. El aeropuerto de Quito estaba cerrado, y para cuando aterrizó la primera banda de corresponsales internacionales, lo peor de la crisis ya había pasado y Correa había sido liberado. Pero millones nos enteramos de lo que estaba pasando por Twitter. A través de @Presidencia--Ec (»Cuenta oficial de Twitter de la Presidencia de la República de Ecuador«) me enteré, en rápidas actualizaciones, acerca de cómo Correa había sido atacado, hospitalizado, secuestrado y luego liberado – y también de que »no claudicará en sus principios« después de la crisis. El problema es que la información enviada por Twitter ese día venía totalmente sesgada. Los que apoyaban a Correa advirtieron de un intento de golpe de Estado. Los opositores vieron la revuelta como una protesta legítima ante un gobierno abusivo, corrupto y autoritario. Pero, ¿a quién le podíamos creer? Identificar los hechos es la responsabilidad del periodista – para informar primero, y luego determinar cuál información se acerca más a la verdad. Hugo Chávez, el Presidente de Venezuela, de manera predecible declaró en su cuenta de Twitter, @chavezcandanga: »Están tratando de tumbar al Presidente Correa. Alerta a los pueblos de la Alianza Bolivariana.« La Alianza Bolivariana para las Américas, encabezada por Chávez, es un grupo político de naciones latinoamericanas de izquierda que incluye a Ecuador y Venezuela; y Correa es aliado de Chávez. Por tanto, no podíamos esperar que Chávez también nos diera el punto de vista de la oposición en Ecuador. Ese es nuestro trabajo – el trabajo de reportero. En realidad, La verdad ya estaba ahí, sepultada entre miles de mensajes de Twitter, pero teníamos que escarbar, comprobar las fuentes y determinar su veracidad antes de ponerla al aire. Eso es lo que hacemos los periodistas. Pero Twitter también se ha convertido en una forma de manipular la comunicación. Quienes están en el poder han aprendido rápidamente que hoy en día se pueden saltar a los periodistas e informar directamente a sus seguidores. En esta forma, los líderes políticos evitan la carga de preguntas incómodas y el obligatorio balance noticioso; y pueden criticar a placer a sus críticos. Pero también hay beneficios. El presidente de Chile, por ejemplo, recurrió a su cuenta de Twitter @sebastianpinera para informar al mundo en agosto sobre la ordalía de 33 mineros atrapados a 700 metros de profundidad. Cuando se pusieron en marchas las operaciones de rescate, twitteó: «¡Tenemos fe de que los rescataremos con vida y en buenas condiciones antes de las fiestas de fin de año!« Y el presidente de México -- un twitero asiduo que, me consta, contesta personalmente sus propios mensajes -- difunde audazmente sus puntos de vista por @FelipeCalderon. Tras el paso del huracán Karl que devastó Veracruz en septiembre, escribió: »El cambio climático es una realidad y su impacto devastador se expresa en la virulencia de los huracanes y tormentas tropicales sobre México.« En cuanto al periodismo se refiere, Twitter irrumpió en el periodismo el 15 de enero del 2009. No fue un periodista, sino un mensaje por Twitter de un residente de Florida, Janis Krums, pasajero de un transbordador en el río Hudson, quien alertó al mundo sobre la caída de un avión de U.S. Airways con 155 personas abordo sobre el río en Nueva York. »Hay un avión en el Hudson. Estoy en el transbordador para rescatar a la gente. Qué locura«, escribió en @jkrums. El twitter es visto ahora como una nueva herramienta, y puede servir igual para entrevistados que para entrevistadores. Media hora antes de una reciente entrevista, tanto a la senadora colombiana @piedadcordoba -- recientemente destituida por supuestamente colaborar y apoyar a las guerrillas de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia -y a mí se nos ocurrió la misma idea: yo pedí en Twitter sugerencias sobre preguntas que debía hacerle a ella, y ella pidió a sus seguidores sugerencias sobre las respuestas que debía darme. »Reunida con abogado y trabajadores de derechos humanos antes de entrevista con (arroba)jorgeramosnews ¿Qué creen que debo decirle al mundo?«, transmitió. Tuve que reconocer que algunos preguntas que me recomendaron eran mejores que las mías, y le formulé tres de ellas a Córdoba. Así que, si bien efectivamente Twitter está cambiando nuestra profesión, en el fondo la labor del periodista es más importante que nunca. Enfrentados a millones de mensajes e innumerables datos, nuestro deber es descifrar qué es lo relevante -- qué afecta a quienes oyen, leen o ven nuestra información -- y luego comunicarlo directa y efectivamente en forma más urgente que antes. Después de todo, con Twitter o sin él, la esencia del periodismo, la función de nuestra propia red social, es cuestionar a los que tienen el poder -- y la capacidad de twittear -- en sus manos. Nada más, nada menos.

witter is transforming journalism – and while it won’t replace a reporter’s notebook, it forces us to be better at our work. It pushes us to be more credible, to investigate further, to explain things more succinctly and to separate what’s relevant from what’s nonsense. On Sept. 30, I learned about a revolt occurring in Ecuador, but not through CNN, The New York Times or Univision. Instead, I was alerted to the news through messages relayed on Twitter. Information tweeted from people in Ecuador was published before the world’s most important news organizations could relay information about the tense standoff that had erupted in the capital city of Quito after President Rafael Correa was captured by rebel police forces protesting wage cuts. Quito’s airport was shut down – and by the time the first batch of international correspondents arrived, the worst of the crisis had passed and Correa was freed. Nevertheless, millions of us learned about what was happening through Twitter. Through @Presidencia--Ec, the official Twitter account of the president’s office in Ecuador, I read, in quick updates, about how Correa had been assaulted, hospitalized, abducted, then rescued – and that he would “not falter in his principles” following the crisis. The problem is that the information passed through Twitter that day was biased. Those who supported Correa warned of an attempted coup d’etat. Opponents speculated the revolt was a legitimate protest against an abusive, corrupt, authoritarian government. But who were we to believe? Sorting out the facts is the responsibility of journalists – to inform and then determine which information is closest to the truth. Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s president, predictably announced through his Twitter account, @chavezcandanga: “They are trying to topple President Correa. Alert the people of the Bolivarian Alliance.” The Chavez-led Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas is a political group of left-wing nations in Latin America that includes Ecuador and Venezuela, and Correa is an ally of Chavez’s. So, of course, we cannot expect that Chavez also would give us the opinion of the opposing side in Ecuador. That’s our job – the job of reporters. In reality, the truth was there, buried in thousands of Twitter messages, but we had to search, check sources and determine their veracity before we could broadcast the information. That’s what we journalists do. But Twitter also has become a way to manipulate information. Those in power have quickly learned that nowadays they can skip journalists and communicate directly with followers. That way, political leaders avoid the burdens of uncomfortable questions and the obligatory news balance – and they can freely lambaste their critics. But there are benefits, too. For instance, Chile’s president used his Twitter account, @ SebastianPinera, to inform the world about the ongoing plight of 33 miners trapped 700 meters below ground in August. When rescue plans began, he tweeted: “We have faith that we will rescue them alive and in good conditions before the New Year’s holidays!” He gained thousands of followers. And Mexico’s president – who tweets frequently and, as I can attest, personally answers his messages – boldly expresses his opinions through @ FelipeCalderon. After Hurricane Karl devastated Veracruz in September, he wrote: “Climate change is a reality, and its devastating impact is seen in the violence of its hurricanes and tropical storms over Mexico.” As far as journalism is concerned, Twitter exploded onto the scene on Jan. 15, 2009. It wasn’t a journalist, but a tweet from Florida resident Janis Krums, a passenger aboard a ferry on the Hudson River, that alerted the world that a U.S. Airways jetliner with 155 passengers on board had plunged into the river in New York. “There’s a plane in the Hudson. I am on the ferry to rescue people. Crazy,” he wrote on @ jkrums. Twitter is often viewed as a new tool, and it can serve someone being interviewed just as well as the interviewer. Half an hour before a recent interview, both the Colombian senator @PiedadCordoba – who was removed in September from power for allegedly supporting and collaborating with guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – and I had the same idea. I asked followers on Twitter for suggestions on questions I should ask Cordoba. She asked her followers for suggestions on the sorts of answers she should give me. “Surrounded by my attorney and human rights workers before an interview with @JorgeRamosNews. What do you think I should tell the world?” she wondered. I must admit that some of the questions recommended were better than mine, and I asked Cordoba three of them. So, yes, while Twitter is changing our profession, deep down, a journalist’s work is more important than ever. Faced with millions of messages and limitless data, our duty to decipher what’s relevant – what affects those who hear, read or see our information – and then communicate it directly and efficiently is more urgent than before. After all, with or without Twitter, the essence of journalism, the function of our own social network, is to question those who hold power – and the ability to tweet – in their hands. Nothing more, nothing less.

Studies show markedly improved concentration, creativity, memory and problem-solving for up to two hours after children engage in moderate physical activity – such as walking or biking to school. Communities worldwide are addressing the safety concerns that lead to transporting kids to school in buses and private automobiles – crime, predators, road hazards, diminishing daytime adult supervision and urban sprawl. In 2005 in the United States, Congress approved legislation providing $612 million to communities over five years to help subsidize the creation of safer routes to schools and establishing the National Center for Safe Routes to School. Locally, re-establishing walkable neighborhoods is the centerpiece of Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s Schools First initiative. And KC Healthy Kids is directing part of a $360,000 grant toward physical improvements that will make two area urban neighborhoods more walkable. The National Center for Safe Routes to School (www.saferoutesinfo.org) reported that 3 million walkers and bikers worldwide observed IWALK. They were joined by community leaders, parents, sports and entertainment figures and school administrators. Not all kids live within what’s considered walking distance, but that doesn’t prevent them from taking part in IWALK, which has expanded to a monthlong observance. Staging sites can be set up, and a 21st-century version of the car pool can be organized. It’s called the Walking School Bus (www.walkingschoolbus.org) and involves
adults volunteering to accompany kids headed to school. The organization provides a downloadable guide on its Web site for setting up a Walking School Bus. The adults benefit from the physical activity, too. Obesity-related medical expenses account for around 10 percent of the total the United States spends on health care, projected to be $2.6 trillion this year. Overweight kids are more likely to grow into overweight adults. Results of a survey of 43 schools in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., released earlier this year revealed that 34 percent of kindergartners and 41 percent of fifth-graders are overweight or obese.

l 5 de abril del 2006, la Sra. Dolores Alfaro Núñez—apodada “Mamá Lola”— falleció y se reunió con sus padres, hermana, esposo, dos de sus ocho hijos y un nieto. En honor a su larga y próspera vida, aproximadamente 100 miembros de su familia se reunieron para celebrar que habría cumplido 100 años el día 15 de septiembre. Este evento fue muy significativo para la familia, especialmente para sus hijos. Ella nació el 15 de Sept. de 1910 en Arandas, Jalisco, México. Fue la segunda hija del Sr. Hilario Alfaro y la Sra. Rose Aguirre Alfaro. Durante ese tiempo, la Revolución Mexicana estaba en su apogeo y era cada vez más peligroso para los mexicanos inocentes. Su padre ya estaba acostumbrado a viajar a pie y a ir y venir en tren de Jalisco a Kansas, debido a su empleo en el ferrocarril Santa Fe en Kansas City. Fue en 1918, cuando la Sra. Alfaro le dijo a su esposo que ella y sus dos hijas lo acompañarían en su viaje a Kansas City como una familia. Una vez en Kansas City, Kan., la familia de cuatro rápidamente se dio cuenta lo difícil que sería su vida sin sus parientes de México. Entre los nuevos retos que enfrentaron fue las condiciones de vida hostil y las barreras del idioma entre el inglés y el español. Pero de una cosa estaban seguros: se tenían los unos a los otros y juntos seguirían luchando por una mejor vida en América—en el barrio de Argentine de Kansas City, Kan., para ser exactos, lugar a donde habían llegado a formar su hogar. Dolores y su esposo, Eliceo Nuñez, tuvieron ocho hijos y vivieron una vida feliz. De sus 8 hijos, Rudy Nuñez, se les adelantó en la muerte a temprana edad; y su hija Mary Nuñez Quiroga también murió antes que su madre. En 2008, Rudy Nuñez Jr. también falleció. Le sobreviven sus hijos: Eliceo Nuñez Jr., Melchor Nuñez, Elvira Nuñez Rangel, Celia Nuñez Martínez y Virginia Nuñez Domínguez. Dolores tuvo 13 nietos, 30 bisnietos y 13 tataranietos. ¡Su apodo entre muchos de nosotros de “Mamá Lola” se lo ganó debido a su amor incondicional y afecto no sólo como madre, sino también a varias generaciones de la familia! Aunque “Mamá Lola” ya no está con nosotros, la familia Nuñez siempre recordará sus grandiosas historias. La familia planea reunirse anualmente para honrarla y también a aquellos que se le han unido.
n April 5, 2006, Dolores Alfaro Nunez (Nuñez in Spanish) – nicknamed “Mama Lola” – was called into the Kingdom of God, to be reunited with her parents, sister, husband, two of her eight children and a grandson. In honor of her long, prosperous life, about 100 family members celebrated what would’ve been her 100th birthday on Sept. 15. The event’s significance meant so much to everyone, especially her children. She was born Sept. 15, 1910, in Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico, the second daughter of Hilario Alfaro and Rose Aguirre Alfaro. During this time, the Mexican Revolution was at its peak and it was becoming more dangerous for innocent Mexicans. Her father was already accustomed to traveling by foot and boxcar back and forth from Jalisco to Kansas because of his seasonal employment at the Santa Fe Railroad Co. in Kansas City. In 1918, her mother unyieldingly stated that she, along with her two daughters, would travel with him to Kansas as a united family. Upon arriving in Kansas City, Kan., the foursome soon realized that life would be difficult without their relatives in Mexico. New challenges arose for them, including harsh living conditions and the language barrier between English and Spanish. But one thing was certain: they had one another and they would continue striving together for a better life in America – the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kan., to be exact, the place where they had arrived. Dolores and her husband, Eliceo Nunez, had eight children and lived happy lives. Of their eight children, a son, Rudy, preceded them in death at a young age; and a daughter, Mary Nunez Quiroga, died prior to her mother’s death. In 2008, son Rudy Nunez Jr. also passed on. The surviving children are Eliceo Nunez Jr., Melchor Nunez, Elvira Nunez Rangel, Celia Nunez Martinez and Virginia Nunez Dominguez. Dolores was an amazing grandmother. She is survived by 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Her nickname for so many of us became “Mama Lola” because of her defining love and affection not only as a mother of eight, but also for several generations of family members! Although “Mama Lola” is no longer with us, the Nunez family will always remember her great stories. The Nunez family plans to reunite annually to honor her and those she has joined.

a cantante Jenni Rivera recibió el galardón Máximo Orgullo Hispano durante el recital que ofreció en L esta ciudad ante más de siete mil personas, que también
disfrutaron de la música del intérprete Pepe Aguilar. El escenario del teatro del hotel y casino Planet Hollywood, donde destacaba una enorme pantalla que mostró la bandera de México, fue el lugar en donde “La Diva de la Banda” recibió la distinción de manos de Pablo Antonio Castro Zavala, presidente de la Asociación Internacional de Prensa, Radio y Televisión con sede en esta ciudad. El premio, que reconoce la trayectoria del artista galardonado, se otorga a figuras latinas que han tenido una prominente presencia en la “Capital Mundial del Entretenimiento”, por su aporte a la música y a la cultura, así como por su contribución a la comunidad hispana. Acompañada por el mariachi y la banda, Jenni Rivera puso a bailar y cantar a los más de siete mil espectadores que albergó dicho recinto, en el que también el cantante mexicano Pepe Aguilar ofreció algunos de los éxitos que respaldan su trayectoria artística. Además del Máximo Orgullo Hispano, la cantante
estadunidense de origen mexicano, recibió un reconocimiento más por sus casi dos décadas de trayectoria, mismo que Inés Luisa López, enviada de la oficina del gobernador de Nevada, Jim Gibbons; congresistas y senadores le entregaron. “Muchas gracias, les agradezco mucho que me tomen en cuenta para entregarme este importante premio, lo dedico a mi público. Gracias también a las autoridades por estos reconocimientos que acabo de recibir, me voy muy feliz, los quiero mucho graciasʼ, dijo la intérprete de “Contrabando”. Por su parte, Castro Zavala destacó la labor altruista que la integrante de la dinastía Rivera realiza, al ayudar a niños que padecen cáncer, además de su participación activa en la lucha a favor de los inmigrantes hispanos radicados en la Unión Americana. De esta manera, la intérprete de “Culpable o inocente”, “Jefa de jefas” y “Me siento libre” se suma a la lista de figuras que han recibido esta distinción, entre ellos Julio Iglesias, Juan Gabriel, Los Tigres del Norte, José José, Ricardo Arjona, Paquita la del Barrio, Alejandro Fernández y Luis Miguel.
Los integrantes de Maná se encuentran ultimando los detalles de Drama y Luz, disco que verá la luz el próximo mes de diciembre. "Esto de hacer un nuevo disco es divertido y apasionante, se trata de soltar las penas, las alegrías, los sentimientos? en fin. Expresar la vida, lo que sienten ustedes, lo que sentimos nosotros, lo que sentimos juntos a través de la música, y esto nos hace sentir vivos", aseguró Fher en un comunicado de prensa. Drama y Luz es producido por Fher, Alex y Sergio, y lo empezaron a grabar en mayo de este año entre Puerto Vallarta y Los Ángeles donde se encuentran dándole los últimos toques para lo que sin duda es el regreso más importante de este año a la música. "Después de un tiempo de silencio sin saber algo de nosotros, estamos de regreso inspirados haciendo música, dejándonos llevar por lo que manda el corazón", señaló Alex al respecto. Entre las sorpresas que forman parte de Drama y Luz es la participación de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Suzie Katayama, quien ha trabajado con artistas de la talla de Madonna, Prince, Nirvana y Aerosmith. El 7 de diciembre se terminará el silencio musical de Maná con Drama y Luz.

Entonces, ¿Qué hacer para que las horas te rindan? 1. Haz una lista de tareas: Antes de acostarte escribe de todas las cosas que tienes que hacer al próximo día (en orden de importancia). Cuando te levantes, empieza con la primera y no hagas más nada hasta que hayas completado esa. Aunque suene tan sencillo, este hábito es el más importante para organizarte. 2. Aprende a delegar: Aunque quieras ser como la “mujer maravilla” tú no puedes hacerlo todo. Apunta todo lo que haces: Consigue una libretita y durante tres días vas a apuntar todas tus actividades y el tiempo que consumiste en cada una de ellas. Al final de este experimento te vas a sorprender de todas las horas que desperdicias haciendo cosas no productivas, como estar visitando Facebook y Twitter, viendo televisión o cotorreando con alguien. 5. Aprende a decir NO: Sin darte cuenta, hay gente que roba tu tiempo, como la amiga que te llama por teléfono todo el tiempo a contarte sus problemas o la vecina que se pasa pidiéndote favores. Pon tus necesidades siempre primero, a menos que sea una emergencia. Organízate y verás que además de cumplir con tus tareas, ¡hasta te sobrará tiempo libre para disfrutar! But if you write down in your calendar when you’re going to do something, then you’re committed! *Record where your time goes: Just like you keep a record of where every cent in your checking account goes, get a notebook. For three days, write down every activity and how much time you spend on each one. After this experiment, you’ll be really surprised by how much time you waste on unproductive things, such as visiting Facebook or Twitter or chatting about nothing with a girlfriend. *Learn how to say, “No”: Some people steal precious time away from us and we’re not even aware of it, such as the friend who’s always calling you up to tell you all her troubles or your neighbor who’s constantly asking for favors. Veteran pro basketball player Carlos Arroyoʼs Oct. 8 visit to Kansas City, Mo., was a working vacation of sorts. The native Puerto Rican and Miami Heat point guard sat out the Heatʼs NBA exhibition game with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Sprint Center, which the Heat won 103-96. Arroyo, whoʼs in his ninth NBA season and nursing a groin injury, appreciated the night off. “You have to understand that your body gets tired, your body gets injured,” he said. Encore performance? Arroyoʼs in his second season with Miami. In 2009-10, Arroyo had what Miami teammate and former University of Kansas (KU) standout Mario Chalmers called “a great season.” Arroyoʼs 4.17 assists per turnover set a team record for assist-to-turnover ratio. The goal for this season is to “try to do the same thing … – or better,” Arroyo said. “Thatʼs the main goal for me – to take care of the ball when Iʼm out there,” he said. Basketball: “a global game” Countries outside the United States and Puerto Rico that were represented on the Heatʼs and Thunderʼs respective rosters included Lithuania, the Republic of Congo and Switzerland. The NBA is “definitely a global game and market,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks, who attributed the leagueʼs international growth to the influence of NBA Commissioner David Stern. “I think itʼs great when you see all the exciting players from different countries come together and form a team,” Brooks said. Cabe mencionar el trabajo realizado por Independiente, un equipo que no tiene patrocinio y que siempre depende del corazón y amor que los jugadores le tienen al futbol y su equipo. Esta semana se llevaron la goleada de la semana, tras meterle 6 a Barilleros Jr. Esta semana será decisiva. Hay grandes partido a tomar en cuenta y equipos como Astros, que está jugando muy bien. Veracruz—equipo al que ya le cuesta recuperarse de los

en marzo… ¿Dónde van a jugar los Wizards mientras está listo el estadio? RH: Estamos tratando de jugar de visitante. Estamos viendo algunas soluciones para jugar algunos partidos aquí en Kansas City. El estadio Community/America no es una opción porque tenemos mucho equipo que rentamos para jugar ahí y no lo vamos a necesitar; pero estamos explorando opciones y estamos muy emocionados por estrenar el estadio en junio. EM: El estadio tiene capacidad de poco más de 18,000 aficionados, pero… ¿podría expandirse en un futuro? RH: Podemos ampliarlo hasta alrededor de 25 ó 27 mil; pero por el momento estamos emocionados por los 18,467 aficionados que podrán visitarnos. EM: ¿Hay alguna otra sorpresa sobre un jugador designado en camino? RH: Bueno, si te lo digo ahorita no sería sorpresa; pero estamos trabajando para mejorar el club y pronto llegarán grandes noticias. EM: ¿Hay algo que quisieras decirle a los fanáticos? RH: Creo que vamos a cerrar fuerte y estamos esperando la llegada de Omar Bravo en el 2011 que será un gran año.
