n Monday (May 3), the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) hosted a meeting with several community leaders to discuss the controversial new immigration law in arizona and the involvement of UMKC professor Kris Kobach.

The manufacturer – McNeil, a division of Johnson & Johnson -- recalled the products over concerns about a higher concentration of active ingredient than specified, contamination of ingredients used in some of the medicines and tiny particles that may be solidified product ingredients or manufacturing sediment such as minute metal parts.

“Mamá amaba su pequeño pueblo, pero se dio cuenta que había mucho más”, dijo su hija mayor y tocaya, Alicia Melgoza Caudillo. “Ella lee constantemente. Ama el aprendizaje. Mamá quería un hogar e hijos, pero deseaba también una educación”.

La amorosa matriarca del muy conocido clan Melgoza conoció a su esposo, Tomás F. Melgoza en 1961 en una celebración en La Barca que marcaba el aniversario de la ordenación del sacerdote de la iglesia. Un primo de Tomás los presentó, abriendo una historia de amor feliz y envidiable. A Tomás le gustó instantáneamente la manera de hablar de Alicia, su presencia total y su personalidad.

“Ella era muy atractiva, pero más que todo estaba su sonrisa tímida tan llamativa”, recordó.

Ellos se casaron el 26 de julio de 1964 y se fueron de luna de miel a Acapulco. Cuatro años después, se mudaron a Kansas City con el empleador de Tomás, una compañía automotriz.

Con el paso de los años, las circunstancias pusieron a prueba la fe de todos, menos la de Alicia y Tomás, comentó su hijo Danny.

“Ella era muy resistente y optimista, pero más que todo lo demás estaba el nivel de fe que ella y mi papá mostraban. Mamá nunca se sintió impotente”, agregó. Él contó una historia que su padre y sus hermanos corroboran. Un año, Tomás fue despedido varios meses antes de Navidad. No habían regalos—y lo peor de todo—ni comida. Con toda compostura, Alicia sacó su rosario y oró por la situación. Esa noche, ya tarde, sonó el timbre, alertando a la familia de una entrega misteriosa: bolsas llenas de víveres. Pero no había huellas en la nieve.

“Todos estábamos asombrados, pero mamá simplemente aceptó tranquilamente que Dios había cuidado de nosotros”, dijo Danny.

Alicia posee una reserva infinita de sabiduría tradicional mexicana que saca para sopesar una lección o ilustrar un punto de vista. Una de sus favoritas, recalcó su hija Adriana Melgoza Pecina, involucra determinar si cada actividad es digna de tiempo, si arregla algo o si mejora algo.

Fue la mano firme de Alicia la que condujo eficazmente a la descendencia Melgoza a través del proceso educativo. Todos sus hijos cursaron una educación post-secundaria y seis obtuvieron títulos avanzados.

“Ella era siempre muy dedicada a nosotros. Nos alimentaba, se aseguraba que tuviéramos la ropa adecuada, abría la casa a otros estudiantes pobres y hambrientos – hacía lo que fuera para ayudarnos a través de las etapas de la educación. Eso fue algo grande”, señaló Pecina.

Ella cuida de Tomás, quien desarrolló el síndrome de Guillain-Barré; organiza la música de la iglesia, se ofrece cuando surge una necesidad y sirve como una ministra de la Eucaristía. Ella todavía inspira a sus hijos y ahora a sus nietos.

“Ella siempre se está desafiando a sí misma. Ella es lista y es muy divertida. Somos muy afortunados por tenerla”, concluyó Caudillo.

“Mom loved her little hometown, but she realized there was much more,” said her eldest daughter and namesake, Alicia Melgoza Caudillo. “She read constantly. She loves to learn.

Mom wanted a home and kids, but she wanted an education, too.”

The beloved matriarch of the well-known Melgoza clan met her husband, Tomas F. Melgoza in 1961 at a celebration in La Barca marking the anniversary of the parish priest’s ordination. A cousin of Tomas’s introduced them, opening an enviably happy love story.

Tomas instantly liked Alicia’s manner of speaking and whole presentation and personality.

“She was very attractive but more than anything else was her sheepish smile that is just eye-catching,” Tomas recalled.

They married on July 26, 1964 and honeymooned in Acapulco. Four years later, they moved to Kansas City with Tomas’s employer, an automotive company.

Over the years, circumstances tested the faith of all but Alicia and Tomas, her son Danny said.

“She was tough as nails and optimistic, but more than anything else was the level of faith that she and my dad displayed. Mom never felt helpless.”

He told a story that his father and siblings corroborate. One year, Tomas was laid off several months before Christmas. There were no gifts, and worse, no food. Composed, Alicia took out her rosary and prayed about the situation. Late that night, the doorbell rang, alerting the family to a mysterious delivery: brimming bags of groceries. But there were no footprints in the snow.

“We were all awed, but Mom just calmly accepted that God takes care of us,” Danny said.

Alicia possessed an infinite stockpile of traditional Mexican lore that she drew on to give weight to a lesson or illustrate a point. One of her favorites, remarked daughter Adriana Melgoza Pecina involved determining whether every activity is worth the time, fixes anything or improves anything.

It was Alicia’s firm hand that effectively drove the Melgoza offspring through the educational process. Her children all attended post-secondary education, and six have advanced degrees.

“She was always very dedicated to us. She fed us, made sure we had the right clothing, opened the house to other poor starving students – whatever it took to help us through the stages of education. That was a big one,” Pecina said.

Being a septuagenarian and mother of adult children hasn’t slowed Alicia or dulled her maternal instincts. She cares for Tomas who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome, organizes the music at church and pitches in wherever there’s a need, and serves as a Eucharistic minister. She still inspires her offspring and now their children.

“She’s always challenging herself,” Caudillo said. “She’s sharp; she’s a lot of fun. We’re fortunate to have her.”

When Rochette competed for the gold in the women’s figure skating final on Feb. 23, the audience rose. When she finished what commentators agreed was her all-time best performance, everyone in the Pacific Coliseum stood up, including delegates from the other 81 countries, cheering, crying and clapping.

Rising to her feet at center ice, Rochette wept too.

Rochette had dedicated her incredible performance to her “best friend and biggest fan” – her mother, Therese, whom she’d lost 48 hours earlier. The 55-year-old woman had suffered a sudden, fatal heart attack, and no one expected Rochette to compete. She did – and dazzlingly with poise, courage and grace, pouring her heart into a performance to honor her mother.

Rochette won a medal not just for Canada, but for the whole world. She shared with us what courage is, one spectator told reporters.

Her boyfriend, ice dancer Guillaume Gfeller, said after her bronze medal-winning skate that Rochette had felt her mother there with her, helping as she’d always done.

“She was there because she made Joannie who she is,” Gfeller told reporters.

After taking the first medal for Canada in women’s figure skating since 1988, Rochette spoke briefly to reporters for the first time since her mother’s death to thank people.

Caring messages from around the world had helped her “get on the ice and skate here for myself, my country and my mom.”

Rochette captured the world’s heart, commentators everywhere opined, and certainly Canada’s.

Now, the six-time figure skating champion is sharing her mother’s story in a campaign in Canada to raise awareness about heart disease in women, reshape women’s attitudes toward heart disease and raise funds for research and treatment. Rochette tragically learned about heart disease symptoms afflicting her mother before her death from notes she’d hidden from her now-grieving husband and daughter.

Perhaps Therese had only thought to put aside her health concerns until after the Olympic competition, but by then, it was too late.

That made Rochette mad, she said tearfully at the official campaign launch.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute rolled out the Mother’s Day campaign, “iheartmom” stressing the lifestyle habits and differences in prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment in women compared with men. Women’s heart attack symptoms, which include fatigue; jaw, neck and throat pain; trouble sleeping; indigestion; and anxiety, are often misdiagnosed, doctors at the institute said.

Worldwide, 8.6 million women die from heart disease each year. It’s the No. 1 killer of women ages 55 and older, according to the Women’s Heart Foundation in Trenton, N.J. It’s hoped that the legacy of Rochette’s Olympic performance will inspire all women toward greater heart health, doctors at the Ottawa cardiac center said.

l campus de Kansas City, Mo. de la Universidad Webster está ofreciendo el programa de certificación para la enseñanza del inglés a las personas que hablan otros idiomas (ESOL) a través del Departamento de Educación Primaria y Secundaria de Missouri (DESE).

ebster University’s Kansas City, Mo., campus is offering English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) teaching certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Tr a i n i n g will be held 5-9 p.m. Tuesdays June 8-July 27 at Webster’s Kansas City campus, located at 1200 E. 104th St. Subsequent courses will be in the same eight-week evening format.

Alicia Miguel will be the lead instructor. Class size is limited.

The new Missouri ESOL certification program is designed for preK-12 teachers working with non-English speakers in regular, bilingual or English Language Learner (ELL) U.S. classrooms.

According to the DESE, Spanish, Bosnian/Serb/ Croatian, Vietnamese, Arabic and Somali are the five most common foreign languages spoken by Missouri students. There are several school districts whose students speak more than 40 languages – and the proportion of nonEnglish speakers is growing significantly, posing an increasing challenge to teachers.

“Those who complete the ESOL certification program will be well prepared to teach students in their classroom the English language and academic skills critical for future success in the United States,” said Carolyn Cottrell, regional director of Webster University’s Kansas City programs.

l 27 de abril, la Acción Nacional de la Gente (NPA, por sus siglas en inglés) realizó una marcha para protestar contra varias políticas bancarias.

La demostración se llevó a cabo en la plaza Barney Allis en Kansas City, Mo., en cojunción con varias otras que fueron realizadas en San Francisco; Charlotte, N.C. y Nueva York.

Cientos de personas del área de Kansas City se unieron para demandar a los bancos que paren las ejecuciones hipotecarias, la entrega de bonos a ejecutivos, el

financiamiento a prestamistas y la creación de más deuda. Especialmente, los habitantes de Kansas Citiy dirigieron sus protestas hacia el Banco de América y Wells Fargo.

n April 27, the National People’s Action (NPA) held a rally to protest several bank policies.

The rally took place at the Barney Allis Plaza in Kansas City, Mo. In conjunction, several rallies were hosted in San Francisco; Charlotte, N.C.; and New York.

Hundreds of people from the Kansas City area gathered to demand that banks stop foreclosing, giving bonuses to executives, financing lenders and creating more debt.

Specifically, Kansas Citians directed their protests toward Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

“We want them (banks) to stop tricking people,” said James King, a resident from Kansas City, Mo. “They are just creating debts and playing with our money. It isn’t fair, and we deserve respect.”

As quoted in an NPA press release, George Goehl, executive director stated: “People are angry. The big banks created the foreclosure crisis, sank the economy, needed a taxpayer bailout and are now spending money in Washington like never before to block common sense reforms that would protect people and strengthen our economy.”

On the nonprofit side, the Westside native chairs the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority; manages two 12-and-under girls’ softball teams; participates in several ministries at two Catholic parishes – the Westside’s Sacred Heart-Guadalupe and St. Mark’s in Independence, Mo., -- and serves on their respective finance councils; and involves himself in the school activities of his three daughters, ages 8, 9 and 11. He serves on the boards of the United Way of Greater Kansas City, Overland Bancorp and the Guadalupe Centers Inc. Gardening, which he finds therapeutic, represents the biggest share of his domestic responsibilities. Lopez somehow manages to make time to care for his own lawn, planting, mulching, seeding, feeding, pruning and weeding.

“I try to keep a balance,” he said.

It was his immigrant parents who taught Lopez the fine art of managing competitive pressures.

They also encouraged church and community involvement, as well as helping those less fortunate and inspired pride in their native Spanish language and cultures.

“My parents and grandparents were role models and instilled values in all of us,” Lopez said. “Mom and Dad were very loving people and very responsible, and they treated their parents with a lot of respect. We’re a very close family.”

His father, Heriberto was born in La Barca, Jalisco in Mexico; his mother, Ana came from El Salvador. They met at Westport High School where both were learning English.

The oldest of their four children, Lopez now lives in Lee’s Summit with his wife, Venessa Maxwell, an attorney and their daughters. After graduating from Saint Pius X High School, Lopez earned a bachelor’s degree with a global studies and Spanish double major at Rockhurst University and an M.B.A. at Baker University.

He worked his way through college, mostly in upscale area restaurants doing everything from dishwashing to waiting tables. After his first jobs out of college at the Guadalupe Centers and Boy Scouts of America, he found himself guided toward his true professional calling at the Hispanic Economic Development Corp. of Kansas City, Mo. “I got a divine interest in real estate and development,” he said.

Embarking on his career track in earnest, he went to work for a large area commercial realtor where he met, Andrew Osman, his future business partner. Lopez went on to business development and commercial property financing at U.S. Bank and Bank of America where he was vice president of small business lending.

Six years ago, he joined Osman at ARO Real Estate and became a senior associate in September 2009.

“It gets in your blood,” he said of commercial real estate development.

Lopez made history in 2004 when he accepted a gubernatorial appointment and was confirmed by the state Senate to be a commissioner on the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority that oversees maintenance and operations of the Truman Sports Complex. He was the first Hispanic to serve, and he made history again last August as the first Latino to chair the panel.

Commercial success hasn’t distracted Lopez from what’s most important to him: Faith and family.

In addition, Kobach argued that the law has been misunderstood and won’t be applied to people in regard to their skin color or appearance.

“The law will take place after another crime is investigated and the suspicion (of the suspect’s illegal presence) comes out,” Kobach said.

However, many legal immigrants and U.S.-born Latinos think the measure is over the top.

The disagreement of the entire community regarding this issue was expressed at the meeting. The community don’t agree with Kobach perspectives.

“I’m glad that UMKC is addressing the problem they have. They should have done it earlier. I requested that the UMKC, started a review audit for any kind of work that Kobach has done with students,” said Robert Barrientos.

Arizona’s immigration law has caused strong reactions internationally. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has warned Mexican citizens to be careful when traveling to Arizona. On May 19, Calderon is expected to visit the United States. According to a news story from the newspaper El Universal, the purpose of Calderon’s visit is to speak up about the issues that might arise from the law.

On the other hand, Carlos Pascual, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, has had several conversations with Mexican senators regarding the application of the law. He has assured them that the U.S. government is trying to ensure that all people receive fair treatment.

Answer: No, requests for the automatic six-month extension were due April 15. You should file your tax return as soon as possible to reduce penalties and interest.

Q.: I haven’t filed my return and have some questions. Is it too late to call the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)?

A.: Definitely not. If you have questions or need tax information, call the IRS at 1-(800)-829-1040.

If you have Internet access, visit www.irs.gov. A wealth of information is available to help you file your return.

Q.: I completed my tax return, but didn’t send it in. I’m due a refund. Will I be penalized because my return was filed late?

A.: There’s no penalty on late filed returns qualifying for a refund. Howe v e r, y o u don’t want to forget to file. To receive a refund, the return must be filed within three years of the due date.

Q.: I haven’t filed my tax return and I owe money. What should I do?

A . : Yo u should file as soon as you can and pay as much as you can to help reduce penalties and interest. The late penalty is 5 percent per month (or part of a month) of the tax due (up to 25 percent). If you file more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $100 or an amount equal to the tax due, whichever is less. You also will owe interest. The current rate is 8 percent, compounded daily.

You can request to pay any balance due in monthly installments. Attach Form 9465 to your tax return. You may choose the monthly due date and payment amount and may arrange to have the funds withdrawn directly from your bank account, so you don’t risk missing a payment and voiding your agreement. There’s an initial $105 fee for setting up an installment agreement. If you have payments directly debited from your bank account, the fee is $52. Interest and a late payment penalty will continue to accrue until the balance is paid.

While on an installment agreement, you must file and pay subsequent taxes punctually.

Q.: Can I still e-file my tax return?

A.: E-filing is available through Oct. 15. You can e-file by using your home computer and tax preparation software, through a tax professional or using the IRS Free File program, available at www.irs.gov.

Q. How can I check to see when my refund will be sent to me?

A. Check on your refund status at www.irs. gov with the Where’s My Refund? tool. Have your tax return with you. You’ll be asked for your Social Security number, filing status and refund amount.

You also can call 1-(800)-829-1954. Have a copy of your tax return with you.

Q.: I’ve moved since I filed my tax return. Do I have to give the IRS my new address?

A.: Notify the IRS to ensure you’ll receive any refunds or correspondence. The IRS uses the U.S. Postal Service’s change of address files to update taxpayer addresses, but you might want to notify the IRS directly. Complete Form 8822 and mail it to the address your tax return goes to. Addresses are listed on the back of the form.

Notify the post office so your mail can be forwarded and let your employer know your new address so you can get your Form W-2 timely next year.

If you make estimated tax payments, notify the IRS of your new address. Use your old preprinted payment vouchers until the IRS sends you new ones. Don’t correct the address on the old vouchers.

Q.: I’ve received a letter from the IRS. What do I do?

Q.: I’ve filed my 2009 tax return. What records should I keep and for how long?

A.: You should have a copy of your 2009 tax return, including all schedules and other attached documents. Keep all supporting documents that substantiate items on your tax return, such as credits, business expenses and charitable contributions. This would include all receipts, canceled checks or other proofs of payment.

Records need to be kept as long they’re important. Generally, records need to be kept at least three years. Records relating to underreported income should be kept for six years after return is filed. Records relating to false or fraudulent returns or records for a tax period where no return is filed must be kept indefinitely. Records relating to the basis of property should be kept as long as they’re important in figuring the basis of the original or replacement property.

Reforma migratoria: la espera interminable

Es igual a la historia del problema de la inmigración: Llevamos muchos años esperando una solución que tampoco llega.

Al firmar la ley más anti-inmigrante de todo el país, la gobernadora de Arizona Jan Brewer dijo que una de las razones que sustentan la legislación fue que los políticos de Washington no han hecho nada para resolver la situación de los 12 millones de inmigrantes hispanos indocumentados en Estados Unidos. Y eso es cierto.

Para llenar ese vacío de la legalización, Brewer aprobó varias medidas que son potencialmente discriminatorias.

Es un delito estar sin papeles o sin identificación en Arizona. Es un delito ayudar a indocumentados o transportarlos. Y la policía actuará como agente de inmigración y podrá detener a cualquier persona sospechada por ser indocumentada.

Este proceso representa la persecución del más débil; y el surgimiento del “Big Brother” en Arizona.

Pero pregunto ¿cómo se detecta a un indocumentado?

Yo hablo inglés con acento y tengo la piel morena. ¿Me pueden detener en el aeropuerto de Phoenix por eso? ¿Y qué pasa si no llevo mi pasaporte cuando viajo? ¿Me podrían llevar a la cárcel o multar? Sí.

Luís Gutiérrez, el congresista demócrata de Illinois, tiene las mismas dudas que yo.

“Soy puertorriqueño, nací en Chicago y los miembros de mi familia han sido ciudadanos norteamericanos por varias generaciones”, dijo hace poco. “Pero vean mi cara y escuchen mi voz y me podrían arrestar por eso. ¿Es esto lo que queremos para Estados Unidos?”

La legalización del racismo se da en Arizona porque las leyes vigentes que lidian con los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos no funcionan. Llevamos más de dos décadas esperando una reforma. La espera parece interminable.

La última reforma migratoria fue aprobada en 1986 cuando, gracias al entonces presidente Ronald Reagan, se legalizaron 3 millones de indocumentados. Fue una reforma generosa pero incompleta: No incluía un plan eficaz para garantizar la entrada ordenada de nuevos inmigrantes. Para el año 2000 ya habían llegado 6 millones de indocumentados al país.

Las promesas de un cambio en el proceso migratorio comenzaron poco después. El 16 de febrero de 2001, en una entrevista en San Cristóbal de las Casas, México, el entonces presidente George W. Bush me dijo que una comisión bilateral iba a estudiar cómo ayudar a los indocumentados que ya estaban aquí. Pero pasaron los años y no se hizo nada.

Cuando un impopular Bush trató de legalizar a millones de indocumentados en 2007, su capital político era tan reducido que la propuesta, presentada en el Senado el 9 de mayo de 2007, ni siquiera pudo ser sometida a votación. Ahí murió cualquier posibilidad de aprobar una ley de reforma migratoria.

Barack Obama resucitó el tema migratorio durante su campaña presidencial con el objeto de conseguir el voto latino. Como resultado, casi siete de cada 10 hispanos votaron por él. Pero la promesa que hizo a los latinos (y que enfatizó durante una entrevista en mayo de 2008), tampoco se ha cumplido. Garantizó una propuesta migratoria en su primer año de gobierno y ya llevamos más de 15 meses sin que se haya visto cambio alguno.

En la comunidad latina, el malestar con Obama va en aumento. Primero, por no haber cumplido su promesa.

Y segundo, porque muchos creen que si el Presidente peleara por la reforma migratoria con las mismas ganas con las que luchó exitosamente por la reforma de salud, la historia sería distinta y la ley discriminatoria de Arizona no se habría aprobado.

La nueva ley migratoria de Arizona significa que el racismo tiene raíces muy profundas en la sociedad estadounidense. Significa que el llamado “poder latino” no es tan poderoso como creíamos. Pero también significa que los republicanos de Arizona -- incluso la gobernadora -- que aprobaron la ley anti-inmigrante, no han aprendido la lección y que por eso los hispanos seguirán votando contra ellos.

Lo único positivo que ha surgido de la firma de la nueva ley en Arizona es que el tema migratorio se ha convertido ya en un asunto de alta prioridad para todo el país. Al ver lo que está ocurriendo en Arizona, los inmigrantes y la gente que está en contra de ellos tienen la misma respuesta: Urgen soluciones migratorias a largo plazo.

Uno de los personajes de Beckett dice al final de la obra: “... Seguro que (Godot) vendrá mañana”. Eso es lo que dice mucha gente sobre la reforma migratoria: Ya vendrá.

Pero Beckett publicó su obra en 1952. Y todavía no ha llegado Godot.

In Samuel Beckett’s play, two men wait vainly for a man called Godot, who never arrives. The same is true about U.S. immigration policy: For years, we’ve waited for a new law that never appears.

When Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer recently signed the country’s most anti-immigrant bill into law, she said that politicians in Washington have done nothing to resolve the situation of the 11 million or 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. And that’s true.

In a purported effort to fill that legal vacuum, Brewer approved several potentially discriminatory measures. It’s a crime to be without papers or identification in Arizona. It’s a crime to help or transport undocumented immigrants.

The police are authorized to act as immigration agents and detain anyone suspected of living in this country illegally.

This is persecution of the weakest. George O r w e l l ’s B i g Brother is alive and well in Arizona.

One question: What does an undocumented immigrant look like?

I speak English with an accent and my skin is brown. Is that reason enough to stop me at the airport in Phoenix? What would happen if I traveled without my passport? Could the authorities take me to jail or fine me? Yes, they could.

Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat in the House of Representatives, has similar reservations. In a statement released on April 20, he said: “I am Puerto Rican, I was born in Chicago, and my family has been U.S. citizens for generations. But look at my face, listen to my voice: I could get picked up. Is this what we want in America?”

The new law, which amounts to legalized racism in Arizona, is only possible because the current federal immigration legislation is useless. We’ve waited for two decades for some kind of real reform.

None is in sight.

The last immigration reform was enacted in 1986, when thanks to President Reagan, 3 million undocumented immigrants were legalized. It was generous, but incomplete: It didn’t include an effective plan for the orderly entry of new immigrants. By 2000, there were 6 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

That’s when we started to hear promises of real reform. In February 2001, President George W. Bush told me during an interview that a binational commission would look into helping those undocumented immigrants. Years went by and nothing happened.

By 2007, when Bush finally tried to legalize millions of undocumented immigrants, he was so unpopular and his political capital so eroded that the proposal didn’t even pass a vote in the Senate.

That felt like the end.

Then, Barack Obama rescued the immigration issue during his campaign to capture the Latino vote. It worked: Almost 7 in 10 Hispanics voted for him. But the pledge he made to Latinos – during an interview I had with him in May 2008 – hasn’t been fulfilled, either. He promised to present a proposal for immigration reform within his first year in office, but 15 months have passed without any sign of one.

There’s a growing sense of grievance among Latinos toward Obama: first, because he didn’t keep his promise; and second, because many people believe that if he had fought for immigration reform with the same determination he showed during the healthcare debate, things might have turned out differently – that bill in Arizona might never have been signed into law.

The Arizona law reveals U.S. society’s deeplyrooted racism. Its passage means so-called “Latin power” isn’t as powerful as we had thought. It means the Republicans who favored the bill, including Brewer, haven’t learned their lesson – and that Hispanics will continue to vote against them.

If there’s any silver lining to Arizona’s new law, it’s that the immigration issue is front and center on the national stage – and with a renewed sense of urgency. Seeing what’s happening in Arizona, those on both sides of the issue are clamoring for long-term solutions.

At the end of Beckett’s play, one character says of Godot: “He won’t come this evening, but surely tomorrow.” Many have said the same thing about immigration reform: It may not have come yet, but it’s coming.

A reminder: Beckett published his play in 1952, and Godot still hasn’t shown up.

a otra noche recibí una llamada a mi programa radial que me estremeció. Carolina, de 29 años, me contó entre lágrimas que está pensando dejar a su esposo.

Resulta que ella se casó con un viudo padre de tres hijas y la mayor de 14 años ha convertido su vida en una pesadilla. Quiere mandar en el hogar y tiene la habilidad de manipular al padre para que la complazca en todo. Al año de casada Carolina ya está decidida a divorciarse. Traté de calmarla y le confesé que yo también fui una niña rebelde como su hijastra.

Cuando mi madre murió, yo tenía nueve años y mis hermanos tenían 10 y 11 años. Después de su fallecimiento me refugié en mi padre para llenar el vacío emocional que sentía. A los dos años de enviudar, mi papá se volvió a casar. Para mí fue difícil aceptar a una madrastra.

Yo era la niña linda de mi papi; y el que otra mujer llegara a su vida me hizo sentir unos celos terribles. Yo veía a esta mujer como alguien que llegó a alterar la dinámica familiar que habíamos construido después de la muerte de mi mamá. Por eso, los primeros años de matrimonio mis hermanos y yo nos dedicamos a hacerle la vida imposible.

Increíble, pero hoy día esta mujer es mi mejor amiga. Ella pudo haberse rendido muy fácilmente y huir de este hogar en el que la estaban volviendo loca. Sin embargo, en vez de abandonarnos, decidió luchar por el amor de tres niños que parecían ser rebeldes, pero que en realidad estaban desesperados porque alguien llenara el vacío que había dejado su madre.

Mi consejo para Carolina—y otras mujeres en la misma situación—es que analicen dos cosas.

Primero, no tomes esta situación personal, recuerda que no tiene que ver contigo. Cuando un niño muestra un comportamiento rebelde, generalmente es a consecuencia de alguna herida emocional que no ha superado. Carolina, 29, tearfully told me she was con-

sidering leaving her husband. She was married to a widowed father of three daughters, and the oldest girl was turning her life into a nightmare.

The daughter wanted to run things at home and was good at manipulating her father into getting whatever she wanted.

After only a year of marriage, Carolina had decided to get a divorce.

Trying to calm her down, I told her I also had been rebellious, just like her stepdaughter.

My mother died when I was 9 years old. My siblings were 10 and 11. After she died, I depended on my father to fill the emotional void I felt.

Two years after losing my mom, my dad remarried. I had a hard time accepting my new stepmother. I was the apple of my father’s eye, and this new woman made me jealous. I saw her as a threat to the new family dynamic we had developed after my mother’s death. So for the first few years of their marriage, we children did everything we could to make her miserable.

Incredibly, today my stepmother is my best friend. She could’ve given up and left the family that was driving her crazy. But instead of abandoning us, she fought for the love of three children who seemed rebellious, but were actually deeply hurting because someone seemed to be trying to take their beloved mother’s place.

My advice to Carolina and anyone else in a similar situation is to think about two things.

First, don’t take it personally. Remember, it has nothing to do with you. When a child acts out, it’s usually the result of emotional wounds that haven’t been processed. And second, before throwing in the towel, consider the values, ethics and heart of your husband. If he’s a good man, don’t leave him! Just ask my “second mother” (that’s what I call her) and she’ll say, “It wasn’t easy dealing with three little devils, but it was worth it, because now I live with the love of my life. I inherited three wonderful children I adore and who think of me as a mother…I’m so lucky!”

I’m grateful for her love and perseverance every day!

El espectáculo aclamado internacionalmente incluye trapecio sincronizado, equilibrio con las manos, baile con cuchillos incendiados, hombres volando y actuaciones en la barra a gran altura.

Cada pieza musical presentada durante el show ha sido creada especialmente para éste.

En entrevista con Dos Mundos, Sheryl-Lynne Valensky, subdirectora Artística para “Alegría” habló sobre su trabajo y el próximo espectáculo en Kansas City.

Dos Mundos: ¿Me podrías platicar un poco sobre tus antecedentes?

Sheryl-Lunne Valensky: Yo he estado con Cirque du Soleil por casi 5 años y comencé en el teatro en Canadá.

Fui gerente de escenario por 15 años y ahora soy subdirectora de “Alegría”.

DM: ¿Qué haces como subdirectora?

SLV: Lo grandioso de mi trabajo es que soy una persona de apoyo. Cada día es diferente. Una de las cosas de las que soy responsable es la calidad del show – lo que la audiencia ve – así que todo lo que tú ves … es nuestra responsabilidad. Nosotros tratamos de asegurar que todo esté de lo mejor en el escenario y nos aseguramos que el show que veas sea uno de calidad.

DM: ¿Qué dirías que es la parte más divertida de tu labor?

SLV: Pienso que una sería que tenemos 55 artistas en el espectáculo de 17 países distintos, así que algunas veces cuando piensas que necesitas que se haga algo, va a ser muy difícil porque es un idioma diferente, así como una cultura dife-

Dos Mundos: Can you tell me a little bit about your background?

Sheryl-Lunne Valensky: I have been with Cirque du Soleil for almost five years and I started in (the) theater in Canada. I was (a) stage manager for about 15 years, and now I’m the assistant director of “Alegria.”

DM: What do you do as an assistant director?

SLV: The great thing about my job is that I’m a support person. Every day is different.

One of the things that I’m responsible for is the quality of the show – what the audience sees – so everything that you see … is our responsibility.

We try (to ensure) that everything is the best onstage and make sure that the show you see is a quality show.

DM: What would you think is the funniest part of your job?

SLV: I think that one thing is that we have 55 artists on the show from 17 different countries, so sometimes when you think you need to get something done, it is going to be very difficult because it is a different language, a different culture. (At times), it turns (out to be) the opposite and communication … is very simple.

The other thing is that we get to watch the show, make notes (so) that everything is good, the choreography is perfect, so we get to sit with the audience, so you are in an audience and listening to the audience. (Their) reaction is amazing.

DM: What do you like the most of all about the show?

SLV: If I was allowed to have a favorite act, I would say (the)

como los buenos vinos, Floyd Mayweather sigue invicto luego de dominar y ganar a Shane Mosley, con amplia decisión unánime a su favor luego de 12 asaltos, en una pelea de los pesos welter realizada el Casino MGM de Las Vegas, Nevada ante un lleno de 16 mil aficionados.

Con su nueva victoria que le permite mantener su invicto en 41 peleas, 21 de ellas ganadas por nocáut, Floyd se mantuvo como la mayor figura del boxeo profesional de los Estados Unidos y su popularidad permitió que la pelea fuera vista no sólo en bares y restaurantes sino también en diferentes cines de Kansas City con un costo de $25 la entrada.

a Fiesta Kansas City está celebrando su décimo aniversario – y para marcar el acontecimiento, la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del área metropolitana de Kansas City (HCC) está trabajando para lograr que el evento de este año sea una de las fiestas más grandes del área de Kansas City.

La fiesta está programada para el 14 de mayo de 5:30 a 11 p.m., el 15 de mayo de medio día a 11 p.m. y el 16 de mayo del medio deia a las 10 p.m.; y se llevará a cabo en la plaza del Crown Center en Kansas City, Mo. Kathy Tinoco, el personal de HCC y voluntarios hacen posible la fiesta.

Varios comerciantes del área de Kansas City mostrarán sus productos y servicios. Además, están planeadas varias actividades familiares.

Entre los artistas están las presentaciones de Alacranes Musical y Homero Vela.

La entrada es gratuita antes de las 5 p.m.; y después costará $5. El pase para tres días está disponible por $10. Los niños menores de 10 años entran gratis.

The fiesta is scheduled for 5:30-11 p.m. May 14, noon-11 p.m. May 15 and noon-10 p.m.

May 16. It will be held on the Crown Center Square in Kansas City, Mo. Kathy Tinoco, the HCC staff and volunteers make the fiesta possible.

Several Kansas City area vendors will showcase their products and services.

In addition, there will be various family activities planned. Entertainers scheduled to perform include Alacranes Musical and Homero Vela.

Admission is free before 5 p.m. and $5 after 5 p.m. A three-day pass is available for $10.

Children under 10 years old are admitted free.

La primera jornada marcó el

inicio de la categoría mayor en la que ambas ligas unieron a sus equipos de división mayor.

La jornada mostró partidos interesantes con el encuentro entre Barilleros y Trivi Rentería que fue transmitido en La GranD

(1340AM).

Barilleros buscaba la revancha ante el conjunto que lo eliminó en el torneo de copa pasada. El partido al inicio mostró la calidad de ambas

escuadras y fue Barilleros quien tomó la ventaja aprovechando las expulsiones y la velocidad por las bandas para terminar con una victoria de 6 a 2.

La sorpresa la dio Cristo Negro que se estrenó en la division mayor con una victoria sobre Honduras.

Cristo Negro salió campeén de la segunda división de la liga del Padrino y después en la copa llegó a la final. Para esta temporada, Cristo Negro se estrenó en la división mayor y continua con su estilo único y ganador.

Quinto elemento también mostró sus armas y ganó 7 a 1 a Real Missouri, un partido que no fue tan parejo como se esperaba y mostró la superioridad de Quinto elemento que sigue demostrando que es un equipo de cuidado.

os aficionados de Kansas City están de fiesta porque fue una semana completa. Primero, al darse a conocer que los Jefes abrirán la temporada regular en un horario estelar como es el próximo lunes 13 de septiembre, a las 9:15 p.m., como anfitriones de San Diego— cumpliendo una petición hecha por Clark Hunt, Propietario del equipo.

Los Jefes nunca habían iniciado una temporada en lunes por la noche y no jugaba en esta fecha desde noviembre de 2004, cuando recibieron a Nueva Inglaterra. Ahora, se trabaja con los Reales—tienen partido esa noche ante Oakland—pero se espera que adelanten su encuentro previsto a las 7:10 p.m.

Nueva Orleans, campeón defensor, abrirá la campaña el jueves 9 de septiembre ante Minnesota; mientras los Vaqueros visitan a Washington.

En el primer duelo, del lunes por la noche, Baltimore y su defensiva darán la bienvenida a los Jets de Mark Sánchez en el nuevo estadio de Nueva York.

Kanaan takes third Brazilian makes late surge in Indy race at Kansas Speedway

Series race, held May 1 at Kansas Speedway, the native Brazilian wrested third place from fellow Brazilian Helio Castrovneves, who had dropped from second to third a few laps earlier.

However, to do so, Kanaan had to pass cars that were already a lap or more behind the leaders – or what drivers such as Kanaan and second-place finisher Dario Franchitti would call “back markers.”

When Kanaan positioned his car “to clear all the back markers,” he expected one of two outcomes: he would get blocked trying to pass the pack and end up in the back of the field or the pack would block his competitors. The back markers helped him.

However, dealing with the back markers was “very frustrating,” Kanaan said. Kanaan – along with Franchitti – questioned the back markers’ racing ethics because they wouldn’t move aside to allow the leading drivers to pass and compete among themselves.

“I don’t think a back marker should set the finish for the top five guys, especially in a championship race,” Kanaan said

En Morelia, los Monarcas aprovecharon dos pifias del tercer arquero de las Chivas, Liborio Sánchez, para venir de menos a más aprovechando también la expulsión de Omar Arellano en su victoria por 4-2.

Los problemas del Rebaño Sagrado siguieron con el cese inesperado de su presidente deportivo Rafael Lebrija, quien sólo estuvo 8 meses en el cargo.
