POSITIVE TECHNOLOGIES LAUNCHES GCC DARK WEB REPORT AT GITEX 2023

R

ANASTASIYA CHURSINA

Analyst at Positive Technologies

esult-driven cybersecurity leaders, Positive Technologies unveiled their groundbreaking GCC Dark Web report at GITEX 2023. This study aimed to shed light on cybercrime, equipping cybersecurity professionals with invaluable insights to safeguard their organizations against relentless threat actors. Delving deep into the shadow market of cybercriminal activity, Positive Technologies’ experts found that attackers favored the UAE and Saudi Arabian companies, making them the prime targets for cyberattacks. Dark web ads focused on the sale of access and data, with prices ranging from a shocking low of $35 to a significant range of $100 to $1,000. Access was frequently granted with administrator rights, rendering even inexperienced attackers with limited budgets capable of attacking unsuspecting companies. UAE and Saudi Arabia were recurrently mentioned in dark web advertisements, accounting for 46% and 23% of ads, respectively. The allure of oil production and wealth seemingly attracted cybercriminals, making these nations focal points. Government bodies and the finance sector were the most popular topics on the dark web, featuring in 30% and 20% of posts, respectively. These sectors became prime targets of hacktivists and ransomware gangs.

33% of all advertisements were dedicated to the sale or distribution of data, including company databases and credentials. A third of this information was often distributed freely, allowing an array of cyberattackers to exploit this valuable resource. The sale of access to companies’ infrastructures was the second most popular trade, attached with a price tag between $35,000 and $40,000. Positive Technologies’ analyst, Anastasiya Chursina, emphasized the unsettling ease with which attackers could exploit these vulnerabilities, particularly those possessing even the most rudimentary skills. The accessibility of such tools, coupled with the low barrier for entry, emphasized the vulnerability of GCC companies’ information systems. In the wake of these disturbing revelations, experts rallied for a proactive approach to cybersecurity. Their resounding recommendation urged companies to fortify their defenses comprehensively. This involved meticulous consideration of all possible threats and cyberattack scenarios, reinforced by the implementation of modern tools. Application-level firewalls, network traffic analysis systems, and solutions for collecting and analyzing information about security events are essential against the countless number of cyberthreats.

ETISALAT BY e& AND HUAWEI COOPERATED FOR 5G SA ADVANCED USE CASES

e

tisalat by e& and Huawei showcased the 5G Unique RedCap Service during GITEX GLOBAL 2023. RedCap is a cutting-edge technology poised to transform how businesses approach digitalization and business transformation. By establishing a single network encompassing both RAN and core networks, RedCap can cater to a wide range of use cases. Each RedCap use case has unique requirements that are less demanding regarding data rates and latency than regular 5G NR devices. However, the device cost/complexity and power consumption requirements are more stringent. Despite this, the battery life requirements for RedCap use cases are relatively relaxed compared to those of mMTC use cases. RedCap is designed to efficiently support use cases that require a balance between the more extreme requirements defined for mMTC, URLLC, and eMBB. RedCap devices may also be suitable for moderate mMTC/URLLC/eMBB use cases. Compared to eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC use cases, RedCap can meet the requirements of various Broadband IoT use cases regarding data rates, latency, battery life, and small form factors. With RedCap and its evolution, 5G can efficiently address mid-tier Broadband IoT use cases and the three key usage scenarios (eMBB, URLLC, mMTC) using any available

5G spectrum in all (low/mid/high) frequency bands. Based on our analysis, RedCap can meet the requirements of various Broadband IoT use cases regarding data rates, latency, battery life, and small form factors. RedCap can sufficiently meet these requirements compared to LTE device category 4, with similar data rates but improved latency and potential support for various 5G NR features, including enhanced positioning, millimeterwave operations with advanced beamforming support, and network slicing. This revolutionary technology will expand the 5G ecosystem and connect a vast array

of devices to 5G networks, facilitating seamless communication and data transfer. Additionally, RedCap will enable the smooth migration to NR for supporting such use cases without costly network deployments with multiple RATs. Wearables such as smart watches, wearable medical devices, low-end AR/VR glasses, video surveillance, industrial sensors, and smart grids are just a few examples of the use cases that RedCap can address. With its unparalleled capabilities and versatility, RedCap is set to revolutionize how businesses operate and set the standard for digitalization and transformation.

or Veritas Technologies, GITEX is serving as a melting pot for innovation, fostering partnerships, and exploring the emerging trends that are shaping the future of the technology landscape. It’s a great opportunity to connect with customers and partners to showcase their marketleading data management and protection expertise. The evolving cyber threat landscape poses significant challenges for businesses worldwide. AI and emerging technologies are creating huge security risks and cybercriminals are exploiting them to build more sophisticated forms of attack. Yet, the majority (77%) of UAE organisations are also turning to AI technologies to boost security. Given AI’s dual nature as a force for both good and bad, the question going forward will be whether organisations’ AI protection can

outpace hackers’ AI attacks. “Within our own customer base, we’re seeing organisations embrace autonomous data management platforms, where the solutions use AI and machine learning to self-provision, selfoptimise and self-heal. If a cyberattack is a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’, knowing ‘when’ becomes critical. Data protection strategies with inbuilt AI-powered anomaly detection can alert admins to suspicious behaviour and trigger automated recovery, minimising damage from successful attacks,” says Ramzi Itani, Regional Director, Middle East at Veritas Technologies. In today’s evolving cyber threat landscape, the biggest takeaway from this year’s event will be around how organisations can arm themselves with intelligence-driven technologies that ensure business growth is met with resilience.

conscious companies to provide a more sustainable scanning strategy. Some of the new scanners have a power consumption of 3.3W in ready mode and 1.0W in sleep mode. Recent Epson survey findings reveal that 74% of IT decision makers and users see a high demand for new scanning technology due to digitalisation , an increase that may lead to the global scanner market potentially reaching USD $2.68 billion (AED 9.66 billion) by the end of 2023. The survey results also show that scanning using portable platforms such as smartphone and tablet apps have gained popularity, meeting the demands of users for on-the-go document digitisation and remote and hybrid work models. “A growing number of key businesses in the Middle East, from travel companies to hospitals to ports and logistics handlers, as

well as a multiplicity of government facilities, require scanning technology to satisfy security protocols, retain key documents, and share data. We are witnessing a major shift towards digitalisation, increasing the need to capture and manage data from hard copy forms and paper documents. The demand for scanning technologies will rise, especially if complemented with the right automation software.” said Suat Ozsoy, Business Unit Director, Middle East Business Units, Epson EME. “Epson’s new scanner range addresses a number of issues, requiring considerably less space and reduced power to operate while delivering speed, quality, and flexibility in the scanning of everything from invoices and receipts to passports and business cards.”
