Will AI become the new strategic partner for procurement?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are crowding global, regional and local news cycles and conversations across all industries, in a manner reminiscent of the launch of the World Wide Web in the 1990s. The introduction of a new generative technology that can be used in nearly every industry and business has stirred up unprecedented interest among IT leaders and the C-suite.

AI in procurement boosts efficiency by handling administrative tasks, letting professionals focus on strategy. As smart buying emerges, leaders aim to enhance operations and cut costs. Integrating AI is key for revenue growth and cost reduction, with many expecting AI to impact their bottom line in 2024. However, questions linger about AI’s real-world performance and ethics, requiring careful IT system review before implementation.

The use cases for AI in procurement

AI revolutionizes procurement by automating tasks like document generation and data analysis, boosting efficiency and accuracy while cutting costs. It streamlines supplier discovery and evaluation, using databases and metrics to recommend suppliers effectively. AI accelerates the creation and analysis of procurement documents, enhancing sourcing accuracy. Additionally, AI helps monitor contract performance and compliance, freeing professionals for strategic tasks. Integrating AI and large language models offers insights into trends and supplier performance, supporting datadriven decisions and highlighting the need

for emotional intelligence in procurement. However, human skills in negotiation and relationship building remain crucial for successful outcomes, requiring a balance between AI and human intelligence with proper training and procedures.

The barriers to AI integration

But new technologies always bring questions, fears, and misconceptions – and AI is no different. Can we trust the process? Will an outcome follow the right protocol, regulations, and ethical practices? Currently, fewer than half of people are willing to trust AI systems; yet trust must be built up before we can capitalise on AI-driven recommendations.

AI will enhance, not replace, human jobs in procurement, with an estimated $320 billion impact in the Middle East by 2030. However, leaders must be wary of biases and inaccuracies in AI models, as poor data quality can lead to biased decisions and ethical concerns, impacting supplier relations and trust in the supply chain.

Paving the way for AI success in procurement to effectively deploy AI in procurement, teams must first ensure data accuracy and bias minimization through robust validation and cleansing processes. Internal processes should be optimized for AI to track, analyze, and provide insights autonomously. AI has the potential to revolutionize procurement, improving negotiations, predicting trends, and supporting sustainability. Procurement professionals will likely shift to more strategic roles with AI-driven insights, but success hinges on starting with the right processes and setup.

Shein is one of the most popular shopping apps in the world. In fact, it’s the second most downloaded shopping app globally, with over 251 million downloads.

The e-commerce platform is Googled more frequently than major brands like Nike and adidas.

Shein gained popularity for its inexpensive clothing and low prices. However, the company has faced significant criticism for its poor human rights record.

Additionally, according to a TIME report, Shein has been exploited by scammers in various ways, including the use of fake gift cards on Instagram and counterfeit websites.

That brings us to the focus of today’s report. Researchers from Harmony Email will discuss how hackers are impersonating Shein in an effort to steal user credentials. Over the last month, they have identified more than 1,000 of these fraudulent emails.

Email Example

The email arrives with a tempting subject line:

“Order Verification SHEIN” – claiming to be from Shein customer service. But a closer look reveals a red flag – the sender’s email address doesn’t match Shein’s official one.

The email excitedly announces you’ve received a mystery box from Shein. However, the included link won’t bring you a surprise gift; it leads to a fake website designed to steal your personal information (a credential harvesting site). This phishing attempt is quite transparent. It preys on your excitement by claiming you’ve won a prize and uses the trusted brand name “Shein” to gain your trust. However, a vigilant user can easily spot the scam: check the sender’s email address (it shouldn’t be random letters) and verify that any links lead to legitimate Shein webpages.

Techniques

Just like other phishing attempts, scammers are trying to capitalize on popular brands and current trends to trick you. This time, they’re using Shein.

There are several red flags that this email isn’t legitimate. First, there’s a

strong sense of urgency surrounding the “mystery box” offer, which is designed to create excitement and pressure you into clicking.

Another clue? The email address itself is a jumble of random letters, not a recognizable Shein address. You won’t find any Shein branding or logos in the email either. Finally, the link in the email won’t take you to an official Shein webpage, but to a fraudulent website designed to steal your information.

Over the last month, we’ve seen over 1,000 of these attacks.

l Make sure you don’t click on links from websites whose address isn’t the official one and check the email’s source.

l Check the address of the website and the sender’s name for spelling and punctuation errors on websites that look real.

l Ensure the email is free of spelling errors. Pay attention to the language in the email: are you expecting to be addressed in this language by your shipping company?

App privacy vs. convenience

Following the GISEC event at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Jonathan L. Hasson and Lara Varjabedian, serial entrepreneurs and co-founders of UBQT, delved deeper into their vision and strategy behind the creation of their groundbreaking app. They shared insights on the key aspect, which is to respect the privacy of their users and make navigation on the tool very easy.

A massive issue with most of today’s apps is their lack of concern for privacy and users’ information. The UBQT team has made it a priority to provide multiple options to users depending on what they feel comfortable sharing. It includes push notifications, and in order to best utilize the application, users need to activate sync with their calendars and contacts and share their location. This is not to inundate users with irrelevant information but to notify them when someone is nearby and share reminders for confirmed catch-ups.

“Data is often used to send curated targeted ads to users. At UBQT, we wish to

avoid all that noise, including advertising. We are not here to sell you something; our mission is to keep the noise out of the app, ensure a seamless experience, and ultimately enable you to reconnect with your tribe,” said Jonathan Hasson, co-founder and CEO of UBQT.

Jonathan and Lara have one clear goal: to help people reconnect in real life. That’s why, even though the initial connection is made through the app, the idea is to spend as little time as possible on it. Users can only share status and send calendar invite suggestions to their contacts; their network is private to them with sub-categories that they can create, such as ‘family,’ ‘friends,’ and more. Bombarding the platform with photos, videos, and other content is not possible.

Besides helping with getting straight to the point of setting up a catch-up, the app has another positive outcome: to help people overcome loneliness. Individuals often connect online with many people, many of whom they don’t even know personally, but it often leads

nowhere, ending up as a waste of time and mentally draining. UBQT encourages people to put the social aspect back at the center of their social interactions, making it very convenient to fill a calendar of catch-ups with contacts from various backgrounds (work or personal).

In 2024, discussions on artificial intelligence and new technology will undoubtedly increase as people navigate the capabilities and associated risks of these innovations. UBQT’s technology is deeply rooted in innovation and the positive contributions it brings. The company plans to continuously improve its features and offer more options tailored to each user’s needs; this may include elements of gamification as well as travel tech features, always in line with the philosophy of digital minimalism.

UBQT’s mission is to maintain transparency in its operations and communication, and the team is resolute in its commitment not to sell users’ data.

“People should have full visibility and control over how their data is used, “ Jonathan concluded.

Half of cyber pros find formal education useless in current job: Kaspersky study

Amid acute shortages of cybersecurity professionals, acting information security (InfoSec) experts are questioning the relevance of the formal education they received, Kaspersky’s new global research shows. The survey revealed that one in two cybersecurity professionals were not able to confirm the usefulness of their academic training when it came to helping them in their role. As a result, these experts have to invest their resources in further training to tackle the ever-evolving threat landscape and keep up with industry developments.

Many InfoSec experts point out that the education system is detached from the realities of cybersecurity, resulting in a lack of applicability when it comes to real-life work experience: almost every other professional believes the knowledge taught in formal education was somewhat (14%), slightly (13%) useful or of no use at all (24%) when it came to fulfilling their job duties.

Six in 10 businesses struggle with cyber risk management, reveals new CIO report

Barracuda Networks, a top cloud security provider, has released the CIO report “Leading your business through cyber risk.” It delves into governance challenges in managing cyber risk and enhancing resilience, offering tools like a checklist template developed with Barracuda’s IT and security leaders to guide companies.

Leveraging data from the international Cybernomics 101 study, the report assesses how challenges relating to security policies, management support, third-party access, and supply chains can undermine a company’s ability to withstand and respond to cyberattacks.

Among other things, the findings show that many organisations find it hard to implement company-wide security policies such as authentication measures and access controls. Half (49%) of the smaller to mid-sized

companies surveyed listed this as one of their top two governance challenges. Further, just over a third (35%) of the smaller companies worry that senior management doesn’t see cyberattacks as a significant risk, while the larger companies are most likely to struggle with a lack of budget (38%) and skilled

professionals (35%).

Many organisations have concerns about a lack of security and control over the supply chain and visibility into third parties with access to sensitive or confidential data. Around one in 10 doesn’t have an incident response plan to turn to in the event of a successful breach.

“For many businesses today, a security incident of some kind is almost inevitable,” said Siroui Mushegian, CIO of Barracuda Networks. “What matters is how you prepare for, withstand, respond to, and recover from the incident. This is cyber resilience. Advanced,defense-in-depth security solutions will take you most of the way there, but success also depends on security governance — the policies and programs, leadership, and more that enable you to manage risk.
