Dayuse forecasts £85m in business by year end UK: Dayuse, a booking platform for day time use of hotels, expects to generate one million reservations and £85 million in business by the end of 2021.

D

ayuse, headquartered in France, has 800 hotel partners in the UK and 7,000 partner hotels worldwide. The platform opens up hotels to day time users, offering prices that are between 30-75 per cent cheaper than overnight stays.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

As of June 2021, Dayuse reached 90 per cent of pre-Covid bookings. The company reported that the absence of business and international travellers was compensated by an increase in ‘work from hotel’ bookings.

4

By September, the platform surpassed pre-Covid figures with an uplift of 50 per cent compared to 2019. London generates the highest volume of bookings within the UK (50 per cent). Of these bookings, 90 per cent are local. Reasons given for visiting a hotel in October was the need for a private space to relax (60 per cent). David Lebée, founder and CEO, said: “Dayuse offers consumers

access to spaces as early as 6am until as late as 11pm, transforming hotels into real living places where people can eat, drink, work and enjoy at their leisure during the day. In a post pandemic world, we understand how people spend their valuable time whether that be in the swimming pool, spa, rooftop bar or simply kicking back in a fluffy robe with the one you love, ordering room service.”

The Unbound Collection debuts in Italy

H

oused in the Palazzo Minerbetti, the 62-room property marks the first hotel in Tuscany for Hyatt as well as the debut of The Unbound Collection brand in Italy. Owners AG Group first announced the arrival of the hotel in May 2020. Restored and designed by Milanbased architect Andrea Auletta, most rooms offer two double beds and many provide views of city landmarks. Several dining venues are located throughout the property. The Lucie Gourmet main restaurant can be found on the fourth floor; the Butterfly Terrace overlooks Santa Maria Novella and serves cocktails alongside light bites; and La Cave is a multifunctional space with a large selection of international wines.

Other amenities include a fitness centre with yoga classes available on the rooftop. Andrea Girolami, president and CEO at AG Group, said: “We are excited to welcome guests to this extraordinary palace and iconic symbol of Florence. IL Tornabuoni Hotel is truly a breathtaking property, and we are looking forward to providing independent-minded guests with sophisticated yet unscripted experience. Florence understands how to treasure and maintain the spirit of its artistic and cultural wealth. Travellers to this exceptional city will find an abundance of opportunities to learn, grow, and expand by experiencing the monumental historic past of Florence. He added: “Our development strategy for AG Group begins with Italy’s main cities of art including

Florence with IL Tornabuoni hotel and then Milan, Venice and Rome for the lifestyle and luxury segments. We are also considering new projects and developments in Italy’s other main tourist destinations. We aim to offer our guests an even more attentive, professional service that is from the heart, as well as advanced technology especially regarding emerging markets. AG Hotels, our newest addition which was born two years ago as a rebranding of a group founded several years ago, is our priority and the values we strive for are those of excellence, performance, innovation, authenticity and craftsmanship to name a few.” IL Tornabuoni forms part of the AG Hotels collection – a portfolio of five and four-star boutique hotels in Florence and Rome.

AMANO Covent Garden to open early 2022

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

UK: Marking the first international outpost for the German-based brand, AMANO will launch on Covent Garden’s Drury Lane in spring next year.

6

T

he AMANO Group currently has eight hotels in Berlin, one in Munich and one in Düsseldorf. Housed in a 1980s office building known as Drury House, the 141-room Covent Garden hotel will be the first of multiple sites set to open in London. It will feature a basement bar, restaurant, and sky bar and rooftop terrace. In November last year, Leumi Bank signed a £49 million development loan to Manex Properties to fund the conversion of Drury House. Architect and interior designer Woods Bagot led the transformation.

Co-founder of The AMANO Group, Ariel Schiff, said: “As a Berlin-based company, opening our first international property in London was always a natural step for us. Like Berlin, London is a dynamic city known for its thriving nightlife and multicultural community. We felt the spirit of the AMANO brand would blend in well here. We’re excited to offer guests a unique hotel and leisure experience, bringing a taste of Berlin to London.” An AMANO hotel in Leipzig is currently under construction, with three more properties in Hamburg and Munich in the planning stages.

Sircle Collection announces two properties Germany/Portugal: As the Sircle Collection celebrates 10 years of operating across Europe, the group has announced two new Sir Hotels in Berlin and Lisbon.

The Sir Hotel in Lisbon (name to be announced) is being designed by architect Lazaro Rosa-Violan. It will comprise guest rooms with garden areas, a restaurant, bar and

lounge, and will also feature The Sircle club for local members. Both properties are set to open within the next two years. The Sircle club was created in response to covid-19 and was first introduced at the Sir Victor in Barcelona, June 2021. It will become a key element in the new hotels and will be included at additional sites in Amsterdam and Vienna in 2022. Liran Wizman, founder of Sircle Collection, said: “The main goal of our hotels is to bring people together in beautiful spaces to create unforgettable memories. As we celebrate our tenth anniversary, we are looking to the future of hospitality, venturing into new regions, and

embracing our most ambitious projects to date. “The new Sir properties are perfect additions and we’re delighted to see our concept brought to life in a new location, Lisbon, which is a vibrant city with rich history, fascinating culture and great food and drink. Expanding in Berlin is an exciting move for us too as we’ve had a hotel there for many years, and have a great fondness for the city.” Sircle Collection was founded in 2011 and offers three hotel brands: Sir Hotels, Max Brown and Park Centraal Hotels. To date there are six hotels throughout Amsterdam, Berlin, Ibiza, Hamburg, and Barcelona.

T

he announcement takes the total Sircle portfolio up to 15, in addition to restaurants, bars, spas, art studios, concept stores and The Sircle private members club. Sir Frankie in Berlin will be the largest Sir Hotel to date. It will feature a restaurant, outdoor pool, spa and gym, coworking area, meeting and events space and long-stay apartments. It will also be home to The Sircle private member’s club, and will be designed by Werner Aisslinger.

Brewing Up a Storm of Intere

• New gift packs for key shows • A world first with the Assam Black Cold Brew Tea Liqueur • A successful entrepreneurial journey through Covid

F

ollowing its successful ‘soft’ launch at some Christmas markets in Manchester in December 2020, and its web site shop launch in July this year, Birmingham based Whistler’s Storm continues to steam ahead with new, limited edition gift packs which will be available at forthcoming shows – The Festive Gift Fair at the NEC Birmingham (18th – 21st November, stand K69) and the Eat & Drink Festival Christmas show at Olympia, London (24th – 28th November, stand F542). The gift packs will contain miniature bottles of Whistler’s Storm cold brew Assam Black and Earl Grey tea liqueurs together with matching liqueur chocolates. Whistler’s Storm is the only independent British brand producing a cold brew Assam Black tea liqueur and research suggests this is a world first. Sales of both the Assam Back and Earl Grey tea liqueurs continue to rise with stocking achieved inIndependent bars and restaurants in the West Midlands. Whistler’s Storm now want to achieve wider stocking, particularly as the company is getting such good feedback from bar owners and mixologists, e.g., Dean Parkin, Mixologist at the British Oak, Birmingham says ‘ these products are amazing. It’s really great having the flavours in a liqueur form rather than making a tea based syrup and being forced to compromise between sweetness and flavour’. Direct customers are also impressed e.g., Amazon customer, Jonathan Herbert says ‘wasn’t sure what to expect from this drink given I’ve never tried anything like it before. However, safe to say it’s definitely surpassed my expectations. I tried it on the rocks, with Prosecco and lemonade and all three combinations were really easy to drink and

tasted amazing, with the flavour of the tea really coming through’. Young entrepreneur and founder, Dom Richardson comments ‘I still cannot believe I’ve done it – since the age of 17, when I first tried to start a business, I have been looking for opportunities, and having discovered the perfect one on a visit to India in December 2019, the Covid lock downs that followed gave me the time and head space to develop my idea of producing premium quality tea based liqueurs. After almost two years of development, I now have a brand and product to be proud of, and continue to be delighted with the growing demand and positive customer reviews’. In developing the products Dom has also embraced a hobby – that of creating homemade liqueurs. Realising, on his return from India and undertaking some research, there was little opportunity in terms of importing and selling loose leaf tea, he ‘germinated’ the idea of developing a tea based liqueur, eventually establishing that the rich and aromatic Assam Black and zesty and delicious Earl Grey would be perfect. Having also found that there were few, if any competitors in the UK, Whistler’s Storm was born, selling 70cl, 20% ABV bottles of Assam Black and Earl Grey cold brew liqueurs. www.whistlersstorm.co.uk

Sanifos makes Glamping possible Saniflo UK – a leading designer and manufacturer of pumps and macerators – continues to provide drainage solutions to unusual and remote places guaranteeing business continuity for some of the country’s prominent staycation attractions locations.

alley Hill Farm situated on the edge of the rolling Lincolnshire Wolds, an ‘Area of Natural Beauty’, is a farm with a successful ‘Pick Your Own’ business and a caravan site with 10 pitches in a stunning woodland grove adjacent to the family farmhouse. The busy caravan site encompasses a block with shower and WCs and has recently expanded from 5 to 10 pitches plus two sizeable glamping pods complete with bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and living room.. Waste from the house and the toilet block is discharged to a septic tank that was recently upgraded due to new regulations that came into effect in 2020. A separate chemical disposal point was also installed for the caravan site. The proposed space on site for the glamping pods did not have sufficient gravity fall to reach the septic tank, which was 70m away, and thus required a pump to discharge the waste. A Sanifos 610 underground lifting station provided the perfect solution; with sufficient capacity to accommodate more units in future.

A clearing behind the farmhouse was prepared which included concrete bases for the pods, a large pit for siting the Sanifos and trench for the main connection pipe. A small shed was erected to house the electrics and alarm for the Sanifos. The pods were dropped into place and the waste connections installed from the borehole water supply, which has its own water filtration system. The Sanifos 610 has a 612-litre tank and is offered with a choice of one or two pumps. Galley Hill Farm specified the twin pump model to ensure continuity of service. The pumps work alternately to ensure even wear of the motors, but in the event of one pump failing, the other will activate to ensure it keeps working. It is supplied with a smart control box which is an interactive, intelligent station monitoring system and integrates an alarm for early warning of any problems.

Standing elegantly at one end is The Greyhound on the Test. It is, like many these days, a pub-restaurant-hotel hybrid, keen to attract punters of all types and keep them there for as long as possible and dog friendly(obviously with the name). They’re doing a good job, because as soon as we stepped in it was evident it would be a hard to leave. The pub/hotel’s sports the classic dark flooring and low ceilings,

and the windows are of early 19th-century proportions which means the lighting is flatteringly dim. It looks like a good ol’ fashioned country pub, but study the details and you see it is rather more than that. There is a superb selection of wines by the glass (along with the beers and ales), the snack menu features oysters, and the hand towels in the bathroom are ludicrously good quality. The pub’s/hotel’s restaurant is housed on other side of the bar, and it was full to the brim. What’s more, with most of the punters in shabby-chic country attire, it was evident that they were locals, which is always a sign of consistent standards.

In fitting with enviroment, the menu features predominantly British dishes including (amongst many others). Our meats were perfectly roasted, the sides plentiful, and the puddings enormous in portion (another satisfyingly British trait). Breakfast the next day is hearty and homemade, and if

The Greyhound on the Test shows no such shortcomings. Part sanctuary, part luxury destination, part outlet for glorious gluttony, it is in all a little bit of Britishness worthy of a visit.

The Crown Inn is a traditional cottage style village pub located in the heart of Hampshire. With award winning food and drink, look no further than The Crown Inn, Upton. The Crown’s food focus is on the best produce available with provenance, linking you directly to the small scale artisanal producers that helps them create a sustainable model. In terms of style, you’ll find clean rustic dishes which combine the classic French with modern rustic. The team has been put together by head chef patron Dave Watts. Dave started his career at Le Manoir au Quat’Saisons under the direct tutelage of Raymond Blanc. Since then he has expanded and polished his food offering having worked around the country at various highend establishments during which time he won The Good Food Guide’s ‘Chef to Watch’ award. Dave was kind enough to walk me around the restaurant which simply blew me away. He has recently installed ‘H’Igloo’s’ in the garden area for the winter months which each host a lovely fireplace and dining area.

The food was incredible straight from the starters(even the bread!). I had a beautiful chicken liver pate with a port jelly and toasted brioche which was just wonderful and for main I had the Venison was one of the best venison dishes I’ve ever had, cooked to perfection, an artistically created playful dish, perfection!

where, from organic meat supplied by smallholdings where animal welfare is paramount, he creates cured meats such as flavoured salamis, coppa and lomo as well as pancetta. This meat is sold online and served as platters in the pub. He also runs a Charcuterie School from The Charcuterie.

Dave was also good enough to let me take dessert with me as I was so full up, which later on in the night went down a treat with his incredible crème brule(which was the best one I had tasted in Hampshire, ssssh!).

We were looked after amazingly by Dave and the team and I would return here asap for more award winning food.

The ambience is amazing within the restaurant and the pub, with a large fireplace which really sets the tone upon arrival. All of the waiting staff were fantastic and very helpful. The Restaurant was also a finalist for the best trencherman’s pub in the Trencherman awards, a great honour and clear to see why. All food is locally sourced along with local drinks which is always great for the area, providing the freshest ingredients. Dave has another string to his bow which complements the running of The Crown – he recently acquired The Charcuterie at Parsonage Farm,

Round the Woods C

reating bedtimes your guests will remember for all the right reasons doesn’t happen by accident. Not only do you need to create a relaxing environment, but you also need to provide well-made beds, created with comfort in mind. We spoke to Kate from Round the Woods, a Glamping paradise in rural Norfolk, about being a Soak&Sleep wholesale customer. Read on to find out how she makes sure her customers have the ‘best night’s sleep ever’ to keep those 5-star reviews rolling in.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

You’ve been a Soak&Sleep customer for some time now, why did you first choose to use their products?

18

We’ve used Soak&Sleep since 2015 when we first set up our glamping business. We wanted to give our guests as comfy a bed as possible and knew the best place to start was with the mattress. So many people have terrible mattresses at home, and we wanted to give them a real treat. We researched and investigated the different options and read SO many reviews before finally choosing Soak&Sleep, who offered expert advice to help us make the right choice. We were delighted with the mattresses they recommended, so then invested in their Hungarian

Goose Down duvets and pillows and their 600 thread count bedlinen, and honestly couldn’t be happier, and nor could our guests! So, why do you keep using Soak&Sleep products? It’s not just about their products, they offer outstanding service. Being a trade customer means we get some real advantages such as a discount, a dedicated wholesale contact and speedy delivery. They really go out of their way to help you too. A few years ago, we were unlucky enough to have an entire bed stolen from one of our yurts. We had guests arriving the following day, and needless to say it felt like a complete disaster. However, we got on the phone to Soak&Sleep and they were able to send us everything we needed in time for the next guests to arrive, who were none the wiser. The Soak&Sleep team really saved our bacon! Do you have any favourites? I love the 600 thread count Egyptian Cotton bedlinen. Our guests often comment on how luxurious it feels and it’s also incredibly durable. Even after six years of being in business, we’ve only had to replace bedlinen that guests have stained; none of our original bedlinen looks old or worn in the slightest.

We also use the All-Seasons Hungarian Goose Down duvets and matching pillows – they feel so soft and snuggly and keep our guests warm no matter what the weather’s doing outside. You mentioned your guests love the products, can you tell us more? Yes, they really do! We’ve had several guests place orders for Soak&Sleep bedding ready to arrive for them when they get home, because they’ve loved sleeping in our beds so much. We love it when our guests tell us how comfortable they found our beds and leave us feeling happy and refreshed. As someone who’s clearly making their guests very happy, could you let us in on your secrets for a perfect bedroom? Of course! First, get your mattress right. We use King Size mattresses with a pillow top. We then increase the comfort factor by adding a topper too. Not only does that make the bed feel even softer, but it helps keep guests extra cosy. Top quality cotton sheets in a high thread count make an enormous difference, especially if they’re beautifully ironed. And goose down duvets and pillows feel like a real treat. They’re light, lofty and warm and really enhance the entire bedtime experience.

Enthusiasm, expansion and esprit de corps:

luxury hospitality design leader LW Design takes a leap into the future

S

tep into any of the four international offices of LW Design, in Dubai, Hong Kong, Sao Paulo or Aarhus, and you would hardly know the world has been through 18 months of the disruption and uncertainty of a pandemic. The mood is positively buoyant, and changes are afoot, with three new Design Directors bringing fresh energy to the group, the new office in Aarhus, Denmark, leading expansion into Europe and a raft of prestige interior design and architecture projects in the works.

Adrian Battisby talks about the formation and collaboration of the teams, “The collective strength is so much more than the sum of each part; the team is a super-skilled hybrid model. The breadth and depth of experience, skill and of course originality and creativity. Our brand is incredibly strong and together they are working on a number of exciting international projects. I am looking forward to seeing these projects being globally recognised and to the growth in terms of size of the studio. It’s about taking LW to the next level.”

Established in Dubai in 1999, LW Design is a renowned brand in the design domain, well-known for its immaculate creations that grace the hospitality industry. As the founder and CEO of LW Design, Jesper Godsk is the engine behind the spectacular hospitality and dining spaces that have emerged across the Middle East and beyond over the past 22 years. From the Zabeel House to Grosvenor House, Hyatt Regency to JW Marriott Marquis, and the Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa, with more recent projects being The Dubai Edition hotel and the Waldorf Astoria, Jesper holds immense experience under his belt. It is with this expertise that LW Design carries forward to meet every new challenge.

“Let me refer to a really great quote by Simon Sinek from his book Start with Why: ‘The role of a leader is not to come up with all the great ideas, the role of leader is to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.’ This is so true, and we are, happily in that space with a solid management structure in place.”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

For Jesper, Dubai offered immense potential to become the world’s next design hub. He utilised the city’s impressive spatial resources and unique heritage to develop spectacular resorts, hotels, showrooms, and F&B outlets. Jesper wanted to channel his creativity through guidance and leadership, and the region offered a canvas for him to practice his skill. Through leadership, he instils a sense of confidence in his design team, allowing them to reach new heights of creativity while staying within the lines of reality.

22

The LW partners – Jesper Godsk, Colin Doyle, Cristina Wakamatsu, Jimmy Hansen and newly appointed partner Adrian Battisby – have recently promoted senior team members to carry forward the boundless enthusiasm within the ever-growing studio. The new design directors – Rachel Kidd, Pooja Shah-Mulani and Andrew Harms – strive to advocate a fluid and flexible studio ethos where design teams intentionally challenge one another. They are keen to encourage imagination and talent and explore each other’s ideas so that the entire team is boosted to full potential with a broader spectrum of projects.

“As a team, we are like a family, a happy family,” says Pooja. “I am looking forward to strengthening our design vision, having the opportunity to push the creative boundaries on our projects. What will always be the same is the excellent team spirit we have at LW and our unique ability to create award-winning designs.” This vital esprit de corps, combined with extraordinary intuitive leadership skills, compassion and razor-sharp thinking, have led to LW’s continued success – allowing the team to embrace the future and continue to mould Jesper’s legacy. “Pooja, Andrew and I work together to ensure the LW legacy continues,” says Rachel. “We work alongside Jesper to ensure every project is of the expected LW standard whilst also continuing to grow and develop the Interiors division both in the Middle East and internationally. “We are striving to create a more open and flexible studio where the designers get to work on a variety of projects, and design teams are mixed more. Previously, it was more structured, and designers were in set teams, generally always working with the same colleagues. We are making sure everyone is able to use their talent and skillset to their full potential.” Also in the trio of new directors is Andrew Harms in the role of Technical Design Director, who oversees the technical design team.

“Secondly and equally as important is our flexible approach. Now more than ever we deal with the challenges of changing project scheduling and client requirements on a regular basis. To stay agile, we have to be very flexible in how we approach every situation. LW has always had a tried and tested way of

delivering our projects, which is now constantly being challenged and requires flexibility with our output to stay current and on top of our game”. During the pandemic, Andrew, Pooja and Rachel have smoothly transitioned through a flexible approach and promoting solidarity and optimism within the team. The global pandemic has led LW Design to face challenging client requirements and schedules. “With the legacy of LW we have a solid foundation,” adds Pooja. “We can only go up from here. We have been very successful in the region, echoed by our winning best interior design company of the year two years in a row. Our goal is to take the success story global. The financial climate has been challenging, but we are still doing unique projects in amazing places. We have a fantastic studio with talented designers and I’m proud to be leading this team with Rachel and Andrew.”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Andrew Harms: “I believe the three of us played a significant part in the success of keeping to our core principles in delivering to our clients and keeping the togetherness of the team. We now look forward to leading the way with optimism for our team and individuals to grow. Firstly, I believe the strength of it has come from the different ways the three of us approach situations. We very much appreciate and respect each other’s opinion which makes it very easy to move forward in a unified direction. With our combined experience, we can cover all aspects of a project, and I look to both Pooja and Rachel, not only from a strong design background but also both have a strong history with LW.

SMARTair® from Mul-T-Lock opens the door to convenient and cost effective check-ins

In today’s landscape where reduced touch-points and low operating costs are nothing short of paramount, security expert Mul-T-Lock is offering a tailored access control solution to all hotel, holiday park and short-break property owners.

S

MARTair® is a modular and fully scalable access control system that offers an intelligent, yet simple, step up from keys. For hotels and home rental properties in particular, SMARTair® will replace inconvenient keys with a wireless locking system operated by smartcards and even smartphones when used in conjunction with Mul-TLock’s Openow™ app.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

With so many businesses in the leisure and tourism industry needing to cut operational costs and provide a safe and hygienic service to customers, SMARTair® does away with the need for manned receptions and touchscreens by putting the onus of checking in right in guests’ hands, with security still being closely monitored and operated by system managers.

26

With SMARTair®, lost cards can be cancelled and replacement cards reprogrammed for increased guest security. The system can be tailored

to meet each building’s needs and can be reprogrammed using the latest in access control management software as those needs evolve, without having to replace any physical locking systems – making it a cost effective and straightforward solution for all hospitality venues. With no hardwiring, the system can be installed at low cost with minimal disruption to a business. Designated system managers can also monitor and control access rights – allowing guests access when needed and revoking access once they check-out. The SMARTair® product portfolio also includes energy saving devices for mounting on guest room walls and in-room safes. By utilising the Openow™ app, business owners, facilities managers and security administrators can instantly send, revoke or update virtual keys from the designated SMARTair® software or web browser allowing guests to access properties and rooms via their smartphone.

System managers can be anywhere in the world when controlling access rights; making the whole process more convenient and secure for everyone. This also significantly reduces whole life costing, as it removes the need to replace key cards when they are lost or accidently taken home by guests. An added bonus, Openow™ makes it easy for business owners to organise virtual keys inside the app, check how long they are valid, and protect them further with an individual PIN. If they have virtual keys from multiple sites or premises, Openow™ easily handles those too, with no time wasted wondering where key cards were left and no more appointments to pick them up or have them revalidated. Mul-T-Lock’s SMARTair® system with Openow™ app is the perfect solution for hotels and holiday parks with a high volume of visitors and subcontractors. It is built for businesses where third-party contractors are always on-site, hospitality venues that offer rooms for hire and boutique hotels or home rental with no manned receptions. Demand for Air Purification Increases to Help Create Healthy Spaces in Buildings this Winter

D Hotelier & Hospitality Design

uring the pandemic COVID has raised the profile of the quality of the air we breathe in our buildings. As Winter approaches the combination of the weather cooling, so we are spending more time indoors, and a drive for employees to return to the workplace means that extra air purification is in now in demand. Employers are

28

increasingly looking to air purification in addition to effective ventilation to help ensure good indoor air quality (IAQ) and a healthier environment. Leading ventilation specialist VentAxia has therefore launched its PureAir Room air purifier to cleanse the air, remove harmful particles, neutralise bad smells and remove pollen and other allergens. The need for air purification is especially warranted in schools because of the extensive disruption to education caused by lockdowns. Many schools are now using CO2 monitors, and the Government is running air purifier trials to help improve IAQ and reduce COVID transmission. However, hotels and offices can benefit from the same technology to tackle indoor air pollution. Indoor air can contain over 900 chemicals, particulates, biological materials, viruses and bacteria. It is therefore vital to reduce indoor air pollution to create healthy spaces to live and work in. “Since COVID began, everybody has become more aware of the importance of good indoor air quality and how it affects inhabitants. In response there has been a growing demand for added air purification”, explains Tom Wodcke, Product Manager at Vent-Axia. “To improve IAQ there are three main actions: Reduce the number of pollutants introduced into the air; Dilute the pollutants in the air by ensuring there is adequate ventilation introducing fresh clean air inside; Purify by adding an air purifier to remove the remaining pollutants from the air. The Vent-Axia PureAir Room is the ideal solution to achieve this and is now available via electrical wholesalers for commercial customers.” Indoor air pollution impacts lung health and causes a range of health issues ranging from cardiac disease to dementia. While the importance of good IAQ is hitting the headlines in relation to COVID, it’s clear that the same principles to reduce airborne COVID transmission can and should be used going forward to reduce indoor air pollution. Patrick Vallance, the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, commissioned The Royal Academy of Engineering to

review how we design, manage, and operate buildings and how we can make infrastructure more resilient to infection both now and going forward. The initial report, ‘Infection Resilient Environments: Buildings that keep us healthy and safe’, highlights the importance of achieving good IAQ as well as reducing transmission of COVID and other infectious diseases meaning many of the suggested changes have relevance well beyond COVID-191. Offering advanced air purification, the VentAxia PureAir Room ticks all the right boxes and is ideal for a wide range of environments including hotels, offices, school applications or homes. Designed with an advanced 6-stage filtration system, the PureAir Room air purifier filters out mould, dust, viruses, PM2.5, VOCs, pet allergens and odours with its High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter removing 99.9% of particles. Working automatically, the VentAxia PureAir Room senses the air quality and delivers increased filtration when it is needed to protect health. The unit can also be set manually and has a timer that can run the unit for a specified number of hours before turning off.

The Vent-Axia PureAir Room features an advanced 6-stage filtration system to purify the air, tackling unpleasant and unhealthy airborne matter. These filtration stages include: 1. Washable Pre-Filter that captures the coarse particles from the air flowing through it protecting the vital HEPA Filter. 2. HEPA Filter removes 99.9% of particles in the air including diesel, pet allergens, pollen, viruses, mould and bacteria by trapping them inside the filter material. 3. Activated Carbon Filter removes VOCs, odours and gaseous pollutants from the air trapping the gas molecules in the charcoal. 4. A Cold Catalyst Filter speeds up the decomposition of organic compounds breaking them down to harmless molecules, such as H2O and CO2. 5. Ultraviolet Light is used as a disinfection method helping keep the internal workings of the unit clean by inactivating bacteria and viruses.

6. Ionizer is the last stage of the filtration process, generating negatively charged ions which adhere to small particles so they attract other particles creating larger clusters than can be absorbed from the filter at the start of the cycle. To help ensure good IAQ is maintained, the Vent-Axia PureAir Room features a handy filter replacement reminder and displays how much life is left before the filter needs to be changed. The unit’s fan has three speeds which can be automatically or manually controlled to meet the needs of the room and protect inhabitant health. For hotels, the PureAir Room’s sleep mode is a useful feature as it can cleanse the air in a room while guests sleep without disturbing them. The sleep mode turns off the display removing any light pollution from the unit. Available in two versions, the Vent-Axia PureAir Room comes with an infra-red remote controller while the Vent-Axia PureAir Room X has all the functionality of the PureAir Room, plus the additional benefit of the TuyaSmart app which enables control of appliances from anywhere using a smart phone. The PureAir Room also comes with a 2-year warranty.

For more information on the Vent-Axia PureAir Room and how it can help protect health and improve IAQ in schools, offices, hotels and other commercial buildings, visit https://www.vent-axia.com/airpurifiers or telephone: +44 (0)344 856 0590.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The Vent-Axia PureAir Room features an air quality display that shows the levels of PM2.5 from the integral air quality sensor with a traffic light system telling the user if the air is good, bad or needs improving. The PureAir Room has a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 260m3 and is suitable for any habitable room. Lightweight and portable, it can easily be moved to where it’s needed and only uses as much energy as a light bulb.

Licensing SAVI launches to 300 pubs, bar clubs across West Yorkshire to improve safety for staff and customers

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

W 30

est Yorkshire’s high profile Violence Reduction Unit, which is part of the Mayoral Combined Authority and leads a number of partner organisations across the county to tackle violent crime, today announces the launch of a pioneering licensing initiative to improve the safety and security of bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels..

It means West Yorkshire has become the first county in England and Wales to officially launch Licensing Security & Vulnerability Initiative (Licensing SAVI), which has been developed at the request of the Home Office by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI), a police-owned organisation, which works alongside the Police Service around the UK to deter and reduce crime.

A total of 300 specially selected licensed premises across Bradford, Calderdale, Wakefield and Kirklees Metropolitan District Council areas are being invited to take part in the scheme, which encourages venues to improve their operational security and management practices year on year.

Independent from the alcohol drinks industry, Licensing SAVI is backed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and Project Servator, a police-led vigilance scheme to deter terrorist attacks at crowded places. Its aim is to provide safer and more secure venues

for managers, staff, customers and local communities and to reduce the demand on hardpressed police forces and NHS Ambulance Services and Accident & Emergency Departments. Available to licensees as an online self-assessment, Licensing SAVI covers critical issues like responsible drinking, drugs misuse, violent behaviour and safeguarding vulnerable customers through to preventing opportunist theft and improving physical security, such as lighting and CCTV systems. Most measures included in Licensing SAVI can be introduced quickly and at little or no cost.

Licensing SAVI provides, for the first time, consistent standards, guidance and advice that licensed premises in England and Wales need to meet the requirements of the Licensing Act 2003 and promote the four Licensing Objectives: Prevention of Public Nuisance; Prevention of Crime and Disorder; Protection of Children from Harm; and Public Safety. Licensing SAVI includes a non-assessed guidance section on counter terrorism and a COVID-19 risk assessment template for licensees to use if they wish. Licensees that complete the selfassessment will receive a StarRating and can apply for Licensing SAVI Accreditation and an Award for display to show the efforts undertaken to enhance safety. Its launch is timely because it can become part of a venue’s business recovery planning and as a refresher resource for the return of staff who have been furloughed and the recruitment and training of new staff to replace those who have left. YouGov research commissioned by

The survey found that adults feel significantly less safe in licensed premises today than they did prior to the first national lockdown in March 2020. The fall in feeling safe was largest in nightclubs – down from 81% pre-pandemic to 48% today and bars and pubs from 93% to 64%. Asked whether they agreed with the statement that ‘recent publicity around the safety of women and girls has made it more important for licensed premises to improve their safety procedures’, a total of 79% of adults agreed that they want safety improvements in nightclubs whilst 76% want improvements in bars and pubs. Support was greatest among women. In nightclubs, 83% of women want improved safety compared to 75% of men. In bars and pubs, the percentage point difference was greater with 81% of women wanting safety improvements compared to 70% of men. The initiative is being funded by the West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit (WY VRU), which seeks to tackle violent crime and the underlying causes of violent crime through early intervention, prevention and education by working closely with key partner organisations including health, police, local government, education, youth justice, prisons, probation and community groups. The WY VRU is delivering the initiative in partnership with the West Yorkshire Public Health Reducing Violent Crime Network, which includes Public Health, Police and Council Licensing Teams.

This Network is led by Chloe Froggett, Knowledge Hub Manager, WY VRU, and Emm Irving, Manager for Improving Population Health, West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership, and Public Health. Director of West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, Chief Superintendent Jackie Marsh, said: “Given the unprecedented experience that the sector has endured over the past year or so, it is really important that we are able to support venues across the county in providing a safe environment to operate within. “By funding this initiative and anticipating any potential issues, we can give premises the knowledge, security and confidence they require that will ultimately work to reduce the incidence of violent crime and associated issues. Particularly aside the backdrop of preventing violence against women and girls, as well as the kickstarting of the night-time economy, this partnership approach represents another step in the right direction.” Sarah Muckle, Director of Public Health for Bradford Council and Lead Public Health Director for West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership, said: “We are proud of the partnership between the VRU and all the joint work taking place. Providing a safe and secure environment for communities is a priority for us all. Giving local businesses good guidance to keep their premises safe and secure is one way we can help achieve this.” Business Lead for Licensing SAVI, Mark Morgan, a former Police Superintendent, said: “I look forward to supporting West Yorkshire with Licensing SAVI, which will contribute to safer licensed premises and reduced alcohol-related violence.”

Police CPI of 5,050 adults aged 1845 in England between 16 August – 5 September were asked about safety in licensed premises with safety defined as ‘where efforts have been made to prevent crime, reduce harm and where staff will support you if you are feeling vulnerable’.

The roll-out of the initiative to Bradford, Calderdale, Wakefield and Kirklees is to assist them to work towards the accredited standards already achieved by Leeds.

Destination EV charging provides new-fashioned refuelling, as sustainable transport goes full circle

W

ith more and more motorists relying on EVs for their journeys, the availability of reliable chargers en route and at destinations is paramount. And drivers are now expecting to refuel at destinations in the same way as, in the days of horses and carriages - the original sustainable transport - people would stop at an inn to ‘refuel’ (feed, water and rest) their horses, before setting off again, refreshed. This trend towards destination charging is supported by a YouGov/CTEK survey that revealed that, while 68% of UK EV drivers still prefer to charge at home, more than a third (37%) are now using public or destination chargers, 12% are charging at work and 9% at petrol stations. Cecilia Routledge, CTEK’s Global Head of E-Mobility, said: “With previous estimates of up to 90% of EV charging taking place at home, this is a fairly significant shift, and we can expect destination charging to really come to the fore as people look to make the most of their leisure time and discover the joys of ‘holidaying at home’, as well as meeting up again for work. “The availability of chargers will increasingly figure in customers’ choice of hotel, not only for overnight accommodation but also when

selecting a venue for events, weddings, conferences and business meetings. In fact, some hotel booking sites are now starting to include EV charging as a search filter. This makes the installation of reliable chargers a sound business investment, ensuring guests, customers and clients can leave with their cars fully recharged for whatever journey they face next. The provision of EV charging facilities will also help hoteliers meet their sustainability targets, supporting a cleaner, greener future for us all.”

“Guests used to arrive at hotels on a charger, now they expect to plug into one,” said Cecilia. “With the Government set to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, the future of sustainable transport lies with rechargeable vehicles. At CTEK, we are committed to supporting the road to zero through the provision of thoroughbred EV chargers that will make sure we can keep moving with the times. It worked then, and it works now – it’s just a different kind of horsepower!”

CTEK recommends that, for destination chargers where drivers are parked up for several hours or overnight, expensive rapid charge DC (direct current) chargers are rarely needed, and that AC (alternating current) chargers that deliver charge at varying speeds are generally more than adequate. Reliability is also a key consideration, with drivers and property owners alike.

For more information, please visit ctek.com/uk/destination-charging

For property owners looking for a costeffective way of installing or expanding an EV charging network, CTEK offers a dual socket Chargestorm Connected 2 AC charger, where two vehicles can plug in and charge at the same time. This can halve the number of physical units that need to be installed, and at considerably reduced cost. These chargers can be wall or pole mounted, inside or out, and CTEK also offers a 4 socket ‘back to back’ solution, where two dual socket chargers can be sited on a single pole.

CTEK, the leading global brand in vehicle charging solutions, is predicting a significant growth in electric vehicle (EV) charging at destinations like hotels and shopping centres, as sustainable transport goes full circle!

The show must go on – how to keep your guests Covid-safe this Christmas Minoo Patel, Head of Technology at BonaCaeli, shows how technology can help hotels and event spaces protect staff and customers and prevent another lockdown.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

For hotel managers and event organisers, Christmas is one of the busiest and most profitable times of the year. But, in 2020, a series of lockdowns and other restrictions led a disastrous festive season in hospitality – with takings between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day down almost 80% on the previous year..

36

This year, hotel owners and event spaces are fervently hoping that another lockdown will not de-rail Christmas. But even without further restrictions, a surge in Covid cases could lead to serious staff shortages in an already stretched industry and result in cancelled bookings. There is, however, an alternative to masks and social distancing that has yet to be considered – and could be a game changer. Covid-19 is primarily transmitted through air-borne mists of

exhaled particles, which can remain in the air for up to three hours. But by actively removing such virus-carrying particles from the air, we can dramatically reduce transmission rates. And the technology already exists. The AirVSAFE 2000 air purifier from BonaCaeli removes 90% of airborne pathogens in six minutes. When run continuously for seven hours or more, it removes 99.999% of pathogens – better than any other air purifier on the market. By installing an AirVSAFE 2000, you can pro-actively tackle the spread of Covid in your hotel or event space, reduce the need for social distancing, protect valued staff, and enjoy a traditional Christmas without fear of infection. Plus, you’ll be able to give guests re-assurance that you’ve done everything possible to keep them safe – and differentiate yourself from the competition.

Why choose the AirVSAFE 2000? There are many air purifiers on the market – but none can match the AirVSAFE 2000. Here’s why: Unlike simple air purifiers, the AirVSAFE deactivates viruses and kills pathogens. The unique technology behind AirVSAFE was funded by the UK government due to its enhanced performance compared to existing air purifiers. The AirVSAFE uses a Triple Air Treatment (TATTM) system of microfilters, high powered UV-C radiation and a unique bio-wash system that passes air bubbles through medical grade disinfectant. It provides the highest level of protection of any air filter. Don’t let the Grinch ruin Christmas. Give your guests the gift of a celebrating the festivities safely with an AirVSAFE 2000 air purifier. www.bonacaeli.com

espite a number of challenges and disruptions, 2021 has proved to be a very good year for the specialist German producer of certified technical door solutions, Moralt AG. Clearly, throughout 2020 the pandemic affected a lot of businesses with lockdowns in several of its key markets, staff on furlough at both its customers and suppliers and major door projects cancelled or placed on hold, all adding to a subdued and frustrating trading period. “Our particular need to further test and develop products was also badly hit,” explains Steven Dennard, who looks after Moralt’s International Sales. “Test institutes were unable to offer their services and lack of available finances to fund these developments meant we were all especially happy and eager to welcome 2021.”

2022 Promises to Open New Doors for Moralt AG

“A slower start to the year began to show signs of promise in the Spring and our two-week acoustic test package at IFT in Arnsberg, northern Germany with the support of Mann McGowan showed some excellent product performances and assisted the mood greatly. Our FireSound Xtreme FD120 door now performs acoustically to Rw dB44 as a single leaf door, and as pair, dB43, making this our strongest acoustic product, which at only 58mm thick, is excellent. Further confirmed positive acoustic performances within the internal “Laminesse” door range with concealed hinges and concealed door closers means that our acoustic door offer has become a lot stronger for contract specifiers.

“A fire door test package FD60 to BS 476 Pt. 22 at DMT in Lathen, Germany in early September in part to compliment the March acoustic testing covering concealed closers and hinges, was our next larger testing programme. Moralt FireSound was the principle focus of these tests and we included an RFID access solution from Assa Abloy in the test doors as well so that specifiers could consider a high acoustic, fire rated door products with electronic card readers for use in hospitality , education, healthcare and administrative environments.

The tested doors were all 2440 x 1000mm in size so that we might see a good size scope added to our already comprehensive acoustic and fire range of doors.” 2021 has seen the business continue to make significant investment, for example with the introduction of Hubspot, a CRM system which enables the company to manage product enquiries from around the globe more quickly and efficiently. “With this system in place, sales enquiries can be considered in line with our R&D work that is so critical in serving our customer’s requirements,” Steven added. Plus, in the Autumn, the company began work on a UL door test package for Spring 2022 which will appeal to existing markets in the Middle East as well as being the basis of its future commercial work in North America. “In September we exhibited at our first face to face show for almost two years, the Big 5 in Dubai which saw heightened interest in our FireSound high acoustic and fire rated door cores, as well as our timber external door core range. It was great once more to be able to engage with people directly from around the globe and it proved to be a major success for us.”

Images supplied by Assa Abloy Managing Director at Moralt AG, Klaus Feile echoes Steven’s optimism. “Despite the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic, 2021 has been an extremely successful year for us with strong sales from the UK, European and Middle East markets. In addition, the introduction of FireSmoke and FireSound Xtreme (FD90 and FD120) as stock items at both UK distributors James Latham and Falcon Panel Products - means that we now offer a full suite of FD30, 60, 90 and 120 fire ratings with our sustainable, certified timber door blanks but also a solid acoustic range too with dB40 and beyond acoustic performances in all fire categories. Klaus added, “Throughout this difficult period, we have used the time effectively, continuing to invest in the business with the latest technology to deliver innovative solutions across both our production facility and processing systems. This will ensure that we are in the best possible position for future growth which is expected to continue through 2022.”
