Tata Steel cuts billet mill saw

stoppages with variable-speed drive

ABB motor and drive improve control of billet saw mill at Tata Steel Less blade wear and greater uptime of variable-speed drive (VSD) at Tata Steel’s Stocksbridge plant. The motor and drive improves control of the saw, preventing trips and stoppages that can damage the blade. Tata Steel Speciality Steels produces high-value special steels for the aerospace and oil and gas industries. Hot rolled steel is presented to the in sizes ranging from 180 mm to 300 mm at a temperature of about 800 degrees centigrade. The steel is run to a stop and measure system, which allows the operator to position each piece to achieve the required size of However, the original system would frequently trip, requiring the mill electrician to reset the saw protection, leading to delays and lost production. speed feed rate was incorrect, or if the loading increased rapidly. In both cases the saw jams in the hot steel, in

16|

some instances becoming welded to the billet. The saw has an 1,800 mm circular blade, which was driven by a 185 kW 6-pole motor started by an autotransformer, providing a soft start facility.

This would prevent the motor being stalled or overloaded, which could damage the saw. Halcyon Drives supplied, installed and

speed and the cutting cross traverse was manually controlled via a joystick, connected through a proportional valve in the hydraulic system. The operator checked the motor load via an ammeter monitoring the load on the saw motor, increasing or decreasing the traverse speed to maintain the optimum load on the motor.

provider, Halcyon Drives, to look at the application and design and install a solution that would solve the tripping problems. were asked to provide better remote control of speed for the circular saw, by monitoring the motor load and so providing a more accurate rate of traverse speed.

The VSD is programmed to run at an energy saving speed or full speed, either of which can be selected remotely. When a cut has been completed, the saw motor speed is reduced to 75 percent and initiates a timer. If no further cutting has started for two minutes, the speed is reduced to 50 percent. The VSD is equipped with a braking system, including a brake chopper and resistors to dissipate heat from the drive while slowing the circular saw. The drive is programmed to monitor overcurrent, with torque monitoring allow automatic control.

Remote temperature and humidity monitoring helps keep a lid on politician’s hot air Remote monitoring specialists Caption Data recently installed a range of remote temperature, humidity and moisture monitoring equipment at Westminster Hall, the oldest building in the parliamentary estate.

Westminster Hall is home to the largest medieval timber roof in Northern Europe, measuring 21m by 73m (68ft by 240ft) and some 30m tall, the roof was commissioned in 1393 by Richard II, and is still standing. While much is known about the events that took place in the Hall’s 900-year history, in reality little is known about the internal atmosphere and conditions of the roof today. Caption Data were commissioned to install a remote environmental monitoring system which measures a range of parameters from various points throughout the timber roof’s structure. The RDL//1000 environmental monitoring system with 27 sensors, was installed and is now measuring timber moisture levels, temperature and humidity, taking up to 216 measurements every hour. In addition, Caption Data installed a full weather station on the roof which measures wind speed, rain, sunshine, temperature and humidity. Allowing a full comparison between the internal environment and the weather outside.

18|

From an online data management portal called the CDLSmartHub the Parliamentary Estate’s Directorate and the team involved in the conservation project are able to view trends in data, manage sensor settings and set alarm thresholds (among other things). The CDLSmartHub provides real time alerts when alarm thresholds are met and instant access to data as soon as it’s available, allowing the team to establish the best conservation treatments for the internal stonework and roof timbers. When alarm thresholds are met SMS and Email alerts make key personnel aware of potentially unsafe or dangerous temperature, humidity or moisture content levels. Robin Walker, MP for Worcester said, “Hopefully 21st century internet based monitoring from Worcester based Caption Data will help preserve this fabulous building for many more centuries to come!” Key features of the RDL//1000 Environmental monitoring system Parameters measured: temperature, humidity, Wood Moisture Equivalent

Motion control plays enabling role for biomedical equipment: MICA BioSystems new approach to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications

Strengthening its continued design and build expertise for biomedical motion applications, LG Motion Limited has just completed the supply of a customised positioning system for the bioengineering innovator MICA BioSystems Ltd. Formed in 2010 by Keele University Professors Jon Dobson and Alicia J El Haj, the spin-out Company has developed a ‘mechanical conditioning bioreactor’ to support a patented technology invented at Keele’s Institute of Science and Technology in Medicine (ISTM). The benchtop laboratory machine aims to control cell behaviour by applying time varying magnetic forces to magnetic nanoparticles targeted to cell membrane receptors. The particles are oscillated by a motion controlled magnet array to vary the magnetic force and exposure factors applied. The technique is of wide interest for biomedical research and has very promising opportunities for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine as well as providing an important tool for drug screening. The MICA™ (Magnetic Ion Channel Activation) Bioreactor includes is specially designed incubator with provision for cell growth chambers or multi-well plates to be loaded and located in its upper area whilst the magnetic array is mounted beneath on the, LG Motion designed, motorised linear positioning stage. With its microstepping drive and integral indexer housed in a separate

38|

desktop console, researchers can initiate and adjust the stage speed and position using GUI software from a standard PC to set the oscillation rate, amplitude and duration parameters of the magnetic array - and thus produce required for the application. LG Motion was contacted by MICA BioSystems following successful design and supply to Prof. Dobson’s earlier spin-out company, nanoTherics, transfer initiative from Keele University. LG Motion’s work with nanoTherics included development for a similar oscillation process for gene transfection and they were able to bring this experience into the project for MICA. single-axis positioning stage with travel range of 50 mm and positional repeatability to within 10 microns, with support frame and control electronics. During the early proposal stages of the project it was established that the Basingstoke based motion specialist could add value by including the bioreactor cabinet and the mounting bracketry for the magnet arrays as part of the scope of supply. As the bioreactor needed to be restricted to a convenient benchtop size, the aluminium machine framing support structure for the mechanical system steel panelling. This allowed a smart and attractive curved design style to be included with a reasonable build cost.

The vertical orientation of the stage and the relatively heavy overhung payload of the various interchangeable magnet arrays necessitated a robust design with a long-life capability to endure extended periods of oscillation over its working life. A dual linear bearing arrangement based on linear motion guides was preferred along with a rolled quality ballscrew that would economically provide the precision required. The microstepping motor driven stage includes adjustable over travel limit switches to protect the magnets and the incubator from collision whilst a home sensor maintains a datum position on initialisation as part of the routine included water cooling inlet and outlet connections. The single axis drive and indexer that includes a 230V AC power supply is installed in a smart benchtop mounted cabinet that meets BSI EN60204-1 for EMC and LVD directives. A two metre cable connects the bioreactor to the control cabinet which includes a removable front panel with a safety reed switch to ensure that it is screwed in place before bioreactor operation. As with all LG Motion systems, wiring diagrams and user operation guidelines as well as programming and set-up software with full documentation is included.
