Engage Page Rocco Awards Interview with Star Project This month we got to sit down with Star Project to talk about how they feel about winning this year’s ROCCO award for third sector recognition. The ROCCO awards are considered the biggest of their kind in Scotland and are sought after by businesses all over Renfrewshire so winning an award is quite an achievement. Sharon McAulay is the project manager at Star Project and was delighted that they received the award. “Winning the award is amazing. We’re very proud especially given the calibre of the other organisations shortlisted for the award” said Sharon. Sharon told us “when the winner was announced I felt completely eutectic. I know it sounds cliché but we honestly really, really wanted to win the award” “I think it’s testament to not only the level we work at in terms of the grass roots level but our focus on building relationships and what that does is make people feel safe. It’s not shiny and glamorous but it’s what we do really, really well and I think that came across when we were in front of the judges. We were able to give them the numbers, the facts, the figures and the structures but we were also able to give them the story, the story behind real people and the difference we can make. That’s what I believe set us apart” said Sharon when asked why she thinks Star Project was chosen for the award. “When told the judges that we don’t just meet people’s needs, we meet them in their need and I think that’s exactly what we do. There is no other organisation in the area that does what we do. There are some that do bits of what we do but we work in a holistic way and people can come to us for anything”. Gaining the award has had some great repercussions for Star Project. MSP Annabel Goldie has visited and is drafting a motion for parliament to do with the work that Star Project offers. Their funders were delighted too and Sharon believes that having the award shows that the Star Project is worth the investment. When asked about the future Sharon says “it’s onwards and upwards for Star Project. We’ve got a lot planned for 2013. There are developments in certain areas planned and there are new things happening too. We’re waiting to hear about our lottery application for 2013 which should be decoded in January but no matter what we’ll still be here and we’ll still be offering the variety of services that we’re known for”. We’d like to congratulate Star Project on what they’ve achieved and wish them the best for 2013.

Volunteering Page Renfrewshire Council’s new employee volunteering scheme, Your Time to Give, is up and running and has already made its mark on a new community project in Johnstone. Local sports teams have banded together to re-open the former McMaster Sports Centre as a community facility. Lottery funding has helped with the renovation of the interior, but the exterior of the building and its surroundings still needs a lot of work – and that’s where our volunteers come in! The group, pictured above, spent a morning clearing litter, tidying paths and sanding down railings in an effort to help bring the centre up to scratch. Iain Reynolds is one of the group behind the project and organised the volunteering opportunity through Engage Renfrewshire. Iain said: “It was great having the council staff come out and give us a helping hand. It sounds simple, but even a couple of hours picking litter is such a big help to us – Lottery funding depends on things like how well you maintain the surroundings”. “The outside of the building still needs loads of work, but we’re determined to get it done and this was another big step on the way”. You’re Time to Give aims to make it easier to volunteer by building up a ‘database’ of local volunteering opportunities in Renfrewshire. The council will support employees in their volunteering activities by allowing up to two days paid leave per year in line with the Special Leave Policy.
