Welcome to

Eastern Michigan University Theatre within the newly re-named School of Communication, Media & Theatre Arts. We are excited to begin our 2016-2017 Mainstage season as we shine light on the enigmatic and mysterious process of “meaning - making”. In theatre as in life, meaning is composed through a series of actions: a collection of words assembled into a sentence, random pictures ordered within a context, a group of events sequenced in time. It is a common belief that drama carries the weight of a dilemma, a question to be solved, a conflict to overcome. Yet when the details are organized into a coherent pattern and all the dots are connected, then the story, the story’s teller and the audience can come together in mutual enlightenment. Considering this most human need, the need to comprehend, we’ve dubbed this year’s collection of plays, Piecing It Together. Each production can be likened to a puzzle where characters and audiences alike are challenged to grapple with linking the pieces into a meaningful thought. Audiences will… join a young couple as they look forward/back at their fractured relationship; brook the bloody casualties of ruthless ambition; thread together a contemporary tapestry of the female experience; witness a classic cautionary tale of reflection and redemption; appreciate a family’s struggle to stake their claim in an unwelcoming world; transport into a fantastical tale of survival, bravery and sacrifice; confront the provocative journey of budding sexual passions; and share in capricious behaviors which lead to the understanding of patience and forgiveness. Come join us as we immerse ourselves in pieces of life.

In Macbeth, Shakespeare’s ruthless and savage tragedy, a brutal warrior and his wife embrace a vision of the world where prophecy becomes their reality, a vision where unbridled ambition leaves a murderous trail of bloody casualties in its wake, and ultimately a vision where callous action has revengeful consequence.
