Androscoggin County Chamber honors Closson with Geiger Award LEWISTON – Nearly 450 area business and civic leaders honored excellence in community commerce, service and leadership at the 124th annual meeting of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce. A sold-out crowd gathered the night of Feb. 9, 2012 at the Ramada Conference Center for the dinner and awards. In opening remarks, Paul Anderson of Androscoggin Bank challenged attendees to create one job in coming months. He praised the chamber for promoting job creation in many ways, and he emphasized that “everything flows through L-A” in relation to the state’s economic significance. The chamber’s prestigious Ray Geiger Award was given to Steve Closson, recently retired president of Androscoggin Bank. He was honored for leading Androscoggin Bank as a major engine of growth in L-A. Closson told attendees that support of the chamber should be a paramount responsibility for each of them. Kurk Lalemand, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, was master of ceremonies. He said worldwide issues of climate, economy and conflict are presenting major challenges to even the smallest of local businesses, yet many of them meet and exceed expectations in the face of these tests. He pointed to Jason Agren of Agren Appliance in Auburn, whose family started the business 1969 with a telephone and two repair trucks, as an example of many businesses that are “the lifeblood of our communities." The firm now has 49 employees and stores in five towns. “You guys are my heroes,” he said. Agren Appliance received the chamber’s 2012 Business Leadership Award for a larger business. The Business Leadership Award for a smaller company went to Baxter Brewing Co. The firm opened in recent months at
the Bates Mill in Lewiston. It is New England’s first craft brewery in which the beer is sold in cans. The Poland Business Award went to Pike Industries. It was founded in 1872 and under five generations of ownership it now has 35 locations throughout northern New England. Baxter Brewing was the newest of the award recipients and Pike Industries was the firm with the longest history. Auburn police Chief Phil Crowell was recipient of the Public Service Leadership Award, which recognized his distinguished work from his days as Officer Friendly in the schools to a recent period of appointment to the position of acting city manager. Crowell was unable to attend the awards event. Auburn Mayor Jonathan LaBonte accepted the award for him. In many cases, groups of six or more employees came to the front of the banquet hall to accept awards. One of them was Androscoggin, recipients Education Leadership Award.

Two President’s Awards from chamber President Chip Morrison went to The Library Cafe at the Auburn Public Library and to Northeast Charter and Tour, of Lewiston. Mainely Character is Now Accepting Applications for 2012 Scholarships PORTLAND – Applications are now being accepted for 2012 Mainely Character Scholarships to be awarded this spring.

Scholarships will be awarded to Maine high school seniors who will pursue post high school education and demonstrate key attributes of character – responsibility, courage, integrity, and concern for others. Three scholarships are available in 2012, one $5,000 scholarship sponsored by R. M Davis Inc. of Portland, and two $2,500 scholarships sponsored by Northeast Bank of Lewiston and Market Decisions of Portland.

Improving Unemployment Rate Means Fewer Weeks of Federal Jobless Benefits in Maine AUGUSTA – A steady decline in Maine’s unemployment rate has led to Maine being removed from the federal designated list of “high unemployment states.� While the move represents more welcome news of an improving economy, the U.S. Department of Labor notified the state this week that long-term unemployed workers will no longer be eligible for up to 13 weeks federally-funded unemployment provided under the Extended Benefits (EB) program. “Our unemployment rate dropped during 2011 and jobless claims for benefits were lower in 11 of the last 12 months as compared to the same time the year before,� said Maine Labor Commissioner Robert Winglass. “Although seasonal factors will continue to play a role in the job market from month to month, overall workforce conditions are improving.� The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Maine was 7.0 percent in December — down from 7.5 percent one year ago, and significantly lower than the U.S. unemployment rate of 8.5 percent. Nearly 3,000 more Mainers were employed in December compared with the same period in 2010 and the number of unemployed dropped by 3,800. Federal EB benefits are available to workers in high unemployment states, but only after they have exhausted all
regular unemployment insurance benefits and the up to 47 weeks of federally-funded unemployment benefits provided under the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program. For the approximately 1,850 Maine workers who may be eligible for unemployment under the EB program, the last payable week for benefits will be the week ending February 18, 2012. “EB represents the final weeks of benefits for the longest-term unemployed,� said Laura Boyett, director of the Maine Department of Labor Bureau of Unemployment Compensation. “Generally, the workers who are receiving unemployment under EB have already collected up to 73 weeks of benefits under other state and federal unemployment programs.� Maine CareerCenters have ramped up outreach to workers who are expected to lose benefits as the result of the end of EB unemployment in Maine. Workers are being encouraged to visit CareerCenters to attend employment workshops or meet one-on-one with a career counselor. “CareerCenters are an important resource for people looking for a new job, their first job, or a different career,� said Commissioner Winglass. “Over 3,300 available Maine jobs Continued on page 4

Are You Your Own Personal Brand Manager? By Chris Perry, MBA, Career Rocketeer
Your answer to this question should be "YES!" unless, of course, you are a celebrity or any other global personality who can afford an entire marketing team to manage your image and reputation.
If you are active online with blogs and social networks, managing your brand can be as simple as Googling yourself and using Google Alerts to stay updated on any new mentions or publications of your name, your websites, your blogs, your articles and more. When offline, managing your brand can be as easy as carefully reviewing your performance evaluations at work and/or seeking consistent feedback from family, friends, supervisors and other career stakeholders to make sure your personal communications are being effectively transmitted and correctly received.
We should all be taking charge in creating, establishing and managing our own personal brands online and offline. Once you have begun to establish yours, managing it can be a piece of cake.
1. It is true that people are not products. However, often we choose one product over other similar products because of its brand (a.k.a. its unique and differentiating value) and how that value fulfills our need in a given situation. This holds true for people, as well. Each person has a unique and differentiating value, or personal brand, that fulfills an organization's need in a given situation better than other similar people.
As I continue to surf the net for new articles about or related to this topic, I have been amazed at the number of voices against these concepts. Here are just some of the questions and comments I have come across from such voices:

"People are not brands, because people are not products." "Who cares about your personal brand?" "Personal branding is narcissistic." "Are you so unsure of who you are that you must reaffirm yourself via Internet tools?" 5. "Why is it so important to make sure your online image appears the way you want it to?" While I respect and understand where each of these points is coming from, I must reinforce the importance of personal brand management in response to each one.

We should all care about our personal brands because they combine our strengths, our personalities, our reputations, our values and our goals all into one communicable, unique and differentiating value that we bring to the table. 3. Personal branding isn't narcissistic unless taken to the extreme. Promoting your strengths and your unique and differentiating value to your career stakeholders is healthy and important for your own selffulfillment and achievement in life. As more and more professionals brand themselves, it is essential that you establish your own brand in order to stand out in your job search and career development. 4. Keeping track of your online reputation with simple online tools does not make you less confident. The Internet is a vast and ever-evolving platform on which it is much easier to miss "fires" threatening our personal brands and reputations.
Therefore, we must fight fire with fire to stay on top of everything and protect our reputations and our investment. 5. Your online image is just a part of your overall image and personal brand. If you invest time, energy and even money into your own personal development and image offline, it makes sense that you will want your online image to match. Personal branding is simply creating, establishing and communicating a unique and memorable value and reputation, and personal brand management is the consistent upkeep and maintenance of this value in the spheres in which you choose to exist and be active, both online and offline. Brand managers establish and protect the value that your favorite chosen brands of products deliver, so be your own personal brand manager and protect all that you have to offer! Don't have the interest? Then get the help of a professional tax preparer immediately after you receive W-2 forms from your employer in order to complete and file your taxes before the filing deadline. The IRS offers help, too. Visit www.irs.gov for information about filing your income taxes. Check out IRS publication 17, "Your Federal Income Tax," on the IRS website. It highlights everything you need to know about filing your personal income tax return. The IRS also offers help over the phone and interactive tax assistance through its website. Go electronic. Every year, more and more people file their taxes electronically. Why? Because it offers ease of use and quicker tax refunds, which are typically issued two weeks after filing. In 2010, nearly 100 million Americans (70 percent of tax filers) filed their taxes electronically, using offthe-shelf tax preparation software or the IRS website's filing page, according to IRS estimates. Electronic filing can reduce math errors and the cost of paying for return receipts at the post office. When you file electronically, consider using direct deposit, which

authorizes the IRS to deposit your refund directly into your checking account instead of sending you a check in the mail. Don't avoid filing. Some people, especially those who are self-employed or have been laid off, worry that they can't pay the full amount of taxes they owe. Therefore, they avoid filing. Don't do it. It will only make matters worse. First, give yourself time by filing for an extension, which gives you up to six months to file a return. Second, it's better to pay something rather than nothing if you owe on your taxes. A non-payment of your taxes can result in penalties and interest. Even a partial payment can reduce your penalties and shows good faith if you're audited. Keep your returns. In the event that you're audited, it's important to have up to seven years of previously filed income tax returns on file. These are also useful in preparing current income tax returns, and may be valuable to your estate's executor if you become incapacitated or die unexpectedly. Plan ahead. Tax regulations change every year. To lower your tax burden, start keeping good records now and become familiar with changes to the tax code for 2012 by consulting with an experienced tax attorney, accountant, or by visiting the IRS website, www.irs.gov.
