I've got a pair of sneakers that I can't bear to throw out. They've got holes and they're worn, but they are SO comfortable. Problem is... they're not good for my feet and they're subject to wearing out at any time... Maybe you've got an old chair or even an old car you just can't bear to part with. We've all been there. All too often, some of us also get attached to old jobs that feel SO comfortable. For example: Jeff took a job as a bartender after he dropped out of school and couldn't get a job. He made good tips and now he's still doing the same job. He's got a lot of outside interests - he's also an artist - so he's kind of let his day job go by. Maria had been a corporate executive. When she moved to a new city for family reasons, she accepted a job as a teller in a small bank. She can't move up and she can't move out in the same town. She's starting to get restless - and her boss seems to be wondering why she's still there. Martin started a business as a life coach. He wasn't very successful. So he accepted an online job that fell into his lap, where he developed online training programs for a medium-sized company. The work was easy and fun. Originally, Martin figured he'd use the money from this job to support his business with technology and assistants, but he soon got SO comfortable. His salary began to feel like an allowance or veterans benefit. These examples are composites and they're pretty extreme. But

many of us fall into patterns that lead to career lethargy. What's the problem? Well, when you're treading water at the local pool, you don't develop skills in competitive ocean swimming. You get comfortable. And then you reach a point where you can't make a comeback. Your energy - both physical and mental- operates on a different wavelength.

rewarded for your initial efforts. If you just can't summon up the energy to change, do something different, even something small. That's often enough to trigger your energy to get started on a new career. When I say small, I mean really small. Think of driving home a new way. Write in longhand when you usually use the computer. Read a book in a new field. Challenge yourself to take a class or course.

Old shoes take up a lot of space. “All too Sometimes you need to get rid of them before they take over often, some your closet - although of cousre it's rarely a good of us also idea to toss out the old get attached to irresponsibly. Who wants to go barefoot? old jobs that feel SO comfortable.”

There's almost always a way to change careers, but it's easier to start as early as possible. You need different career muscles for career change than you do for career maintenance. By way of analogy, if you haven't worked out in five years, you probably need to start with a trainer. You need some powerful external motivation to start or else you need to find some way to get

FAME and ASA to tackle college affordability, student debt in Maine First-of-its-kind collaboration utilizes new model to deliver financial education and debt management services free-of-charge to students and alumni

AUGUSTA — The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) has partnered with American Student Assistance (ASA) to revolutionize how Maine collegegoers finance and repay their higher education costs. Through the innovative educational membership program SALTSM, functionally powered by ASA and administered in Maine by FAME, Maine college students and alumni will receive financial literacy and proactive education debt management services free-of-charge. SALT is the industry-leading financial empowerment program created by ASA to improve the financial capabilities of college students and alumni, as well as to assist student loan borrowers once they enter repayment. In addition to one-on-one counseling and guidance, students and alumni will have access to online tools as part of ASA’s membership program, including: a highly interactive, experience-based financial education curriculum; a

personalized dashboard by which students may track their loans; interactive calculators; access to job and scholarship searches; and other benefits and rewards to help reduce the cost of attending college. FAME will launch a pilot version of the program this fall when students return to class. The pilot program will include up to nine participating Maine colleges and universities and will be funded by the Maine College Access Challenge Grant. Students should contact their college directly for more information about SALT. As a public purpose, nonprofit organization, ASA is committed to offering SALT services free of charge to student and alumni members by sharing the costs of service delivery with like-minded stakeholders who want to develop student financial capabilities. Since SALT’s launch earlier this year, more than eighty colleges and universities from across the country have signed up to give their students and alumni

access to the program. FAME is the first non-college entity to partner with SALT. “This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between two student loan service providers to address the problems of college affordability and student debt,” stated ASA President Paul Combe. “This kind of creative solution is critical, especially because our nation’s higher education system traditionally does not include these types of proactive activities that teach students the best way to pay for college and manage the resulting debt. We believe the Maine initiative can serve as a replicable model for other states wrangling with these issues,” he added. According to the Project on Student Debt and the Class of 2010, Maine ranks second in the nation for the highest debt level among four-year college graduates, with an average of $29,983 per student. At an

interest rate of 6.8 percent, such debt translates into average monthly payments of $345 for more than 10 years, with total interest expected to be repaid totaling $11,422. “Maine students often try to navigate the college financing and loan repayment waters with inadequate knowledge of the process and without thinking through the consequences of their indebtedness,” said FAME Chief Executive Officer Beth Bordowitz. “FAME has many initiatives in place to provide that knowledge. With the launch of SALT, FAME is providing another opportunity for Maine students to be better prepared to plan their futures.” Previous ASA programs have demonstrated that students provided with proactive, customized and targeted communication, such as those provided via SALT, are 50 percent less likely to fail in loan repayment.

LCRED Approves Governor's Nominee, Jeanne Paquette, as Maine Department Labor Commissioner AUGUSTA — Deputy Commissioner of Labor Jeanne Paquette’s nomination for Commissioner of Labor was approved by the Legislature’s Committee on Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development (LCRED). In a 10-0 vote, LCRED unanimously decided in favor of recommending her to the Maine Senate for confirmation. Paquette will now go before the Maine Senate for hearing and confirmation vote on Thursday, September 6, 2012. If confirmed by the Senate, she will serve as the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor. Paquette has served as Deputy Commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor since July 2011. “I am pleased LCRED has approved Deputy Commissioner Paquette. Her knowledge of the Department of Labor, experience with employment issues, and dedication to Maine’s workforce make her a fitting candidate for this position. I wish her well in the final steps of the confirmation process,” said Governor LePage. Paquette began her testimony by recalling her Maine ancestors and considering what their advice would be to her as commissioner, “What would these and others say to me as I take on this job in these difficult times? Well, I believe they would tell me…to work hard, listen to all sides, be honest, trust your gut and don’t make it about you…make it about the citizens of Maine. And that’s exactly what I intend to do.” Paquette has worked as deputy commissioner since July 2011; there, her previous experiences as a business owner and a human resources specialist inform her understanding of how the Department of Labor interacts with both employees and employers. She has more than 20 years’ experience in human resources management, where she specialized in both training and management development. Her background in human resources led her to found several industry-related publications and websites, including the Employment Times, HR Times and MyJobWave.com. Prior to founding her media businesses in 1999, which later

merged with Sun Media Group, Paquette held the position of vice president, human resources at Androscoggin Bank based in Lewiston, Maine. She has also previously served as the director of human resources at Creative Work Systems, a non-profit serving people with disabilities. She has served as a past member of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Maine Jobs Council and several non-profit boards. “Throughout my life, my goal has been to connect good people with good jobs and careers, and I see the role of Commissioner as continuing that mission. I know that creating more opportunities to put Maine people to work in meaningful, permanent jobs is a goal of both this administration and this legislature,” Paquette told the committee. In 2012, Paquette was inducted into the Society for Human Resource Management Maine State Council’s HR Hall of Fame, which honors individuals who helped set the stage or evolve the human resources profession in Maine. She holds an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Dean College, in Franklin, Mass., and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Kean University in Union, New Jersey. She and her family reside in North Yarmouth. The Department of Labor administers Maine’s unemployment insurance system, is responsible for ensuring the safety of public employees and provides workforce development leadership and vocational rehabilitation services throughout the state. Under the LePage Administration, the department has focused on connecting Mainers to jobs and helping businesses create jobs through strengthening our workforce development system, improving outreach to businesses and clarifying employment regulations. The mission of the Department of Labor is to serve Maine workers and businesses by providing assistance and retraining when jobs are lost; helping people prepare for and find jobs; protecting workers and researching and analyzing employment data to support job growth.

The internship hunt: What students should know about landing a great position (ARA) – This is the time of year when companies converge on college campuses looking for the best and brightest students. Recruiters - from financial services firms to high tech companies - battle it out to lure potential interns to their branding and recruiting events in hopes of enticing them to intern at their company. For students, it's the ultimate opportunity to get a foot in the door at a company where they'd like to have a career. “This is a great time to be a student in the market. It's not only exciting to see the all opportunities that are available, but students can learn a lot from the process of finding an internship,” says Ebony Thomas, director of campus recruiting at Prudential Financial. Thomas says there are many things to love about finding an internship this fall, but here are her top reasons.

It’s all about dressing for success. If students don't have the appropriate clothes for recruiting events, it's time to shop for a look that sends the right message to recruiters and hiring managers. Most college students have clothes for the classroom that pull doubleduty for social outings (aka rush party, clubs, etc). “Those looks will get you noticed in the wrong way at recruiting events,” Thomas adds. Though funds can be limited, she suggests finding two to three interchangeable pieces for interaction with corporate recruiters. The ability to expand personal networks and make new friends is one of the best perks of finding the perfect internship. At each event a student attends, there are opportunities to meet and get to know representatives from many different companies. Thomas also suggests networking with

upperclassmen who have connected with the employers in the past. “Networking with them will give you tips on how to be successful in social, teaming and interviewing segments of the process,” she notes. Many companies are getting more innovative in their approach to draw you to their events to get to know potential interns. “We see companies offering new experiences to broaden your horizon and creating challenges that are meant to be memorable for the intern candidates,” Thomas says. These recruiting experiences could range from rock climbing, gourmet cooking classes, to whitewater rafting. “Events like these allow companies to get to know how you'll work in teams and under pressure.” Interviewing is an essential part of landing the internship, and by far, the most challenging. Knowing what to say and how to say it is invaluable. Meeting with different company representatives and recruiters can help you polish interpersonal skills that are key to successful interviews. For those who are truly committed to finding an internship, it's the perfect opportunity to learn to sell yourself. Learn to be an advocate for your skills, knowledge and potential. Learning new skills that may lead to leadership opportunities and also transfer

back into the classroom are key reasons why finding the internship is both useful and fun. Finding a paid internship is essential. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the average intern wage for a senior in a four-year undergraduate program is $17.57 per hour. Compare that to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, and students who land internships will be light years ahead of peers working in service or a job not connected to their field of study. Landing the job is the one of the top reasons to love finding the internship. The NACE 2012 Job Outlook survey found that nearly 75 percent of employers prefer to hire candidates with relevant work experience - and that work experience is gained through interning in your field of study or interest. As an additional point, Thomas recommends that college students who are in the market for an internship shouldn't overlook the obvious: Start early and get to know the school's career services counselors, who can offer students a great deal of support. “Career counselors can be the ultimate match maker to introduce you to many internship options and help you find companies that could be a good match.”
