Employment Times Announces Name Change Maine’s First Help–Wanted Publication Matures to Strengthen Recruitment Advertising Services to Local Employers We are pleased to announce that we have merged Maine’s first help wanted publication, The Employment Times, and the later-found job board, MyJobWave.com, to create My Job Wave, in print and online. Combining these two product names have allowed us to more easily explain our services, while offering the same great products. We have simplified all areas of our company and will stay committed to our mission: to create, communicate, and publish local career opportunities throughout Maine and New Hampshire.

With a new innovative website and software, and an ever-growing community involvement, we are positioned to continue to provide effective recruitment advertising plans built to attract ideal candidates. We will continue to operate as a Sun Media company, based out of Lewiston with a recent second location in Falmouth, to better serve southern Maine and New Hampshire. One of the founders of Employment Times, Jeanne Paquette, had a desire to connect local employers with job seekers. Jeanne was very active in the community and became quickly well known,

involving herself in many local industry associations, chambers, and educational events. Today, we continue her involvement as we benefit greatly from being local as we are able act as an advocate for our clients when the opportunity presents itself. We believe that an effective recruitment campaign tells the public why they want to work for you. We are eager to connect our fellow local companies with their best candidates by way of our print and online products. We thank you for your business and support and look forward to helping you with your future hiring needs.

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one. Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Have a style in mind before you begin. A quick check on resumewriting on the internet should give you several options to choose from. Your software also may offer some options from which to choose and may even offer a template to work through. If you don’t have computer access, however, you might visit your local library and see if they offer computers for use. Most libraries today do and the use of a computer will not only be helpful in providing you with tips in putting your resume together but, will also offer you an easier and more professional means of printing it.

Tip s

By Amie Parker, Bates College

Successful for A Job Fair Before the Fair √ Take your calendar or date book.

√ Create an ample supply of resumes. Make sure you proof them first—they must be error free. Carry your resumes in a folder to protect them from wrinkles, stains, etc.

√ Be prepared to talk about your experiences, skills, and qualifications.

Some employers may want to schedule interviews soon after the job fair. Dress Like you Want Their “Best” Job

Practice is the best preparation for your personal “sales pitch”.

√ Research the companies in attendance

It’s important that you can converse with them knowledgably. √ Develop a list of questions for the employers that interest you.

√ Select conservative, tailored clothing that is clean and wrinkle free. √ Excessive jewelry and perfumes or colognes, can hurt you—treat a job fair like an interview.

At the Fair √ Leave your friends, family members and pets at home.

Bringing your loved ones (unless they are looking for a job, too) is simply unprofessional. √ The first one to two hours of a fair tend to be the busiest.

Waiting until after the initial rush may prove beneficial and allow you more time to speak with the recruiters. √ When you first enter the fair, take a moment to orient yourself to the environment.

Review the layout and think about how you want to navigate the room. Prioritize employers you want to meet. Some tables may have lines of people waiting to speak to the recruiter; wait in line patiently, your turn will come. √ Many employers will have “give-aways”.

It’s OK to take one, but don’t grab too many or make it look like you shopping for your kids and grandkids.

√ When you step up to the table:

1. Smile. It shows confidence and encourages conversation 2. Extend your hand for a firm, confident handshake and introduce yourself 3. Offer your resume √ Be prepared to have an “interview-like” conversation.

Talk about your skills, knowledge areas and abilities. √ Ask for a business card from an employer. √ Ask about the next steps in the application process.

If the employer suggests that you call if you are interested in the position, make every effort to do so the next day. √ Before you walk away from the table, shake their hand and say “Thank You!”

After the Fair √ Keep in mind that employers may meet hundreds of people at the fair.

In order to make your 1st impression “stick”, you must follow up on your job leads. √ Use the business cards you collected to write a follow-up letter.

1. Remind them that you met them at the (NAME) Job Fair and thank them for the information that they shared with you. 2. Restate your qualifications and interest in the position. Include a copy of your resume.

√ Follow up phone calls are often effective.

However, be cautious not to harass an employer by calling several times in a short time period.

Make Getting the Next Interview Your Goal By Tony Calabrese, Absolute Transitions

Ask job seekers what their goal is in terms of their employment search most of them will tell you that it is "to get a job." While that certainly is the intent of the end result of their job search campaign, one of the early lessons I learned in my Five O'Clock Club career coaching studies is that your goal throughout your campaign is to "get the next interview." As I continue to work with a growing range of clients I am observing first hand the value of this type of focus. The job search in and of itself is very stressful and can cause great swings in one's emotions no matter how well their campaign is organized. However, I find my clients most energized when they have identified a new contact with whom they have the opportunity to discuss their search, or know they have an upcoming interview which may help lead them to an eventual position.

When you stop and think about it this actually makes a lot of sense. When one finds themselves in job search, in the early stages the only ones who may actually know they're in search are close family and friends other than the individual in search themselves. Close family and friends while many times supportive are too close to you and can be emotionally tied to your journey. As you begin to reach out and first speak to those that don't know you about your search several things begin to happen. First, you begin to gain clarity as to how to present yourself both in terms of who you are, what you have done and what you are seeking to do as you go forward. As you learn to become a better interviewer, you use the exchange as both an opportunity to get and give information. You learn to be as prepared or more prepared as the one you are interviewing by both having researched some on the topic you are about to speak and by having your questions ready so as to learn what it is that you don't know and which will help benefit you in your search going forward. Those that get proficient at the process learn to listen from the perspective of a consultant. A consultant is always looking to hear what it is that the other person finds to be difficult for them, and seeks an opportunity to show how they are able to help address the problem. Finally, an individual that has a solution for another and sees an opportunity to help will follow-up with that person offering a proposal of how they may be able to solve their issue. The predominant tendency many people have while they are in job search is to approach things passively. They may send out many resumes' to a number of different companies. They'll meet someone who says they know a person that may be able to help them and then wait for their contact to set up a meeting with another as opposed to taking the contact information and setting up the meeting themselves. After a job interview they'll write a thank you note, but then just sit back and wait on contact from a company as opposed to following up to gain an understanding of where the company is in their search process or if new developments have emerged. There is a great sense of not wanting to upset the hiring manager or resource with whom you desire to speak from fear of being perceived as a bother. Yes a focus and strategy of making getting the next interview your goal takes courage. It does involve a lot of persistence

on the part of the job searcher. However, it certainly keeps one involved as an active participant in their search. Those who fully commit to this approach learn quickly to talk to as many individuals as possible that may help them in their search. They'll take the time to set up meetings with those who may not have a job opening at the current time, but who may be able to provide needed information or guidance as they pursue their search in their field of choice. They'll not focus their energies all on one job opening, but look to have several opportunities working for them at the same time. Above all, they reach the point where they realize it is worse to sit back and wait for something to happen, as opposed to possibly being told they are no longer a candidate for a position and knowing they have made every effort to present what they offer to that position. Therefore, if you find yourself in job search in 2012, either through your own choice or through circumstances that are not of your choosing, remember finding that next job is the end point to which you are looking to get. The true goal is to talk to as many people as you can along the way about your search. And, whether those interviews are just to gain valuable information about the field or type of position you are seeking, to make more people in the profession aware you are in job search or actually to interview for a position itself, you always should be looking to get that next interview. AUGUSTA — Governor Paul LePage announced legislation on Feb. 22, 2012 that would merge the Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources with the Maine Department of Conservation into a single Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The goal of the legislation is to strengthen Maine's natural-resource economy in the areas of forestry, farming and conservation. This legislation is expected to go to the Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry for consideration and approval. "Farming and forestry are an important part of Maine's heritage, and can play a significant role in our economic engine," said Governor LePage. "These industries are important to Maine's future, and it is important we maximize the potential of our natural resource-based economy to provide jobs and economic prosperity to Maine people." Agriculture Commissioner Walter Whitcomb, Conservation Commissioner Bill Beardsley, along with many leaders in the natural resource industry, support the Governor's plan. Many agree that there is a possibility to greatly enhance Maine's forestry and farming industries, while capitalizing on our

natural resources. "Growing Maine's natural economy while protecting its long term productivity needs the support of more concentrated services from a single department," noted Commissioner Whitcomb. "The sustainable goals envisioned by Maine farmers, forest owners and those who use the parks and public lands will be better coordinated by merging the wide array of resource related skills within the talented workforce of these two departments," added Whitcomb. "Agriculture and forestry, conservation and public access to Maine's natural resources are all intertwined," said Commissioner Beardsley. "A merger that yokes the two departments simply makes sense. By combining forces, we can focus on the scientific foundation and the common ground we share as we pursue a 21st-century natural-resource economy for Maine," Beardsley continued. Representative Jeff Timberlake, RTurner, is the lead sponsor of the bill and has been involved in the farm community his entire life. "It makes sense to combine the resources of both departments to emphasize the importance of being good stewards of Maine's land," said Representative Timberlake.
