WWC offering New Ventures course

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

LEWISTON — Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community is offering a free, 12-week New Ventures business planning course on consecutive Thursdays.

It begins with an orientation on April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by interviews with each candidate. Classes will begin April 12 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and continue until graduation on June 28.

the end of 12 weeks, those participating will have a written business plan.

The course will cover topics such as customers, competitors, marketing, financial record keeping, taxes, legal aspects, financing and much more. At

For more information on Women, Work and Community or to register for the training, call Shirley at 7536505

Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for!

Class size is limited to 15. The deadline for applications is March 19.

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

March 30 is application deadline For Maine Family Business Awards BRUNSWICK – Maine’s familyowned businesses are being reminded that the deadline for nominations for the 13th Maine Family Business Awards is March 30, according to Gina Weathersby, executive director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business.

• Maddy Corson Award (fewer than 25 employees) to LT’s Inc., Portland, “…they trust their knowledge and intuition,” said the judges.

“Maine-based family-owned businesses with goals to improve their work, and their visibility, always find opportunities through the Awards,” said Weathersby. While the Awards recognize accomplishments, during the application process, Weathersby reports, “…companies take a closer look at themselves and, ultimately, through the eyes of the Awards judges, better reflect on their own firm’s challenges and accomplishments.”

• Shep Lee Award (community service) to Halcyon Yarn, Bath, “…they live their passion.”

The Awards take place May 14 at the Mariott at Sable Oaks in South Portland. The Awards showcase a firm’s achievements, feature a nationally prominent speaker – also from a family-owned business – and open up networking. The 2011 Awards drew nearly 300 who learned about finalists, and winners, in these categories:

• Leon Gorman Award (25-plus employees) to AlliedCook Construction, Scarborough, “…they have great core values.”

Two new awards, Customer Service and First-Generation, are being introduced to expand opportunities for family businesses. Also new this year is the ability to apply online at www.fambusiness.org where a modified application speeds the process. Any family-owned Maine-based business, with two or more family members involved, is eligible. Nominations can be made by anyone, whether involved in the business or not. There is no cost to enter. An independent judging panel selects winners based upon criteria that include business success, positive business and family linkages, contributions to the community and

industry, family participation, work environment, communication, innovative business practices or strategies. Fulfilling each criterion is not required. The website also contains information for businesses not entering the Awards but interested in the Institute’s programs, its membership, and sponsorship availabilities. The Institute for Family-Owned Business is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization committed to supporting, strengthening, and empowering family-owned businesses through a wide range of educational programs

and networking opportunities. While the Institute’s mission is to serve business owners, most of the Institute’s programs are also open to employees, and occasionally, to nonmembers. Application forms can be downloaded, or contact the Institute office at 207.798.2667. Maine Family Business Awards are in partnership with Verrill Dana LLP. Other sponsors include White Rock Distilleries, People’s United Bank, Memic, Bangor Daily News, DMM Inc, MaineToday Media, Mainebiz, and Sun Media Group.

Resume Writing Advice for Total Beginners By Melinda Edwards Are you a total beginner in the complicated world of the job market? If you are, you may need some pieces of resume writing advice that should tell you the do's and don'ts of job hunting. At this critical point of job searching, there is a need for you to know and follow simple rules to avoid committing huge mistakes. A list of do's First of all, always remember that applications are usually screened by hiring managers or employers in less than a minute. As such, you need to maximize that time and opportunity to show your qualifications and competencies as a likely candidate for the job. Make sure you placed any possible contact information that allows people to reach you during business hours. Write your qualifications summary in a simple and straightforward way, including the job title you are applying for. Prepare a list of your jobs in reverse

chronological order. List them according to its importance to the reader such as title or position, name of employer, city/state address, and dates of employment. If you are targeting a different career path, you should put more emphasis on your transferable skills. Make your copy more meaningful by adding accomplishments, apart from enumerating your job responsibilities. If you can possibly quantify your accomplishments, that is, if you know how many customers or clients you served, or the figures of increased sales and profits, feel free to do so.

A list of don'ts

different kind of job.

One worn-out resume writing advice is the so-called "one-page rule." Don't be pressured by having to squeeze everything in one page. Why? If you clearly have more important things to say, it is appropriate to add another page, but avoid going beyond two pages as much as possible.

Personal pronouns such as I, my, and me are a no-no. Use concrete and consistent action verbs and adverbs in your work experience section and qualifications summary. Make your application accomplishmentsoriented, rather than duty-oriented. Duties automatically come with any job, but accomplishments are something that expose your work attitude and performance.

There is no need for you to state your height, weight, age, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, sex, ethnicity, or social security number. Also, you don't need to explain your reasons for leaving your previous job. It can possibly stir controversy.

To make your document reader-friendly, consider using bullets. Apply designs that are unique and distinct, rather than just copying templates and wizards available on the Internet.

There is also no need to include hobbies and other trivial stuff that are totally irrelevant to your target job. However, you may share these during interview conversations, if the situation seems appropriate.

Before you submit your application, carefully proofread it to ensure that there are no spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors.

Don't mention skills and job activities that you don't want to do anymore, especially if you are targeting a managerial position or a totally

As a final resume writing advice, hiring managers and employers want to know the truth about you, so don't ever tell lies. About the Author: Melinda Edwards works as a career consultant and has been invited in many forums and events on human resource management. Want a Better

Career? Everyone wants to be successful in the workplace, but sometimes it's hard to figure out how to get your career moving in the right direction. Follow these five tips to ensure that you build skills and start movement to where you want to be.

• Start from where you are - Make every effort to build your skills in your current job so that if and when you make a move or go for a promotion, you have something to take with you or show. It's usually better to go step by step, rather than hope for a big promotion someday. Focus on doing the best possible job you can now, and plan future career moves carefully. • Sharpen your computer skills - Today, it really doesn't matter what your job is - at some point you will probably need to bee proficient in using a computer. Try to learn everything you can so that you are more marketable.

• Develop a learning attitude - Learning in your career should never come to a standstill. Commit yourself to a lifetime of workplace learning and it will pay off nicely. • Learn to work well with others - In almost every job, you will be asked to work with others. • Network - Always talk to others in your industry or profession. This will help you to know what skills you need and keep you on top of job opportunities.

What, in fact, does it mean to be reasonable? What does it mean to be unreasonable? And what does it mean to reason? According to James Allen in “As a Man Thinketh”, when we declare someone as being unreasonable, we usually mean that he or she is violating the ideal of thinking about something and arriving at the “truth” of a situation by using intellect. So it follows that people who are dubbed reasonable in situations are looked upon as using their higher powers of intellect to make a decision and in ways that are likely considered gentle and compassionate. Now, we've all been unreasonable in life at one time or another-that is we've lost touch with our higher selves and resorted to our lower faculties during which we behaved in ways that were likely considered unthinking and selfish. Most people feel unhappy or undone when they abandon reason for something more akin to animal behavior. But how does a person remain reasonable throughout some of the stressful sit¬uations that seem to be just around each corner in life? Here are some tips for trying to maintain your equilibrium in life's trials: • Stop before you speak or act. Think about what you are about to say or do? Is it unkind? Is it vengeful? Is it self-centered? If so, you may have just thrown off the cloak of reason and donned unreasonableness. • Is what you are considering saying or doing sweet and forgiving? Is it gently persuasive? • Is what you are about to do or say based on any type of prejudice? • Are you trying to prove or disprove something? • Have you carefully weighed and considered everything important about the situation? • Is what you are about to do or say kind, moderate and just?

Informational Interviews: How to Get Them By Chris A. Perry

A stronger connection or link between you both can only help you get an interview.

Informational interviews have a number of things going against them. They sound boring, ineffective and hard to get. However, an informational interview can make or break your job search if used correctly. They work because they allow you to make a personal connection with a real human being who is typically in a much better position to endorse you and recommend you internally in his/her company. Here are some tips for effectively requesting an informational interview:

1. No phone calls, please. Emailing or sending a message via LinkedIn allows the recipient to choose to respond at their own leisure and doesn't interrupt their schedule. 2. Don't forget about grammar. Always proofread everything you write to any professional. If possible, ask someone else you trust to read your outgoing messages to these professionals just for outside perspective. This is especially important if English is not your first language. 3. Include a catchy subject line. No matter how you know the person you

want to contact, the subject of your message has to be personal and direct to catch their attention and move them to read it. Always include their name. If you don't know the person, consider using "John – Question from a Student" or "John – Request for Informational Interview." If you do know them, I recommend "John – Request from Chris Perry" or if you don't know them personally, but went to the same college or have something in common, I recommend something along the lines of "John Request from a W&M Student." 4. Briefly introduce yourself. In a short

first paragraph, state your name, who you are and what you are doing. Remember, busy people don't have time to read long messages. Keep it short, sweet and to the point. 5. Promote your commonalities. If someone who knows them has referred you, or you have something significant in common with the person (i.e. college, professional organization), make sure to include this. A stronger connection or link between you both can only help you get an interview. 6. Don't ask for a job, that's not their job! When you request an

informational interview, DON'T ask them upfront for help to get you a job in their company. They already know you're interested in opportunities in their company or you wouldn't be contacting them. Ask them for the opportunity to speak about THEIR career, how THEY got involved in it, THEIR company and/or its culture. 7. NEVER send your resume. A resume looks presumptuous and inconsiderate and implies that you expect them to take time to look at it and more time to send it to the right person BEFORE they have even had a chance to "yes" or "no" to your request. 8. Make yourself contactable. Make sure to have an email/message signature with all possible methods to contact you listed. This way, you look professional and they can get in touch with you in whatever way they prefer. Here is an informational interview request example (to be sent to someone you don't currently know) that puts all of these tips to work:

Subject: John - Career Question Body: Dear Mr. John Smith, My name is Jane Doe, and I currently work in marketing in Atlanta, GA. I am pursuing a long-term career in marketing and specifically career opportunities at COMPANY NAME. I am interested in speaking with you about your career, COMPANY NAME's culture and your marketing team's various programs and activities. Would you be willing to set

up a short 30-minute informational interview with me in the coming week or two so I can learn more about your career in marketing and your company? I truly appreciate your time and your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Sincerely, Jane Doe Email Address - Cell: Phone Number I actually used these tips and this example in my own job search and experienced a very high and positive response rate that eventually led to a real job interview and my current career. Therefore, I recommend you leverage these in your own efforts to help you reach the hiring managers behind the job postings and achieve job search success.

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, but here's one small way to work a little positivity in your daily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nice thought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positive thought into your conversation. It's a small way of making the world just a little nicer, and it just takes a minute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Governor LePage Launches “Certified Business Friendly Community” Program The goal of the program is to encourage business development in communities throughout Maine. The program will be administered by the Department of Economic & Community Development with existing resources. AUGUSTA – Governor Paul LePage announced the administration’s “Certified Business Friendly Community” program at the Blaine House on Mar. 6. The goal of the program is to encourage business development in communities throughout Maine. The program will be administered by the Department of Economic & Community Development with existing resources.

Business Friendly Communities will be certified on a quarterly basis, beginning May 2012.

“What a business looks for is stability, reliability and consistency.” – Gov. LePage

“The number one focus of my administration is jobs,” said Governor LePage. “(Tuesday’s) announcement is another step in the direction toward partnering with business, to ensure they have the tools they need to expand and create jobs in Maine.” Communities are encouraged to apply for the program, and applications can be submitted at any time. Applications can be submitted by communities, chambers of commerce, regional development authorities, trade organizations, businesses or individuals, but require the approval of the community being considered.

“What a business looks for is stability, reliability and consistency. That’s what we need to bring to the forefront,” added Governor LePage. “Businesses face many obstacles. They do not need — nor should they be focusing on — dealing with local, state and

community is “Business Friendly.” These items include looking at customer service, business involvement and collaboration, input from the public, and licensing and permitting. Each community will be evaluated on an individual basis.

“The Department of Economic & Community Development is excited to play a role in helping our local communities become more business friendly,” said George Gervais, Commissioner. “Our focus is trying to challenge communities to reduce red tape and promote job creation, and we are looking to partner with them in their efforts to accomplish this.” If a community is deemed a “Certified Business Friendly Community” they will receive an award of certification presented by the Governor, recognition of the State of Maine DECD website, the community will become a key part of Maine’s business attraction strategy, and an “Open for Business” sign to be displayed. In addition, Certified Business Friendly Communities will receive bonus points in future Community Development Block Grant applications (pending program approval). Certification is for two years, and communities are encouraged to re-apply.

Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end goal. Consider the following questions: - What is your work experience? If there is a particular industry in which you worked previously, it will be easier to move from one job to another in that same industry. For example, if you worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change positions within the food-service industry. A career change – for example from finance to social services – might require some additional education and training. - What is your education? Even if your first job did not match your educational background, your education and training can help you move to a new position. For example, maybe you received training in business applications and office procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the

education you have, might suit you for a position with an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter long-term career options. - Do you have the skills to switch from one industry to another? If you want to switch from one career to another, you can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous positions and make notes on how they would relate to a new career. If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps because they were specialized or you worked in a small environment that did not keep up with changing technology – consider returning to school for some training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit working to go back to school, first consider taking a night class or two at the local community college and explore your options.

Enhancing your career can depend on how ready you are to take advantage of opportunity when it presents itself. That means that you need to be ready to introduce yourself quickly to people you might run into casually in the office or in other business settings. Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?” on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he has several versions of his own introduction prepared depending on audience, environment and need. Myatt says that a good introduction imbues you with credibility and confidence and allows you to tell others what you do and how you are working toward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, or meeting needs the company has pinpointed for itself. And Myatt says you should be able to do this in 50 words or less. So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My name is Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. I specialize in making sure new clients are comfortable in their knowledge about our services before they commit their money to us. And this year, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percent client satisfaction.” Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use it when the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments can open doors to a bigger future.
