Enhancing your career can depend on how ready you are to take advantage of opportunity when it presents itself. That means that you need to be ready to introduce yourself quickly to people you might run into casually in the office or in other business settings. Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?” on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he has several versions of his own introduction prepared depending on audience, environment and need.

AUGUSTA – The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) announced on June 29 that various fees within the NextGen College Investing Plan® (NextGen) will be reduced. Effective June 29, 2012, total annual asset-based fees will be reduced in most portfolios in the Client Direct (self-directed) Series. Also, total annual asset-based fees will be reduced in all unit classes in the Client Select (advisor-sold) Series. In addition, initial sales charges on A Unit class purchases will be reduced for certain asset classes. These and other changes can be reviewed in more detail in the Supplements dated June 29, 2012 to the Client Direct Series and Client Select Series Program Descriptions. Most portfolio fees will be reduced between four and eleven basis points. Fees are being reduced up to eleven basis points in the actively available A and C Unit Classes in the Client Select Series. The Account Maintenance Fee within the Client Direct Series has been eliminated. For a complete list of changes to the various portfolios, please visit FAME’s Website at: www.famemaine.com/NextGenLan ding.aspx “We are pleased to be reducing fees within NextGen,” stated FAME Chief Executive Officer Beth Bordowitz. “We are able to offer these enhancements due to the program’s success, and we’re grateful to Merrill Lynch, the Program Manager, for their cooperation in reducing their fees. It is important for the program to remain competitive with other Section 529 plans around the nation while offering a variety of choices for investors. FAME and its Advisory Committee on College Savings, which is chaired by the State Treasurer, continually evaluate NextGen to identify opportunities to enhance and improve

the plan.” NextGen is one of the largest Section 529 college savings programs in the country, with almost $6 billion in assets as of May 31, 2012. It was created by the Maine Legislature in 1999 as a qualified tuition program under Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. NextGen is a taxadvantaged investing program of the Finance Authority of Maine designed to help families prepare for qualified higher education expenses. Merrill Lynch is the program manager and underwriter of the plan. Anyone at least age 18 can open an account, regardless of income or residency, and assets can be used at any accredited U.S. post-secondary institution. Matching grants are available to eligible accounts. FAME is a quasi-independent state agency that provides innovative financial solutions to help Maine citizens pursue businesses and educational opportunities. To learn more about FAME, please visit www.famemaine.com. NextGen is a Section 529 plan administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). Before you invest in NextGen, request a NextGen Program Description from your Maine bank or financial advisor, or call FAME at 1-800-228-3734 and read it carefully. The Program Description contains more complete information, including investment objectives, charges, expenses and risks of investing in NextGen, which you should carefully consider before investing. You also should consider whether your home state or your designated beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other benefits that are only available for investments in such state’s 529 plan. Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated, a registered brokerdealer, member SIPC, is the program manager and underwriter.

Myatt says that a good introduction imbues you with credibility and confidence and allows you to tell others what you do and how you are working toward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, or meeting needs the company has pinpointed for itself. And Myatt says you should be able to do this in 50 words or less. So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My name is Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. I specialize in making sure new clients are comfortable in their knowledge about our services before they commit their money to us. And this year, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percent client satisfaction.” Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use it when the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments can open doors to a bigger future.

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, but here's one small way to work a little positivity in your daily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nice thought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positive thought into your conversation. It's a small way of making the world just a little nicer, and it just takes a minute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Are You Taking a Vacation From Job-Hunting? By Jack Mulcahy Why is it that the resume business seems to dry up during the months of July and August, and again during November and December? "That's easy," you'll say. "Everybody goes on vacation during those times. Nobody's hiring." While it's true that quite a few vacations happen during the aforementioned periods, one thing that never takes a vacation is job openings. The widget assembler who gets a better offer in July isn't going to wait til September to leave the job and create the opening, right? Nor is the CFO going to hold off a few months until "vacation season" is over to announce her retirement. So why aren't you taking advantage of the summer months? Job-hunting is a fulltime job that doesn't take time off for vacations or sick days. You should be doing something every day that pushes you close to your employment goal. As noted at the beginning of this article, the resume business dries up during July and August, and again during November and December. If your competition's out taking those months off, doesn't that improve the possibilities for you, even if only slightly? Successful people develop a talent for seeing opportunity where others do not. It's reminiscent of the story of two rival shoe salesmen who were on the same ocean liner. The ship suffered some mechanical upset and they found themselves on the proverbial desert island, populated by friendly people who wore no shoes in the tropical weather. At the end of their stay on the island, each salesman communicated to his home office. The first one's communique said simply, "Desert island with no opportunity. Nobody wears shoes." The second salesman's communique said, "Unlimited opportunity here! Everybody needs shoes!" Opportunities exist everywhere; you simply must learn to discern them. Some cases will be fairly obvious; an island full of barefoot people just waiting for you to come along. Others won't be as easily recognized; a vice president who steps down, enabling a manager to take his place, which leaves an opening for that manager's job which you just know you could do. The job you know you want to do. The point is, job openings don't go on vacation. You must follow the news from every company that might be a target every day, and be aware of every move, every opening created by a move. How else are you going to know when that vice president decides to leave? Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/7169657

Do you manage your career or does it manage you? The new job arena is one of instability and uncertainty. Are you drifting along in your job at the mercy of the economic waves? Staying on top of your career and your resumé has never been so important. The way to manage your career in an unpredictable environment is by being proactive. Even if you are one of the rare breed that have a written plan for your career path, you need to be open to alternatives for the bumps along the way. John Kromboltz came up with a theoretic approach to career development called "Planned Happenstance". It involves using what you learn along your life path in various experiences to direct your career future. Planned happenstance is not to be confused with lack of planning. Many people are working in jobs they never expected to have because various life circumstances and lack of planning landed them there. For example, I don't hear children say, "I want to be a grocery store manager when I grow up," but there are plenty of grocery store managers out there. They may have started as cashiers and perhaps lacking direction or completion of a higher education, simply worked their way up over a number of years. Planned happenstance is having a general or specific direction, guided by learning from activities over time. However, it seems traditional career

planning combined with planned happenstance may be the best proactive choice of action. 1. The first step in planning is to update your resumé. That way, if an opportunity arises, you are prepared. Also, you really need to complete a profile on LinkedIn, the most used new tool by recruiters. The website is userfriendly and gives tips on improving your profile. 2. Next, develop what you would like your career path to look like, including positions you would like to hold, education you plan to obtain, and new skills you plan to develop. Use a blank sheet of paper and put it on a timeline with expected dates for each step and how you plan to accomplish the progression. ONET has a wealth of tool that can help you do this. 3. Then, you incorporate "Planned Happenstance" into your career path. Broadening your horizons is a good way to begin. This is achieved through engaging in interesting, exploratory, and beneficial career and personal growth activities such as ongoing learning opportunities, participation in industry associations, volunteer work, or other activities. Think about what your passions are and special skills in which you excel. Write possible activities on a separate sheet of paper. Then, make branches off your

timeline with possible areas from which you may consider deviating and what alternatives you might consider. Deviations could be alternative positions, careers, and/or industries. Also, consider self-employment or starting your own business. 4. Another critical piece of planned happenstance is keeping in contact with your network of family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. You never know when a contact may learn about an opportunity which piques your interest. Research shows that 60-80% of jobs are never advertised and are filled through networking. Interestingly, most jobs obtained through networking are through "weak connections". Weak connections are people to whom you do not have close or strong ties. For example, weak connections could be long lost classmates, casual acquaintances, former co-workers, or distant relatives. Be a network resource for those people as well, and they are more likely to think of you when hearing about an opportunity.

It's how we plan for and handle unplanned issues that determines how well we develop meaningful careers in the midst of it all. Planning for experiences that will keep you going in the direction you desire and incorporating what you learn into your career plan is the basis of planned happenstance. How Important is it that we Love our Jobs? Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) says we hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet most people he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it or tolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’s not necessary to be passionate about your job, you should be passionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’s what you do for yourself. Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re living your life less well than the individual who is passionate about work. Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Bird offers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living: • Write the essay or book that’s been in the back of your mind. • Take a class in a subject that engrosses you. • Teach a class in the subject that engrosses you. • Cook dinners that will make your friends swoon. • Go to your favorite sporting events. • Let the people you’re closest to know how much you adore them. The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love to do. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The important second step, Bird says, is to go for it.

GRE Tests give students more options than ever (NewsUSA) - Accepted by more institutions than any other graduate admissions test, the GRE revised General Test now provides more options and opportunities for test takers. Here are five reasons why there's never been a better time to take the GRE revised General Test. 1. It is the one test that applicants can take to apply to more than 3,000 graduate and business schools worldwide. GRE scores are used for admission to master's, MBA, Ph.D. and fellowship programs. 2. Considering business school? Nearly 900 business schools worldwide now accept GRE scores for admission into their MBA and other graduate business programs. MBA applicants around the world are now taking the GRE revised General Test with its test-taker friendly design, new ScoreSelect option, free services, and more advanced degree opportunities. Plus, the GRE revised General Test is less expensive than other graduate admissions tests used by business schools. "Accepting GRE scores is a win-win for both students and the graduate program,"said Harvie Wilkinson, Director of MBA Programs for the Gatton College of Business at the University of Kentucky. "The student now has more options, and with that, the business school becomes more diverse; with different backgrounds

working together, better projects are able to be produced." 3. The ScoreSelect option, available July 2012, helps individuals approach test day with more confidence, knowing they can send the scores they feel reflect their personal best. Now GRE test takers can decide which test scores to send to the institutions they designate. 4. The GRE revised General Test features a flexible, friendly design for a better test experience. Features include "mark and review" to tag questions so students can skip and return later and the ability to change answers, all within a section. An onscreen calculator is provided for the Quantitative Reasoning measure. 5. Test takers can prepare for the GRE revised General Test using free and low-cost tools available at www.ets.org/gre/prepare. These include: POWERPREP II software featuring full-length practice tests, GRE Math Review, The Official Guide to the GRE revised General Test, ScoreItNow! Online Writing Practice, and more. The test-taker friendly design, new ScoreSelect option and more advanced degree opportunities mean it just got easier for students to start their future now with the GRE revised General Test.
