ABOUT US The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) is dedicated to providing children ages four months to five years old with daily experiences filled with learning, laughter, and love. ECDC is operated by the City of Emeryville to provide families living, going to school, or working in Emeryville, a safe and caring center for their children. ECDC is open year round and provides care for over 100 children daily.

The center is staffed by certified, professional teachers who help children achieve growth in all areas of development. Bi-annual assessments and monthly observations are completed for parents to convey the progress of each child in all development areas.Age appropriate lunch and snacks for all ages are served. The center also boasts some of the best caregiver to child ratios anywhere in the Bay Area too. Opportunities abound daily for each child to explore, create, experiment, and savor the rewards that come with success!

ADVENTURE WORKS (K THROUGH 2ND GRADE) Adventure Works is a City of Emeryville after school subsidized program offered in conjunction with THE Emery Unified School district through ASES Grant. This full day extended after school program provides a warm, nurturing, and fun environment for students in grades K-2. (3RD THROUGH 6TH GRADE) Kids in Motion is a City of Emeryville subsidized after school program offered in conjunction with the Emery Unified School District through DASES Grant. Typical Kids in Motion programming includes: homework assistance, science exploration, gardening, cooperative games, dance, drama, sports and more.

Bring in Spring at Emeryville Recreation Center’s Spring Break Day Camp. Over the Emery Unified School District’s Spring Break we will incorporate hikes, games, and crafts all with a spring theme.

Join our dance specialists as they demonstrate and help your child with unique dance routines using basic hand and foot coordination dance moves to more advance moves with a hip hop twist! Students will spend time working on building their muscles while working out to the rhythm of the beat with the opportunity to learn new moves each week. Upon the conclusion of the class, students will get a chance to show off their moves in a parent showcase in May.

TEEN & ADULT PROGRAMS TEEN EXCURSIONS Teen Excursions are safe and fun Saturday outing designed just for teens. Teen Excursions will accept the first 20 participants.

ALL ACCESS GRANTED TEEN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Specifically designed for the developmental, creative and active needs of young teens in grades 7–9, this program provides the much needed transition between our after school program and our older teen “Leaders In Training” job readiness program. The Teen Lounge includes specially selected theme days with coordinating activities, weekly special events, and bi-monthly trips. The program offers activities to help young teens develop both their sense of self and independence in a safe environment. Activities include a homework club and tutoring time daily, mentoring program, community service projects, job shadowing, and health and counseling services/seminars. In addition, we’ll have crafts, cooking activities, games, dances, movie nights, special guest presentations, field trips and lots of fun!

Our highly trained recreation staff brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to ensure a positive after school adventure. This program is open to all teens in the greater 94608 zip code. Parents: This is not a drop-in program; all participants must pre-register and have their parents’ approval.

CAPOEIRA CAPOEIRA Capoeira (capo-AYE-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines music, dance, acrobatics and self-defense. Do to it’s African roots, music and songs accompanied by percussion are an integral part of each class. Capoeira gives you power, flexibility, endurance and allows for self-discovery that builds your self-confidence. CAPO KIDS CLASS The “Capo-Kids” program is geared towards children ages 5-7.

Children learn basic capoeira movements and music in a fun and playful environment. KAJUKENBO KUNG FU Kajukenbo Kung Fu is an eclectic, modern martial art founded in Hawaii in 1947. Kaj created as a new fighting system that emphasized effective skills for self-defense within the framework of graceful and powerful movement. The instructors are Sifu Kate Hobbs (fifth degree black belt in the Gaylord Method of Kaj Kung Fu) and assisted by third degree black belt Sifu Lynn Keslar and first degree black belt Sifu Sam Mende-Wong.

FAMILY CLASS 10:00am-12:00pm Open to family members of all ages, the class structure is built to support brand new beginners as well as students who have a regular Kajukenbo practice. The purpose of the class is to introduce families to Kajukenbo, give them a chance to learn some basic self-defense skills and offer the whole family a healthy start to their weekend.

The class includes conditioning, rigorous repetition of basic strikes and blocks, and traditional forms practice. Students are guided through a vibrant and vigorous warm-up for the first hour, then a snack and water break, followed by specific Kajukenbo skills training.

She discovered hoop-dance in 2007 and has been teaching both adults and children since 2008. Kaye experiences and teaches hoop-dance as a movement practice, with never-ending potential for growth, as well as both a fun and invigorating path to wellness. Get your hoop on every Monday night, make new friends, and be a part of the larger hoop community. ADULT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS Are you looking for an indoor facility to host your next event?

The City of Emeryville has four indoor facilities that are available to reserve exclusively for your special occasion, gathering, or event:

The Bridgecourt Room The Bridgecourt Room has an urban loft vibe with amenities that include; a seating capacity of up to 40 people, a wet bar/ kitchen area, bathroom, and free Wi-Fi. This room also comes equipped with a projection screen and tables/chairs.

Emeryville Child Development Center You will have access to an industrial sized catering kitchen, a 100-person capacity multi-purpose room with a connected outdoor courtyard and a brand new, secure tot lot with playground.

Emeryville Senior Center Our main hall has vaulted ceilings, hardwood flooring and can host up to 250 people. The Senior Center comes equipped with a stage, P.A. and sound system, tables and chairs and much more. If our main hall is too large for your event, our upstairs room is perfect for hosting smaller functions.

Meet Your Instructor:

Lan Shaw

Lan worked overseas in international business in the 1990s. After earning her MBA in England in 1998, Lan relocated to the Bay Area in 1999 as a business consultant, working closely with several Fortune 500 companies.

She now works at Edward Jones Investments, helping individual investors work toward achieving their financial goals. Lan is active in her community, serving on several local Advisory Committees and volunteering for several organizations, including the Emeryville Senior Center.

She also has taken cello lessons and has become a little league baseball umpire.

FINANCIAL WORKSHOP: YOUR SOURCE FOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION This FREE educational course is designed to help individuals learn more about investment terms and topics, develop a financial strategy, and plan for retirement. This is a very basic, objective, eighthour non-accredited adult education course. You don’t have to be a financial expert to make sense of investing. You just need good information and time proven strategies. That’s exactly what you will get at our Financial Workshop.

EACH MEETING WILL FOCUS ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC: • April 2rd: Foundations of Investing • April 9th: Retirement by Design • April 16th: Protecting What’s Important

Recreation Center The Rec is equipped with projector and projector screens as well as TV’s in every room! With six conference style rooms for break out sessions, the Recreation Center can hold up to 100 seated guests in its largest room.

• April 23th: Preparing Your Estate Plan Class is free, but participants must pay an $8 materials fee (one time for all classes).

ART AND MUSEUM LOVERS GROUPS Art and Museum trips are scheduled to take advantage of the best and most exciting exhibits in the Bay Area. Trip fees include transportation and excursions are planned that coincide with the museum’s FREE days as much as possible. There may be an additional charge for special exhibit entrance, which will be included in the trip cost.

FRIDAY CLUB The Friday Club continues to evolve into the “Hot Spot” in Emeryville.

The Friday Club is held every Friday, but once a month the club enjoys a special line-up. These special days have included gumbo cook-offs, outdoor picnics, Wii competitions, baking contests, casino days, and much more.

FRIDAY “NIGHT” CLUB Get out and enjoy the night life like you used to every Friday night!

Enjoy an evening of socializing with friends, playing the Wii, surfing the web, playing board games, or just “hanging out”. Free refreshments and dinner options make this a perfect place to kick off the weekend. Friday Night Club is from 5-8:30pm on the 4th Friday of each month beginning May 23rd.

FRIDAY MOVIES The center strives to provide the best entertainment and continues to offer the most current movies, award-winning series, and documentaries. Movies are shown every Friday at 1:00pm. Our projection system makes you feel like you are at the movies! While watching the movie, enjoy popcorn, a drink or other treats courtesy of the center.

Don’t like our selection of movies? Please submit your suggestions or volunteer to be one of our “Movie Critics” that select the movie you feel other members would enjoy. Call the office to volunteer for this fun position.

Trips are escorted by dependable trip escorts or staff.

Transportation is provided by our 22-passenger bus or charter buses, depending on the number of registrations.

8-TO-GO ON-DEMAND SHUTTLE SERVICE Transportation for Seniors and People with Disabilities in Emeryville and Oakland

ONLY $1 PER RIDE!

WHAT IS ‘8-TO-GO’?

The ‘8-To-Go’ is an on-demand shuttle service for everyone ages 60+, or people ages 18-59 who have a disability, living in the 94608 zip code area. Once enrolled in the program, users just place a call to set-up your travel itinerary and location, it’s that simple! Travel is limited to locations to and from the 94608 zip code area (which is all of Emeryville and portions of North and West Oakland including MacArthur BART, Kaiser, Sutter and more).

WHY SHOULD I USE ‘8-TO-GO’?

This service is intended to help seniors and people with disabilities travel within the local 94608 area. Whether it’s a trip to the senior center, grocery store, favorite restaurant, medical appointment, or religious services, ‘8-To-Go’ will provide the personalized service and attentiveness not found in other transportation services.

HOW DO I FIND MORE INFO OR SIGN-UP FOR IT? BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK-UPS The Alameda County Fire Department visits the Senior Center every first and third Friday of the month at 11:30 a.m. to check your blood pressure (and they maintain records for comparison).

HEALTH CHECK UP AND FOOT CARE A geriatric nurse practitioner from the 60+ Health Center provides bimonthly foot care, diet and medication review, and blood pressure checks at the Senior Center. Free for members.

HEALTH INSURANCE COUNSELING AND ADVOCACY PROGRAM (HICAP) Unbiased assistance and information on long term care, Medicare, supplements to Medicare and HMOS. HOME DELIVERED MEALS For home-bound older persons, 60 and over residing in Emeryville.

EMERYVILLE TRI-CITY CAFÉ HOT LUNCH PROGRAM The center offers a hot pre-packaged meal daily in our main auditorium. The meals are provided by Nutrition Solutions focusing on using low fat and sodium ingredients. This is a self serve lunch which runs Monday–Friday, 11:45am-12:15pm. Suggested Donation for the meal is $3.00 for adults 60 years and over and $5.00 if under 60. You must fill out an application form to participate in addition to the Senior Center Membership form.

Note: A few of our community/special events and senior activities do not require pre-registration. These will be noted in the activity/event description.

ON-LINE Please visit www.emeryville.org/activenet to register for almost any program! ActiveNet requires immediate payment, so make sure to have your debit/credit card or electronic check handy. Avoid wasting gas, paper, and time waiting in line…register online today!

WALK-IN Register in-person weekdays at the Recreation Center (9:00am6:00pm) or Veteran’s Memorial/Senior Center (9:00am-5:00pm) for almost every activity and event. Be sure to bring your checkbook or credit/debit card too, fees are due in full to register for a program.

If you also want to save time, please download a registration form from http://www.emeryville.org and pre-fill all of the activity information before you arrive.

FAX Pick up or download a registration form and fax it to 510-596-4339 for youth/adult activities/events or 510-652-0933 for senior activities/events. Faxed registrations require full payment by credit/debit cards only.

MAIL Cut out the registration form on the inside of the back cover, complete the registration form and sign the waiver, and mail the form with full payment to the Recreation Center, 4300 San Pablo Avenue for Youth Classes or the Senior Center, 4321 Salem Street for Adult/ Senior Classes (both address are Emeryville, CA 94608).

How do I register for infant and toddler/child development center activities?

The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) only accepts walkin registrations due to eligibility constraints. Eligibility for enrollment into ECDC programs is limited to families who live in Emeryville, work in Emeryville, or live with the 94608 zip code area of Oakland.

Be prepared to fill out an application form when you visit and sign up for the monthly tour of the programs and facility. Please call the ECDC with any questions at 510-596-4343.

Why was the activity canceled or rescheduled?

Due to low enrollment, instructor emergencies, weather conditions, or many other reasons, a class may be cancelled or rescheduled at any time. Staff attempts to limit these occurrences, but they are bound to happen. If an activity is cancelled or rescheduled, you will have the opportunity to join a rescheduled activity, join a different activity, or receive a full refund. Please allow four to six weeks for cash or check refunds to be processed. We sincerely apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

EMERYVILLE EMERYVILLECITY UPGRADES NEWS ACCESSIBILITY GRANTS FOR RENTERS & HOMEOWNERS The City of Emeryville offers Accessibility Grants to residences occupied by disabled low income owners and tenants who require accessibility modifications. The maximum grant amount is $10,000 for qualified households. The work performed includes only those items necessary to ensure accessibility to the residence. BUSINESS LICENSE CERTIFICATES AND FEES Any individual, partnership, corporation or sole proprietor who wishes to conduct, either directly or indirectly, any business within the City of Emeryville must secure a business license certificate.

The City of Emeryville ordinance states that it is unlawful for any person to commence, transact, engage in or carry on business in the City without first having obtained a valid license and paid the license fee. Organizations operating entirely for the benefit of charitable purposes and those exempt from filing information returns under 26 U.S.C. §6033 (a)(2) are exempt from the payment of business license taxes. However, such organizations must still receive and maintain a current business license and are subject to an annual renewal and statement affirming its status as a charitable organization by March 1 of each year. Public Art Is Expanding Throughout Emeryville!

SHELLMOUND STREET POWELL STREET BRIDGE PUBLIC ART PROGRAM: Four finalists, selected from 35 qualifying artist submittals, prepared Conceptual Design Proposals for review this winter. The four finalists will be on display in City Hall from November 14th to January 21st. The artist teams were challenged to increase the connectivity from Bay Street to the Emeryville Public Market and improve safety under the overpass through lighting while enhancing the artistic environment. Please come by to review the finalists’ proposals and fill out comment forms.

POETRY ON THE GO PROGRAM: In October 2014 the City, working with the current Poet Laureate and the Emeryville Transportation Management Authority, initiated monthly installation of new poems on every Emery Go Round shuttle. Riders may take the poems and a new poem will be installed on the first of the month through October 2015. 2014 PUBLIC ART PURCHASE AWARD:

BUS SHELTER TEMPORARY ART PROGRAM PHASE 3: Six artists were selected for the Phase 3 installation of the Bus Shelter Temporary Art Program to be initiated in January 2015. This program has highlighted local Emeryville residents and employees since 2012, featuring four original works from each artist for three months at four locations throughout the City. Look for the existing works by Michelle Theberge through the new year at 40th and Emery, Hollis and 62nd, Shellmound and Bay, and Powell and Commodore and the new artists through 2015 and 2016: Caitlin Coreris, Teresa Kalnoskas, Hannah Nelson, Moonyoung Sung, Will Tait, and Kazuko Watanabe.

The 9th Annual Purchase Award Program guidelines were expanded from purchases solely for City Hall to other community facilities in the City of Emeryville. Accordingly, the Public Art Committee recommended the City Council make two purchases this year, one for City Hall and one for the Police Station. The first recommendation for City Hall was for a work by Rick Ritchey “My Iconoclast ” 75” x 56”, acrylic polyurethane, 2014. This piece will cover a long vacant elevator shaft wall. The second recommendation for the Police Station was Nora Pauwels’s work “Blueprint of a Garden”, plexi plates with carborondum and cobalt blue ink, 2014. The purchases will be celebrated with a reception on December 11th.

Update on Development Proposals BREAKING RECORDS A record was set by the Building Division regarding the number of permits issued in a month. In September 2014, 128 new permits were issued, exceeding the number of permits issued in July and August combined. This past August was equally active with over 2,100 field inspections of new developments, renovations and tenant improvements, reaching an all-time high for the City.

MARKETPLACE PLANNED UNIT DEVELOPMENT The Planning Commission held two study sessions in October 2014: one for development of a 7-story, 220-unit residential building on the former United Artists Theater site; and second for a 7-story, 212-unit residential building with ground floor retail on the existing surface parking lot on the east side of Christie Avenue. The Planning Commission is expected to hold second study sessions on the two sites in early 2015.

CHRISTIE AVENUE PARK EXPANSION The City Council and the Planning Commission held study sessions for a redesign and expansion of the Christie Avenue Park at 5959 Shellmound Street in October 2014. The Planning Commission hearing on the park design is tentatively scheduled for its December 11th meeting.

SHERWIN-WILLIAMS URBAN VILLAGE A developer filed an application to redevelop the former paint factory on Sherwin Avenue in September 2014. The Planning Commission held a study session in October to review updated plans for 540 residential units and 94,600 square feet of commercial space in five new buildings.

The existing 70,000 square foot building along Horton Street will be reused for office space. The City Council will consider the proposal at a study session this December.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING AT 3706 SAN PABLO AVENUE This new City-sponsored affordable housing project at 3706 San Pablo Avenue, the former Golden Gate Lock and Key site, was presented to the Planning Commission in October 2014 for a study session. The Commissioners provided favorable feedback and the applicant has filed an application. This project will add 87 affordable units and 6,130 square feet of commercial space. With its family-friendly design it aims to become a model project for future multi-family developments in the City. The project is scheduled for a Planning Commission hearing at its January meeting.

SIDEWALK CAFES AND BIKE CORRALS More businesses in Emeryville are looking for opportunities to extend their services outdoors.

The City is considering an application from Scarlet City Espresso Bar (3960 Adeline Street) for a sidewalk café permit. This will further activate Adeline Street after the City’s approval of CommonWealth’s bike corral. This, along with the approved CommonWealth MicroPub sidewalk café and bike corral (scheduled to open in November 2014), will help to activate this stretch of Adeline Street. Housing Element of General Plan Named “Model for California” The California Housing and Community Development Department has called Emeryville’s Housing Element a model for the state, and plans to post it on their website. You can see it now at http://www.emeryville.org/housingelement. The City Council adopted it on November 2014, and the State is expected to certify it within the next few months. Its goals are to preserve existing housing, develop affordable housing, develop housing for people with special needs, provide a variety of housing types, promote equal opportunity, provide family-friendly housing, and promote environmental responsibility. Having a certified Housing Element makes the City eligible for State funding for public improvements such as parks.

Transit Study Final Report Is Now Available The final report from the Emeryville Berkeley Oakland Transit Study (EBOTS) is expected to be available online in early December 2014 and will be reviewed at the December 11, 2014 Planning Commission and the City Council meeting on January 20, 2015. The meetings will be in the Council Chambers in Old Town Hall, at 1333 Park Avenue at Hollis Street. The study is a collaboration of three cities and five transit agencies, and is funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Agency through Caltrans. City Wins Google Award as the 2014 California Digital Capital!

Google has named the City of Emeryville as the “digital capital” of California, singling it out for having the “strongest online business community” in the state.

The Google eCity Awards honor “the strongest online business community in each state”. Google worked with an independent research firm to analyze the online strength of local small businesses in cities in all 50 states and determine the leading cities in the digital economy. A variety of factors were reviewed to determine the leading cities and towns across the U.S., including the likelihood of small businesses to have a website, use a blog, promote themselves on a social network, sell goods directly from their Web pages and whether they had a mobile-friendly website. The winning cities exhibited strong engagement and potential for growth within the digital economy.

Temescal Creek Community Organic Garden

(TEMCOG)

Ground Broken for the Emeryville Center for Community Life The Emeryville Center for Community Life (ECCL) has officially broken ground as of October 16, 2014. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, State Senator Loni Hancock, and State Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, amongst many other county, school district, and city officials who helped make this project a reality. The first phase of the ECCL will be to refurbish the gymnasium and pool as well as to add a community fitness center and high school. The second phase of the ECCL features the remaining portions of the project, including middle and elementary school grade classrooms, an athletic field, administration offices, health center, and a community center. On October 25th, the Emeryville’s Community and Environmental Service Divisions hosted the Temescal Creek Community Organic Garden (TEMCOG) Grand Opening on 48th Street, Emeryville, to coincide with national Make A Difference Day. The work party included the addition of planter boxes on the outside of the garden gate, with seating included on the boxes.

These will be planted with herbs and medicinal plants available to the broader neighborhood. The ribbon cutting was conducted by the Mayor, Jack Asher, and Vice Mayor, Ruth Atkin, along with the TEMCOG Garden Coordinator, Katrine Benninger and ECOG Director Sam Foushee. Kawana Thompson, a community gardener with a plot at the site, and her band performed and food and dance was shared among the gardeners. Attendees met their neighbors, fellow plot holders, elected officials, city staff and the garden coordinators. The garden was funded by the former Emeryville Redevelopment Agency.

STAY SAFE! Holiday Tips from the Emeryville Police Department

The Emeryville Police Department would like you to know that although Emeryville is a safe city, Emeryville along with other Alameda County cities have seen an increase in thefts. Stolen items such as laptops, cellphones, IPods, I Pads, backpacks, etc. are easily transported and then are pawned, sold or bartered through flea markets, social media or other venues.

• Did you know on an average the Police Department has a response time of less than 5 minutes? If you see suspicious activity, call 911 immediately for emergencies or 596-3700 for non-emergencies.

• If you have a security camera system, provide that information immediately to the dispatcher or officer. If the theft just occurred, the dispatcher/officer will want to immediately broadcast the suspect’s description to other officers in the area in hopes of making an arrest.

Also be prepared to make a copy of the video because the officer will need a copy of the video for the police report.

• Do not leave any valuables in plain sight. Most victims believe that they can leave their valuables in plain view while they “grab a cup of coffee or something to eat.” It takes less than 30 seconds to break into a car, take the valuables and jump into a getaway car.

• Pay attention to your surroundings when walking. A majority of the victims have earplugs on or are on their cellphones talking or texting. Because they are distracted, criminals will come from behind and snatch the victim’s valuables.

• Immediately call police when you are a victim of a crime. The dispatcher will ask you questions as to WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW. “WHO (description of suspects), WHAT happened (stepped away from vehicle) WHEN (time of day), WHERE (location) WHY (stole laptop in car) and How (smashed the vehicle’s window).” The dispatcher will simultaneously relay the information to the officers who will be on the lookout.

Emeryville Citizens’ Police Academy Needs You This Spring!

The Emeryville Police Department wants you to join the next police academy starting on March 5, 2014 The Citizen’s Police Academy will acquaint citizens with law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system and provide increased understanding of the tasks police officers face in their daily work. With a better understanding between the police and citizens, it becomes easier to find realistic solutions to neighborhood problems. Everyone benefits from enhancing citizen understanding of the role and function of their police department.

The academy will meet once a week on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for 10 weeks March 5–May 7. Citizens will receive approximately twenty-six hours of classroom instruction by police officers, staff, and commanders within the police department. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to those of the regular Police Academy, with a mix of lecture format and scenario / hands-on training. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and to express their views and concerns to members of the Department. Participants will be asked to critique the various instructors as well as the overall academy experience.

The academy will cover all areas/divisions of the police department (Traffic, Criminal Investigation Services, Narcotics, Dispatch, K-9, Patrol, etc.) with a particular emphasis on the patrol as that division is the one which the public comes into contact with most often.

Many types of businesses are Green-certified, including restaurants, landscapers, printers, property managers, auto repair, cleaning services, small schools, manufacturers and wineries. Look for the Green Business Program logo on windows and on marketing materials to know if a business is Green-certified or visit http://www.greenbiz.ca.gov/ for a complete and current listing.

Join the Emeryville Community Services Department for 3 vs. 3 Micro Soccer Children will develop their soccer skills through weekly training sessions and weekly games.

Children will be assigned to a team based on age, and will receive a jersey and shin guards at the parent orientation
