We are Emerson Health Emerson has proudly served our community for more than a century. With hundreds of doctors serving over 300,000 patients across the region, we have grown to be more than a hospital you go to when you are sick. We are here to keep you well. At Emerson, our strong connection to our community and patients enables us to deliver the best possible care. We know Emerson is special. That is why we rebranded to tell our story. We are Emerson Health, and we are proud to serve our community with excellence, personalized.

As we reflect on another year, it is hard to believe that COVID is still with us. We have learned to live with it, and life continues to evolve into our new “normal.” We remain incredibly proud of our team’s unwavering dedication to providing lifesaving and compassionate care.

With great pride, we share this report on philanthropic funding to Emerson Health for fiscal year 2022. Healthcare delivery continues to be challenging as labor and supply shortages coupled with inflation continue to impact our finances. Access to local, high-quality care is more important than ever, and your support is equally essential to ensure our community’s health and wellness. Together, we are truly making a difference. Only with your financial support can we stay fiscally strong, and we are thankful to be part of such a supportive community. In the past fiscal year (October 2021 - September 2022), gifts and pledges to the Emerson Health Foundation totaled over $9.8 million, with more than $1.7 million donated to the Annual Appeal and $6.2 million to the Transforming Health Campaign. The remainder was directed toward various essential capital, endowed, and memorial funds. We also continue to be the beneficiary of some incredible planned gifts. We are so fortunate that many people include Emerson in their estate planning. With your help, we continue investing in our clinical staff, equipment, facilities, and health care system. Emerson’s high marks for quality and safety and the warmth of our compassionate patient experience are testaments to our investments. We are also committed to maintaining our independence while deepening our clinical affiliation with Mass General Brigham. This report recognizes all the individuals and organizations that contributed to Emerson Health last year. We are incredibly grateful to you and all our generous donors and volunteers, who ensure our ability to care for our region now, and for years to come.

Making a difference in our community Sandra Schelzi finds many ways to support Emerson Health Time, Talent, and Treasure. These words represent the three pillars of giving. Time and talent refer to volunteering your time and skills and treasure to financial contributions - the combination of the three allows an organization like Emerson to survive and thrive. Sandra Schelzi has given to Emerson in all three capacities year after year. Sandra is a longtime resident of Concord, and her positive impact on the community goes way back. All four of her children attended Concord schools, for which Sandra was an active member of the PTA for many years. During the kids’ school years, she also devoted her time and talents to the needs of her family’s church. But as her children grew older and with a continued desire to give back, Sandra was ready to try something new. When asked what made her think of Emerson for her next phase of giving back, Sandra said, “Honestly, I feel like I’ve had the same experience as many others. I reached a point in my life where I was ready to help my community in a way that extended beyond my own family. One night I was in a gathering of parents, and someone suggested Emerson.” Sandra decided to volunteer at one event to try it out. “I found that I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed forming new friendships, the fun of planning a festive fundraising event, and the camaraderie with other volunteers – and I felt good about the fact that our efforts were supporting the hospital.” Sandra’s volunteer efforts grew from there. She continued helping to host fundraising events, becoming a gala committee chair on several occasions. Sandra went on to share her time and talents by becoming an Emerson Health Corporator and a member of the Auxiliary of Emerson Health, running the vital golf tournament fundraiser for many years. She currently serves as a member of the Emerson Health Foundation Board.

“I feel very grateful that my family and I have enjoyed lives of generally good health, supported by Emerson. While raising my children, we were fortunate not to require Emerson’s emergency or critical care services. Recently, though, I spent a night in the ER with my grandson, Max, who was diagnosed with RSV. My daughter-in-law called, worried about Max, hoping I would meet her at Emerson. Of course, I did, and I witnessed Max receiving exceptional care. Knowing Emerson is right here has always provided an enormous sense of comfort. That comfort remains today as my children and grandchildren also live in the area.”

Endoscopy & Digestive Health: EUS

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is the latest technology used by Emerson gastroenterologists to more precisely diagnose and or treat conditions of the stomach, pancreas, duodenum and liver. It can be an important tool they use in the evaluation of patients with certain types of cancers treated at the Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital. Investments such as EUS are a reflection of our mission to improve the health of our communities by providing local access to the best possible care.
EUS and EUS-guided procedures can be used to: • Assess tissue damage due to inflammation or disease • Determine whether cancer is present or has spread to lymph nodes • Deliver therapies to a targeted region, such as a malignant tumor • Provide more-detailed information about lesions identified with other imaging technologies • Extract fluid or tissue for diagnostic testing 14

The MOZART System is a state-ofthe art, 3D technology that enables the surgeon to visualize the tumor right in the operating room, which no other technology or technique allows. The technology provides clear images of surgical margins, even through obstructions like dense tissue.
The Mozart system helps surgeons: • Reduce re-excision rates by more than 50% compared to the traditional 2D imaging systems • Lower their operating time, which lessens bleeding and anesthesia risks • Decrease the need to remove additional healthy tissue that can impact cosmetic appearance

Emerson is pleased to offer Mako SmartRobotics, a state-of-the-art robotic arm-assisted technology for hip and knee replacement surgeries. The innovative tool helps surgeons create a personalized surgical plan using a 3D model of the joint for each patient’s unique anatomy.

Greenwood Scholarship Fund Benefits Emerson Nurses!
Ann and Darryl Greenwood established the Greenwood Nurses’ Scholarship Fund. The Greenwoods had learned during the pandemic about the challenges of nursing recruitment and retention and wanted to help. “We wanted the nurses at Emerson to feel recognized and appreciated.” Our nurses benefitted right away and the scholarship allows Emerson to retain their highly qualified nursing professionals by working with them to achieve their career goals.

Meet some of the Emerson nurses who have already benefited from the scholarship. Alison Popa is currently a nurse in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit where she provides essential care, monitoring patients’ closely after surgery and ensuring their health and safety. Having already received her certificate in Perianesthesia nursing, Alison applied for the Greenwood scholarship so that she could pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. The scholarship provided Alison the financial assistance she needed to take the next step in her training. “The nursing profession is evolving regularly and the training gained through advanced degrees is becoming more necessary. After getting my certification in Perianesthesia nursing, I realized how much I love to learn. If this scholarship fund did not exist, I most likely would not have applied to move forward with my education.” – Alison Popa
Lori Deal is currently an Interventional Radiology Resource Nurse working with patients admitted for image-guided procedures. Lori applied for the scholarship so that she could complete her Master’s Degree in Nursing and matriculate into an acute care nurse practitioner position within Emerson Hospital.
