LAWS MAY NOT STOP PEOPLE SMOKING, BUT HEALTH SCARES SHOULD From May 2017 new laws came into play to deter people from smoking. Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital Consultant Cardiologist, Suneel Talwar, urges people who are not put off by smoking regulations to consider the health implications to their heart if they continue. Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the UK, the key point being preventable. The new laws will make smoking more difficult but the majority of people will continue to smoke because it’s addictive; it’s as simple as that.

At Nuffield Health Bournemouth, as well as offering state-of-the-art treatments, we provide a cardiac rehabilitation programme to educate patients on the risks their lifestyle will continue to have on their health and how far they can push their heart when it comes to exercise. For an appointment at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital’s Rapid Access Cardiology Clinic call the Nuffield team on 01202 375032. For more information nuffieldhealth.com

Smoking is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease, which can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. At our cardiology department in Bournemouth, among many other things, we provide treatment to those suffering from cardiovascular disease, which includes stenting. Advanced medical procedures are enabling people to get back on their feet quicker. In many cases patients are able to go home the next day to continue their recovery. However, patients are no longer grasping how serious their condition is and continue to smoke after their procedures.

ORCHARD BEARS FRUIT FOR QUAY In little more than a month, Quay Living has succeeded in selling no fewer than five apartments in Orchard Plaza, Poole. Quay, who also manage the building, have been bowled over by the continuing demand from both buyto-let investors and first-time buyers. Says James Buller, Sales Manager, “We are very pleased with how quickly these apartments have been snapped up. The location, just off Poole Quay, is perfect for young professionals, second-homers and retirees, because everything is on their doorstep. Since Quay owns its own premises in the building, we are also fully incentivised to keep the service charge at sensible levels and to ensure the building is well managed, and owners appreciate that”. As agent to the original developer and to successive owners, family-owned Quay has sold over 50 apartments in the block since it moved to the building in 2011, and it is proud to manage many of the 115 apartments on behalf of long-standing clients, many of whom have become personal friends. As James points out, being both block manager and sales agent ensures that no-one else knows the building like Quay, and that makes the sales process so much easier and quicker. “Many block managers take weeks to respond to requests for management packs, but we don’t think that’s fair – in fact we pride ourselves on turning them around within days.”

NAPIER Management Services Ltd is getting together with other local suppliers to provide information to residential blocks of flats regarding their obligations for health and safety. The Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations were revised in April 2015 and now apply to all construction and most maintenance projects regardless of the size, duration and nature of the work. Aileen Lacey-Payne, Director of Napier Management Services, says: “These regulations mean that routine block maintenance work will not necessarily be exempt. When we place any orders for work on our sites, we must ensure that the contractors inform us at the outset if the work is ‘Construction Work’ as defined in the Regulations.” The advice given by the HSE is as follows: “The definition of ‘maintenance’ work

has not changed. If the task in hand looks like construction work, requires construction skills and uses construction materials, it is ‘construction’ work. General maintenance of fixed plant which mainly involves mechanical adjustments, replacing parts or lubrication is unlikely to be construction work.” Aileen adds, “The HSE see managing agents and the buildings they manage for their clients as a high risk area of business as they are employing many contractors on a daily basis. Frequently there is pressure from the lessees to use low cost contractors who may like to take shortcuts to save money, but we need to ensure that all contractors on our sites are compliant to protect everyone involved; the client, the contractor and the managing agent. Napier takes its responsibilities very seriously and is ARMA Q registered. ARMA members work to high professional

BOURNEMOUTH’S NEWEST COCKTAIL BAR IS OPEN! in the area took a look around the new venue and tasted their delicious selection of the 130 cocktail recipes available at the bar, in a relaxed yet exciting atmosphere. The three Founders of the brand Steve Locke, Rhys Oldfield and Leigh Miller joined in the celebrations and unveiled the new bar. Bournemouth is the brands 33rd site across the UK, offering high quality cocktails in a relaxed, unpretentious environment, where the bar’s new look will retain an intimate feel. Each branch has its own distinct identity, the Bournemouth venue has a quirky interior, where art deco meets contemporary. People are the key to a good party, and the 3 Founders of the company appreciate this, investing £6000 into every bar tender and only employing full time members of the team, a critical factor in the company’s success. The Bournemouth branch has created 7 new full-time bar staff jobs and 2 new management roles in the Bournemouth night time economy and has invested £500,000 into a prime site in the city centre.

Said Steve Locke, Co-Founder of Be At One, “We have been wanting to secure a sight in Bournemouth for a while now. We really wanted to be a part of the vibrant busy centre, and there is no offering like Be At One. COASTAL SKINTHETICS

KITCHEN HOUSE SUPPORT LOCAL DUO IN THE ‘BARCELONA OR BUST’ RALLY

Coastal Skinthetics has seen a dramatic growth in visits to the clinic and retention of patients. This has mainly been due to word of mouth, recommendations from satisfied patient. They offer a varied range of aesthetic medical treatments including anti-wrinkle injections, lip enhancement and non-surgical face lifting (threadlift and Ultrasound lift) to name but a few. Coastal Skinthetics, due to popular demand, has now added fat reduction procedures to their treatment options. Aqualyx and Cryolypolisis are reaching new heights within the aesthetics industry and the results speak for themselves.

At Kitchen House they have decided to support Mark Webley and William Parker in the rally ‘Barcelona or Bust’. Their aim is to raise as much money as possible for Breast Cancer Care, by driving the 1,308 kilometer journey in a clappedout motor.

Dissolve stubborn fat deposits simply and effectively with Aqualyx on areas such as double chin, upper arms, waist, abdomen, moobs, saddlebags, thighs and knees. How does aqualyx work? The active substance found Aqualyx locks onto the fat cell wall making it unstable enough to begin releasing the fatty acid store within. The residue is removed by the body defences and the fatty acids metabolised and converted into energy. To find out more, you can contact Coastal Skinthetics direct on 0800 6124468 or 07828 617807 info@coastalskinthetics.com www.coastalskinthetics.co.uk

Mark and William are great competitors with a passion for all high-speed thrills. They have both had relations who have recently suffered from cancer, so they wanted to support those who have been affected.

Bordeaux and Andorra, before finally arriving in Barcelona. Kitchen House want to help them raise money for those coping with treatment and living with this disease, so any donation, no matter how big or small, would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause then please contact the office at Kitchen House on 01202 546546 or head to their Just Giving Page: www.justgiving. com/fundraising/lasttangoinbarcelona

The driving challenge will be an experience for them whatever happens. Having bought their £500 Peugeot 307 convertible, dubbed ‘Tango’, they are now preparing for the challenge. Though not exactly physical, the race will unboundedly provide many challenges along the way. The three-day challenge will begin on 7th September with ‘Bust Rallies’, which will take them via

FLOODMATE – THE ADVANCED SOLUTION TO SURFACE WATER FLOODING Two Business men Andy Pedrick and Gino Abate have created a revolutionary product – an emergency flood barrier that takes only 30mins to install, and can be used to protect against expensive flood damage for a number of different applications. This state-of-the-art product is quick and easy to install, and can be used just about anywhere, it is suitable for front doors, back doors, garages, sheds, gates, driveways, businesses or anywhere else that is vulnerable. With global climate change, flooding is becoming more frequent and less predictable and in many areas there is not the infrastructure for permanent flood prevention. In 2009, local business owner Andy Pedrick was concerned for the victims of the floods, how their personal life was severely disrupted and their personal belongings were destroyed or

lost as a result of low-level surface water flooding. Thinking about how this could be avoided without people committing large sums of money and without having hinges and fittings permanently attached to buildings, he devised Floodmate. He began the design and development of the idea by working with Gino Abate, a professional Product Designer from Bournemouth who has been using his creative thinking to develop products for many years. With this knowledge of flood damage and engineering experience they created Floodmate.

SPIDERMAN COME TO BOURNEMOUTH A street art project recently took place at pier approach in Bournemouth. It was a successful event, packed with lots of parents with their kids dressed up in superhero outfits. The project, commissioned by Ambassadeur Art Gallery in Bournemouth, pulled together resident artists from the gallery, Iain Alexander and Dairo Vargas as well as Bournemouth’s infamous street artist, Miroslav Lucan. Students from the Arts University Bournemouth also helped create this giant painting which took a total of three days to complete after several months of planning. The super-sized superhero was unveiled to the public by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth who shook hands with Spiderman as he arrived on the zip wire to finish the painting with a final flourish of the paintbrush.

Said Andy Pedrick, Inventor and CoDirector of Floodmate, “We wanted to create a ground-breaking product that is quick and easy to use, affordable and suitable for all types of businesses and homes in the result of a flash flood”. For more information floodmate.co.uk

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

A CHAT WITH KITCHEN HOUSE...

KITCHENS ON TREND

If home is where the heart is, the heart is where the kitchen is More and more people are transforming their homes into all-encompassing entertainment zones – gorgeous open-plan spaces perfect for get-togethers. With the single biggest family gettogether on the horizon (Christmas) it’s time to get serious about remodelling the heart of the home. We spoke with design-expert ‘Gary Keene’, to find out what’s hot in kitchens.

The Old and The New The mixing of textures and materials is prevalent throughout contemporary homes now. Tired of a uniformed approach, people are looking to embrace the new whilst still paying homage to more traditional, characterful design. Picture handpainted cabinets, mixed with highly polished stone, a rustic lumber breakfast bar, made complete with chrome fixtures and modern amenities… it’s about creating interest. Whilst kitchens are primarily a functional space, there’s no need for them to look so and with the advanced guard technology that is on the market, there’s no need to play it safe – the only limit is the imagination of your designer, and at Kitchen House that isn’t a problem.

To the Surface For the last fifteen years granite has become the goto for modern worktops, but like all trends, change is coming. The latest surface obsession is ‘Quartz’; granite’s arguably superior sibling. Quartz comes in an incredibly broad range of colours (including large scale, single colour slabs for islands) patterns and effects, making application easier and the options practically limitless. In terms of style Kitchen House advocates dense, solid stone and the thicker the depth the better, for an opulent look. “The highlypolished finish will really offset competing matte finishes, so don’t be afraid of mixing it up”, says Gary. Quartz, unlike granite, is non-porous. Where the daily dirt, grime and water can’t penetrate the stone, you can rely on it’s durability and minimal to no upkeep.

Accent Wood

Put The Cool In Cool

Gone are the all-oak kitchens, in-fact gone are most of the all-wood sculleries. Wood is very much an accent material now, rather than a dominant, but it definitely still has its place in the modern kitchen. Wood has a beautiful organic look, particularly the un-polished ‘shabby-chic’ styles. A lot of modern design can be quite cold and insensitive, but by incorporate sporadic elements of wood, you lift the overall feel, creating a more characterful and attention-grabbing look. Driftwood and olive wood are two beautiful examples of this.

Refrigeration is the new status symbol. We’ve always been inspired by those iconic double door units, complete with water filtration and all the bells and whistles, but now this is much more than inspiration and rather more an abnormal game of ‘how big is your fridge’. “There’s almost no way these fridges could be filled by a domestic home, but people love them”, says Gary. The latest lines even have cameras fitted, so you can see exactly what is in stock the next time you go food-shopping – what a time to be alive!

Tucked Away

Meet The Experts

When it comes to layout, you’ll rarely, if ever, see a stand-alone unit. Everything (including appliances) is tucked away. The idea is to craft a sleek, seamless look – creating or enhancing the grandeur of a space. Why we’re all labouring under the false pretence that we don’t actually have any possessions, we’ll never know, but there’s no denying that it is a running theme. Even handles are subject to the boot, with more and more ‘push to open’ doors coming in, furthering the uninterrupted streamline design. Designers have to be incredibly clever with storage too, utilising every nook and cranny as potential stowage.

As the ‘designers and suppliers of the WOW factor’, Kitchen House are one of the leading kitchen specialists in the South. With an incredibly broad portfolio, Kitchen House handles everything from fixed-budget, to large-scale designer kitchens and with over 30 years experience you can rely on their skilful hands and impeccable reputation. As an independent business Kitchen House offer flexibility and diligence well beyond the high-street chains, leaving you with a quality kitchen unlike any other. Find Gary and his talented team at their stunning showroom on ‘Castle Lane’, just beyond the ‘Castle Point’ shopping centre.

Automation We are a nation of the now, which is why automation is becoming more and more prevalent in most aspects of interior design – especially within kitchens. Appliance manufactures are focusing their efforts on computerising their products, so that you can operate your kitchen at the swipe of a phone or tablet. Kitchen House is currently stocking automated coffee machines (and ovens), complete with built in WIFI, so you can ask your guests without leaving the dining table. Using the 3D graphics on the iPad they can choose exactly how they would like their coffee, walk to the machine and it will be there. It’s a little something known as ‘Home Connect’. “Refrigeration is the new status symbol”

TALKING BUSINESS

YOU WORKED HARD FOR YOUR SECOND HOME SO WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU RENT IT OUT? When you’re building a business or a career there are milestones of achievement- turning over £1m, heading the department, employing 10 people and often what was an ambitious and hard fought for goal with hindsight seems like a small first step. £1m turnover gets to £10m, you make partner, set up your own practice or employ 100 people. The rewards for success can also follow a similar path- holidays go from 2 week packages to high end cruises, battered estate cars become sleek new Range Rovers and sailing dinghies morph into Sunseekers. Whether you are a self improvement fanatic or just a practical business person who hates that mumbo jumbo it’s an indisputable fact that success comes from setting goals and visualising their achievementimagine being welcomed aboard that cruise liner or announcing to the staff that you’ve gone through £10m turnover and that image puts your mind in the right place and makes it more likely to happen. What we often don’t realise until it’s too late is that all the fun is in the challenge and the journey, often when you reach the goal and buy the reward it’s a bit of an anticlimax and this can be particularly true when you finally sell the business or retire early with the big lump sum. One of my most memorable meetings was with a client who had sold his business for many millions talking about his new life: ‘When being on holiday is your job It’s a rubbish job!’

So it is that I frequently find myself sitting down with owners of fabulous second homes in Sandbanks or other locations. They often own them outright, they don’t need to rent them out and the yield looks pretty weak compared to the big capital investment so why are they even talking to me? It turns out for quite a few very good reasons so let’s take a look at some of them: 1. You still know the value of money We’ve all been there, doesn’t matter what you can afford, it still hurts when someone quotes £400 to trim a hedge or a small bottle of mineral water is £6.50 from the minibar. There’s a long string of people queuing up to charge you for something to do with your second home and running it as a business will provide income to cover expenses, make them tax deductible and crucially produce a change in the mindset of suppliers who will understand they need to be competitive. 2. Stop paying council tax! A qualifying holiday let will be business rated and if it’s your only one you’ll get small business rate relief at 100% and pay nothing. There are conditions to meet but they are not particularly onerous, more info below. 3. Tax relief on pretty much everything Capital allowance rules let you claim full tax relief on purchases up to £200,000 a year and if you don’t have the income to claim against it’s carried forward indefinitely until you do so that fantastic kitchen or designer sofa just got much cheaper.

4. Capital gains tax reduction This can be worth many times more than the rent, when you sell that second home you’ll pay just 10% tax on the gain instead of the usual 28% 5. Rollover relief When you sell a furnished holiday let and buy another the gain can be ‘rolled over’ into the new property so the tax is not payable at that point provided the new property is of equal or greater value. Note that capital gains tax does not apply after death so if you never sell the property you never pay the tax.

up to 37 to use for yourself which is probably more than you use anyway. There is no requirement for the lets to be at any particular time so you can have all the school holidays yourself if you want. Everybody’s situation is slightly different and there’s often companies, trusts or other complications so you should, of course, talk to a suitably qualified person about your particular circumstances but the opportunity is there to get a lot more out of your investment and enjoy it more too.

6. Retrospective Benefit- Are You Sitting On A Gain? This is a really big one- in certain circumstances operating as a holiday let for at least a full tax year the entire gain may qualify for entrepreneurs relief even if the place has been a second home for a long period. 7. Services for you and your private guests If you are welcoming select guests it’ll be essential to have a really good management team in place delivering a premium service which of course means they will be there for you and your private guests toofreshly squeezed juice in the fridge? Champagne on ice? Whatever you need will be managed and you’re guaranteed a hassle free arrival. Qualification To get these benefits you have to be available to let for about 7 months of the year but you only need to actually let for 15 weeks leaving you with

ASK THE INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERT...

FIVE SIMPLE TRICKS FOR THE HOME

ASK THE EXPERT ABOUT...

Contacting Your Remover

Katie Thomas, Design Director, KTM Design I provide interior and spatial design services to residential and commercial clients across the UK, but one thing every client has in common is their aim to maximise the value of their home or commercial space. This often means financial value, but it can also be the value and benefits that their new, intelligently designed space brings to their lifestyle, wellbeing and happiness. As everyone wants their home to reach its full potential, I have decided to share five of my favourite simple interior design tips and tricks for the home: 1. Prioritising investment pieces Allow your antiques and unique finds to take centre stage in your home. You’ll want to enjoy them and have them on display, but sometimes it can be tricky to decide on the perfect location. Why not add some interest to utilitarian spaces like the bathroom by showcasing them here. 2. Using the correct furniture to add height You can easily fake height with low-slung furniture, making the room seem taller. Create strong vertical lines to enhance the sense of space and stay away from horizontals. Large mirrors are a timeless way to add scale to the room. 3. If you don’t know where to start, start with the colour scheme The first step to take in a complete makeover is deciding on a basic colour palette for the whole house, and then take this from room to room. The beauty is how different it plays itself out in different rooms. 4. Neutral décor isn’t boring Neutral décor can be interesting and exciting, as long as you include a variety of textures and materials - linen, raw silk, taffeta, cotton velvet, distressed velvet. Use contrasting materials that play with the light differently, such as matte sheens absorbing the light and lustrous sheens reflecting it.

Steve Webber, Director of Maidmans Moving & Storage Steve offers the following advice about when to contact your remover. Steve says: “When contacting a removal company, you need to think about why you are contacting them at that time. It may be to obtain an initial quotation to help you calculate your moving costs. You may also want information on storing items during the move, or information about packing services.” “Every removal company will be happy to pop out and give you some idea of the overall budget for your house move. This will be a free quotation and you need not feel an obligation to use the company.” “If you are looking for a firm fixed quotation, the remover will send around an experienced surveyor to your home to assess exactly what you will be taking with you, what needs putting into temporary storage and if any items will need specialist dismantling and re-assembling at your new home. Steve says: “Contacting your removal company for a local move about a month in advance is ideal and will give you time to

5. Use your ceiling to brighten things up Paint the ceiling a slightly paler version of the walls, as this makes the room seem brighter, even if there isn’t much natural daylight. This is particularly useful in kitchens with floor-to-ceiling cabinets or extra tall wall units where the space can feel dark. It is a fail-safe way to trick the eye. If you are thinking about making changes to your home or commercial space in the upcoming months, do get in touch. For more information or to book your complimentary design consultation, please call 01202 069499 or email info@ktmdesign.co.uk

have the removal quotation sent to your home, to discuss any issues and to plan for the move date. When moving to Europe or further you should make contact earlier to ensure all logistics and time scales are considered” For further information or to book a free visit and quote call

LAND & PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT

AJ DEVELOPMENTS INTRODUCING STROLLERS REACH, the highly anticipated and talked about premier development on Barton Common Road.

career. This particular farm was later purchased by Barton-On-Sea Golf Club, and houses Stroller in his final resting place.

With demolition nearly complete, the construction of just 8 bespoke apartments is underway. These homes will be completed to the highest specification and finish; this married with the enviable views they’ll boast is already making these apartments sought after, with current enquiries being taken.

These homes which are in walking distance of several bars and restaurants situated along the coastal road running between Barton and New Milton, will be ready for occupation Summer 2018.

Through a gated entrance, this development comprises a mix of sizeable, two and three bedroom apartments, with spacious living accommodation, balconies, an internal elevator, private parking and landscaped garden areas. The Development Name ‘Strollers Reach’ has been derived from the famous pony Stroller, who was the first and only, Olympic medal-winning, Show Jumping Pony, and is now laid to rest at the Barton-On-Sea Golf Club which this prestigious development overlooks. Stroller, a Bay Gelding standing at 14.1h.h, was raised on a local farm and went on to have an explosive 15 year championship 64

TALKING BUSINESS

CORBIN & CO ESTATE AGENTS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF ANOTHER HIGH STREET OFFICE Located in Wimborne Road, Northbourne, opposite the popular Toby Carvery. The opening of this office is a result of the achievements of our team and their dedication, passion and commitment to Corbin & Co clients, old and new. Alison Mitchell, Sales Director, an estate agent with many years’ experience is looking forward to welcoming vendors to benefit from the new innovative marketing, bringing more attention to their properties and achieving faster sales at maximum prices. “We are continuing to build on our success, both locally and further afield, and will now be in the position to cover all types of property in West Parley, Northbourne and Muscliff. We aren’t limited to our office location. Our low Sole Agency fee is to celebrate opening our Northbourne office. We have recognized that the world is changing and to encompass this our marketing is embracing this change to benefit our clients. We will give vendors their own Property Website to share on social media with their friends and family, reaching a larger audience than Rightmove alone. This is an exciting future for estate agency and we are the only agent offering this service.” Debbie Corbin, Owner. “Corbin & Co opened in 2008 in a very difficult market and with hard work, tenacity and delivering an exceptional customerfocused service, we are now in a position to build on our success and expand the business. Our two offices will make us more accessible to our clients,

both on the phone and face-to-face and allows us to give the personal service we are known for. One of the criticisms of the ‘online agents is that they are difficult to communicate with, and don’t have the resources required to progress sales and keep chains together. One of our strengths is our people their knowledge, experience and values it may sound cliché but we do really care about what we do and get a real buzz out of seeing our clients move forward with their lives but don’t take my word for this see our Google Review/Face Book Reviews or visit our website to hear what our clients are saying about Corbin & Co. Lisa Pearce Letting Manager - I have been managing the lettings arm of Corbin & Co for four years and in that time, we have grown considerably due to recommendations from our existing Landlords. I am looking forward to the new office opening and the opportunity of meeting new Landlords who may have not considered Corbin & Co before. We understand that Landlords want a tenant who pays the rent on time and who looks after the property or in a nut shell they want PEACE OF MIND. In the past I have been both a Landlord and a Tenant, which gives me great understanding of what both parties expect from a Letting Agent. Our philosophy is built on building and maintaining great relationships with the emphasis on communication. I am excited about the future and hope our lettings business continues to go from strength to strength.

Diary of Award Winning Sales and Letting Agent Move On Sharon Canning

HELPING INVESTORS I love what I do. I love helping people find homes to live in (whether that be renting or buying) and I love helping investors get the best on their investments. This week a lovely couple came into the office with a hand full of properties they had been to look at and wanted to know which of them in our opinion would achieve the best rental prices and would attract good quality people. We sat down with a lovely cup of coffee as the heavens decided to open outside and pour down with rain, they were more than pleased to have entered the office prior to the downfall and certainly not in a hurry to leave, however that was okay, as anyone purchasing a buy to let property must do their due diligence and ensure they have all the facts presented to them, which may not have been presented in full by the selling agent (no offence to sales agents out there). One of the first things I noticed was the sales agent had written on the sales details the monthly rental price that could be achieved, this was very top heavy and although in certain market conditions this could be reached, it was not guaranteed, so we looked at realistic figures that will ensure their outgoings were covered, meaning anything above was a bonus, based on not only Move On trading for over 11 years but my own 26 years of experience within the industry throughout Poole and Bournemouth 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

We are able to provide real data on rental prices. Advise on good areas and not so good areas How long the average tenant rents for What type of tenants for certain properties and areas. Adding in void periods Legal costs such as Gas Safety certificates, Electrical, Legionella, smoke alarms, co Alarms etc 7. Buildings and contents insurance. 8. Block management fees if a flat or leasehold property. With all the facts and likely expenses, the investors could realise the true return on their money, which automatically cut out two of the properties they had. With the remaining four properties, we simply looked at the areas that would not only attract good quality tenants now, but would also attract a buyer if they need to or wanted to sell in the future. We looked out of the window and with true English style, the rain had stopped and the sun was beaming and the investors went off to put in their offer. If you are thinking of purchasing a Buy to Let property, come and have a cup of coffee and no obligation chat. Always happy to help. Have a good week! Sharon If you are looking to, rent, buy, sell or invest, then choose Move On because it what we like to do best. DON’T MISS OUR ADVERT ON PAGE 69. If you would like a friendly, no obligation chat regarding any property matter, then please Email sharon@moveon.biz or telephone 01202 711169. Don’t forget to tune into The Business Show on Hope FM 90.1and listen to Sharon produce and present two hours of live and up to date property industry news on the first Wednesday of each month. 108

IS OSLO EUROPE’S GREENEST CAPITAL? Here’s how to have an eco weekend break Ease your environmental conscience with a short trip to Norway’s ecofriendly capital, says Sarah Marshall. Surrounded by fjords, forests and fields, Oslo is an urban metropolis wrapped in nature. The Green Party are in power as part of a local coalition government, pushing through initiatives such as a car-free city centre, improvements in cycle highways and public buses powered by biofuel - and it’s even been named Green Capital of the World for 2019. If you’re on a mission to go green in Norway’s eco Eden, these are the places you should check out... Grow grains, bake bread and be happy WHERE: Loseter City Farm and Bakehouse Straining their iron necks far beyond the steel skyline, a chain of cranes is a reminder of the building work BELOW: Olso’s opera house in the Bjorvika bay area, currently under regeneration (Photo credit: PA Photo/Renato Granieri)

underway in Oslo’s Bjorvika bay area. A new Munch museum, opera house and library are all on the cards for 2020. But amidst the tangle of disused train tracks and dual carriageways is a scene more idyllic than industrial, with BMWs and Audis occupying the same vista as a horse and cart. Oslo’s urban farm sits below two iconic concrete towers on the edge of the city, where roads are superseded by swathes of pine forest. As part of the Future Farmers art project helmed by American Amy Franceschini, 100 growing boxes were given to the community (there were 4,000 applicants) and a city farmer was employed to help people learn how to grow (he’s on site every Wednesday). “Growing and empathy with nature can help the decision-making process,” says project organiser Anne Beate Hovind. TRAVEL

Even the distance travelled by ingredients is carefully monitored; 80% of the menu is sourced from within an hour of Oslo. As a result, the six or ten course tasting menu (from £88/950 NOK-£135/1450 NOK) is a tour of Norway’s finest farms; dishes might include scallops from the island of Froya, or skrei, a spawning cod swimming in the waters around Lofoten. Taking the nose to tail approach one step further, chef Mikael Svensson’s menu makes use of everything available in the larder - so if a pork shoulder slow-cooked for 36 hours appears as a main meat dish, don’t be surprised to taste pig lard buttered on sides of bread. Tongues, brains, stems and stalks all have their place, making Kontrast even more innovative than Oslo’s high-flying crop of forwardthinking restaurants. If you’re teetotal, or want a night off the sauce, try the juice flight of cold teas, fruits and herb infusions. A Bakehouse designed to resemble the hull of a Viking ship has rescued ancient grains, providing a space for community baking sessions, and there are plans to introduce a pig and hens - one day. For more information, go to www. loseter.no/en Fine dine without any waste WHERE: Restaurant Kontrast No-one likes waste, especially at the dinner table. Sweat about the state of our oceans WHERE: SALT Drying codfish on large triangular racks known as hjell has a long tradition in coastal areas of Norway. Now the pyramid structures have settled in Bjorvika, where the mouth of the Akerselva and Alna rivers meet the Oslofjord. Conceived to honour the ocean’s vast resources, the project originally had a home in Arctic island Sandhornoya, but until 2018 it will stay put in the capital. During the day, sauna worshippers can sweat in the main Arena area, sitting on pews stacked to the sky while listening to whale hymns floating through speakers (tickets £18.50/200 NOK). Cool off in water barrels immediately outside. The whole experience is low-fi - there are no lockers, changing rooms are communal and you’ll need to bring your own towel (only a few are available to rent) - but the hands-on, inclusive approach is charming. Grab a drink in the front-of-house bar (from a glass, not plastic) and pay attention to debates, installations and events intended to highlight the effects of climate change and pollution on the Norwegian coastline. A sound recording inspired by Svalbard’s endangered seed bank is currently playing overnight (11pm-11am) in the open-air Arctic Pyramid (free entry). Visit www.salted.no

Sleep easy with a sustainable host WHERE: Scandic Vulkan hotel Hotels by their very nature aren’t especially eco-friendly - all those showers, daily sheet changes and half-used, discarded miniature toiletries. The Scandic Vulkan hotel though, is attempting to make commendable amends by employing green gadgetry, such as solar cells and running on geothermal energy. This was the first hotel in Norway to be given an official Class A energy rating, meaning it uses resources extremely efficiently. Each of the 149 rooms features a recycling bin for plastics and paper, and bicycles can be borrowed for free to explore the local area. Rooms from £93 (1000 NOK) per night with breakfast. STAYCATION

PARADISE AT HOME In an effort to seek some R&R, I sat down with my significant other to discuss the possibility of a holiday. Like most, we have put in the graft, working day and night to pay for all of life’s little joys; the mortgage, bills, my princess of a dog’s specific dietary needs…we, like many, were in need of a break. So one night we sat together and explored website after website, each suggesting ideas and quickly dismissing them. Arguments breaking out over flight durations, destinations and how this whole holiday finding process was actually a reflection of a deep routed inability to commit (sorry, it got personal). The point is, sometimes booking a relaxing escape abroad is one of the most stressful experiences. Then it occurred to me, why am I so desperate to escape a part of the world that tons of holidaymakers would die to visit? Our neighbouring county Cornwall is widely regarding as one of the most beautiful parts of the country, offering breathtaking views, art, renowned

culinary haunts and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches – light bulb alert. It hit me, why don’t we swap our vacay, for a staycay? So, we decided to turn to the awesome team at ‘Beachspoke’ – luxury holiday home specialists – who helped us snag a stunning rental, located in the charming Cornish village of ‘Mousehole’. We arrived in Cornwall, a pinch weary from our 4-hour car journey, which by all standards was far more pleasurable (and scenic) than the less than alluring sight of the M3 on route to Gatwick. After a quick pit stop in Penzanse, where we stocked up on all the essentials – aka pasties, clotted cream and cider – we headed for our crashpad in Mousehole. After a blazing trail through winding country roads and narrow village streets we had arrived. We pulled up in the world’s most scenic car park, adjacent to the twinkling waterfront and headed towards the ‘Harbour Moon’ cottage.

Prior to our visit Olivia (our staycation guru/Beachspoke tour guide) had given us the code to a tiny security box that would unlock the key to the door. We guided the key into the lock and pushed open the door – deep breath – and WOW.

116

I stepped down into the kitchen come sitting room. Every inch of the space was adorned with style. The matte marble-esque worktops with chrome trimmings, the exposed stonewall, the driftwood sculptures; everything was gorgeous. Our exploration was heightened as we climbed the nautical rope-aided stairwell, only to discover the stunning boudoir above. We crept in, taking in every nook and cranny. To the left, bronze-flecked tiles flowed seemly from floor to wall, creating a contemporary wet-room, complete with walk in shower and a copper basin. White fluffy robes hung up tied with a bow, set the tone for what was to be a truly lavish layover. We continued into the room our excitement growing. A grand bed took pride and place centralised in the latter part of the room, it’s headboard the divide between bathroom and bedroom. I looked up to discover fishing nets woven between the

STAYCATION

Another day of adventure concluded and we began our usual holiday ritual of changing for the evening affair. Tonight we decided to visit the famous ‘2 Fore Street’. Owner and operator Joe (who actually took our booking that morning) served some of the best food I have ever had. The quality, flavour and evident passion spoke through the food and the service from their fantastic team heightening an already incredible experience. We returned to our pad for the last time. In an effort to savour as much of this wonderful property as we could, we perched in the living room enjoying the fresh scones and raspberry conserve we had picked up earlier that day. As our eyes grew heavy we decided to tuck ourselves into our opulent marshmallow bed once more. What a trip. Beachspoke have opened my eyes to a new kind of travel accommodation and a truly luxurious experience, all only hours away. Our property, ‘Harbour Moon’, is one of eight luxury properties in and around Cornwall, Devon and Cotswold that Beachspoke manage. white beams with a large copper pendant light suspended over the divan. A beam of light crept over the bed, inviting us to the furthest part of the room. I went to open the curtains before being distracted by the glass floor below me that looked out onto the living space below. The natural light coming from the open window below reminded me of the magnificence of seaside living. Finally I crept towards the rustic café-style shutters and pulled them apart, revealing the picturesque harbour view that had been hiding behind it. It was breathtaking. Excited to explore the town we threw on some fresh clothes and hit up the local haunts. Based on the recommendations in our Harbour Moon guidebook, we decided to pay a visit to the ‘Old Coastguard’, a popular restaurant on the cliff top overlooking the sea. To get to the restaurant, we strolled along the rockery and climbed a stone stairwell that disclosed a beautiful garden. We crept in through the double doors and snagged a table. The meal was delicious, complete with local gins and fresh seafood. Feeling full and fully inebriated we

made our way back to the cottage to enjoy our first night in that enormous bed – lights out. We awoke in the sun-filled room ready for a day of exploration, though the feeling of duck-feather pillows and a sumptuous mattress made it hard to actually leave. Adam – my partner whom I mentioned in the beginning – true to his heroic nature, gathered breakfast supplies (from the quaint local post office I might add). I tore myself away from bed and headed to the first place anyone on holiday goes: the fridge. I opened the door only to reveal a bottle of sparkling English wine, a half pint of milk and some eggs. What a lovely touch. I was at a beverage related crossroads; I had planned to assemble a coffee from the very lovely looking Nepresso machine, but now I had discovered the sparkling wine? Like anyone else in my position I weighed up the options and decided that having both was the only way forward. Gathering my drinks I headed for the bathroom. A sip, disrobe and another sip later, I was enjoying the marvellous sensation of a rainfall shower. I thought; if this is how the other half live, I want to trade sides.

INTO THE

BLUE

3 Decor looks to float your boat Set sail into summer with fresh schemes inspired by stark skies and seaside settings. Gabrielle Fagan sources the season’s key looks. You can’t beat the blues - instead you should embrace them this year, as they’re taking the interiors world by storm. Be inspired by three settings - coastal, Moroccan, and ocean style - featuring bright blue sky shades through to dramatic deep indigo and moody sea greens. Simply choose a theme, and create the look with our top finds...

Classic Coastal “This year, there’s a big focus on blues of all shades, and there’s no easier way to use them than by creating coastal style. Its enduring popularity is unsurprising, because it’s timeless, informal and so easy to live with,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “It’s all about recreating that peaceful, contented feeling that comes from a trip to the coast, within the home,” adds Alex. “Texture can play a key part and realistic faux-effect driftwood, wood beam or pebble-effect wallpapers are perfect for a beach hut backdrop. Stripes are a traditional choice for conjuring a crisp, fresh seaside vibe.” “Choose from a palette of cool blues and sandy neutrals to evoke hazy summer days by the sea, and build on

the look with natural materials and furniture - distressed or weathered pieces will give a ‘lived in’ feel,” suggests Alex. “Another fun way of introducing this style is by using wallpaper and accessories with nautical motifs, such as shells, anchors, lighthouses or vintage maps.”

Catch The Wave “For a gentle, tranquil interpretation of shore style, replicate the colours of the ocean with its harmonious everchanging blend of blue, green and teal shades,” suggests Rebecca Snowden, interior style advisor, Furniture Choice. “This palette will work well with natural materials - grained woods and stone - and can be dressed up or down to suit the mood,” adds Rebecca. “This look is a world away from the cheery beach-hut style, and more akin to a sanctuary on a far-flung shore. “Layer pale, misty shades of blue, green and grey to give a tonal effect, and avoid anything too arresting, which will jolt the eye,” Rebecca says. “Soft, floaty fabrics - so characteristic of sun-bleached and sun-drenched settings - would also work well. “Dress a bed with linen and cotton throws and accessorise with glass and ceramics in blues and greens, and beachcomber items such as shells and driftwood.” RIGHT: The Arabesque Cobalt wallpaper, £195 per roll; Lino Modules sofa upholstered in Reticello Cobalt fabric, £4,845; cushions (left to right) Cellini Cobalt cushion, £100; Iridato Sky cushion, £72; Brera Lino Marine cushion, £60, and Murrine Delft cushion, £66, all available from Designers Guild

Moroccan Magic “Moroccan style can be incredibly versatile,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at curtain and blinds specialists, Hillarys. “The current trend for all things geometric inspired by ikat and batik designs, combined with the classic pairing of intensely-hued blue and white, is Moroccan style made easy. “It draws on a melting pot of influences,” Susan adds. “From a bohemian eclectic vibe that mixes rich Moorish colours with layers of vibrant pattern, through to calm minimalism, which blends a palette of cool white with accents of polished silver and bleached wood. “It’s not about going overboard. Instead, keep the backdrop simple with whitewashed walls and floorboards for an authentic, summery feel,” advises Sarah. “Bring in patterned textiles in bold indigo blue and white, such as curtains or rugs, to give a space an instant lift, and accessorise with lanterns, tray tables, and floor cushions for an Eastern feel.” By Gabrielle Fagan, Press Association Pictures credit: PA Photo/Handout

LED LIGHTING: A BRIGHT IDEA! A few answers to some popular misconceptions about LED Lighting.

1. “LEDs are that horrible ghostly blue-white colour.” A lot of the early LED lamps were initially produced in cool white, as this colour gave the highest Lumen output and manufacturers were desperate to compete with the brightness of conventional bulbs. The technology

GRANITE & QUARTZ WORKTOPS

has moved on a lot since then, way beyond the brightness of the old technology. Lamps are now available in a range of colours, including the ever-popular ‘warm white’, which gives your room that cosy glow. 2. “LED lamps run cold” Very wrong: the high power LEDs used in today’s lamps run very hot and require a heatsink bonded, to them to ensure that they do not overheat. This is usually in the form of a finned aluminium object designed to loose heat to the atmosphere as quickly as it can. One of the few things that damage LEDs is high temperature. The LEDs are designed to run up to a maximum of around 70 degrees (Celsius). A general rule of thumb is if you can hold it comfortably without the lamp burning you, then it will be running at the correct temperature, if you cannot then there is probably something wrong.

FREE OLD WORKTOP

3. “LEDs aren’t bright enough” It is quite normal now for the latest LEDs to have efficacies of 120lumens/ watt, which is way beyond any of the other lighting technologies, such as ‘Tungsten’, which works at around 15 lumens/watt and halogens around 20. This is what gives them their great energy saving properties.

REMOVAL

Enabling you to get the same light output, for a fifth of the energy being used. We now have 50mm downlights that are way brighter than their

old halogen counterparts and in a choice of colour saturation.

4. “You can’t dim LEDs”

(Normal charge £300)

Dimmers for old lamps were normally rated at 60-400W to allow for circuits of 1-6 lamps. All a tad technical, but the point is just how incredible LEDs are now. With similar LED lamps now at just 5W, if you were to put 6 on one circuit with a total load of 30W, you would still be way below the minimum threshold of the old dimmer. The dimmer manufacturers were a little slow at first to respond to the LED lamp market (maybe they thought it would never catch on!). Now they really have their act together and all of the top brands such as Hamilton, MK, Danlers, Varilight, etc… have dimmers specifically designed for low load LED circuits and are rated at 1-100W, so it will dim just one LED lamp on its own, should you wish. You may need to specify that you require a dimmable lamp when purchasing, as not all of them are and they are generally more expensive as they require extra electronic circuitry inside to do the dimming. The better quality LED lamps dim smoothly down to zero.

Sergio Quartz

5. (Last one, and my old favourite) “They are only 2 quid on e-Bay!” Like any product or service, there will always be cheaper alternatives – but sometimes when something seems too good to be true, it’s normally more horrific than you could have anticipated. The same goes

We’ve had some shockers brought in here and prior to Led-Zip we had also bought some ourselves, based on misleading information. We test

for cheaper LED alternatives.

A35

everything that we sell and keep all of our warranties here in the UK, with reputed suppliers. Unlike other lamps, LEDs come with a guarantee and don’t be afraid to use it if you get a premature failure. We offer like for like replacement, or money back straight away over the counter and then we take it up with the manufacturer on your behalf.

THE NEW FOREST SHOW Reformed

Plastics

had

another

fantastic year attending the The New Forest and Hampshire County Show at the end of July. The show is always a highlight of the year giving them a great opportunity to introduce the products to new clients whilst also seeing some familiar faces of existing clients visiting the stand. Even though the weather was not on their side the people who visited the stand certainly were, with some saying they had come to the show specifically to meet Reformed Plastics after seeing the products online. David comments, “We would like to say a big thank you to all who attended and visited our stall, we had a great week making pending sales and new contacts, with particular interest in our new Adirondack chairs and traditional Parley Swing. We loved interacting with the hundreds of people that came to see us and are already looking forward to next year.”

MADE IN DORSET When you get involved with Reformed Plastics you can rest assured that your new furniture has been designed and made right here in Dorset. Owners David and Martyn are passionate about this USP. GO GREEN Everything that Reformed Plastics produce is made from 100% recycled plastic. It’s a unique process to this portion of the country. Discharged plastics are melted and remoulded to make faux timber planks, which are then transformed into all kinds of outdoor furniture. CAN YOU SAVE YOUR GARDEN AFTER YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY? Even your grass, plants and flowers have the post-holiday blues Returned from holiday to find bedraggled plants, an overgrown lawn, herbs and flowers which have run to seed and a glut of crops you couldn’t give away?

Cut back and feed container plants Container plants, including petunias, can be cut back and should produce another burst of growth, provided the slugs haven’t devoured the base of the plants during the rainy period, he says.

So, what do you do? Don’t despair The rain we’ve had this summer may have gone some way to saving flower borders, but containers left in sheltered spots may have dried out without the luxury of an automatic irrigation system, or a friendly neighbour to water them in your absence. Guy Barter, RHS chief horticultural adviser, reckons that if your bedding plants haven’t dried out completely, you should have a month of good growing weather left in the south of the country and a little less in the north.

142

“The recent wet weather will have helped gardens enormously, but containers are still likely to be fairly dry, so you need to give them a really good soak, deadhead the flowers and give plants a good feed,” he advises.

You should also be able to give trailing plants such as lobelia and bacopa a haircut and a feed, to prompt them into further flowering.

Watch out for slugs “People who have been away during the wet weather should be prepared to come back to find a lot of slug damage,” he adds. “They will eat petunias around the base and feast on hosta leaves, and the plants will not produce more leaves this year.” It may be wise to feed vulnerable plants with nematodes, biological controls which are specifically designed to attack slugs and vine weevil. OUTDOOR LIVING

Be aware that many biological controls become less reliable when the temperature drops, as the predatory insects which provide the control then multiply more slowly. Check for greenfly and blackfly and take off shoots on plants which are infested and dispose of them.

Grab plant bargains “You can also get some plant bargains at garden centres at this time of year, including herbaceous perennials such as delphiniums and lupins, which have finished flowering, but should grow strongly next year and hopefully be free of mildew.”

Tackle overgrown lawns You may be returning to long grass, which will have been growing thanks to the mixed weather we’ve had in summer. When tackling it, Guy recommends not taking off more than a third at a time until it has recovered and don’t feed the lawn until autumn. As for vegetables, you should be returning home to bumper crops, although tomato blight tends to appear in warm, wet weather and if your plants succumb, there’s not a lot you can do apart from consign them to the bonfire.

Giant veg may have to be ditched “You may have enormous marrows when you actually wanted courgettes and rather tough, stringy beans which have been left too long for picking. But some of the overgrown veg could go into chutneys.”

LEFT: Colourful dahlia flower pots (Picture credit: PA Photo/thinkstockphotos)

ABOVE: White lupins in a country cottage setting (Picture credit: PA Photo/Hannah Stephenson)

Lettuces may have bolted or been damaged by slugs and if they are, lift them and replace them with other crops such as Chinese leaves and spinach, while mustard seeds can also be sown for green manure. Spring onions can also be sown now, where they are to mature and left to overwinter until they are ready for harvesting in spring.

not to waterlog the plants. After rewetting, robust architectural plants, such as phormiums and box, can be lifted out of their containers with their root system intact, so you can see if the compost has been completely soaked through.

Fill gaps in borders Fill gaps in flowerbeds with dahlias, which can be lifted at the first frosts, the tubers stored in a frost-free dry place, then replanted next year.

Continue to deadhead roses and cut back finished summer-flowering perennials, removing supports which propped up the plants that have stopped flowering. These can be cleaned with a mild detergent and put away until next year.

And if all else fails... Dunk container plants Containers holding year-round-interest plants, such as shrubs or evergreens, may benefit from being submerged in a bucket of water to re-wet the compost, but it is difficult to tell if the compost is thoroughly soaked and important

MOTORING NEWS The latest news on all things motoring. By Nick Fletcher

NEW VERSION OF AUDI Q2

ROAD TEST: CITROEN BERLINGTON MULTISPACE

Audi has broadened the appeal of its Q2 compact SUV with the addition of a quattro all-wheel-drive version, priced from £36,750. The new 2.0 TFSI produces the highest power output currently available in a Q2, offering 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Top speed is 141mph. Standard features include LED headlights, S Line interior and exterior styling cues, 18-inch alloy wheels, and front sports seats. Also standard is Audi Smartphone Interface, SD card-based MMI Navigation and Audi connect infotainment service package.

The car world is awash with trendy crossover and compact MPVs, some with more accent on image than practicality, but the Citroen Berlingo Multispace is a notable exception, writes NICK FLETCHER. The Multispace is van-based and while the designers have made the frontal profile sleek and smart, the rear retains the boxy look of a van, and to many potential buyers this is actually a plus point. For while rival models lose load space due lower roof lines, sloping tailgates and intruding wheelarches, the taller Multispace offers an amazing 3,000 litres of space, making it attractive to families and business users. Available in petrol, diesel and even electric form, and with 5 or 7 seats, the Multispace is priced from £17,510 and one of the most popular versions features the 1.6 litre diesel unit which offers good fuel economy and low emissions. My midrange Flair had this engine, which offers 98 hp and has a reasonable 0-60 mph time of 12.4 seconds and top speed of 103 mph. Fuel economy is very good at 65.7 mpg combined. In 5-seat version costs £19,705 and standard kit includes 7-inch touchscreen, cruise control and speed limiter,

fuel-saving stop-start, air-conditioning, cruise control, aircraft-style folding tables, DAB radio with USB Bluetooth and media streaming, handy sliding rear doors, alloy wheels, privacy glass, roof bars and plenty of cabin stowage space including a shelf above the windscreen. On the road, the Multispace drives well with low noise levels, slick 5-speed gearshift, and light accurate steering. Ride quality is comfortable, and while the van platform means it doesn’t have quite the handling agility of a crossover, that won’t concern many potential buyers in this class. What will impress them is the amount of money they will save over a comparable crossover or compact MPV, and the amount of load capacity and versatility they will gain. Seating is very comfortable and there is excellent head and leg room for five occupants and a whopping 675 litres of boot space even with the rear seat in use. Folded, you get 3,000 litres. The Berlingo Multispace is certainly not best-looker in the sector but it is still attractively styled and offers a blend of true practicality, decent equipment levels and pleasant driving feel at a price that rivals find very hard to match.

NEW LOOK JAZZ

144

Available this Autumn, a new-look Honda Jazz which also has the option of a new 128 hp 1.5 litre petrol engine. Exterior changes align the Jazz with the latest Honda family style and include revised grille, more sharply sculpted front bumper and more aggressive contours around the air vents. Honda’s 128 hp petrol engine achieves 52.3 mpg combined and CO2 from 124 g/km with the optional CVT automatic transmission. The CVT system itself has been revised to deliver a more refined response under acceleration. The engine is offered as part of a new Sport grade, which adds a thinner front splitter beneath the lower grille, and triple-strake diffuser to the rear bumper – both finished with a sporty red accent line. Standard equipment on the Jazz includes cruise control, automatic headlights and the City-Brake Active safety system. Higher grades feature a 7-inch Honda Connect infotainment system, rear-view parking camera, keyless entry and start, as well as advanced safety technologies such as Forward Collision Warning, LaneDeparture Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition. A 100 hp 1.3 i-VTEC petrol engine will continue to be available across all Jazz trim levels, apart from the new Sport grade.

SPECIAL EDITION FORD GT

ROAD TEST: LEXUS IS300H Lexus isn’t at all modest about its latest IS 300h model, describing it as “the most efficient sports saloon available today’, writes NICK FLETCHER. Hard-headed motoring journalists like to challenge such sweeping statements, but in this instance, it is difficult to dispute. The hybrid Lexus IS competes against more mainstream compact executive saloons such as the Audi A4, Jaguar XE, Mercedes C Class and BMW 3 Series but not all are available in comparable hybrid form and those that are tend to cost more or offer less standard kit. The IS 300h - also available in non-hybrid turbo-petrol form - is priced from £30,105 and comes with distinctive styling, is laden with equipment, beautifully built and finished, and in hybrid form is especially appealing to company car buyers. Its driving experience is quick and quiet and this Lexus scores highly for relatively low running costs – 65.7 mpg combined and very low emissions. Its performance figures underpin its sporty look with 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds, top speed 125 mph. The petrol engine offers 178 hp boosted to 220 hp by an electric motor, and with a revised chassis and slightly firmer

suspension, the overall result is smooth rapid progress with seamless multi-mode CVT gearshifts and composed handling. The cabin has a luxury look which suggests it might belong to a class above, and the seating is exceptionally comfortable. The dashboard looks less conventional than most, with stepped styling dominated by a big 10.3 inch screen. There’s good head and leg room front and rear and the 430 litre boot capacity is good given that some space has been sacrificed to accommodate the hybrid batteries. A useful feature on this saloon is spilt-fold rear seats which means longer items too large for a normal boot can still be loaded. Standard equipment includes keyless entry and pushbutton start, dual zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and rear view camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, leather upholstery, DAB radio/CD, Bluetooth and USB ports. My test model also had Premium sat-nav with remote computer-mouse style control. The Lexus IS 300 hybrid is a refined executive express with strong business-user and that hybrid appeal has recently increased with latest statistics showing a sudden slump in sales of diesel models as drivers fear future tax increases.

The Ford GT will be available in a new limited-edition Heritage theme honouring the GT40 Mark IV race car driven to victory by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt at Le Mans in 1967. The car will feature unique interior and exterior colour themes, and an exclusive wheel finish. Said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “The Ford GT ’67 Heritage edition pays homage to that win, with a modern take on one of the most important vehicles in Ford’s history of racing.” The Ford GT ’67 Heritage edition features a glossfinish Race Red exterior with white stripes and exposed carbon package. The car sports Frozen White No. 1 hood and door graphics, and 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels in silver satin clearcoat with black wheel nuts. Red callipers and silver rearview mirror caps complete the look. Each ’67 Heritage edition car also features a unique serialised identification plate, plus exposed matte carbon fibre door sills, air register pods and centre console. Only a limited number will be available, and the price has not yet been announced.

NEW SSANGYONG REXTON Set to makes its UK debut in October, the new SsangYong Rexton 4x4 which will be priced from £27,500 and come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty. SsangYong says the new model “heralds major advances in style, quality, safety and technology for the brand”. The new Rexton is powered by a 178 hp 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed MercedesBenz automatic transmission. There will be three models from launch: Rexton EX, ELX and Ultimate. Featuring dual-zone fully automated air-conditioning with fine dust filters to all three rows of seats on the ELX (with seven seats) and Ultimate, there’s also a USB connector and 220V/115V inverter available for rear seat passengers.Rexton comes with five and seven seat options. Rear boot space with the seats down (5 seat model) is 1,977 litres, and 820 litres with the seats up. The infotainment system includes DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto for device mirroring, a rear view reversing camera, and displayed on an 8 inch screen or in HD on a wide 9.2 inch screen, including TomTom navigation on ELX and Ultimate models.

TOM KITCHIN TELLS US WHY WE SHOULD EAT MORE GAME Cooking wild meat isn’t as difficult as you might think and kids can eat it too. Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin is on a mission to get us all eating more game. His new book, Meat & Game, is stuffed with tantalising recipes for partridge, grouse and pigeon, as well as rabbit and venison, that should inspire us to go wild and try new things in the kitchen. Game isn’t too tricky to cook, even though it will probably impress your guests, he says. “I’ve tried to make it as accessible as possible, so the person reading the book says, ‘Do you know? I can do that’. And how much of a show-off that is... You have a dinner party and you knock up a bit of rabbit, a bit of wild buck, and they’re like, ‘Wow!’

There’s potted pheasant, Asian poached pheasant, pheasant cock-a-leekie, barbecue pheasant and even pheasant and partridge scotch eggs, to spice up those Saturday dinners. Tom believes game has had a bit of a tough time - seen as simply the preserve of those who go on shooting parties, but wants to reclaim it as meat for everyone, adding: “I’ve never shot anything in my life, honestly!” He’s pleased that game is starting to be recognised as a healthier meat alternative too: “People are starting to understand that eating venison is accessible, it’s so lean, it’s so tasty, it’s not too expensive... It’s about getting out there and getting it.”

Ingredients

Venison Sausage Stew

Olive oil 8 venison sausages 50g smoked lardons 200g celeriac, peeled and chopped 100g leeks, trimmed, chopped and rinsed 2 carrots, peeled and chopped 2 celery sticks, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1tbsp tomato puree 30g plain flour 250ml full-bodied red wine 5 juniper berries, crushed 250ml beef stock 1 bouquet garni 2 green apples 200g cooked chestnuts, halved Hot tagliatelle to serve (optional) Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper

(Serves 4)

Method Heat a flameproof casserole over a mediumhigh heat, then add a good splash of oil. When it is hot, add the sausages and stir for 3 minutes, or until they are well coloured all over, then remove from the casserole and set aside. Add a splash more oil to the casserole, if necessary, then add the lardons and saute until they have rendered their fat and are well coloured. Add the celeriac, leeks, carrots, celery, onion and tomato puree, and continue sauteing for a further 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle in the flour and stir for 1 minute to cook out the raw flavour. Add the wine and juniper berries, stirring to deglaze the pan, and boil until the wine reduces by half. Add the stock and bouquet garni, then return the sausages and any accumulated cooking juices to the casserole. Cover the casserole and leave to simmer over a medium heat for 20 minutes, or until all the vegetables are tender and the flavours blended.

Blackened Chicken Tacos (Makes 12)

PA Photo/Marc Millar/Absolute Press

Ingredients

Method

4 free-range chicken breast fillets, each cut into 5 strips 100g Cajun spice mix Olive oil Sea salt For the avocado and pea guacamole: 200g frozen peas Olive oil Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lime 3 ripe avocados 2 small green chillies, deseeded and very finely chopped 2 spring onions, finely chopped For the tomato salsa: 200g cherry tomatoes, chopped 1/2 green chilli, deseeded and chopped 1tbsp finely chopped shallot To serve: 1 Baby Gem lettuce, shredded 100g creme fraiche 12 small tacos shells Sunflower seeds

Place the chicken strips in a non-reactive bowl and add a good sprinkling of spice mix and a splash of olive oil - the spicier you like your food, the more spice mix you should use. Season lightly with salt, then set aside for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, make the guacamole. Bring a saucepan of lightly salted water to the boil and set a bowl of iced water in the sink. Add the frozen peas to the boiling water and blanch for 3-5 minutes until tender. Drain them well, then tip them into the iced water to stop them cooking and set the colour. Drain the peas again and transfer to a blender or food processor with about 2 tablespoons of oil, the lime zest and juice and a splash of water. Season with salt and blend to make a chunky puree. Set aside. Halve the avocados, remove the stones and peel them. Put the flesh in a non-reactive bowl and use a fork to coarsely mash. Add the pea puree, green chillies and spring onions, and season with salt.

Cover the surface closely with clingfilm and chill for up to 2 hours until required. To make the tomato salsa, put all the ingredients in a non-reactive bowl and season with salt and pepper. Set aside until required. When you’re ready to cook the chicken, heat a large well-seasoned saute or frying pan over a medium-high heat, then brush the surface with oil. When it is hot, add as many chicken strips as will fit without over-crowding the pan and fry, turning once, for 4 minutes, until they are cooked through and tender. Cook in batches, adding a little extra oil, if necessary. Remove the chicken from the pan and keep hot. To serve, divide the shredded lettuce among the taco shells. Top each with a couple of spoonfuls of guacamole, followed by chicken. Add the tomato salsa and a dollop of creme fraiche to each, then sprinkle with sunflower seeds and serve. 147

FOOD & DRINK

Open Partridge & Pancetta Toasties with Onion Compote (Serves 4)

PA Photo/Marc Millar/Absolute Press

148

Ingredients

Method

4 partridge breasts, skinned Olive oil Butter for spreading 4 sourdough bread slices 2 hard-boiled free-range eggs, sliced 8 pancetta rashers, cooked until crispy Watercress sprigs 4 slices cheddar cheese - Tom’s cheese of choice for this recipe comes from the Isle of Mull, but any strong cheddar would do Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper For the onion compote: 50g butter Olive oil 2 white onions, sliced 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2tsp thyme leaves

The onion compote is ready to use as soon as it is made, or it can be stored in a covered container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Heat a well-seasoned saute or frying pan with a lid over a medium-high heat, then add the butter with a splash of oil. When the butter is foaming, add the onions, garlic and thyme and season with salt and pepper. Cover with a wet piece of greaseproof paper, cover the pan with the lid, turn the heat to very low and leave the onions to sweat for 20-25 minutes until they are very tender. Transfer to a plate and set aside to cool. When you’re ready to cook, preheat the grill to high. Meanwhile, place a partridge breast in between 2 sheets of clingfilm and use a meat mallet or rolling pin to lightly bash until flattened. Repeat with the remaining breasts. Pat the breasts dry and season them all with salt and pepper.

Heat a well-seasoned saute or frying pan over a medium-high heat, then add a splash of oil. When it’s hot, add the breasts and sear them for 2-3 minutes on each side until cooked through, then set aside to rest for 5 minutes covered with kitchen foil. Fry the breasts in batches, if necessary. Toast the sourdough slices on both sides under the grill, then lightly butter each. Do not turn off the grill. Spread the pieces of toast with the onion compote and add the egg slices. Top with the partridge breasts, crispy pancetta, watercress and finally the cheese. Place the toasties under the grill until the cheese melts, then lightly season with salt and cracked pepper.

CANING IT WITH THE BEST: 3 RECIPES TO CELEBRATE RUM’S GOOD FORTUNES Tipple of choice for eye-patched plunderers, the beverage is re-emerging as a premium spirit to be treasured neat or mixed. Synonymous with pirates and the Caribbean, rum is enjoying a revival but you don’t need to carouse with seafaring scoundrels to drown a cocktail laced with a clear white spirit, or plunge into a golden oldie for some spicy warmth. This legendary drink is distilled from sugarcane juice and other sugarcane by-products, such as molasses, and matured in oak barrels. White rum is for mixing and can be aged up to three years, while the darker ones can be aged anywhere from three to 21 years (and more). And if you want to discover why rum is becoming the hottest spirit in the world, the latest offering from master mixologist Tristan Stephenson is a treasure chest of silver and gold (rum). The Curious Bartender’s Rum Revolution delves into rum’s darker past, with tales of devils and pirates, and why it’s in the midst of another revolution and transforming into a premium spirit. “I believe there’s something for everyone in this spirit. Drunk neat, rum is a marvel,” says Tristan. “In mixed drinks, it is magical. Virtually any cocktail will willingly have its base spirit substituted for (the right) rum, but the stable of classics in this category speak for themselves: Daiquiri, mojito, pina colada and mai tai to name but a few.” By Sam Wylie-Harris Here are three of Tristan’s recipes to get you in the mood for a rumfest without the need for a rum shack...

Cuba Libre

More often than not, the simplest drinks are the best. This is certainly true of the Cuba libre, which comprises only two ingredients, plus a necessary garnish. Some would argue this isn’t a cocktail at all, but a spirit and a mixer. But those folks fail to recognize the genius of Coca-Cola as a bittersweet ingredient and the complexity of its composition.

Ingredients 50ml aged white rum 120ml Coca Cola Half a lime

Method 1. In accordance with the version of this drink in Charles H. Baker’s Gentleman’s Companion (1939), I’m a strong advocate of a quick lime muddle as the first step of construction.

PA Photo/Addie Chinn/Ryland Peters and Small

150

2. Squeeze the lime juice into a separate vessel and drop the spent shell into a highball glass. Squash it to remove the oils, then add cubed ice, rum, lime juice and coke. Give it a good stir and add more ice or coke if desired.

FOOD & DRINK

This cocktail is about discretion and finesse, and to balance it correctly you need a higher ratio of rum: Eights parts rum, one part lime, and just over one part sugar (depending on how sweet your sugar syrup is). With this formula, the drink is less opaque and seems to glow with a soft turquoise luminance. It tastes better, too, as those soft aguardiente notes are gently sweetened, penetrating fleshy citrus with grace.

Daiquiri

Ingredients 60ml Bacardi Carta Blanca (£13, 70cl, Waitrose) 15ml fresh lime juice 10ml sugar syrup

Method

PA Photo/Addie Chinn/Ryland Peters and Small

1. Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously with cubed ice for at least 30 seconds. Strain into a frozen coupe glass. Don’t garnish it - there’s no point - the drink will be gone before you (or your guests) even notice it’s there.

Judging by the number of bad mojitos I’ve been served in my time, this is not an easy drink to balance.

Mojito

The mistake many bartenders make is muddling/crushing whole wedges of lime into the drink. This is a poor tactic because limes vary dramatically in the amount of juice they offer up, and unless the sugar is balanced accordingly, you’ll be landed with something that’s insipidly sweet or far too sour.

Ingredients 50ml Havana Club 3-Year-Old (£19.35, 70cl, The Whisky Exchange) 20ml lime juice 10ml sugar syrup 12 fresh mint leaves, soda water

Method 1. Take a chunky highball and throw the mint leaves in. Please don’t ‘slap’ them as is the ritual of some cocktail makers - in doing so you’re merely aromatizing your hands. 2. Gently bruise the mint leaves using a muddler. It’s essential that you’re gentle - if you crush the leaves you’ll release bitter-tasting chlorophyll into the drink. 3. Douse the leaves in the rum and give a good stir, then add the lime juice and sugar syrup. Throw a scoop of crushed ice in and give the mixture a good churn with a long spoon. Pile more ice on top, give it another stir, then fill any space with soda.

PA Photo/Addie Chinn/Ryland Peters and Small

4. Stir again, add more ice (if needed), then garnish with a lime wedge and a fresh sprig of mint. Drink with a straw. 151

ONE FOR ALL, AT BE AT ONE! Anyone that lives (or grew up in) Bournemouth will tell you that its night-life scene has changed rapidly over the last ten to twenty years. Most of the clubs from our partying years have gone and not much – if anything – has stepped in to replace them. Whilst the existing bars serve a purpose to Stags and Hens hoping to get lathered with liquor, the question remains: what’s left for locals? Over the years the basement bar of Richmond Hill has housed the likes of several different brands; Consortium, Kukui, Lola Lo, Sakura – all of which came to an untimely end, thanks to the decline of nightclubbing and the rise of ‘bar-hoping’. Well, allow us to introduce the latest (and maybe greatest) newbie to take over the premises, the ‘Be At One’ group. We had been invited (courtesy of our friends over at Route Pr) to a cocktail masterclass and the subsequent launch of the new it bar.

We arrived at the red-neon lit entrance – the glow calling to us much like the sweet siren of booze – where a smiling host was waiting. She led us down the stairwell into the basement below, pushed open the doors and lo and behold; a buzzing throng of post-work drinkers, press and flaring bartenders galore. On mission as always, we headed to the bar to start our sampling. “What will it be?” cooed the suave server. Unable to choose from their seriously extensive menu, we implored him to choose for us. He took our flavour and alcoholic preferences and soon after two picturesque cocktails arrived – such service! Each taking our seats, we scanned the room; everyone was smiling, drink in hand. As soon as the rest of the group had sat down and made their introductions the class began. The masterclass was a whirlwind of alcoholic history. Taking us through Be

At One’s making, I learnt that the same guys responsible for the brand had all previously worked at TGI Friday’s – known for it’s fun-loving approach to cocktails. Which was no surprise having seen the incredible comprehensiveness of Be At One’s drinks menu. I also learnt that each and every bartender undergoes an enormous £5,000 worth of training before being allowed to serve a single drink. Our host taught us how to make five or so cocktails from each category: rum, tequila, vodka and whiskey – nothing was spared (and nor were our heads the next day). A particular favourite of mine was the appropriately named ‘Pain Killer’; rum, pineapple, orange, rum, coconut cream, oh and more rum. If you like Pina Coladas (aka holiday in a cup) then you’ll love this! It was a wonderful way to get to know our new local. Their incredible menu, along with their skilled barkeeps and new-york loft atmosphere will have guests (including, no, especially us) coming back time and time again. HEALTH & BEAUTY The latest beauty tips and treatments from the owner of Chic Beauty Salon & Academy, Sophie Tamagna

FOCUS ON MEN’S SKIN There are many men who pay a lot of attention to their body and health. However, most of them forget about the fact that our skin is the largest organ of our body. This means it should be the first thing we pay attention to! Many Dermatologists suggest that Facials are more important for men as compared to women. Men have rougher skin with larger pores as compared to women. Large pores not only mean more visibility when it comes to a dirty face, but also higher exposure rate for environmental hazards. Facials can help reduce pore size and keep the skin free from oils that could attract unwanted particles and dirt your skin doesn’t need. It can also help the skin look a little less rugged, making a shaving a more pleasant experience. It also keeps men from having additional skin problems and concerns, like skin tags, age spots, and more. It’s also believed that men find facials very relaxing and can help in reducing stress. A facial can have a very big effect on a person’s life. It can help boost confidence, self-esteem, and overall outlook in life. 1. Men Produce More Oil In general, men have higher testosterone levels than women, which helps explain why men produce more oil. When not cleaned properly, oil will clog

Just because men produce more oil doesn’t mean all men have oily skin. Part of the reason facials are so effective is that aestheticians understand your skin type and its needs. For dry skin types, you’ll need a facial that leaves your skin hydrated and moisturised. If you have oily skin, you will need a facial that decreases your shine, shrinks your pores and exfoliates your skin. 2. You’ll Get a Smoother Shave Whether it’s every day or every two weeks, the continuous dragging of a razor across sensitive facial skin can cause irritation. Razor burn, inflammation, and irritation from shaving over pimples are common consequences of shaving. A facial will deep clean bumps and soothe irritated skin. The combination of exfoliation, essential oils, masks, and moisturisers that an aesthetician typically applies will address shaving’s side effects and make your skin smoother than ever. The smoother your skin, the better and less painful your shave. Even if you aren’t worried about wrinkles, this is one of the best reasons to slap on some moisturiser once or twice a day.

your pores and can lead to blackheads, which can lead to pimples. Most aestheticians will perform extractions during a facial, which is the very precise removal of oil and dirt that’s clogging pores. Do this yourself at home and risk serious skin damage, but in the right hands, the result is clean, clear skin.

3. The Pros Can Teach You Aestheticians use better, more effective products that aren’t sold over the counter. They can show you new techniques on how to apply products, the order in which to use them, and explain why. Chances are, you’ll be relaxed and if you want to check out, fine. But you can use this opportunity to ask questions. “What are you putting on my face?” “Why is that product going on first?” Aestheticians also use professional steamers to open your pores aiding the absorption of beneficial products. What to Expect A Chic Skincare Therapist will customise your Facial to suit your specific skin requirements using Dermalogica Skincare. During your Facial your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, steamed and any pore clearing work carried out. All our Facials include lots of Massage so are great for ultimate relaxation. Your therapist will talk you through any specific issues and recommend when to have your next Facial (normally every 4-6 weeks) and what you can be doing at home in between to maintain your results!

TRY SALT THERAPY FOR HEALTHY SKIN AND MORE…

Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire area, making them one of the most

The particles of dry salt that settle on skin during a salt therapy session have numerous benefits – therapeutic and cosmetic. Salt therapy gently and effectively boosts exfoliation, removing dull, dead skin cells and debris from the surface. This can help clear impacted follicles and prevent acne formation. It also helps normalise the skin’s pH-balance and fortify the skin’s protective barrier.

can rest assured in the knowledge that the treatments provided are

• Male Anti wrinkle

• Cheek Fillers

Dry salt aerosol has anti-bacterial properties, yet its gentle action does not compromise the skin’s normal microflora. It’s also an antiinflammatory, reducing redness and swelling, which make it beneficial in treating certain skin conditions, such as acne (you can combine with microdermabrasion and blue light therapy for faster results), eczema and psoriasis. It provides long-lasting relief from redness, irritation and skin rashes, helping to significantly reduce discomfort associated with lesions, scales and inflamed tissue.

• Excessive Sweating

• Fat Reduction

• Lip Fillers

• Skin Care

• Skin Peels

• Thread Lifts

• Thread Veins

• Female Anti Wrinkle

Salt therapy contributes to post-surgery recovery, helping repair and promote healthy tissue regeneration and the prevention of scar tissue. It also helps prevent secondary infections by restoring the skin’s natural defensive properties, nourishing and revitalising the skin’s delicate tissues. Salt therapy boosts skin microcirculation, facilitating deeper penetration of therapeutic skin care serums, lotions and creams, and it facilitates the elimination of toxins. It works synergistically with skin care treatments and helps maximise results. Moreover, its antioxidant properties help fight free radicals – for a powerful anti-aging effect. The end result is skin with a natural, healthy glow. Clients who arrive in our salt room to address skin conditions are also very likely to experience an improvement in general health and wellbeing, with improved immunity and reduced hypersensitivity to the common allergens and other irritants that can trigger skin disorders. Skin conditions are often exacerbated by stress and when clients take in the benefits of Salt Therapy in the peaceful atmosphere of a welldesigned salt room, they are likely to experience a much greater sense of calm and wellbeing.

FOOD & DRINK

REVIEWED

We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...

GRILL SHACK & TIKI BAR Jamaican’ me hungry! Little known fact, my grandmother was born in Jamaica. Not that I expect anyone reading this to know that, but mealtimes at Nanny Eggy’s (she made us a lot of eggs as kids) were always a pleasure, especially as we grew and learnt to appreciate food more. It’s a little harder now we live down in Dorset and she’s still in London, but whenever we visit she’s always got something new and exciting in her cupboards and likewise when she visits she’s brings them with her. One time, as kids, she sliced open a raw coconut and we drank the milk inside. I always remember her talking about curried goat and ackee and saltfish, reminiscing over of her time in the Caribbean. It was her excitement about Jamaican food that got me excited about it, but the opportunity to enjoy it is few and far between down here. So you can image my excitement when we were invited to a Jamaican inspired restaurant in Southbourne. Grill Shack & Tiki Bar is the product of Chef Daniels skill and imagination. Colourful shanti-style cladding covers the room, with straw and tin in plentiful supply. As you walk in you are imminently drawn to the centralised straw-thatched bar,

occupied with glowing neons, novelty glassware and a lot of rum. The theme (as you might have guessed) is Caribbean food, with a few popular Western twists. Spicedrubbed meats, burgers, wraps and more were all on the menu and we couldn’t wait to try them! We sat down and got ourselves comfortable at a long wooden table opposite the bar – our usual stomping ground. Our host, whose smile made us feel totally at home, made it his business to ensure our glasses were always full. My (and my coconspirator Vicky’s) glass was filled with a moreish piña colada slushie – had I closed my eyes I might have thought I was on holiday. A few sips and a gander at the menu later, we submitted our choices. Soon after, our food arrived. Piping hot and rich with intense aromas, we couldn’t wait to tuck in. Inspired by my grandmother I had opted for the Goat Curry and it was a great choice. The meat was beautiful; falling off the bone and melting in the mouth, packed with a complex blend of spices. I ate ritualistically; taking a scoop of rice and peas, a chunk of goat, sweep

of sauce (and a little slaw for good measure) all onto the same fork, creating a multitude of complimentary flavours and textures in one bite. Whilst we each chose our prospective mains, the food just seemed to keep coming – Chef Daniels wanted to ensure we tried everything, and so we did. Next I sample the signature ‘Griot’ – that’s pork to you and me. Based on a traditional Haitian recipe, the pork is marinated in a sweet-cum-savory sauce and cooked until tender and the result is delicious. I asked Vicky if she had enjoyed her ‘Halloumi and Mushroom Wrap’ to which she replied – and I quote – “the best I’ve ever had”. I was really pleasantly surprised by The Grill Shack & Tiki Bar – having visited when it was the former ‘Quarters’ burger bar, this new and vibrant menu got me excited about food again. If you love Caribbean – or better yet just really tasty – food then you have to pay these guys a visit.
