ENCORE CARE HOMES’ ACTIVITIES ARE GIVEN SOME OOMPH! Encore Care Homes is delighted to announce its new partnership with OOMPH! starting this month in all three of its homes, which are located in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Fareham. Established in 2011, Oomph! works closely with care and housing services throughout the UK, to support staff and help residents improve their health and fitness, through fun exercises and activities. During the programme residents and staff at Encore will take part in a variety of sport, music, relaxation and nature workshops. One of the key workshops in the project is Oomph! Sport, which aims to make physical activities as fun and beneficial as possible for residents. The training programme involves a variety of chairbased exercises to upbeat music. These exercises will increase the health and wellbeing of Encore’s residents, and are also a great opportunity for those who want to try something new and improve their fitness.

Another element of the Oomph! programme is providing in-house activity training and support to the management and staff members of Encore. During this time all staff will create a unique, varied and person-centred programme, which will bring added value to the home. Izzy Nicholls, operations and quality director of Encore Care Homes, said: “We are very much looking forward to starting the Oomph! programme across all three of our homes. Oomph! makes sure that everyone who wants to be involved stays active at a level that they’re comfortable with, whilst having some fun. “Not only is Oomph! a brilliant experience for our residents, but it’s also going to be extremely beneficial for our staff across the three homes. It will give our team the chance to review their work and improve their activity skills, which they can put to use in the future.” Ben Allen, chief executive of Oomph!, added: “We are excited to have the opportunity to work with the team at

NEW DORSET MEN’S HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUPPORT GROUP ‘BOYS, BRAVES AND BONFIRES’ ‘Boys, Braves and Bonfires’ is a new Dorset support network run ‘by men for men’ which aims to grow and become a national organisation. It has been launched by Wimbornebased coach Francis Raven-Vause in recognition of the growing agenda for men’s health and wellbeing. Francis has had a varied career in agriculture, the motor and leisure sector and has travelled extensively meeting people from all walks of life. A Master Practitioner of NLP, he found himself specialising in coaching people dealing with stress, anger and depression-related disorders. “I spotted a growing requirement to help and support men at times of personal transition. The ‘Boys, Braves and Bonfires’ groups will be cross cultural and diverse, non-denominational and inclusive.” said Francis. “My aim is to help men develop and improve career, relationships, their friendships and reduce emotional isolation during times of transition, such as becoming a husband, a father, an elder, when facing divorce, or acting as a carer, during bereavement, and other pivotal times. That might mean children leaving home, redundancy or career re-organisation.” ‘Boys, Braves and Bonfires’ has been designed to be a safe and supportive space where men bond whilst undertaking fun activities for example playing the didgeridoo, foraging, hurdle making, wood and wilderness crafts, sporting events and walks. However, a group might choose to tackle a community interest project as members’ interests drive organic growth. Monthly meetings will take place at venues to suit the group with a speaker, and Francis is looking at partnering with other organisations to offer discounted events and activities. Membership includes a bi-monthly e-newsletter, closed social media group and a reward-based card. www.heartledwellbeing.com

RETRO BAKING STAR AT TASTE OF THE SOUTH

LIGHTHOUSE TO LIGHTHOUSE CHARITY RUN

The creative baker and glamorous retrostyle author behind Restoration Cake, and TV star Charlotte White, will be appearing at the forthcoming Taste of the South Festival in Dorset this July.

There’s nothing Lighthouse Stage Door attendant Stephen Collins likes more than a challenge – and if it involves running then so much the better.

Through her bespoke cake designs, books (Burlesque Baking and Deliciously Decorated), inspirational classes and regular live demonstrations across the UK – Charlotte’s aim is ‘working tirelessly to bring glamour back into the kitchen, one cake at a time’. Taste of the South is set to showcase the region’s top talent, not merely food and drink, but also art and culture. The two-day festival will be held at Chapel Gate, Christchurch, over the weekend of July 21-22. Guests will be able to watch Charlotte at work on both days, creating both cakes and desserts. She will also speak about vegan baking, having baked vegan cakes since 2009. Charlotte said: “I’m super excited to be appearing at Taste of the South at beautiful Chapel Gate.” Charlotte is based in Bedford and named her company after the Restoration 16601685, the reign of King Charles II, the Merry Monarch, ‘a time of opulence, pleasure, and indulgence’. Charlotte said:

“This travelling showgirl chef will arrive in a flurry of edible glitter to show you how to make desserts that taste as amazing as they look... and they will look amazing!” Chef demonstrations are free to watch and access to the festival is from £4 by advance ticket and £7 on the door. Kids under 12 go for free and parking is free. For regular updates visit www. tastesouth.events. For more information or to enquire about exhibitor space, please contact info@ tastesouth.co.uk or call 01202 896698.

SCRUM ON DOWN FOR CHARITY LUNCH Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is all set for its eighth annual Rugby Lunch sponsored by Dixon Stewart, taking place on Friday 14 September at Hoburne Holiday Park in Christchurch. The Rugby Lunch is set to be a fantastic day of great entertainment, food, networking opportunities and guest celebrity appearances from Paul Rendall – a former English rugby union player who played for London Wasps and has 28 caps for England, Jeff Probyn – also a former English rugby union player who played for the old Albanians, Streatham and Wasps and has 37 caps for England, plus David

Duckham MBE - an England, Barbarians and British Lions legend, known in his day for his great pace, swerves and side steps. Over the past seven years the event has raised a combined total of over £166,000 and it is hoped this year will be a great success. Funds will be raised to ensure the charity can continue to make a difference to children and adults living with disabilities in the county, and their families. For more information about the Rugby Lunch or to book tickets please visit www.diverseabilities.org.uk/events or call 01202 718266.

His response to the arts centre’s 40th anniversary ‘Challenge 40’ campaign for every member of staff, the Board and volunteers to raise at least £40 for the ‘Love Lighthouse’ fundraising appeal was to reach for his running shoes. But where to run? “I was talking to our duty manager Tom Holmes and came up with this idea that Dorset has two working lighthouses at Portland Bill and Anvil Point so it seemed obvious to run between them – the fact they turned out to be 40 miles apart just sealed the deal,” says Stephen, who ran the South West Coast Path last year in aid of the Dorset Cancer Centre and a local hospice. Lighthouse receives crucial funding from Arts Council England and the Borough of Poole, but as a charity also depends on the generosity of the individuals, businesses and trusts/foundations who recognise the value of the arts to the shared community. To sponsor or help Stephen’s Challenge 40 run email him at stephen. collins@lighthousepoole. co.uk

KITCHEN HOUSE Since their founding in 1987, Kitchen House has provided new kitchens ranging from fixed budget kitchens, right through to larger and more complex, designer kitchens. Being a local business (without the large scale marketing budgets of a national chain) they have always relied on a good reputation within the area to sustain them. Unlike the big chains, they take the time to make sure that you’re completely happy with what they have installed. A high portion of their work has come from prior recommendation.

A bespoke kitchen Kitchen House fit full kitchens, including all necessary units and kitchen appliances like ovens and other white goods. Still, there’s more to designing a stunning kitchen than just having all the right components. They offer tailored design advice, based on each individual space. Say your kitchen is only three metres across, they can design

bespoke made worktops and units to utilise your space to it’s full potential and with almost 30 years in business, they have seen and done it all. You can put your full faith in their hands when it comes to designing a kitchen that you will love.

The price of a new kitchen Before you even contact them you’ll probably have an idea of how much you want to spend on a new kitchen. It’s a big investment, especially in the modern financial world. There are some companies who will give you a lower quality kitchen, and others that insist you should spend more. The team at Kitchen House will work their hardest to work with your budget, creating something that works both financially and atheistically for you. They’ll work with you to make sure that the kitchen you get is personal, efficient and suits your home without the need to increase budget.

Using the best kitchen appliances and fittings Kitchens are often in constant use, so it’s always best to invest in the most robust and efficient products. Their extensive range of worktops and ovens are sourced from the leading manufacturers, who use only the most effective materials. Their appliance suppliers include leading brands like Smeg, Fisher & Paykel, Siemens, Falcon and Mercury. With access to these high quality manufacturers your new kitchen can be fitted with stylish and reliable range cookers, ovens, fridges and freezers. If you have any questions about the service they provide, please feel free to get in touch. If you’d rather take a look at some of the features that they offer in person, then head down to their showroom. Their friendly team will be more than happy to talk it over with you.

BROADVIEW SHADING SOLUTIONS Cool your conservatory with classic blinds Conservatories are billed as one of the top home improvements for adding space and value to your home and it’s no secret that having that extra space to relax or entertain friends and family can be extremely useful. However, when the weather warms up so does your conservatory and on occasion, they can become unbearably hot and stuffy. To ensure their conservatories can be used all year round, many people are turning to installing

bespoke conservatory blinds to offer protection from the heat in the Summer months as well as to provide insulation during the Winter. A special conservatory blind installation for Poole-based Broadview Shading Solutions was this luxury period property in Bournemouth. The client contacted the Broadview team looking for a classic and seamless shading solution to complement the traditional style of their property. As well as offering

French pinoleum blinds are recognised as being able to maintain an ambient temperature all year round due to their natural timber woven construction. Available in a wide range of colours and fabrics, they can also be operated manually or electrically automated using remote control. After just four weeks from start to finish, the end result for the client when the Broadview team had completed the installation was simply stunning and meant that more time could be spent enjoying the conservatory in all weathers.

protection from the hot and cold, privacy was also a factor, as was the need for covering the roof and side windows of the conservatory for optimum protection. Following a consultation at the property, our team advised on French Pinoleum roman style blinds from Ballauff, the leading manufacturer of pinoleum blinds. Made from veneers and reeds of natural wood woven together in different combination with braided edging, these blinds create a sophisticated and elegant look every time.

As well as offering solutions for their client’s interior shading requirements such as blinds, shutters and luxury curtains, the expert team at Broadview also specialise in outdoor shading including garden awnings and pergola systems for both homeowners and businesses.

GOING FOR THE GOLD We’ve all seen the recent obsessions with copper, bronze, brass and steel, but we have come back around to gold. However, the secret to this trend is proportion. We have already got used to decorating with tiles, bold patterns, unusual shades and vintage furniture, but this year we are going for even more pronounced graphics in ceramics, in a combination of colours that were previously considered dull – if not ugly – like brown and orange or mint green and grey. ASK THE EXPERT...

WE ANSWER YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Steph Selby heads up our dedicated Property Team that specialise in whatever you need from residential flats insurance, her team can provide bespoke solutions for your insurance needs incorporating expert advice to manage and reduce risk and ultimately cost. This week we thought we would answer a few frequently asked questions: What is the difference between the declared value and the sum insured? The declared value is the rebuilding cost of the property and most insurers give a percentage uplift on the figure in order to take into account any rise in building costs, labour, materials etc that may occur during the time it takes to rebuild and this is known as the sum insured. Are our garages covered? The definition of a building includes any outbuildings attached to or detached from the main building. What is Property Owners Liability? It covers you in the event of accidental injury to any person (if the postman came to deliver some letters and a tile fell off the roof of your building and caused injury) Why do I need Employers Liability insurance when I have no employees? A member of your family could visit and be asked by you to change a light bulb in the communal area and fall off the ladder and as they would be deemed to be a voluntary helper, this would cover them. What does Communal Contents mean/cover? It will cover items within your communal area, which includes carpets, table, chair, coat stand, picture, for example. As with all our clients, our relationships with homeowners and landlords are founded on personal service and direct accountability - we remain completely independent of our insurers and act only in your best interests.

HOLIDAY HOME OWNERSHIP

FOOTBALL & HOLIDAY LETTING How the beautiful game affects your beautiful holiday home World cup fever is upon us so I thought I might as well join in but what could football possibly have to do with holiday letting? The answer is a bit more than you think. BIG EVENT EFFECT The World Cup is the biggest example of this phenomenon which also occurs during the Euros, Olympics and royal weddings to name a few. If you are able to book outside of school holidays then by definition you are probably not tied to a specific week so there’s a tendency to stay at home for the big event. I imagine conversations across the dinner table along the lines of wife: ‘I was thinking of booking a holiday home in Sandbanks for the first week in July again’. Husband composes a straight face and says, ‘Oh I was going to surprise you with a special September break this year.’ MATCH OF THE DAY EFFECT A lot of our booking takes place at weekends and for years I’ve been used to waking up on Sunday morning to a healthy chunk of deposits to process. It was only this year that I had the aha moment and spotted that a lot of these were arriving between 10.30 and 11.30 – during Match of the Day! I’m guessing that after a sitting on

the sofa and making a decision, one member of the family makes the booking whist the other watches the football. I’ll be keeping a sharp eye on the match schedule and maybe we’ll even increase our Google advertising during the England matches and the final. Of course the final will be an England match! BIG TVS If you’re a regular reader you’ll have heard me banging on about this where size is definitely important. Big TVs are now very cheap and one of the best investments you can make. Yes I’ve had the conversation a hundred times with owners – ‘people are supposed to be on holiday.’ ‘Why can’t they go for a walk and enjoy themselves?’ I take your point but when it’s lashing

rain and blowing a gale your guest will be grumpy if they want to curl up on the sofa and watch a DVD and all their £1,500 bought them was a 22 inch TV. Out of season it gets cold and dark early and if you run a company like me the only time you ever get to watch a bit of telly is when you are on holiday. Most of all it’s one of the things that follow Simon’s rule that you have to find a way to choose and it doesn’t have to be significant. Imagine you advertise a job and get a hundred applications, you can’t possibly see everyone so you have to make some sweeping decisions – nobody who lives more than 5 miles away, nobody under 25 etc. Those candidates might have been the best but you have to get to a shortlist

somehow. So it is with choosing a holiday property – 2 minutes of search will give you hundreds of options and you have to narrow it down somehow. As you swipe through the list a small TV may get you knocked off the shortlist. CHANNELS & BROADBAND SPEED Working out the value of paying for extra channels including sports has always been difficult and one of the biggest things to consider is the Champions League. It’s on for a lot of out of season weeks when there’s plenty of choice so providing access can get you on to that shortlist. Fortunately technology has changed and now it’s on BT sport so anyone who is interested will have online access so get the fastest connection you can and if you are replacing the TV get a smart one with built in online display. I’ll be trying to enjoy the tournament without thinking about the lost rent and maybe we’ll have a bumper September.

OUTDOOR LIVING

EXPERT CRAFTSMANSHIP

Oak Fence Panels & Screens by Dorset Design Build ‘The mighty oak’, one of the primordial and arguably most famous trees in the entire world. A symbol of strength and survival, the oak tree is rightly known for its quality and durability, but often overlooked for it’s great natural beauty…until now. With everything around us heading towards a kind of synthesized reality, it’s about time we got back to appreciating the majesty of natural beauty, and more specifically, just how incredible organic resources can be. With that, we welcome the latest

creation from expert landscapers Dorset Design Build, their signature ‘Oak Fence Panels’. In the hopes of turning our fences from unattractive barriers to features in their own right, Dorset Design Build have spent time handcrafting these incredible, new Oak Fence Panels. Your average fence panel is usually an after thought, or not a thought at all — merely something to be re-painted once a year once the adverse effects of winter weather clear up. These

Every one of these individual panels has been handcrafted so you can rest assured of the quality and integrity of the product. They can be created with either vertical or horizontal slats to suit your taste. But it’s not just fence panels that this amazing material can be used for… In fact, Dorset Design Build have also put their new product to use as stunning planters — the likes of which would make a great addition to any outdoor space and can be built just the right size for your garden. Oak cladding can also be used to disguise some necessary functional items within a garden, such as this bicycle shed, but can equally be used to create something like this amazing outdoor kitchen with built in BBQ, pizza oven and herb planters.

panels are typically made of softwood, which in itself isn’t always the most attractive wood, with its coarse façade and flakey texture. Oak however, is a hardwearing, strong and resilient wood and is also incredibly beautiful and we have found it can really make a unique feature, such as your fence panels, even more attractive. Carved from specially grown European Oak, from sustainable sources, every sheet of wood has its own originality, with all of the varying grains and knots making up a set of unique characteristics, nonpareil to a manmade replica.

It can even be used to create a stunning outdoor seating area, much like this bespoke sitting arrangement. Featuring an oak-moulded Millboard seat with oak backrest, which also doubles up as a raised planter, creating a soft and sensory background for those long summer evenings and cosy winter nights by the heater. The new Oak Range is now available to the public across Dorset and Hampshire, with an online store coming very soon. So whatever your next garden project, allow Dorset Design Build to show you how their latest range of bespoke products could turn up the “WOW” factor, and make you proud to come home to such an amazing space.

We specialise in creating bespoke solutions for our customers. Every garden is unique, and every customer has a unique set of requirements for their garden — no two are the same, and neither are the solutions. – LOUISA JENKINS, DIRECTOR, DORSET DESIGN BUILD

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

5 TOP TIPS FOR LOFT CONVERSIONS If you need more space at home, converting the loft into an extra room, or rooms, can make a lot of sense, both now and when you come to sell

1

If your home’s loft is more useful to you as living space than storage, converting it is the obvious thing to do. A loft conversion should make your home more valuable and sellable, and if you can fit a bathroom or shower room up there, as well as a bedroom and built-in storage, you have the perfect master or guest suite.

2

Loft conversions cost from around £20,000, but are often a lot more, depending on the size, spec and type of conversion. The cheapest and easiest loft conversions are ones with only skylights, as the line of the roof is unchanged. However, this isn’t ideal if the loft has limited space and head height.

3

Building out the roof to create more useable space inside will give you a much more satisfactory conversion. As long as there are no planning restrictions, building a full-width dormer window across the roof at the back and changing the side of the roof so it’s ‘straight’ (viewed from the front or back) instead of sloping (this isn’t possible with mid-terraced houses) will maximise the space internally.

4

For a loft to be suitable for conversion, the main space should be at least 2.3m high - generally, the steeper the pitch of the roof, the better it will be for conversion. Standing up in the loft and walking around (if safe to do so) will give you an idea of how much useable space there is. If there isn’t enough head height, even by building out the roof, you may be able to lower the ceilings in the rooms below, but this will be expensive and disruptive and isn’t practical if they’re already quite low. Another option may be to rebuild the roof to make it higher, which is also a big, expensive job.

5

You’ll need space for a staircase up to the loft on the floor below and if this means losing a bedroom, you may not be much better off by converting the loft. Spiral staircases can be a good space-saving solution, as can narrow (and straight) ‘space-saver’ staircases, although they aren’t necessarily practical for everyday use and are unlikely to comply with building regulations.

TALKING BUSINESS

PROTECT THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST No-one really likes to consider bad things happening, but if you were to be injured, unable to work or lose your job, how would you manage to pay your mortgage and your cost of living bills? Local company Homeline Protect may have the answer, by offering you the opportunity to review what type of cover you have in place (if any), and to help you assess means of protecting your income in unforeseen circumstances. Ollie Bishton, Protection Adviser at Homeline Protect said “We always advise our clients to consider their position if they were unable to work for whatever reason. It’s worth

thinking about how you would cover your outgoings and maintain your lifestyle. Also, do you have adequate life insurance cover in place that would enable your family to cope financially should the very worst happen?” Homeline Protect is part of the Homeline Mortgages group, and works with mortgage and nonmortgage clients to advise them on protection cover. Ollie added, “Most of us are on a budget, and I often hear people say ‘can I afford it?’. Our response is ‘can you afford not to have it’? Like any form of insurance, you hope the need never arises to use it, but when

bad things happen it’s a huge relief to know you have adequate cover in place and the things that matter to you most, like your family and your home, are protected.” Income protection is an insurance policy that protects you against loss of income due to unemployment, illness or accident. At Homeline Protect they have access to all major insurance providers, including many of the main high street names that you would be familiar with. The benefits of working with Homeline Protect include the fact that they will do the research on

your behalf, and identify the most suitable policy on the market to match your needs. “We are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (565780) which gives you added reassurance that we are giving you the highest quality professional advice. At Homeline, we also provide our customers with a very high level of support; researching products, managing all the paperwork and making it as stress free as possible for you.” commented Ollie. “A meeting with us, and arranging protection will hopefully be a fairly seamless process and provide you with valuable peace of mind.”

a ROUTEpr and Events are all set for the return of Taste of the South 2018, a festival in its second year that will take place on 21st and 22nd July with a brandnew destination - Chapel Gate, near Bournemouth Airport. Jackie Phillipson Co-Founder of ROUTEpr and Taste of the South lets us in on what we can expect…. What is Taste of the South Festival? Taste of the South (TOTS) is a celebration of the South which showcases local food, drinks, artisan producers, award-winning chefs, with lot's going on for all the family to enjoy such as live music, children's activities and entertainment. We've been organising and curating the Taste of the South festival which returns for 2018 following the inaugural success of the first event last May. The event takes places at Chapel Gate which is located by Bournemouth Airport, on 21st and 22nd July and is set to be bigger and better than last year which attracted over 13,000 visitors! What new areas are in store for 2018? The 2018 festival will be featuring a new dedicated Health and Wellbeing area called the 'Zen Den' which will include outdoor yoga classes, healthy food and drink, talks and an array of vegan goodies and raw foods. We are also promoting sustainability and trying to reduce the use of plastic at the event too. We're inviting more children to attend the show, they can bring their parents, grandparents, and

enjoy our new Cub Corner area we've got storytelling, games, face painting and even the chance to grow their own plant or learn about seeds which they can then take home and grow Educating and teaching the youngsters is an important factor of the new area, introducing them to the world of food, where it comes from and giving them a chance to learn in a fun way. What chefs can we expect to see? When it comes to food there is an abundance of talent attending including MasterChef winner Shelina Permalloo, Charlotte White the Founder of Restoration Cake, Nick Evans the Head of the Rick Steins Cookery School in Padstow, Chris Wheeler from Stoke Park as well as many talented locally based Chefs such as Pete Murt from Rick Steins Sandbanks, Asian chef Sarah Ali Choudhury, Mark Hartstone La Fosse. There will be a focus on sustainable, artisanal food, both British and International. Why do you think food festivals are becoming more popular? People appreciate good food more and they truly care about where the produce they eat is coming from. Everyone loves to eat and buy locally produced products, which are handmade and crafted by creative individuals. Food based events are popular because they have something everybody can enjoy and when you get to watch chef demonstrations, learn to cook, taste new and exciting products, find out about the history of food, it’s such an enjoyable experience.

We have great producers and talent here and the food and drink industry is forever chang ing so there is always something new popping up. It's great to see so many businesses getting creative with food, at Taste of the South we get so excited when we receive an application from a unique food producer. Taste of the South is a relaxing, entertaining, funfilled, chilled event, there really is something for all the family! There will be local food and decadent drinks, unique products and handcrafted artisanal goods and much more. How can people get their hands on some tickets? Advance tickets are priced at just £4 for an adult ticket, and kids under 12 go for FREE. There is also FREE parking and tickets can be purchased from www.tastesouth.events/tickets. With the festival location so close to Bournemouth Airport it is easily accessible from the A338 as well as Wimborne, Ferndown, Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and surrounding areas. OUTDOOR LIVING

MEET; BH GARDEN SOLUTIONS A Professional Landscape Garden and Maintenance Business With little glimpses of sunshine finally breaking through our recently erratic weather spell, it’s time we started turning our home improvement intentions to more alfresco territories. With this in mind, we spoke with the “all-thingslandscaping” experts, Chris and Matt (Owners) at highly rated BH Garden Solutions to find out more about their unique approach and how they have been transforming gardens in the local area for over 7 years.

A PEOPLE BUSINESS With Chris and Matt–possibly two of the friendliest business owners ever—at the helm it’s clear to see why so much of their customer feedback reflects their friendly, knowledgeable and professional approach. Having worked together before in what feels like a previous lifetime— managing a Windsurfing Centre abroad—the dynamic duo has years of prior customer service experience, which has trickled down into their now established landscape gardening business.

When they launched the company back in 2011 it started off as just the two of them, but now Matt and Chris manage a team of 10 talented individuals all of whom abide by the same ethos of putting customer service at the heart of the business. “Although we now have a larger team with multiple projects, Chris and I are a constant point of contact to clients throughout the process”, says Matt.

DEDICATION, QUALITY & CARE Chris and Matt started their business doing primarily maintenance work, small landscaping projects, now seven years down the line Chris, Matt and the team take on an array

When asked what their company values are Matt explained, “Customer service, quality of work and communication. Communication is really important to us and we make a point of checking-in on projects on a daily basis. Ultimately, we want our clients and all involved, to be as informed as possible so that we create a high-level of trust, where they feel safe in the knowledge that they are getting exactly what they have asked for, with no hidden extras.”.

achieving this within your budget. But by breaking down the cost of each item we give clients the opportunity to dissect the project and make their own informed decisions, with the help and support of our knowledge and experience”, says Matt. If you would like to talk to BH Garden Solutions about any potential landscaping or garden maintenance project, if you have any questions or would just like to talk through some ideas, then don’t hesitate to get in touch for a friendly chat: t. 07919 370886 w. www.bhgardensolutions.co.uk e. info@bhgardensolutions.co.uk

THE BATH WORKS Quality Bathrooms, Affordable Prices Eighteen months ago, having been a key pin in countless plumbing projects in their other business over the last decade, Owners Ross and Steve put their heads together and decided to put all of their knowledge into their own independent bathroom showroom— with their signature friendly customer service, and the relevant expertise to back it up. So they did, and thus, The Bath Works was born.

PRODUCTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES At The Bath Works showroom, their team abides by a reserved approach to product promotion, leaving you to happily peruse the showroom free of looming sales advisors. That’s not to say that they’re not there to help—

far from it. Should you want some more information, they are only too happy to help, loaded with insightful product knowledge and of course the wisdom brought over from their past experience.

MODERN & TRADITIONAL From the moment you walk into the showroom, you’ve got that impactful wow-factor from the state-of-theart VitrA tub, situated beneath a striking copper pendant light and other contemporary trappings, but not everything in the showroom follows the ultra-modern suit. There’s something for everyone here, with the likes of the aforementioned modern styles right through to traditional Victorian-esk elegance and everything in-between.

We stock high quality products for all tiers of the market, including the latest innovation in bathroom furniture and appliances. – ROSS PAVEY, OWNER, THE BATH WORKS

There’s a difference between looking at something on your computer screen or in a magazine and actually seeing it in person. There are so many elements that affect how you may like a certain feature. At The Bath Works however, their mission is to provide you with bathroom furniture, fixtures and fittings that will last for years to come. If you have an up-coming project then get in touch with the team at The Bath Works, and let their friendly team help you shape your dream bathroom.

We try and make it [ordering a bathroom] more of a personal thing, rather than the customer feeling like just another number. – STEVE WARE, OWNER, THE BATH WORKS

customer-business relationships. It was this approach that they wanted to recreate over at The Bath Works showroom, along with instilling a sense of “going the extra mile” in all of the team. In going the extra mile, The Bath Works offer site visits for prospective bathroom projects, so that you can work with their advisors to bring your ideal vision to life, in the comfort of your own home. They also offer a free delivery to those within the BH postcode, as an extra gratitude for choosing to go local with them.

HIGH QUALITY AND AFFORDABLE As their tagline denotes, The Bath Works are all about offering “a quality bathroom at an affordable price”. Of course there are all different levels within the market, but it’s important to bear in mind that price does not always indicate quality, which is why The Bath Works are dedicated to offering the best, products at the most competitive price.

STAYCATION

PARADISE AT HOME In an effort to seek some R&R, I sat down with my significant other to discuss the possibility of a holiday. Like most, we have put in the graft, working day and night to pay for all of life’s little joys; the mortgage, bills, my princess of a dog’s specific dietary needs…we, like many, were in need of a break. So one night we sat together and explored website after website, each suggesting ideas and quickly dismissing them. Arguments breaking out over flight durations, destinations and how this whole holiday finding process was actually a reflection of a deep routed inability to commit (sorry, it got personal). The point is, sometimes booking a relaxing escape abroad is one of the most stressful experiences. Then it occurred to me, why am I so desperate to escape a part of the world that tons of holidaymakers would die to visit? Our neighbouring county Cornwall is widely regarding as one of the most beautiful parts of the country, offering breathtaking views, art, renowned

culinary haunts and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches – light bulb alert. It hit me, why don’t we swap our vacay, for a staycay? So, we decided to turn to the awesome team at ‘Beachspoke’ – luxury holiday home specialists – who helped us snag a stunning rental, located in the charming Cornish village of ‘Mousehole’. We arrived in Cornwall, a pinch weary from our 4-hour car journey, which by all standards was far more pleasurable (and scenic) than the less than alluring sight of the M3 on route to Gatwick. After a quick pit stop in Penzanse, where we stocked up on all the essentials – aka pasties, clotted cream and cider – we headed for our crashpad in Mousehole. After a blazing trail through winding country roads and narrow village streets we had arrived. We pulled up in the world’s most scenic car park, adjacent to the twinkling waterfront and headed towards the ‘Harbour Moon’ cottage.

Prior to our visit Olivia (our staycation guru/Beachspoke tour guide) had given us the code to a tiny security box that would unlock the key to the door. We guided the key into the lock and pushed open the door – deep breath – and WOW.

86

I stepped down into the kitchen come sitting room. Every inch of the space was adorned with style. The matte marble-esque worktops with chrome trimmings, the exposed stonewall, the driftwood sculptures; everything was gorgeous. Our exploration was heightened as we climbed the nautical rope-aided stairwell, only to discover the stunning boudoir above. We crept in, taking in every nook and cranny. To the left, bronze-flecked tiles flowed seemly from floor to wall, creating a contemporary wet-room, complete with walk in shower and a copper basin. White fluffy robes hung up tied with a bow, set the tone for what was to be a truly lavish layover. We continued into the room our excitement growing. A grand bed took pride and place centralised in the latter part of the room, it’s headboard the divide between bathroom and bedroom. I looked up to discover fishing nets woven between the

STAYCATION

Another day of adventure concluded and we began our usual holiday ritual of changing for the evening affair. Tonight we decided to visit the famous ‘2 Fore Street’. Owner and operator Joe (who actually took our booking that morning) served some of the best food I have ever had. The quality, flavour and evident passion spoke through the food and the service from their fantastic team heightening an already incredible experience. We returned to our pad for the last time. In an effort to savour as much of this wonderful property as we could, we perched in the living room enjoying the fresh scones and raspberry conserve we had picked up earlier that day. As our eyes grew heavy we decided to tuck ourselves into our opulent marshmallow bed once more. What a trip. Beachspoke have opened my eyes to a new kind of travel accommodation and a truly luxurious experience, all only hours away. Our property, ‘Harbour Moon’, is one of eight luxury properties in and around Cornwall, Devon and Cotswold that Beachspoke manage. Offering memorable stays in some of the most beautiful parts of the UK. white beams with a large copper pendant light suspended over the divan. A beam of light crept over the bed, inviting us to the furthest part of the room. I went to open the curtains before being distracted by the glass floor below me that looked out onto the living space below. The natural light coming from the open window below reminded me of the magnificence of seaside living. Finally I crept towards the rustic café-style shutters and pulled them apart, revealing the picturesque harbour view that had been hiding behind it. It was breathtaking. Excited to explore the town we threw on some fresh clothes and hit up the local haunts. Based on the recommendations in our Harbour Moon guidebook, we decided to pay a visit to the ‘Old Coastguard’, a popular restaurant on the cliff top overlooking the sea. To get to the restaurant, we strolled along the rockery and climbed a stone stairwell that disclosed a beautiful garden. We crept in through the double doors and snagged a table. The meal was delicious, complete with local gins and fresh seafood. Feeling full and fully inebriated we

made our way back to the cottage to enjoy our first night in that enormous bed – lights out. We awoke in the sun-filled room ready for a day of exploration, though the feeling of duck-feather pillows and a sumptuous mattress made it hard to actually leave. Adam – my partner whom I mentioned in the beginning – true to his heroic nature, gathered breakfast supplies (from the quaint local post office I might add). I tore myself away from bed and headed to the first place anyone on holiday goes: the fridge. I opened the door only to reveal a bottle of sparkling English wine, a half pint of milk and some eggs. What a lovely touch. I was at a beverage related crossroads; I had planned to assemble a coffee from the very lovely looking Nepresso machine, but now I had discovered the sparkling wine? Like anyone else in my position I weighed up the options and decided that having both was the only way forward. Gathering my drinks I headed for the bathroom. A sip, disrobe and another sip later, I was enjoying the marvellous sensation of a rainfall shower. I thought; if this is how the other half live, I want to trade sides.

COLOURFUL CASTAWAY ON CUBA There’s more to Cuba than Havana cigars, salsa shows and classic American cars. With Thomson doing direct flights to Santa Clara, Hannah Stephenson discovers a quieter but no less colourful side of this Caribbean island. The first thing that strikes me about Cuba is the colour - the pastel blues and fuchsia pinks of the old colonial buildings, the colourful cigarsmoking street characters carrying songbird cages or selling home-made paper cones filled with peanuts, the classic American cars with their polished chrome bumpers. And, oh, the music. It seems that around every corner and in every town square there’s a band playing salsa, son, or some other derivative, a brightly coloured bata drum being slapped or a guitar plucked to create those famous AfroCuban vibes. The rhythm just gets under your skin. RIGHT: Royalton, Cayo Santa BELOW: A stall in Trinidad

The colour doesn’t end there. I spy pink flamingos and red-headed turkey vultures en route to our destination of Cayo Santa Maria, an islet off the north coast of Cuba, connected to the mainland by a 48km causeway which slices through miles of shallow waters, shrublands and a winding network of mangroves on either side. Once at the resort, it’s the colour of the sea which takes my breath away. Walking along a small stretch of the virtually empty 10km beach, the water is not just blue, but rich, bright, show-stoppingly turquoise against an endless azure sky, a froth of gentle waves completing the truly brochure-style image. No camera filters needed here for Instagram or selfies. Everything you soak in really is as vivid as it seems.

96

Even the magnolia-hued sand, which feels like finely sifted flour underfoot,

doesn’t get hot in the sizzling sun, because it’s coral lime, which doesn’t absorb the heat. So there’s no ungainly hopping to the water if you forget your flip-flops. The beach is undoubtedly one of the main draws of Cayo Santa Maria, an island 16km long by 2km wide, which opened its first hotel in 2001 and is now home to 12 all-inclusive highend hotels, including the Royalton, a luscious five-star tropical haven, accented by royal palms, rose pink hibiscus and pink and white-flowered walkways. While Cuba’s capital Havana has developed rapidly over the last few years to keep pace with tourism, and the popular beach resort Varadero has become a hotel hotspot, Cayo Santa Maria is coming along at a slower pace, giving the visitor a much gentler introduction to this colourful country.

TRAVEL

Here, purple sea fans waft in the gentle current alongside brain coral, while electric blue damselfish, snappers and yellow-gold striped grunt dart in and out of leafy, stinging fire coral. Among the bigger fish, chunky groupers glide heavily around khaki green sea rods, which resemble oversized pipe cleaners, while steel grey barracuda lurk immobile between rocks, waiting to strike when an unsuspecting school of smaller fish swim past. There has been some coral bleaching, but when the Cold War ended and the Soviets ceased economic investment and trade in 1991, Cuba couldn’t afford fertilisers and pesticides, and so had to conduct organic farming, which had a beneficial effect on corals and reduced nutrient pollution.

There are other good diving opportunities in Cuba, the largest Caribbean island and about the size of the UK. The sprawling Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen), an underwater national park covering around 850 square miles off the south coast, is home to turtles, sharks and endangered corals, and is designated a marine protected area. So far, Cayo Santa Maria and nearby keys don’t seem to have suffered too much from the tourist footprint, further demonstrated when I explore the stunning nearby coastline of Cayo Ensenachos and Cobos on a catamaran, anchoring off deserted beaches where palm-sized salmoncoloured starfish and huge lobsterpink conch are the only things blocking my sandy path.

Yet access is becoming easier for UK residents. Thomson Airways has introduced direct Dreamliner flights from Manchester to Santa Clara airport, a two-hour drive away from where I’m staying, giving British visitors another point of entry and more scope for exploring the lesser known treasures of the island. These include the second largest coral reef in the world, making Cayo Santa Maria, in the Jardines del Rey archipelago - a group of keys earmarked for tourist development - a magnet for divers and snorkelers. Joining a dive boat from the stateowned Marina Gaviota at Cayo Las Brujas, (20 minutes away in the car), we head east for the Herradura dive site, where I’m instantly engulfed in an underwater garden of corals, aquatic plants and colourful tropical fish.

97

TRAVEL

Back at the hotel there’s a good range of activities, including yoga on the beach, kayaking or Hobie Cat sailing, followed by rum-slathered massages (yes, they do have them) in the hotel spa. Despite the 45-minute journey from the key to the mainland, you can’t go to Cuba without at least exploring the brilliant and broken colonial towns stuck in a Fifties timewarp, while trying to understand a communist system where a doctor earns the same as a dustman. Havana is six hours away from Cayo Santa Maria, so requires an overnight stay, but other old cities can be done in a day, including the relaxed, stylish, colonial splendour that is Trinidad in the south, three-and-a-half hours

RIGHT: Catamaran stop-off at El Megano beach BELOW: Yoga on the beach at Cayo Santa Maria

multi-coloured buildings try in vain to cling on to their former glory, and a brass band plays valiantly in the town square, determined that the show must go on. And then, we are whisked away to a rumba gathering, a Sunday lunchtime party involving plenty of rum, AfroCuban rhythms and hip-swivelling dancing. So much colour, in fact, that I need to put on my shades yet again.

away, and Santa Clara, the provincial capital where you can still see the bullet holes on the Santa Clara Libra Hotel, which bear the scars of the historic battle where guerilla Che Guevara led the revolution to triumph, toppling the Batista regime in 1959.

98

The closest city to the resort is Caibarien, just off the causeway, an old port where fisherman still endeavour to make a living catching crabs, oysters and sponges, crumbling

TRAVEL FACTS Hannah Stephenson was a guest of Thomson (www.thomson.co.uk; 0871 230 2555) who offers seven-night holidays to Cayo Santa Maria staying at Thomson’s Platinum 5T Royalton Cayo Santa Maria on an all-inclusive basis from £1,507 per person. Diary of Award Winning Sales and Letting Agent Move On Sharon Canning

HAVE YOU OVERPAID STAMP DUTY? According to HMRC, 15,700 buyers overpaid stamp duty alone last year. Were you one of those? If you own more than one property, a lot of people think they automatically will have to pay the extra 3%, however, this is not necessarily the case. If you are purchasing a property that will be your ‘principle place of residence’, then you will not need to pay the surcharge, no matter how many other properties you own. If you were purchasing a £500,000 property, the stamp duty on this would be £15,000, however, the extra 3% would double this to £30,000. If you move before selling your previous home, then you have up to 3 years to claim the extra 3% stamp duty back. Currently the normal stamp duty rates are • Up to £125,000 = 0% • £125,001 to £250,000 = 2% • £250.001 to £925,000 = 5% • £925,001 to £1.5m = 10% • Over £1.5m = 12% As you will see, adding an extra 3% will make a significant difference. Good news for first times buyers though… (A person is generally classified as a first-time-buyer if they’re purchasing their only or main residence and have never owned a freehold or have a leasehold interest in a residential property in the UK or abroad.) You will pay no Stamp Duty on properties worth up to £300,000 (a saving of up to £5,000). If the property is over £300,000 then the stamp duty above this will be apportioned. For example if the property is £450,000, the first £300,000 will be exempt and stamp duty will be applicable on £150,000.

LITTLE UPDATES, BIG DIFFERENCE Refreshing your home for summer With interior trends always on the move, it can be tricky to decorate our homes in the same vein of the latest seasonal style—I say repainting my monochromatic hallway pastel blue. So, if like me, you’re still paying the price for buying into the winter trends of 2017, here are just a few little ways that you can tweak your styling into a more summery tone, without brushing off the dust sheets. LEFT & RIGHT: Picture credit: Amara (Available from www.amara.com) BELOW: Nicoletti Monsieur Fabric Armchair, £895 (Available from www.furniturevillage.co.uk)

BLUE HUES AND GREENERY If you’re working with a fairly neutral backdrop (e.g. grey, white, off-white) then swapping your feature colours should be fairly easy. Pop any moodily coloured accessories aside for next winter, and swap them for pale blues and modern greens. It’s really a case of layering your accent colours—and having some fun doing so. A candle, photo frames, or even some new cushion covers are all great places to start incorporating those fresh colours, without going too OTT, or even as little as some new vivacious foliage. Speaking of which…

PLANTS, PLANTS, PLANTS Plants—real or faux—can instantly breathe new life into a space, quite literally in the case of the living cuttings. Scatter plenty of small, varying bouquets across your spaces in pots of different colours and textures. Arranging plants of varying heights is also a good idea, as it can add a level of understated drama. Which plants you choose is really up to you, though a few of our own personal favourites include Hydrangeas, Roses, Peonies and winding Pussy Willow branches.

STYLIST’S NOTE “You can never have too much greenery. Fill your rooms with energy-giving plants and flora for a fresh new look. If you can, try and opt for real plants, but if your schedule (or tolerance for the upkeep) won’t allow it, then be sure to invest in some high-quality faux flowers. A little investment now will save you picking up flakey petals later.” —Victoria Williams, Lifestyle Editor

WARM UP YOUR METALLICS With warmer weather comes the desire to warm up our interiors, and metals are a great way to easily implement small changes in this department. The insertion of gold or brass accessories can add that extra special element of warmth and extravagance; the trick is not going too overboard. Warm metals are bang on trend at the moment so finding them in your favourite home ware store shouldn’t be hard. Trinket boxes, trays and candles are perfect ways to incorporate them and widely available. If your budget has a little more give, you can even style it out with a large, or series of smaller, mirrors—the perfect decorative wall covering and moreover space enhancer!

INTERIORS

STYLIST’S NOTE “Before getting too eager to change everything, be sure your current accessories have truly outlived their purpose—after all, nearly everything can be patched up and given new life. Wash your cushion covers, shake the drapes, and give your furniture a fresh lick of paint or patch up before replacing everything.” —Victoria Williams, Lifestyle Editor

UP THE CONTRAST Adding in high-contrast black and white accents into otherwise neutral spaces is a great way to amplify the style without going too crazy with layers of different colours. The bathroom is a particularly great place to start, as the a-typically white furniture provide half of the contrast already–just add in some monochromatic accessories and you’re good to go. GAS OR CHARCOAL BARBECUES. WHICH IS BETTER?

INDUSTRIAL

With a long summer ahead of us, paying a visit to your local Haskins Garden Centre is one way to ensure you are summer ready. Haskins has outdoor furniture, BBQs, accessories and everything else you need to get ready for when the barbecue invites start to roll in. There’s no better way to spend summer than enjoying your garden and using it as a space for entertaining family and friends. When it comes to garden barbecues and eating outside, it’s a widely debated topic – which is better, gas or charcoal? The barbecue debate involves many factors, including budget, taste and speed of cooking.

COMMERCIAL

Charcoal barbecues tend to require more time to get going as you need time to ensure the embers are piping hot. Food cooked on a charcoal barbecue has a more distinctive taste because it is cooked slower, thus keeping the moisture in and keeping meat more succulent. Gas barbecues on the other hand allow you to start cooking almost immediately, so it’s better for those that are time poor. With the added bonus of offering regulated temperatures, gas barbecues tend to cook food more evenly. Haskins’ customer service team will be able to help and offer advice on which barbecue you’ll be better suited to, depending on requirements and taste preference. Some people prefer the hands-on experience of lighting charcoal, whereas others want convenience and adjustable heat sources. For those that prefer gas barbecues, Haskins has a wide selection, ranging from £330 to £1,200. Best-sellers include the Triton 3 Burner (£450) and the Triton 4 Burner (£500). For those that prefer charcoal barbecues, Haskins has a selection ranging from £36 to £230.

5 STEPS TO...

PLANTING LAST-MINUTE PATIO POTS THIS SUMMER Perk up your patio with some last-minute pots of colour So, summer’s here and you’ve left it late to get your summer patio plants in their pots, ready to add some colour to your outdoor space. Don’t despair, because leaving it late can have its advantages. You’re likely to get bedding bargains in garden centres keen to sell off their summer annuals and you’ll still be able to enjoy pots of colour throughout July and August and even into September if you look after them and choose wisely. Late-summer blooms such as dahlias and lilies can help make summer containers last into autumn, so

consider putting a few of them in to prolong your season. Here’s our step-by-step guide to planting up some summer colour for your patio, even if it’s late in the season...

1

CHECK THAT ANNUALS AREN’T POT-BOUND When choosing bedding, try to avoid plants which have loads of roots sticking out of the bottom of the pot, which indicate the plants have been in there for far too long and can make it tricky to remove the plants from their containers.

PA Photo/Hannah Stephenson

3

STRUCTURE YOUR DISPLAY Put your main plant in first, which should be taller than the trailers which go around it and will spill over the side of the pot. The tall plant will form the framework for the rest of the display. Firm it in with more compost. Fill around the edges with smaller plants such as trailing lobelia, bacopa and verbena, adding compost as you go. Often people will use a miniature conifer as the tall aspect of the display, but you can just as easily use upright geraniums or osteospermums in smaller containers or more exotic plants like spiky cordylines or exotic-looking cannas if you have bigger pots and want a more tropical-looking display.

4

FEED YOUR PLANTS Add granular feed to the compost mix which should keep it going through summer and beyond - there are many formulas on the market, which help reduce the need for feeding the plant with liquid feed throughout the summer. Many composts also contain water-retaining and feeding elements.

5

PA Photo/Hannah Stephenson

KEEP THEM WELL WATERED Water newly-planted plants in well. If it’s dry, you will need to water the plants every day and in prolonged dry spells, twice a day. Do it early morning or at dusk to reduce evaporation. Remember that the smaller the pot you use, the more watering the plants will need because there will be limited compost to retain moisture. Go for the largest pots you have to help avoid being a slave to the watering can or hosepipe.

2

124

MAKE SURE PLANTS HAVE GOOD DRAINAGE Line the base of pots with drainage holes with crocks (bits of broken pot) or some other material, which will allow free drainage because most patio plants won’t enjoy sitting in water and wet roots. I usually use the polystyrene I bought the bedding plants in because it’s lighter than crocks if you are going to be moving the pots around. Then fill the pot with multi-purpose compost to around three-quarters full, adding water-retaining crystals to the mix.

You’re not too late for colour - but don’t delay any longer. PA Photo/thinkstockphotos

based at our Parley workshop will make it their mission, for you to get the most out of your outdoor space for the best price possible.

The concept of Reformed Plastics was born nearly 20 years ago from the curiosity of its founder. Being an engineer by profession, and having had his own UPVC Windows business, and also being the practical and inquisitive person that he is, one day he decided to find out what was really happening to the waste that people were so freely throwing away. His research and interest lead him to focus on plastics, how it can be recycled and what it could be reused for. He discovered that the USA and a few European countries had been recycling and remanufacturing waste plastics into alternative timber products for many years, instead of throwing it all into landfill and the ocean! WHAT CAN THE PLASTIC BE USED FOR? The manufactured plastic has many practical and very useful properties. The main base of our products are in the form of planks and posts which can be used on their own for garden fences, both low for front gardens and high for side and back fences for instance, along road sides and around fields and paddocks just to name a few. It is also possible to produce a number of other products out of our plastic, such as picnic tables. These would vary in size, suitable for adults and children. Park benches, outdoor tables, square or rectangular plant boxes, decking and seating... the list is endless.

MOTORING NEWS The latest news on all things motoring. By Nick Fletcher

VOLVO V60 DEBUT

128

The new Volvo V60 premium mid-size estate is now available to order in the UK, with prices starting at £31,810 for the D3 Momentum manual version. It brings much of the cutting-edge connectivity, entertainment and safety technology from the larger 90 series cars – the S90 saloon, V90 estate and XC90 SUV. A choice of three 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engines is initially offered – D3 and D4 diesels, and a T5 petrol. Two petrol-electric plug-in Twin Engine hybrids and a second petrol engine are likely to be available within the next 12 months. The D3, D4 and T5 V60s are all front-wheel drive. Both diesel engines are available with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox, while the petrol comes with the eight-speed automatic as standard. The D3 offers 150hp, combined fuel consumption of up to 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions from just 117g/km. The D4 has 190hp, combined fuel consumption of up to 64.0mpg and CO2 emissions also from just 117g/ km. The 250hp T5’s numbers are from 43.7mpg and 150g/ km respectively Every V60 is equipped with LED headlights, a powered tailgate, two-zone climate control with ‘CleanZone’ airquality system, a 12.3-inch driver’s information display and rear parking sensors.

ROAD TEST: NISSAN QASHQAI TEKNA+ When first launched in 2007, the Nissan Qashqai was one of the crossover pioneers, paving the way for the welter of SUV models now dominating the new car market, writes NICK FLETCHER. Re-vamped a few months ago, the latest Qashqai is still able to compete with newcomers to the sector thanks to its blend of outstanding driving dynamics, spacious cabin and cool looks. There are petrol and diesel options, with prices starting at £19,300, but a top-spec version such as my Tekna+ test model, laden with extra kit and with a 1.6 litre turbo-petrol engine, costs £29,995. You get a lot for the money – highlights include premium BOSE sound system, sports seats, leather trim, panoramic glass roof, front, rear and side cameras, alloy wheels, park assist, front and rear parking sensors, touch-screen entertainment and navigation system, connectiveity features, and a raft of safety kit including blind spot warning, moving object detection and lane departure warning. It also has LED lights, chrome detailing and rear privacy glass.

The 1.6 litre 163 hp petrol engine has a 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds, top speed of 124 mph, emissions of 134 g/km and fuel economy of 48.7 mpg combined. On the road, the Qashqai is smooth and refined, helped by revised suspension providing a more composed ride. The precise steering and slick manual gearshift give the driver a feeling of complete control. Externally, Qashqai has revised sharper-looking front and rear styling and inside, upgraded materials give the cabin a smarter appearance. The dashboard layout is well designed for easy use and there is good occupant space front and rear and lots of oddment stowage places. The 410 litre boot, while not largest in the class, easily accommodates normal needs, and can be boosted to 1,569 litres by folding the rear seats. The Qashqai competes in a vastly enlarged crossover/ SUV sector which includes the likes of the Peugeot 3008, SEAT Ateca and the Skoda Karoq, but the Sunderland-built Nissan holds enough ace cards to ensure it stays firmly with the pack leaders.

MERCEDES-AMG ROADSTER The new Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster is now available to order, with prices starting at £126,730. It features AMG’s handbuilt 4.0-litre ‘hot V’ V8 biturbo petrol engine with an output of 522 hp (46 hp more than the AMG GT). It can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 192 mph. It delivers 24.6 mpg and emits 262 g/km of CO2. Standard equipment includes an AMG performance exhaust system; Airscarf; 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch at the rear); Nappa leather upholstery; Active Air Control system; AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping; LED high performance headlights; Comand Online; and an electrically extending rear spoiler. The three-layer fabric roof is available in a choice of three colours at no extra cost: black; beige or red. An AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed gearbox comes as standard on all AMG GT models. The £3,195 Premium equipment line adds Keyless-Go package; Burmester surround sound system; reversing camera; illuminated door sills with ‘AMG’ lettering; Parking Assist Parktronic; and Mirror package.

The Driving Assistance package costs £1,695 and includes Blind Spot Assist; Lane Keeping Assist; Distance Pilot Distronic; and Pre-Safe. The AMG Dynamic Plus package – available for £1,795 – features dynamic engine and transmission mounts; firmer and specifically tuned suspension. AMG high performance ceramic brakes are optionally available for £5,995.

FORD MUSTANG UPGRADED

ROAD TEST: MAZDA MX-5 RF The Mazda MX-5 RF is a head-turning version of its soft-top stable-mate, offering a powered hardtop instead of the usual fabric roof and providing better security and more refinement, writes NICK FLETCHER. The RF certainly attracts attention with its supercar-style buttress rear fins and most people who asked me about it guessed its price at around £35,000. In fact it is more than £10,000 cheaper! Mazda designers deserve much praise for such arresting styling - and ununusally, the folding roof doesn’t reduce the available boot space which at 130 litres was small anyway. Other than the hardtop feature, the RF is essentially the same as the standard MX-5, which in almost 30 years of production has become the two-seater sports car icon. The RF is priced from £22,496 in 131 hp 1.5 litre form though the version I tested had the 2.0 litre 158 hp engine and in entry-level SEL Nav trim is priced at £23,795. Top speed is 134 mph, the 0-60 mph time a crisp 7.4 seconds. Fuel consumption is 40.9 mpg combined and emissions 161 g/km.

SE L Nav models come with climate and cruise control, power windows, remote central locking, 16-inch alloys, LED headlamps, a 7-inch touchscreen and connected infotainment system with DAB and navigation. The wrap-around cabin is a cosy fit, with minimal stowage space - no door pockets, no glove-box, just a small lockable compartment behind the seats. But none of this matters much as the car attracts carefree buyers who will fling a small holdall into the boot and zoom off for a fun weekend in the countryside, at the coast or even on the Continent! Mazda has upgraded the cabin materials and together with the new styling, the RF has more kudos and a more up-market appearance. Underway, it is quick and nimble and with the roof closed, more quiet and refined. Handling is assured, ride quality decent by sports car standards. Overall the RF provides fun driving with an engaging dash of panache which some of its more expensive rivals may find hard to match.

Ford has announced upgrades for the new Mustang, enhancing performance and driving experience, comfort and convenience, and with more personalisation options. Priced from £36,645 in 2.3-litre EcoBoost form, this Mustang model is for the first time offered with new Active Valve Performance Exhaust technology – previously offered only for Mustang 5.0-litre V8 models (from £41,745), enabling drivers to adjust the intensity of their vehicle’s exhaust note. New rev-matching technology first unveiled for the exclusive Ford Mustang Bullitt special edition model will deliver smoother downshifts as standard for new Mustang 5.0-litre V8 models with six-speed manual transmission. A new B&O PLAY audio system option delivers 1000 watts of power through 12 speakers for a premium audio experience, and new colours include vintage-inspired Velocity Blue and dynamic Need for Green.

NEW SUZUKI SWIFT SPORT The all-new Suzuki Swift Sport goes on sale in the UK from June 1st, with a launch price of £16,499 until the end of that month, a discount of £1,500. Powered by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, it has emissions of 125g/km and combined fuel consumption of 50.4 mpg. It features six airbags, auto air conditioning, DAB Radio, privacy glass, LED daytime running lights and Bluetooth fitted as standard. Specification also includes smartphone link display audio, rear view camera, front fog lamps, Navigation, LED headlamps, polished 17-inch alloy wheels, rear electric windows, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Prevention. As Suzuki’s flagship sports model, the handling capabilities found in previous Swift Sport models have been further refined in the new model, with greater driving stability, optimised roll rigidity, and improved dynamic response. Suspension roll angle has also been significantly reduced compared with the previous model.

KOCHHAR’S QUICK CURRIES Atul Kochhar is turning his attention from Michelinstarred meals to making curries in minutes. He tells Kate Whiting he learned to cook to get out of cleaning and how his son inspires his recipes Kochhar, 47, was awarded a second Michelin star for his own restaurant, Benares. Despite all the acclaim, however, he turned his attention to slightly more simple fare in his book, 30 Minute Curries. His book is movingly dedicated to his son (“my best friend”), 11-year-old Arjun, who inspires Kochhar to be inventive with food. “Arjun has strong likes and dislikes... One of his pet hates is broccoli, so I keep making it in different

ways. Last weekend, I made chickpea burgers, so I put broccoli in there and told him if he can find it then he can get some Lego. He couldn’t trace it.” He’s thrilled that Brits have long had a love affair with Indian food that is growing all the time: “I look at someone like Tom Kerridge, a quintessentially British chef, but he uses more coriander powder and cumin powder than I would ever use in my food. It’s heart-warming, it’s good to see that it’s opening up. I love it.” Try out some of Kochhar’s quick curries... By Kate Whiting, Press Association

Onion Paste

Prawn And Coconut Curry (Narkol Chengri Moli)

(Makes about 600g)

Ingredients

(Serves 4)

2tbsp vegetable oil 500g onions, coarsely chopped 100g (about 6tbsp) ginger-garlic paste (see below) 1tsp sea salt

Method Heat the oil over a medium-high heat in a large saute or frying pan that is ideally nonstick. Add the onions, the ginger-garlic paste and salt, and stir frequently for 25 minutes, or until the onions are browned. Watch carefully towards the end of cooking so the mixture doesn’t catch and burn, which can happen very quickly. If they do burn, you’ll have to throw them out and start over - there isn’t any way to rescue them. Transfer the mixture to a food processor while it’s still warm and blitz to a fine paste. Leave to cool completely, then store in a covered container in the fridge for up to four weeks, or freeze for up to three months.

PA Photo/Mike Cooper

Ingredients 500g raw peeled tiger prawns 3 green cardamom pods Fresh coriander leaves 1tbsp ghee or vegetable oil 2 cloves 1 dried bay leaf 1 cinnamon stick 1tbsp onion paste (see right) 1/2tsp red chilli powder, or to taste 1/4tsp ground turmeric 250ml coconut milk Sea salt

Method Assemble all the ingredients and equipment before you begin. You need a large saute or frying pan with a lid. Remove and discard the PA Photo/Quadrille prawn tails, if necessary. 130

Lightly crush the cardamom pods to loosen the seeds. Rinse and chop enough coriander leaves to make about one tablespoon. Melt the ghee over a medium-high heat in the pan. Add the cardamom pods and the seeds, the cloves, bay leaf and cinnamon stick, and stir until the spices crackle. Add the onion paste and stir it into the oil for 30 seconds. Add the chilli powder and turmeric and stir for 30 seconds to cook the spices. Watch closely so they do not burn.

Ginger-Garlic Paste (Makes about 225g)

Ingredients 2 large garlic heads, 75g each, separated into cloves and peeled 150g fresh ginger, peeled weight, coarsely chopped 2tbsp water

Method

Reduce the heat to medium and add the prawns and coconut milk. Season with salt and continue stirring for 30 seconds, or until the prawns turn pink on both sides. Take care not to over-cook the prawns.

Put the garlic cloves, ginger and water in a food processor fitted with a chopping blade and blitz, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary, until a paste forms.

Adjust the seasoning with salt, if necessary, and stir in the chopped coriander just before serving.

This keeps in a covered container in the fridge for up to four weeks, or can be frozen for up to three months.

Goan Spinach And Lentils (Goa Daal Palak) (Serves 4 as a sharing dish)

PA Photo/Mike Cooper

Ingredients

Method

50g toor lentils (toor daal) 1 green chilli 1 small onion 1 tomato 2tbsp vegetable oil 1tsp black mustard seeds 200g baby spinach leaves 3tbsp frozen grated coconut, plus extra to garnish Sea salt

Bring a large covered saucepan of water to the boil and assemble all the ingredients and other equipment before you begin. You also need a sieve or colander, and a wok or a large saute or frying pan. Rinse the lentils in the sieve with cold running water, then add them to the boiling water. Return the water to the boil and leave the lentils uncovered for 20 minutes, or until they are tender, but still holding their shape.

a pinch of salt, and continue stirring until the onion is softened, but not coloured. Turn the heat down and leave, uncovered and stirring occasionally, until the lentils have finished cooking. Rinse the spinach and shake off the excess water.

Remove the stalk from the green chilli, if necessary, then slice the chilli lengthways. Peel, quarter and thinly slice the onion. Halve and slice the tomato.

Drain the lentils, then stir them into the saute pan. Add the spinach and frozen coconut, season with salt and stir-fry until the spinach wilts. When you take the coconut out of the freezer, set aside a little extra for the garnish.

Heat the vegetable oil over a medium-high heat in the wok. Add the mustard seeds and stir until they pop. Add the green chilli, onion and tomato with

Adjust the seasoning with salt, if necessary. Sprinkle with a little extra coconut just before serving - it will thaw in the residual heat. 131

Lamb With Cardamom & Yogurt (Lamb Dhaniwal Korma) (Serves 4)

PA Photo/Mike Cooper

132

Ingredients

Method

600g boneless lamb rump or neck fillet 2.5cm piece of fresh ginger 6 green cardamom pods 3 garlic cloves 1 1/2tbsp vegetable oil 4 cloves 3tbsp onion paste (see previous pages) 1tbsp ground coriander 1tsp red chilli powder, or to taste 1tsp garam masala 1tsp ground turmeric 1/4tsp ground black pepper 250ml water, plus an extra 2tsp Small pinch of saffron threads 2tbsp Greek-style yogurt Fresh coriander leaves 1/2 a lemon Sea salt

Assemble all the ingredients and equipment before you begin. You need a large heavy-based, non-stick saucepan with a lid. Cut the lamb into bite-sized pieces, trimming and discarding any fat. Peel and finely chop the ginger. Lightly crush the cardamom pods to release the seeds. Peel and thinly slice the garlic cloves. Heat the vegetable oil over a medium-high heat in the saucepan. Add the cardamom pods with the seeds and the cloves and stir until they crackle. Add the ginger and garlic and stir to flavour the oil, making sure the garlic doesn’t over-brown. Add the onion paste and continue stirring for 30 seconds until it begins to ‘loosen’, again watching closely so it doesn’t burn. Turn the heat to very low and stir in the ground coriander, chilli powder, garam masala, turmeric and black pepper, and continue stirring for 30 seconds-one minute to cook the spices.

Stir in the lamb, increase the heat to high and stir until it is browned on all sides and coated in the spice mixture. It’s important to watch closely so nothing burns at this point. Stir in 250ml of the water and the saffron. Season with salt and bring to the boil, stirring. Reduce the heat, cover the pan and leave the lamb to simmer for 10 minutes, or until it is tender. Top up the liquid, if necessary, so the lamb is always submerged. Meanwhile, mix the yogurt and remaining two teaspoons of water together. Rinse and finely chop enough coriander leaves to make about two tablespoons. Squeeze two teaspoons of lemon juice. When the lamb is tender, stir the yogurt mixture into the pan. Add the lemon juice and adjust the seasoning with salt, if necessary, then stir in the chopped coriander to serve.

Breakfast Pasties (Makes 6 large pasties)

Ingredients

Method

For the pastry: 125g butter (room temperature) 125g lard (room temperature) 500g plain flour

Put the flour in a bowl and rub in the butter and lard. This technique involves rubbing the butter and lard with the flour between you finger tips so that they combine. When completed, your bowl will be a pile of golden crumbs. Pour in some cold water a little at a time and mix into the crumbs until you form a ball of dough. Don’t knead or handle the dough too much. Wrap the dough in cling film or pop in a sandwich bag and place in the fridge for 30 minutes. This step allows the gluten in the flour to relax before you shape it.

For the filling: 8 sausages 1 packet streaky bacon 1 small carton of button mushrooms 1 onion 1 tin of baked beans A little oil for frying 1 egg for an egg wash

Whilst the dough is in the fridge, you can use this time to prepare the filling. Cut the onion into small chunks and quarter the button mushrooms. Fry these together in a frying pan over a medium heat with a little oil (or butter if you prefer), until they have softened and coloured a little. Place into a bowl. Cut the bacon into 1cm pieces (I use a pair of scissors for ease) and fry in a little oil until crispy. Add to the onion and mushroom. Take off the skins from the sausages and pull into pieces. Fry the sausage pieces in a little oil until cooked. Add to the onion, mushroom and bacon pieces and give them a good mix together. At this stage, you can leave to cool, cover with some cling film and fridge until the morning. The

138

pastry will also keep well overnight. This allows you to get a lot or the prep done ahead of time for an easier morning. To make the pasties - preheat the oven to 200/gas 6/fan 180. Line 2 flat trays with a piece of baking parchment. Liberally flour your work surface and rolling pin. Divide your ball of pastry into 6 pieces. Roll out each piece of pastry into a rough circle shape, about half a cm thick and 15cm in diameter (you don’t have to be at all accurate here these measurements are just a guide). Place a good size dollop of the fried mixture in the centre of the pastry and add a large, tablespoon sized amount of baked beans on top (straight from the can). Fold the pastry in half and crimp the edges together so that the mixture can’t get out (forming a crescent pasty shape). Place on the tray. Repeat for the remaining 5 pasties. Crack the egg into a small dish and beat quickly. Brush the beaten egg over the pasties. Bake for 20-30 mins. When baked, the finished pasties will look a lovely golden brown all over. After 20 minutes, if you have used 2 trays, they may need to be swapped over in the oven to give them all an even bake.

JUNE OFFER: NON-SURGICAL EYELIFT - FIBROBLAST, FROM £150* ASK THE EXPERT ABOUT...

WHAT IS HIGH INTENSITY FOCUSED ULTRASOUND (HIFU)? HIFU is a remarkable breakthrough in technology, offering a noninvasive alternative to a surgical facelift. For many, this is a MUST have treatment option, and the ONLY FDA approved treatment with a specific intent for improving lines and wrinkles on the face and décolleté, penetrating to depths previously only possible with surgery. Using the power of Ultrasound HIFU safely lifts and tightens the skin. Ultrasound is a form of energy that is significantly different to others, such as light (used in IPL), or indeed laser or electrical (i.e. radio frequency) energy. Unlike other energy waves, HIFU protects the skin surface, whilst precisely penetrating deep into the sub-layers of skin, treating beyond the dermis and foundation layers, where structural weakening starts. It’s because of this accuracy that the surface skin remains undamaged, so you needn’t worry about any extreme red faces or recovery time. Tissue at the target point is heated to 65°C, thermal heat is created with the skin tissue creating both spaced ‘wounds’ and cellular friction— which in turn promotes healing, immediately contracts collagen and stimulates a rapid production of new cells. Over the next 90-180 days, the wound-healing response stimulates long-term tissue and leads to further lifting and tightening, with results that can last years. It also helps to improve the tone and the features of your face such as your eyes, cheeks, mouth and chin, making it a viable alternative to Botox, with the benefit of being able to maintain facial expression. If you have undergone a surgical facelift however, this is equally an excellent option post-surgery to maintain the lift and treat blood stasis, scarring, and numbness. For more information about this incredible non-surgical facelift, get in touch with the friendly team at Health & Beauty Bournemouth. ALSO AVAILABLE: HIFU - Non Surgical Facelift (HIFU/The latest technology | Therapeutic massages | 3D eyebrows | Skin rejuvenation (IPL, Radio Frequency) | Acne and pigmentation treatments | Semi permanent make up | Acid peeling (AHA 5%, 15%, 40% & 70% available) | Microneediling (demaroller and dermapen) | Mesotherapy | Microdermabrasion | Non surgical fat removal | Botox | Derma fillers *Terms & conditions apply. FACING YOUR FEARS F.E.A.R. = FALSE EVIDENCE APPEARING REAL The immediate effect of fear is to shut us down and contract our energy inward. Everyone knows fear. It can come in an instant and throw you into chaos, yet it can also save your life. It can eat away at us like a parasite in the brain, robbing us of our rest times, stealing our sleep and whittling away our well-being. We fret over finances, worry about work, obsess about others and yet the serenity and peace we are seeking never comes by following the path into the deep dark labyrinth of the mind where fear would have us follow. I’m referring to those dreadful ‘what ifs?’ when our brain gets hold of one fearful thought and runs with it, projecting an instant future of only doom, gloom and disaster. Fear is a natural response to physical danger, but it can also be selfcreated, such as the fear of failure, being out of control, being different or being lonely. There is a fear of the future and of death. You may fear love because you fear being rejected; fear being generous because you fear you will not have enough; fear sharing your thoughts or feelings in case you appear wrong; and fear trusting because you are dominated by self-doubt and insecurity. Come and find out how Reiki and Life Guidance can help you to face your fears and let them go - so that you can move forward in your life with positivity and free from fear.

BENEFITS OF MARTIAL ARTS FOR YOUR CHILD

At Fitter Than Fit, we believe that a child’s total well being, both psychological and physical, can be strengthened simultaneously. While the physical aspects of exercise and Martial Arts training improves your child’s general health, it also improves emotional wellbeing with increased selfesteem and self-confidence, as well as decreased tension, stress, anxiety and depression. With that, here are just a few of the benefits of our Martial Arts programmes for your child:

1

SELF DEFENCE The instructors at Fitter Than Fit have trained for many years to make sure everything we teach is reality based. With that being said, your child may still be in the developmental stage of their life and will focus only on the basics of our Martial Arts curriculum. Basic Techniques include: proper exercise form, punching, kicking, blocking and evasion techniques.

3

SELF-CONTROL AND GOOD DECISION MAKING Self-control refers to the training that one gives one’s self to accomplish a certain task or to adopt a particular pattern of behaviour, even though one is unfocused or would rather be doing something else. For example, when your child has learned to listen to mum and dad, or to pay attention in class listening to the teacher instead of talking to his friend next to him, he has demonstrated the ability to selfcontrol, while making the good decision to do so. At Fitter Than Fit, as both parents and instructors, we work on this skill set every single day—instilling respect for everyone.

2

FOCUSING AND LISTENING We know focus plays a key role in the mindset of children, who have limited attention spans at this stage in their life. Our programme will build their attention span, teaching your child to focus on the task at hand while improving their listening and reaction skills at the same time. As a result, your child will excel in physical activity, improve their ability to stay focused and become an astute listener in the dojo, at home and in school.

4

TEAMWORK AND POSITIVE SOCIAL INTERACTION Teamwork is necessary for any young child to develop. It is at this stage in their life that they develop an understanding and a confidence in their ability to work with others. At Fitter Than Fit, our activity-based curriculum and teamwork-oriented environment, develops character and teaches your child that the more we work together in the dojo, at home and at school, the more we get done.

5

BALANCE AND POSTURE For many 3-6 year olds, one of the skillsets that is often overlooked, but needs constant work and attention, is balance and posture—basic skills necessary for almost any activity. Poor posture leads to cramped organs, improper breathing and a whole host of other unhealthy bodily expressions. At Fitter Than Fit, our Little Dragons programme helps to build strong balance, healthy postures and balanced movement through the use of age appropriate forms and drills—often presented as an engaging game to help developing students improve these fundamental skills For more information contact: T.
