Presidential Thoughts Mandy Payne, President, BCTC Businesses see the Green with specialist Chamber sub-group. To many businesses “going green” can seem like a difficult concept. However, with the help of the Green Knowledge Network (GKN) – the specialist sub-group of BCTC – Chamber President Mandy Payne explains how it’s pretty easy to join the green revolution. The GKN was formed in 2010 by a dynamic group of Dorset-based green technology businesses in conjunction with the Chamber, and now after four years it is a thriving subgroup of the chamber, helping businesses across Bournemouth reduce their carbon emissions and energy bills alike. Each member business of the GKN offers products, services and advice to help businesses go green and, alongside this, the GKN also works with local businesses, providing an educational platform through seminars, workshops and events to help them further understand the ways and benefits of adopting good green practises. Moving forward, I expect that the GKN will work even more collaboratively, ensuring best practise, and delivering world-class solutions, whilst acting as an invaluable resource which the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce can offer both our members as well as all other businesses around Bournemouth. The Mayor’s Walkabout

The Mayor’s Walkabout Kinson & Winton The Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Rod Cooper, recently toured the trading districts of Kinson and Winton. I would like to thank you for organising my recent walkabouts in Charminster, Kinson and Winton.

My regret is that I did not undertake these walkabouts earlier, so that not only could I have promoted some of the businesses during the year but also I would have been able to have seen more districts.

To say I enjoyed them would be an understatement. I learnt much about the areas and was quite amazed at what the town has to offer and which I did not already know about.

I would like to thank to everyone who took time out to accompany me and to those who showed me their businesses.

Round Table Children’s Wish are looking for new partners! Round Table Children’s Wish is a registered, charitable company dedicated to granting ‘handcrafted’ wishes for children and young people with life threatening illnesses.

Wish example: Charlie-Jane asked to have her very own playhouse Charlie-Jane, had recently completed her treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when she asked us for her very own playhouse. After everything she had gone through she just wanted somewhere she could play with her friends and be an everyday little girl again.

We pride ourselves on our supportive and caring approach to the granting of wishes. We do our best to make sure that every wish has been ‘handcrafted’ in its own special way so that it meets the needs of each, individual child, young person and their wider family circumstances. No two families are the same so why should the wishes be!

At Round Table Children’s Wish we offer children and young people a wish that has been specifically handcrafted to ensure it is a memorable and very personal experience.

Round Table Children’s Wish has a dedicated team who work hard to ensure we are able to deliver the most personalised wish possible; we aim to provide a wish that creates long – lasting memories for all involved at a time when a wish is most needed.

We don’t worry if wish requests are something ‘a little’ different – we do what we can to make the wish happen!

Over the years we have granted many, many wishes to some amazing children and young people. We aim to reach as many children as possible so that they have the chance to experience the joy of a wish at a time when it is most needed.

Our dedicated Wish Coordinator works with each family to make sure that all the details are taken care of – it’s that simple!

We work in partnership with Round Tables across Britain and Ireland to make a wish happen. The Round Table family have a passion for making a difference within communities and at some stage of the process; they will have played a part in making the wish happen!

New social network ‘Yooblr.com’ launched to fight UK’s loneliness epidemic Yooblr, a website that enables people to make friends and form small social groups with those who share their interests launched recently at Hamworthy Library. Yooblr is completely free and described by its creators as a socialisation tool for reallife that can help beat the UK’s widespread loneliness problem.

Yooblr differs from other social networks in that, rather than just nurturing online relationships, it encourages people to get out and meet others face-to-face. Users can find people with common interests who live nearby and then invite them to events taking place locally. As a result, people across Dorset and Hampshire are forming friendships, reviving their lives and enjoying a variety of new experiences.

In a speech last year, Health Secretary Mr Hunt highlighted the “problem of loneliness that in our busy lives we have utterly failed to confront as a society”. He said it is a source of “national shame” that as many as 800,000 people in England are “chronically lonely”. Kyrsty Fairchild created the concept of Yooblr while managing her own domiciliary care business, Poole-based Fairhope, she says: “Every day I see people of all ages who, through no fault of their own, are feeling increasingly lonely and isolated in their own homes. They may have people around them, but all they want is company, conversation and a friend to share interests and experiences with.

Yooblr’s Dorset-based creator, Kyrsty Fairchild, believes this new social network, which aims to solve one of the nation’s biggest social issues, could one day rival Facebook or Twitter. She realised that people needed a new way of creating real-life social networks, replacing the roles that neighbours and local communities once played. British adults of all ages are leading increasingly isolated lives, often

“Britain is collectively suffering from this unseen problem and we want to remove the stigma of being lonely. It’s far easier talking to someone you don’t know

By looking at other people’s profiles on Yooblr, users can decide if they share enough interests with someone before making contact. “We believe Yooblr could be as big as Twitter or Facebook and it all starts in Dorset. We want to help people build the confidence to socialise and feel empowered to get out of the house and enjoy life once again. We firmly believe it’s never too late to start living the life you want.” Sue Wills, Library Service Manager, Borough of Poole says: “We’re delighted to be part of the launch. Our libraries are seen as safe and inclusive spaces that welcome everyone. With our Computer Buddies programme we help people who aren’t so computer savvy to get online. They now have another reason to use the Internet - to increase their social circles and enjoy new experiences.”

There are many positive examples in Dorset of how simply enabling people to socialise can revive lives and help eradicate loneliness. An older couple had moved to Wimborne to start a new life enjoying retirement. Sadly, the husband passed away before they could make any friends leaving his widow living alone and feeling isolated. For two years she became increasing lonely despite looking for activities and groups she could join. She eventually came across the Brendoncare-run Riverside Club, which hosts regular activities and was originally started with a small contribution from Dorset Partnership for Older People Programme. She has since quickly made friends and says: “Even shopping in Wimborne is more pleasurable than before because I often bump into people from the Club. Friendships have deepened and I often go out for a coffee with friends. I now buy and sell cards at the Club and I’m responsible for sending birthday cards to all of the members to help them feel that they are important members.

Business Profile: Amanda Burger Intulo Health Sports and Remedial Massage, one of the South’s leading deep tissue massage therapists. Having served as official massage therapist for AFC Bournemouth, Amanda has experience dealing with patients as varied as sports people to the general public. This month we chat to Amanda about her history and what her job entails and how her business can be of benefit to you.

I absolutely loved working with the boys, they taught me alot about football and they certainly changed my perception of footballers. Our Cherries are so down to earth and I’d like to think we built up a mutual respect towards each other.

When did you start your business?

Is it harder to massage men than women with the muscle mass and density?

I graduated from The London School of Sports Massage in August 2011 and went self employed in the September of 2011. I had been working in the property industry for 10 years so it was a big change for me. Why did you choose to work in this field? I studied for a fitness diploma in 2005 as a foundation certification to become a spin instructor and whilst studying the theory side of the diploma I developed a fascination for Anatomy and Physiology and realised how much I loved it, and I thought, hey I’m good at this I need to do something with it. What was the studying and training like and what did it cover? The course with LSSM was very hands on and practical because there’s only one way to learn how to massage and that’s to get stuck in and do it. We had an intensive 12 months which included theory work, case studies, hands on practical assessments and as part of the course we had to do 100 treatments with signed off paper work to prove that we’d completed them. I loved it because I pretty much started building my client base whilst I was studying because it takes time to build a business and it’s important to build a relationship with people in this business. The most difficult part was trying to find different people who’d be willing to have a free massage. Tell us about your work you did at AFC Bournemouth? When I qualified I contacted Steve Hard the Head Physio at AFC and volunteered to improve my skills and I wanted to gain experience working with professional athletes. I desperately wanted to work with Steve and observe how he worked with the footballers and it was

It depends entirely on the individuals sport to be honest. There are plenty of women that I massage that are hard core gym enthusiasts or power lifters so they can be pretty hard to work on too. However, most of the time it can be more difficult to massage a man. The footballers in particular were very hard work, their bodies are like steel and of late I’ve started working with a local rugby team and their legs and upper bodies are no different. What are the benefits of deep tissue and sports massage? Gosh there are so many. The misconception is that sports massage is only for sports people, however, sports massage is actually deep tissue massage and it’s a combination of the different massage techniques that we use that the body responds to. For example I’ll use trigger point therapy on muscles where I can feel there is a “knot” or a trigger point as we call it, or I’ll use soft tissue release or muscle energy techniques if there is an imbalance in the structure of the muscles, for instance where one muscle is shorter than the other. I have worked with people who suffer with headaches, fibromyalgia, stroke victims to professional footballers. Massage is an ancient Chinese practice it has been practised for more than 5000 years and it is used for helping the body to regenerate, revive it’s power and to heal itself. It also helps to release fear and tension so it has alot of physiological and psychological benefits too.

I said earlier, I don’t only treat sporty people, most of my clients sit at a desk all day and then pop into the gym and hammer their bodies on the treadmill or with extremely heavy weights after being seated in a position where the body in naturally overcompensating. It’s so important for our bodies to function naturally and in order for us to do that we have to strengthen certain areas and more often than not, far too much emphasis is being put on strengthening core! What impact does posture have on problems in the neck and back? Our bodies are not designed to be in a seated position, we’re actually meant to be in a natural squat position. If you think back to cave man days, you didn’t see them sat on a log round the campfire, they were always squatting. A baby learns to squat before they walk and that is our natural posture. We are supposed to squat when we go to the toilet, being seated on a loo causes all sorts of internal problems such as IBS, constipation and lower back pain. Woman are meant to give birth in a squatting position, that’s how the pelvis is designed. Of course I can’t expect all my clients to squat at their computers all day but I am able to teach them how to strengthen up certain muscle groups so that their bodies aren’t overworking by keeping them in a bad postural position all day.

What is the most common ailment you see in clinic?

Bournemouth’s new mayor is Southbourne’s Chris Mayne Bournemouth’s next mayor will be West Southbourne councillor Chris Mayne. The Conservative councillor was the overwhelming choice of the Tory-dominated council, ahead of Labour candidate Dennis Gritt. He has been credited with raising thousands of pounds for charity, has chaired the Friends of Fisherman’s Walk and has played cricket at Dean Park for more than 50 years.

The Morris Lane stand at the Bournemouth Care Show in March was the focus of attention for show visitors keen to try their hand at winning an ipad mini, by simply answering general knowledge questions on a new touch screen TV. Over 200 people took part, but it was Lisa Hopkins from Apex Care Recruitment in Romsey who came out on top. Mike Clark from Morris Lane presented Lisa with her prize.

Cllr Mayne was first elected as a Liberal Democrat in 2003 but lost his seat when the Conservatives returned to power four years later. He stood as an independent in a byelection before returning to the council as a Tory in 2011. Cllr John Adams moved that the council choose him as mayor, saying he would be a “proud ambassador for Bournemouth”. He said Cllr Mayne was an all-round cricketer, a musician, and former head chorister at St Peter’s Church. He had organised events for the last three mayors and raised “thousands of pounds for the mayor’s charities”.

Cllr Mayne, whose family were in the council chamber to see him selected, said his term of office would be “a very challenging year”. He added: “I look forward to serving the town and

to giving Bournemouth 100 per cent.” He paid tribute to the opposition’s choice of candidate, Cllr Gritt, adding: “Hopefully, one day Dennis might get the mayoralty.” Labour group leader Cllr Ben Grower had proposed Cllr Gritt, who he said had served a total of 17 years on the council and was “by far the longest serving member whose name is before you today”. After heavily losing the vote, Cllr Gritt joked: “I demand a recount.” He wished the mayorelect “a highly successful and enjoyable year”. The current mayor, Cllr Rod Cooper, was chosen to be deputy mayor when Cllr Mayne becomes the first citizen in May.

Much more than Just shutters Plantation shutters will enhance the appearance and style of your house but will also provide you with so much more: Shutters have long been the window treatment of choice because they are incredibly functional and can provide great kerb appeal. Shutters with adjustable louvers offer so much more in terms of privacy, insulation, ventilation and light control than most other solutions. What’s more they are low maintenance and unlike curtains wont harbour dust, so good for allergy sufferers too!. When the louvres are open the room will appear bigger and brighter as without the curtains much more light reaches the corners and a lot of light is reflected from the louvres onto the ceiling. Louvre Size: The majority of shutters are produced in white, off-whites or creams. These neutral colours give maximum light, sit in the background and look as if they should be there rather than being an over strong feature that just shouts at you. Louvre Colour: We would recommend you consider the 89mm and the 64mm louvre probably in that order, the exception would be if you have a cottage style window, then the 64mm louvre may be more in keeping. Another option growing in popularity is the large elegant 114mm louvre, this looks simply stunning with large panels in large windows especially those with beautiful views. Materials: Here you have a very wide range of options, however, the company you choose should be able to give you good honest advice for your particular window. Definitely do not discount a well made coated MDF shutter backed by a long guarantee. This product can be a world beater despite what some national companies that do not have it in their range will say. Often you just do not need to pay more, you will not see any benefit. Be very careful with entry level timber products these are made to a price and over time this really shows. For shutters to fit arches, those that need an extended range of colours and finishes or wood grains then it just has to be timber, look for a product with mortice and tenon joints, a company with a long and successful track record and they will last for fifteen to twenty years, Maintenance: Shutters are easily cleaned using a feather duster, damp sponge/soft cloth or run a vacuum cleaner over them.

How long from order will it take to get my shutters? Shutters are custom manufactured to fit individual openings and are ready for installation in 7 to 8 weeks from the date of the order and receipt of the deposit. For special shaped shutters, please allow 8 – 10 weeks from date of order. How much light do shutters block out when closed? Both our louvre shutters and solid panel shutters are manufactured with rebated edges to minimise light lines around the perimeter of the shutters making the shutters ideal for bedrooms. However, a 100% light block out is not possible with the louvre shutters as the nature of the louvres is to allow light through. Even so, when closed, less light is visible than a blind due to the styles and framework surrounding the shutters.

First drive: Range Rover Sport Sdv8 Land Rover again raises the premium SUV bar with its latest offering the V8 diesel-powered Range Rover Sport. It can’t have escaped you that Land Rover is doing rather well at the moment. Although only one half of the Jaguar-Land Rover equation, the 4x4 side of the business is selling the lion’s share of the product. The compact entry-level Evoque SUV burst onto the scene with all the fanfare and adoration of a major celebrity, and the trickle down effect - or should that be ‘trickle up’ - had been felt across the firm’s recently refreshed range. One obvious recipient of the Evoque’s magic has been the second generation Range Rover Sport. Visual similarities to the rock star of the range are no coincidence, while Land Rover’s continued focus on reducing weight and boosting the level of technology in its cars continues with this more streamlined Sport. What’s new: Lighter, more economical and offering a more engaging on-road driving experience than the car it replaces, alongside Land Rover’s long established off-road credentials, this new generation also boasts more cabin space plus the option of a family-friendly third row of seats. Just like the latest Range Rover, the Sport adopts its maker’s next-gen Terrain Response system, which includes an auto mode clever enough to sense changes in terrain and change the engine, gearbox and suspension settings accordingly. Engine options: Although endowed with a perfectly good range of engines - six-cylinder diesel and eight-pot supercharged petrol units - the final piece of the performance jigsaw has now slotted into place. If petrol isn’t your thing but you still want to feel a shove in your back, there’s now a hot diesel option in the form of a 4.4-litre V8, 334 horsepower lump. On paper, consumption and emission rise slightly as you’d expect, but the trade-off is a welcome increased turn of speed and more mid-range grunt.

The real drive: With a predictable embarrassment of riches in both power and torque departments, this hot V8 diesel Sport is the consummate all-rounder. Ample low down torque is complimented by superb throttle sensitivity, making it ideal not just for inching over treacherous obstacles but also breezing past slower traffic on wide, sweeping A-roads. Despite the potential for higher corner entry speeds when in diesel V8 guise, bodyroll is expertly kept in check and the Sport’s ride is rarely compromised by its large but stylish alloy wheels. For a car destined to spend much of its time on the road, this should be music to any prospective owner’s ears. One thing that hasn’t changed with the inclusion of a more powerful diesel motor, is the Sport’s living quarters. The cabin remains a plush and inviting environment for occupants fore and aft, while the fascia’s clean, simple lines put the cluttered driving environments of many rivals to shame. In V8 diesel guise, the Range Rover Sport is as close to a no-compromise luxury SUV for the real world as you can get. It might look stately but its footprint remains a manageable one, while its expertly honed driving dynamics allow you to fully exploit the diesel V8’s welcome extra power with supreme confidence.

We all know regular exercise is important, but finding time to do it isn’t always easy, especially if you have a long commute, work irregular shift patterns or have children, or other dependants, to look after. The answer, though, or at least part of it, could lie where you least expect it, in the very place you think is stopping you getting fit; the office. Because many of us spend the bulk of our days at work, which for some, can mean hours slouched over a desk or slumping into a chair, with the tea and coffee run the only time you actually leave your seat. Certainly, the latest survey from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) showed men and women average six or more hours of total sedentary time every day, with men more likely to cite work commitments as a barrier to increasing their physical activity, while lack of leisure time was the barrier most cited by women. But incorporating some exercise into your workday is a great way of not impacting on your time after work, while also helping ‘undo’ some of the damage of a sedentary desk job. An added bonus is it how it promotes the management of stress, improves your general mental health and reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. Dr Gavin Sandercock, a senior lecturer in clinical physiology and director of cardiac rehabilitation at the University of Essex, says: “Sitting down all day is bad, so anything else can only be better. Standing up and disturbing the body’s rest makes the energy systems work and blood flow. It’s about breaking up this ‘sitting time’ with some form of movement.” Not everybody has the luxury of a full one-hour lunch break every day, and your place of work might be miles from a gym. But where there’s a will there’s a way, and even a short break can be turned into a wellbeing-booster if you’re determined. Jog on If you are short on cash, or the gym just doesn’t rock your boat (or there isn’t one nearby), then how about getting outside in the fresh air for a run? If you are close to a park then jog around it, otherwise use the streets (and people) as your playground. Things like

benches and steps can be used to spice up your workout and break up the run with various other exercises, like push-ups. Even a gentle, 15-minute jog can burn more than 100 calories, so you don’t have to be super-fit to reap the benefits, while a faster, 30-minute run could burn four times this amount. Interval running has greater fatburning benefits than a slow, steady pace and involves alternating sprinting and jogging. If you don’t have a watch, use lampposts to trigger your speed, or put your headphones in and run faster when the beat kicks in. Get your colleagues involved; it’s more fun and will motivate you more - even on those rainy Mondays.

Walk the walk We do it every day to get from A to B, yet this simple movement has a range of benefits including releasing feel-good endorphins and improving health and fitness - plus you don’t even need to get changed or showered afterwards. All you need is suitable footwear and off you go. Walking can be an ideal activity for people with injuries or health problems, which might make more vigorous workouts unsuitable, but while it’s gentle, you still getting your blood pumping. Walking at a fast pace burns twice as many calories as a simple stroll, so how much you push yourself is down to you. No matter how time-starved you are, there’s always time for a quick walk around the block and you’ll feel loads better for it. Class act If you are luckily enough to work close to a gym, and don’t mind dishing out on the fees, then fast classes are a popular quick fitness fix for workers, with many offering speedy classes as short as 20 minutes. Classes will vary but tend to focus on HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Anser Amado, a Tabata instructor at Fitness First, highlights the benefits: “Why go on the treadmill for an hour, when you can achieve better results in four minutes? This intense workout makes your body burn calories for up to 12 hours.” HIIT classes are based on keeping your whole body moving with minimal rest periods which means you burn fat fast, increase your cardiovascular fitness and build strength in next to no time. But be prepared to sweat; you’ll need to factor in time for a quick shower!

Club together If you work for a big organisation, then why not ask HR what their policies are for a having a trainer or instructor coming to your building to do subsidised classes? If a few of your colleagues are keen, you could be onto a winner. You could organise a Zumba class, yoga or pilates, or aerobics - all great workouts that could fit into a lunch break. Exercise enhances productivity and getting colleagues interacting can help promote team work - so your bosses will benefit too. Plus, being fit and active can reduce your chances of getting unwell, which could mean less days lost to sickness. It’s win-win!

What is it? A four-minute intense workout, Tabata’s been clinically proven to be the most effective way of burning calories for longer while also hugely increasing fitness. The basic principle is 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times. That’s about the same time as it takes to make a cup of tea! It is named after Japanese research scientists Professor Izumi Tabata, whose clinical trials have shown that after a Tabata session you can burn more calories for up to 12 hours. The four minutes can consist of the same exercise or a variety of exercises - the more you keep moving, the better.

Stretch it out If you only get very short breaks and getting outdoors is simply not an option, don’t let that be a barrier for taking care of yourself. Even if you only have 15 minutes, find a quiet room and do some gentle stretching exercises. Yoga and Pilates increase flexibility, core stability and strength - and also get your blood pumping around your body. The breathing also benefits your overall wellbeing. There are exercises on YouTube, as well as apps that guide you through the movements. This is great option if you have a high-pressured job or sit at a desk all day and are prone to back problems.

What’s it like? The 20-minute class consisted of a 10-minute warm-up, four-minute Tabata and a six-minute cool down. We did two ‘killer’ exercises, which vary with each class and are a combination of bodyweight movements. There’s also a ‘kinder’ option to make the workout easier if you’re struggling. Even though the trainer was driving the pace, it’s down to you how hard you push, but obviously, the harder you go, the more you will reap the benefits. Tabata is not for the faint-hearted and offers an exciting and quick way of exercising with a bunch of like-minded people of all fitness levels.

Local creatives Think. Create. Do The results of the 3rd consecutive annual Dorset-wide creative economy census are in. And once again they have revealed some interesting trends. For those who don’t know, each January a survey is distributed amongst the advertising, design, digital, video, film, publishing and public relations agencies based across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole. The results that come in are then analysed and extrapolated and the findings are publicly shared, offering a comprehensive overview of this valuable sector. There are over 450 creative agencies across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole and their average size is 7 employees (according to recent Design Council research, the average size nationally is 5). Based on those figures, for a county with a population of approximately 710,000, this means that one in almost every 225 people works in the creative economy in some capacity. That’s quite an impressive statistic and one that would be hard for any other town, city or county in the UK to compete with. Perhaps that’s why The Times recently listed Bournemouth as one of the Top 30 places in the UK to live, saying it was “transforming from a retiree town to a coastal Silicon Valley.” Of those 450 businesses, almost 10% of them turnover in excess of £1million pounds – that’s another impressive statistic too. That figure has grown four-fold since 2012, so it’s not

surprising that 92% felt that business-wise, last year was better (or about the same) than the year before.

Lifesize Dinosaurs At Castlepoint Facinate Shoppers Five Lifesize model Dinosaurs are set to fascinate visitors young and old at Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park. A 20ft Postosuchus, 10ft Giant Raptor, 5ft Velociraptor, 6ft Triceratops, and a 7ft Stegosaurus arrived on 4th April and will be staying until the 20th April. Over the Easter holidays there will be activities including a competition to find the baby dinosaurs on the fun Dino Hunt Trail, Dino Crafts where children can make their own fossil or face mask, and interactive play sessions. An animated Velociraptor will also stalk and scare shoppers on Saturday 19 April.

The event, which for 2014 has been renamed the Children’s Festival as part of Bournemouth’s First World War Centenary commemorations*, takes place in Meyrick Park on Thursday 24 July from 10am to 4pm.

Quantum leap of faith for Wessex Cancer Trust Bournemouth based, Quantum Recruitment, is pledging its support for local charity, Wessex Cancer Trust. Amanda Grant, an employee at Quantum Recruitment, will be taking part in a tandem parachute jump at Salisbury Airfield to raise funds for the charity. The BIC - Hotel and Catering Show The local hospitality sector was celebrated at the BIC on 11th & 12th March, highlighting the innovations and creative industry players, at the annual Hotel and Catering Show. Over the two day event, those in the trade were invited to visit exhibitors as diverse as local cheese and crisp manufacturers, to POS systems engineers and service solution providers. President of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce, Mandy Payne, visited exhibitors at the show and commented: “It really is fantastic that this event attracts such a wide cross section of interest. Local hoteliers and restaurateurs benefit hugely from meeting new suppliers and discovering new innovations for them to adapt in their venues – it was wonderful to see the BAHA stand so busy too, with lots of BAHA and BCTC members showing their interest.” The show also featured industry

Encouraging Bournemouth’s Creative Fast Lane With Award winning blockbusters such as Avatar and Gravity highlighting the amazing technical creative skills coming out of Bournemouth University and the Arts University Bournemouth, a group of Arts University Bournemouth Film students are using crowdfunding to help them produce a great short film to be screened at the British Film Institute in July this year. We have been supporting a group of Arts University Bournemouth students who are making a film as part of their final year studies. They are making a short film called “Wait For Me”, set in the First World War. The film is certainly being professionally made, with one objective being to give students direct experience in all aspects of film making, allowing students to focus on aspects such as producing, directing, cinematography, design, the list goes on. James Kirby is the Producer for this movie and we asked him what challenges the group are facing and what would encourage graduating film students to setup in business here. James gave us some great feedback: Top of James’s list was strong ties with local film facilities/ companies plus opportunities to network with local businesses and other parties. James added that while University life automatically provides that network, graduates would struggle to make those connections themselves. Put another way, graduates probably move to other areas in the UK that may offer such a network. James goes on: “I’d say similar

things would attract me to be in Bournemouth; knowing that ties to prominent creative institutions were there and ready, Framestore included! If Bournemouth was a place that attracted guest speakers that would be a huge bonus also. I’d say the best sessions at university were those when professionals came in to impart their knowledge. Perhaps talks and seminars could be given in Bournemouth event spaces such as the Library or the BIC. As well as this, filmmaking is an expensive business however I have had little experience with huge budgets seeing as our university provides us a lot of kit. Perhaps ties to kit stores and discounted rates through various suppliers would promote Bournemouth’s film industry. Crowdfunding was a great chance for me to gain funds for my project but admittedly a big percentage came from the crew’s family and friends. I have tried my hardest to spread the word of the project in the local area but having so many different county/borough/district/art councils was a bit mind bending. Perhaps a singular, local organisation who could source all this information from would be of benefit. I know national ones exist but I have realised there is money available locally however it is a real strain to try all the various sources during preproduction. Also, I understand that from the ‘outside world’ filmmaking is a cool, sexy idea and is very desirable, which promotes curiosity and intrigue. To use and present this to local businesses as well as the wider crowd funding community would be great but often requires a personal touch. I enjoyed the speed of crowd funding on the internet but speaking with contributors face-to-face is really rewarding.

I touched on it above but graduating students on the AUB Film Production unanimously agree that most of our knowledge is passed on by professionals, as well as other students. Year to year we pass on our knowledge and experience which just makes for better filmmakers. We do have great facilities and kit at the University and the tutors are knowledgeable and willing to help but skills and knowledge learnt from those ‘above us’ is invaluable. I have learnt so much from previous students, at University and out on various projects, and I feel I am now in a position to do the same for those with less experience. Working closely with ‘younger’ students has helped me feel I’ve contributed to this pattern and am bettering their skills and filmmaking abilities. We do study in different specialisms but branching out to different areas of filmmaking has helped me become a better filmmaker and I appreciate it when others do the same and am willing to help.” James added that there are some excellent filming locations within driving distance of Bournemouth and that really attracts film makers. James actually started by explaining what attracted him

to study film at Bournemouth University and it was clear that the beach lifestyle offered by Bournemouth together with the high quality of courses at the University were deciding factors. We see similarities between James’s reasons for studying here and the reasons why Film companies could prefer to set up here: If Bournemouth can deliver on a great quality of (beach!) life AND provide a leading support structure for film makers, we could really be onto something here.

Thinus Delport Encourages Academy Rugby Teams

Coastal BID announces major new research project

Some of the top sporting students at Bournemouth’s Bishop of Winchester Academy were treated to a full training session with Rugby union wing and fullback player Thinus Delport.

The Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) has announced it will be undertaking, in conjunction with the National Coastal Tourism Academy (NCTA), a major new research project aimed at helping retailers in Boscombe, Southbourne and Westbourne.

The Cheltenham based player who made his senior debut in 1997 on the Springboks’ European Tour, joined the Academy’s Head of PE Nick McGill on the pitch to give practical demonstrations and advice prior to a question and answer session as part of his role as a Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor.

“I love the opportunity to help inspire young players and it’s great that the Academy is encouraging pupils to take part in the sport that I love,” said Thinus. Nick McGill says that with large numbers of students from all years playing the sport, a 3 year contract with the Rugby Football Union has been signed to support a long term development plan to engage more rugby participation at the Academy and benefit from extensive coaching in PE lessons from some of the county’s top rugby coaches.

The Coastal BID and NCTA are combining forces to find out more about who shops in Bournemouth’s Coastal Villages. They have commissioned market leader FSP to undertake a combination of desk-based research alongside face to face interviews in Westbourne, Southbourne and Boscombe. The results will give a detailed insight into why people are visiting these locations, how much they spend, what type of shops they use – and perhaps as importantly where else people who live in these locations choose to shop. The first set of 600 interviews per location will be carried out at the end of April, with a follow-up series of a further 300 interviews during the main 2014 holiday season. This split will also help to identify the impact that visitors staying in Bournemouth have on the coastal villages.

Providing Care with Hair This month marked the opening of a brand new hair salon at Lewis-Manning Hospice which, with the help of MWAH (Makeup Wigs And Hair) in Westbourne, which aims to support local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Lewis-Manning Hospice opened the doors of a new in-house salon based at their state-of-theart facility in Sandbanks, Poole on Thursday 3rd April 2014. Since November staff and nurses have been trained by specialists in Hair Loss Systems from MWAH. MWAH, headed up with Simone Thomas, a hair specialist, who has previously worked in Film, TV and Modelling and suffered twice from hair loss before the age of 30 due to cancer. This made Simone acutely aware of the added strains hair loss can have on a person suffering with illness. With Simone’s personal background she found a natural accord with the work of Lewis-Manning Hospice who offer specialist palliative nursing care to local people living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

“When I discovered the work of those at Lewis Manning Hospice I was sincerely touched by everything they do. From my personal experiences I can say how important support can be. Help with what may seem the smallest things can make a huge difference. Considering this I felt determined to do whatever I could to support Lewis Manning Hospice”, said Simone from MWAH. Together MWAH and Lewis-Manning Hospice decided to create a salon inside the hospice which will focus on giving beauty therapy and advice to those struggling to cope with hair loss. To get the salon running Simone and MWAH have donated salon equipment such as a clinically safe, wipe-clean chair for the salon along with an array of other equipment. Simone will also be providing luxurious branded Wella products alongside Moroccan treatment oils, shampoos and conditioners. MWAH will also continue to offer on-going training for new and current nurses.

Commenting on the opening of the Salon, Sally Goodenough from Lewis-Manning Hospice said: “Words cannot do justice to how grateful we are of the work Simone and everyone at MWAH have put in to get this salon up and running. The Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) has appointed Anna Chamberlain to a new role, supportig its 760 businesses.

“Who cares?!” There were many topical discussions and conversations taking place on the opening day of the Care Show Bournemouth 2014. The annual event is dedicated to providing education, products and services for those running organisations responsible for service users in the care sector and was attended by over 170 exhibiting companies and many hundreds of visitors. Among those at the event were Bournemouth based care industry recruitment company, Quantum Recruitment and their longstanding client, Rob Cousins, Director of Affinity Care Homes, also based in Bournemouth. Managing partner at Quantum Recruitment, Jacqueline Entwistle said, “It has been really interesting chatting with Rob today about the industry’s biggest issue which is the recruitment of quality staff. The private sector is currently experiencing unprecedented growth in the building of new residential and nursing homes due to an ever increasing ageing population. This is in turn causing a gap in care providers being able to find the numbers of quality staff that they require.” Jacqueline continued, “A lot of care homes are struggling with high staff turnover, unsuitable staff and often rely too heavily on agency staff.” Rob commented, “We pride ourselves at Affinity Care Homes on our level of staff retention but that is only because we work very closely with Quantum Recruitment in ensuring that we recruit quality staff who want to work for us, staff who are trainable and actually suit our business. So who are we, and importantly what do we do? Economic Development units, do a myriad of things relating to strengthening, managing and assisting in projects that strengthen and grow the economy, and we can only do that if we work with partners, and businesses. Whether running a business as a sole trader, or someone who employs fifty people plus, it can still be a lonely place, and who do you turn to try and find an honest answer to a business question, or problem? Well certainly in the past your first thought may not have been Bournemouth Council, but in recent years this has really changed, a vibrant economy for our area, is a main priority for our Council and our Leader, John Beesley, our Chief Executive and Directors have invested in making a team who really understand business and wants to help our business community. Much of our work comes from our wider role of working with Dorset “LEP”, Local Enterprise Partnerships. These partnerships were set up at the request of the Government, they have a local board, led by a private sector business person chair, working across Dorset, developing and setting out a strategic holistic economic plan for the whole of the County. Working together, local private and public sector organisations are best placed to decide the direction for economic stability and growth, localism at its best!. Fundraising drama helps local hospice The members of Wimborne Drama theatre company have kindly made a £1000 donation to LewisManning Hospice, who support local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Entrepreneurs inspired at Talbot Heath School Bournemouth businesses were treated to a morning of inspiration and blue sky thinking when they attended a Business Seminar and Networking event at Talbot Heath School.. Bournemouth’s answer to Richard Branson, Jack Romero, had a captivated audience as he told his compelling story of how he fled Beirut in the Civil War in 1979 with just £90 to his name and how nearly 30 years later sold his own airline for a staggering £30million. Jack went on to share his secrets to business success and advised the audience of entrepreneurs, “There is always a solution to challenges in business. Determination is key, always try and think outside the box and have a clear vision of where you want your business to be. ” Samantha Acton, the award winning owner of Bournemouth based ‘Domestic Angels’ said, “Listening to Jack today has totally reinforced my own personal beliefs on how one should conduct a business, staying true to one’s personal values which will allow you and your business to grow!”

The tournament is the brainchild of Ryan Woolfenden, owner of independent estate agents Leader & Co in Ashley Cross, and he has teamed up with Lewis-Manning to host the event at Bournemouth’s Pelhams Park on June 1st from 10am – 2pm. The tournament is open to teams of all ages and will replicate the fixtures of the actual World Cup taking place in Brazil in June, with each team representing a country pulled out of a hat. Ryan said, “Having been given a tour of Lewis-Manning not so long ago, I was extremely keen to help, having seen first hand the excellent care they provide. Being an avid football fan and with the World Cup looming this seemed like a great way of creating a fun day for people to participate in and also raise some money for a very worthwhile cause.”

Mrs Angharad Hollloway, Head at Talbot Heath School added, “It has been fabulous to host today’s event. It’s been a huge success. The School runs its own entrepreneurial programme and we are looking forward to welcoming many more Bournemouth businesses to our school in the future.”

Ryan was very keen to do something for Lewis-Manning, so when he mentioned the idea of doing a 5-A-Side tournament based on this year’s World Cup, we thought it was a brilliant idea.

We were then delighted that Harry Redknapp, who has supported the hospice over the years, was able to take time off from his very hectic end of season schedule to pop in and give us some kind words of encouragement. I suspect there will be a few teams entering the tournament who wouldn’t mind having him in their dug-out on the day!” Harry, who has previously managed clubs including AFC Bournemouth, West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham, is a big supporter of many local charities, including Lewis-Manning Hospice, which is based near his Sandbanks home and offers free care to local people living with cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses. Harry Redknapp said, “I’m pleased to have been asked to help launch this charity 5-A-Side World Cup 2014 Tournament to raise funds for LewisManning Hospice. I would encourage any local teams to get involved and give it a go. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy some grass-roots football while supporting this very worthwhile cause. Thanks to estate agents Leader & Co. for organising the event and putting such an effort in to follow the format of this year’s World Cup. From 6 April 2014 the Government has introduced an allowance of up to £2,000 per year for many employers to be offset against their Class 1 National Insurance contributions. How lovely to be talking about paying less to the Government! The detailed rules have now been issued. The legislation confirming the introduction of this allowance is contained in the National Insurance Contributions Act 2014. The £2,000 allowance is sufficient to cover the employer’s Class 1 liability of one employee earning approximately £22,000 or four employees being paid the National Minimum Wage. Can all employers claim the allowance? There are rules to limit the allowance to a total of £2,000 where there are ‘connected’ employers. For example two companies are connected with each other if one controls the other. Also, public authorities and those organisations carrying out public nature functions (eg NHS, GPs, etc) are excluded unless they are charities.

Are there any exceptions?

– N otice must be given to HMRC of the PAYE scheme for which the allowance will be claimed and that will continue for that tax year and subsequent ones.

There are some Class 1 NIC liabilities that can’t be offset by the allowance. These include those arising from:

– F or the majority who use payroll software there will be a box to tick or failing that, the HMRC Basic PAYE Tools package may be used.

– A person who is employed for purposes connected with the employer’s personal, family or household affairs. This would include nannies, gardeners and care support workers;

– O nce notice has been given, the allowance must be deducted from qualifying payments as they occur in the tax year. The employer’s payment of PAYE and NIC will be reduced each month, to the extent it includes the Class 1 NIC liability, until the £2,000 limit has been reached.

– E mployer contributions deemed to arise under IR35 for personal service companies. What if the employer’s Class 1 NIC liability is less than £2,000? The allowance is limited to the Class 1 NIC liabilities if they are less than £2,000. It is not deductible against other PAYE liabilities or the NIC you’ve deducted from your employees.

We thought that we would leave it to the experts and let our wonderful server choose for us…moments later, (and I really do mean moments with their quick and attentive service); we were presented with a plethora of tantalising dishes. The 24-hour Ribs were melting in the mouth, gorgeously tender, and fell from the bone. Their Spicy Spring Roll was packed with hot Thai flavours; they say that chilli has a strange effect on people – though you might want to stop, it’s just too tasty, sort of a pain versus pleasure dilemma. Koh’s Own Chicken Satay left us wanting to know all of their secrets, and the Thai Sliced Crispy Beef had us succumbing to its moorishness.

If the food wasn’t enough, next came the cocktails. A personal favourite of ours would be the Mai Thai: Fresh lime flavours, packed with punchy rum! But Koh, like everything they do, have taken it to the next level, with the addition of fresh chilli: all coming together to make a delicious concoction!

Yellows invest £1.4 million in new luxury buses Yellow Buses (YB) has taken delivery of a further 11 StreetLite Max low-floor single-deckers at a cost of £1.4 million. The 11.5 metre luxury buses, which boast leather seats and woodeffect floors, can carry up to 68 passengers. Their arrival brings the number of new vehicles acquired by the Bournemouth-based company in the last six years to 48, costing more than £5 million. One of the new fleet is already operating on the Yellows’ A1 shuttle bus route serving Bournemouth Airport. The other ten will service YB’s 1a route linking Bournemouth and Somerford from April 6. Until then they will be used across the Yellows’ network.

Jenni Wilkinson, Head of Marketing, said Yellow Buses had purchased eight StreetLites in 2013 and they were proving popular with passengers. She added: “With 15 million customers a year we need vehicles which can offer a high quality standard as well as to be able to manoeuvre quickly and easily. These buses fit the bill perfectly.” Yellow Buses operates a fleet of 137 buses and 18 coaches with a staff of 450. It carries more than 15m passengers a year with its vehicles operating nearly five million miles across the Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and East Dorset area. The Yellows are part of RATP Group, the world’s fifth largest public transport provider
