Presidential Thoughts

Presidential Thoughts Mandy Payne, President, BCTC Welcome to this month’s magazine. As we enter the exciting summer period that fuels business in our town, I thought it pertinent to highlight what causes we’re giving back to for the next year. After much deliberation, I am pleased to announce, on behalf Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, my three chosen charities as President for 2014 are: BHCA, Lewis Manning Hospice and Wessex Cancer Trust. BCHA is an organisation which gives support with housing, learning and living for those without a home throughout the South West, while Lewis Manning is a voluntary Hospice in Poole which provides specialist care to over six hundred local people suffering from cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses. Our final choice, Wessex Cancer, provides grants to individuals suffering with cancer across Dorset to help them cope with the increased living costs they can be left with. It is always a hard choice to choose three charities to support for the year as there are so many local and national charities which do phenomenal work – as evident by the work done by the charities on our own Charity Forum here at BCTC. The charity forum was formed to help to grow relationships between business and charities – we have over 46 charity members at this time. Great relationships can assist both ways – fund raising, skills sharing and marketing benefits have been identified – to name but a few. This year I, along with the other members of the Chamber, decided to choose three charities which are local to our area and specifically provide a crucial service to local residents. I strongly feel that without these charities many people would be lost. As our chosen charities we will aim to support them across all our events in the upcoming year. Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce will be hosting a variety of events for local trade and commercial companies throughout the year and we welcome all those who would like to be supported or are interested in joining. Wishing you a successful summer of trading.

Dorset LEP invests over £3/4 million in old Remploy factory The Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), together with help from Borough of Poole’s Economic Development team, is supporting a series of exciting NEW Social Enterprise Schemes with the announcement of a five-year funding loan of £775,000 to BCHA. The former Alder Hills factory is being transformed into a hub of innovative Social Enterprise Schemes by Sequal Solutions, BCHA’s social enterprise arm. Having lain empty since Remploy closed its doors in 2012, the renovation has now begun and completion is due in Autumn 2014. The centre will create employment and learning opportunities. It will encourage local people to get involved with a diverse variety of initiatives, from a training and skills academy, upcycling pre-loved furniture and bicycles, to gaining catering qualifications at its onsite café using local home grown produce.

Dorset LEP is keen to support the social enterprise centre as it will provide excellent skills training for local people leading to an increase in job opportunities in a range of sectors across the county.

many opportunities for the people of Poole and Bournemouth and Dorset to learn new skills and achieve qualifications, helping them to gain employment.

Gordon Page, Chair of the Dorset LEP Board, said: “Dorset LEP is delighted to be supporting this exciting and innovative initiative. We support social enterprises and want to see them thrive whilst creating more jobs and growth for Dorset. This is good news for everyone.” Martin Hancock, Chief Executive of BCHA, commented: “We are very grateful to Dorset LEP for providing us with this funding to enable us to purchase and transform the old Remploy factory, bringing a former social enterprise site back to life. Bournemouth Watt A Waste! Castlepoint Number Targets Energy Costs Works’nWords Celebrates Second Anniversary Southbourne residents Edward and Connie Rothman, owners of Bournemouth NumberWorks’nWords tuition centre, are celebrating two years helping Bournemouth students reach their full potential. The tuition centre, located in Southbourne Crossroads, provides maths and English tuition for students from primary through GCSE. They help children who have learning gaps as well as children who are working above their year level. In addition, they offer 11+ exam preparation. Mum Nikki says, “Huge thanks to Edward & the guys at NumberWorks’nWords for helping to unleash Joe’s potential.”

Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park has, over 7 years, focused on recycling waste and last year achieved a milestone by achieving zero waste to landfill. Now the Management team is stepping up its ongoing fight against energy wastage as part of its eco-friendly mandate. Over recent months, and over many visitors heads, Gareth Dix, Senior Electrical Engineer at the park has been working high above the top deck of the car park replacing over 100 of the original bulbs with new energy saving LED lighting. Peter Matthews, General Manager at Castlepoint, said that the £35,000 investment will contribute to their battle against bills and energy wastage: “Since 2004 Castlepoint has saved an average of 100,000 kilowatts per hour each year but achieved a saving of 41,000 kilowatt hours last year. Our aim now is to minimise the power we use to light the centre down to only 1 million kilowatt hours per year, without reducing the safety and comfort of our shoppers.

We have 211,000 kilowatt hours to lose! The installation of the new car park lighting will also mean less time required on maintenance and the lights are controlled by both sensors and

timers to be even more efficient.” Future plans include LED lighting for the lower level car park which already has energy saving lighting in sections that automatically dims when sensors detect no movement.

Since 2004 Castlepoint has saved an average of 100,000 kilowatts per hour each year but achieved a saving of 41,000 kilowatt hours last year. Peter Matthews, General Manager

Local Business Cliff House Hotel For visitors to the South who want history, luxury and exceptional food and service, they should look no further than Cliff House Hotel, a picture perfect Victorian boutique hotel, nestled in the peaceful yet vibrant town of Southbourne… For 24 years he and the Food Show team have expertly organised and created spectacular dishes for all manner of events and parties. Their food philosophy has always been simple: to source high quality, seasonal produce, tracing its journey from farm to plate, for unbeatable taste and freshness. This philosophy now inspires the culinary team at Cliff House Hotel - passionate and skilled innovators who pride themselves on their delicious, elegant dishes, and fresh ideas.

Tim Seward, General Manager

Dating back to the 1880s, Cliff House Hotel has been called home by countless happy families over the years, and at one time was even a boys’ school. During extensive renovations in 2003, a team of professional architects and interior designers first stripped the 120 year old building back to its barest form, before painstakingly rebuilding it to see it through the next 100 years in style. And now, the building’s bar, lounge and gardens are being given a fresh new makeover to keep it up to date with the changing times. - Not only is Cliff House Hotel perfectly placed to explore Bournemouth, Christchurch, the New Forest and the famous Jurassic coastline, but the building itself is unique to the area and a truly special place to stay. “Each of our 14 en-suite light and airy rooms has been individually and sympathetically designed in order to be an inviting oasis of calm, while still showcasing the historic charm and character of the 19th century former homestead,” says new owner and Managing Director Andrew Gosling. Not only does Cliff House Hotel have a fascinating history, so does Andrew himself: he bought the hotel in November 2013 as a natural progression to his successful London-based catering and events company, Food Show Ltd.

Bringing General Manager Tim Seward on board to take care of the day to day running of Cliff House Hotel was an easy decision: with over 20 years experience in catering and hospitality, there is little that Tim doesn’t know about customer service. His pride and knowledge of the local area has also led him to become a Committee Member of the Bournemouth Accommodation Hospitality Association and a Bournemouth Customer Care Champion.

We both believe in not just meeting but exceeding expectations, and are dedicated to making the Cliff House Hotel experience an exceptional one. Andrew Gosling, Managing Director

Jack Romero – A brief history

Hopes are high at BCHA, as Jack Romero, whose rags to riches story has been featured nationally, has signed up to be the new charity ambassador of the organisation. BCHA, which provides lasting solutions to homelessness, unemployment and social exclusion in our communities throughout the South is thrilled to announce, Jack Romero, as the organisation’s charity ambassador. Jack, who led a rather turbulent life when after fleeing Lebanon, his war-torn country of birth at the age of 17, rose through adversity from sleeping rough on the streets of London, to owning his very own airline which was sold for £30 million. Jack’s appointment was announced at BCHA’s staff conference on the 10th June, after giving a presentation summarising his story, Jack received a standing ovation from staff members who commented, “Jack will be a truly amazing ambassador for us, his determination, ability to not lose hope and to keep going no matter how bad things got is just the inspiration our clients need.” On becoming the new charity ambassador of BCHA, Jack Romero has commented: “With my personal background I feel I can truly relate to what many who come to the organisation are going through. The work that BCHA do is extremely important. Without support people in such situations can easily begin to lose hope. Without hope, there is no determination to achieve and that can lead to a very dark place. I am enormously passionate about the work of BCHA, delighted to become an ambassador and will be helping wherever possible.”

With little money, no grasp of the English language and without a place to stay Jack lived his first few years in England on the streets of London. However Jack had an undying dream of becoming a pilot. It was with this dream in mind that Jack took any job he could find, sometimes working as many as three at a time in order to fund his passion and gain flying lessons. Yet this did not come cheap; two hours of flying lessons cost a week’s worth of wages and, unable to pay his rent, Jack was twice evicted from his lodgings and frequently forced to sleep rough. But Jack persevered and banked the 700 hours of air time needed, gaining his private pilots licence in 1984. After working as an aerial photographer, Jack faced yet another setback as he was made redundant. With only a months-worth of rent left in his pocket, Jack realised his new dream, to set up his own airline, and invested that month’s rent into it. Whilst coming within weeks of being evicted and declared bankrupt, Jack was able to gain an airline licence, offices and £6 million pound from investors to form British Mediterranean Airways. From then on Jack’s airline took off and in 2010 Jack’s airline was sold for £30 million.

Unfold the Natural Benefits of Transcendental Meditation Transcendental Meditation unfolds the full potential of life. Extensive research has found it reduces stress and anxiety resulting in more creativity, health, success and happiness. We have been based in Bournemouth since 2011 and are Directors of the only Transcendental Meditation Centre in Dorset. We hold weekly intro talks, bi-monthly courses and teach individuals and groups from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages. People come to learn because they want to practice a natural method for developing good health and a clear mind.

It changes consciousness, it’s really good if you’ve had addiction issues. It’s highly psychological, and very beautiful, and overwhelming, and real, and trippy!

As teachers of Transcendental Meditation we represent the charitable trust that has been based in the Wessex area since the 1980’s to develop, and support the teaching of the TM technique.

Russell Brand, Celebrity

Your Local Teachers: Anna Campbell has been meditating since the age of six, and Iain Campbell has practiced Transcendental Meditation for 20 years; as well as being a school teacher for 13 years. We have found in our own experience that Transcendental Meditation is that one thing that makes the rest of life worth living. It works effectively by quieting the mind and relaxing the body for 20 minutes twice daily. Anyone can learn and everyone can benefit from reducing stress and anxiety, and recognising the potential for greater happiness lies within. Since becoming Teachers of Transcendental Meditation we have taught children as young as four to elder members of society. We have successfully taught people with insomnia, depression; specific physical disorders and health related issues. The all got quick results and continue to enjoy regular daily practice. We have taught teenagers with autism, ADHD and those who are high achievers. The technique is above all else practical in its application and is without doubt simple in its procedure. Anyone who can think can meditate, but we need to use a method that works and to get personal instruction from an accredited teacher trained to recognise unique individual experiences, and support our practice with care and deep understanding. Why then is TM unique? Meta-Analysis has shown that it is twice as effective in reducing stress and anxiety compared with other meditation and relaxation methods. Anyone can learn and successfully

Effects of Transcendental Mediation on the physiology are:

practice the Technique irrespective of age, cultural background or capacity by sitting down with eyes closed for 20 minutes twice daily. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi the founder of the programme introduced the technique 60 years ago in order to regenerate the world. Since then over 7 million people irrespective of race or religion have learned the technique. Meditation has been misunderstood. That it is difficult, only the few get result and that practical life and our time has to be compromised in order get maximum results. Indeed we find the opposite to be the case when teaching Transcendental Meditation because it is so easy to practice. It is evident that we cannot find satisfaction if our focus and attention is only on the surface of life’s ups and downs. During the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique the mind settles down as stress and anxiety automatically dissolves in the body because we get level of rest 2-3 times deeper than sleep. We develop integrated brain functioning; that is unique and

After that you have learned a simple, natural and enjoyable practice that is a tool for life. Contact us to find out more and book in for a free talk.

Health & wellbeing Tech a break Lack of time is often cited as one of the biggest barriers for not being as healthy as we’d like what with work, family commitments, the tedious commute into the office and a busy social life. But these days, on top of all that, we also have modern technology zapping our precious minutes, with many (in fact, most) of us checking our phones, emails, and Facebook and Twitter accounts from the moment we wake to the moment we sleep . Guaranteed, almost everyone standing at a bus stop, sitting on a train or even sitting on the sofa is fiddling with their gadgets, whether they’re listening to music, playing games or indulging in a quick selfie. In itself, this now unavoidable part of life might not be doing us any real harm, but the side-effect of gadget addiction often means we’re losing valuable time that could be spent exercising, relaxing and eating healthily - three things which are vital to our overall health and wellbeing. So before you declare: “I don’t have any time to work out!” take a long hard look at how many hours a day you’re spending glued to a screen. Could you cut back on tech-time and replace it with some wellbeing wonders? You might be surprised by how much you can achieve in just short time-pockets. “For those willing to get sweaty and breathless and workout at a tougher level, potentially just 15 minutes of exercise four times a week can deliver the same great health protective effects than long sessions,” says Rob Jones, a personal trainer at StrideFit (www.stridefit.com). Also, according to research recently published in Organisational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, late night smartphone, tablet, computer and TV use, interferes with our sleep and productivity the following day. The devices emit a blue light which disturbs the way the brain processes the hormone, melatonin, which induces relaxation and sleep. “Getting less than seven hours’ sleep a night is below the recommended guidelines and is associated with a range of problems”. In the long run, this can include an increased risk of weight gain, heart attacks, diabetes and certain types of cancer. So even if you can’t bear to tear yourself away from the screen completely , at least try and free up an hour - or just 15 minutes - a day, and you’ll soon realise the benefits of logging off.

TIME-ZAPPER: Social butterfly While it’s great to keep in contact with everyone and stay in the loop with those you love, a short break from scrolling through friends’ status feeds and photos won’t damage your social life. It could, however, be a great chance to activate your body and mind with some exercise. TIME SWAPS: 15 minutes: Try a short bodyweight circuit at home or in the garden. No equipment required; you’re using your own bodyweight to build strength, with anything from squats, push-ups and sit-ups. Shorter rest periods between exercises will mean you’ll burn fat faster. 30 minutes: Go for a run. A brief half-hour jog

could boost your fitness in no time. Alternate sprint and jog speeds for bigger benefits. 1 hour: Take up a class or team sport, such as touch rugby which is great for all ages and fitness levels.

15

TIME-ZAPPER: Square eyes Watching Breaking Bad may have helped you get through the cold winter nights, but now the longer days and warmer weather are here, it’s time to change your habits. There’s nothing wrong with sitting down to enjoy programmes you enjoy, but mindlessly staring at the screen day after day could be doing your relaxation levels no favours. TIME SWAPS: 15 minutes: Learn to meditate. It may feel odd at first, but even a short amount of time sitting quietly with absolutely no disruptions and focusing on your breathing can benefit your mind no end. 30 minutes: Go for a walk - and look at what’s around you, instead of keeping your head down glued to your smartphone screen. The fresh air, as well as taking in your surroundings, is a simple but failsafe wellbeing booster. 1 hour: Take a yoga class or do a session at home in your living room. As well as stretching your limbs and increasing blood flow, you’ll benefit from increased calmness too. TIME-ZAPPER: Gorging on gadgets Do yourself a favour and leave the internet behind when you finish work for the day. Ditch some of the time you’d usually spend checking emails, browsing the web or social media sites to prepare some healthy grub. It only saves you money and time, but also improves your body and mind. TIME SWAPS: 15 minutes: In the morning, this is all the time it takes to have a good breakfast full of low GI foods like porridge, or a colourful fruit plate, which will top up vitamin levels and keep your energy levels stable until lunch. 30 minutes: After work, make yourself a healthy lunch to take to work the next day. This will give you more time to enjoy your lunch break and relax, rather than standing in a queue to buy an overpriced sarnie. You’ll also have complete control over what you’re eating, meaning less hidden sugar and salt and more health-boosting ingredients. 1 hour: After a long day at work, put all the devices away and make an occasion of dinner time, giving your meal the full attention it deserves without the constant disruption of bleeps and vibrations. Have fun experimenting with recipes and boost your health in the process.

Tried and tested Sweats it out the fast way, in a Tabata class What is it? A four-minute intense workout, Tabata’s been clinically proven to be the most effective way of burning calories for longer while also hugely increasing fitness. The basic principle is 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times. That’s about the same time as it takes to make a cup of tea! It is named after Japanese research scientists Professor Izumi Tabata, whose clinical trials have shown that after a Tabata session you can burn more calories for up to 12 hours. The four minutes can consist of the same exercise or a variety of exercises - the more you keep moving, the better. What’s it like? The 20-minute class consisted of a 10-minute warm-up, four-minute Tabata and a six-minute cool down. We did two ‘killer’ exercises, which vary with each class and are a combination of bodyweight movements. There’s also a ‘kinder’ option to make the workout easier if you’re struggling. Even though the trainer was driving the pace, it’s down to you how hard you push, but obviously, the harder you go, the more you will reap the benefits. Tabata is not for the faint-hearted and offers an exciting and quick way of exercising.

Health & wellbeing Detox your desk Ditch the desk nasties and give your skin a promotion. We reveal the everyday beauty pitfalls to avoid during the nine to five It’s quite possible you spend more time at your desk than anywhere else. Guilty? While overtime and hard work might lead to a pay rise (if you’re lucky!), your skin could be paying the price in the long run. Even the most clean and tidy person can neglect their desk environment in a haze of deadlines and to-do lists. If your work space regime is in need of an overhaul, look no further than the mirror for declutter motivation. “You may think you’re getting ahead putting in the hours at your desk, but it could be taking its toll on your face,” warns Jill Zander, founder of the Jill Zander Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. Home office or corporate desk, beautify your work space and reward yourself with clear skin.

Slack jowls We can blame the ageing process for slackened skin, but your desk posture can add to sagging jawline woes. If you regularly sit for extended periods of time with your head bent slightly forward, staring at a screen, you can shorten the neck muscles and increase the gravitational pull on the jawline, eventually leading to the formation of jowls.

Make sure that your computer screen is correctly positioned at eye level to keep your face in a lifted, forwardfacing position as much as possible... This helps prevent a drooping jawline, which can be caused by looking down too much Jill Zander

Lean lines

Bacteria build-up

Even office workers who abide by textbook health and safety seated positions can end up slumping, with head in hands, before clocking-off time.

If you discover recurring spots on one side of your face, your desk phone might be the culprit. Alarmingly, phones can carry 10-20 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

Adjust your chair height so that your forearms rest firmly on the desk - this will make you less likely to lean on your hands and make you more aware of your sitting position.

Desk dehydration That comfortable temperature-regulated office environment that stops you needing big jumpers in the winter can also be a prime suspect for dry skin. Artificial heating or cooling could be zapping your skin for around 40 hours a week if you work a desk-bound eight-hour day.

Keep a pack of anti-bacterial surface wipes in your desk drawer and clean your keyboard and phone once a week. A mini hand sanitiser will also help curb the spread of spot-causing germs if you’re prone to touching your face and hair.

Skin stress Even if it’s just for five minutes, try and get out the office for a de-stressing walk. Getting out in the open is also great for helping to top up vitamin D levels, which stimulates the production of elastin and collagen.

How TV & web video advertising can grow your business The future of advertising has arrived with new platforms, such as Sky AdSmart & viral Internet campaigns; TV advertising, video and animation is now more affordable to local businesses than ever before. Take for example, the cute mascots of the comparethemarket’s compare the meerkat campaign. These cute critters succeeded in capturing the public’s imagination through their simultaneous charm and outlandishness, raising the company’s market share by 70% in the process, via both TV & viral Internet platforms. Similarly, older characters such as Churchill the dog have remained in the popular consciousness for long periods of time, nearly two decades in this case. So if TV advertising is now more accessible, how can you make your message stand out from the crowd? Here at LoveLove Films, we believe the answer lies in strong characters and creative images. In both live action & animated advertising, the key is in creating an advert that is clearly distinct in the minds of your target market, creating a lasting memory. The most successful examples of TV advertising are those with which the audience chooses to engage with voluntarily- going viral in the language of the advertising industry. Typically, these sorts of advertising campaigns come in one of two forms; either a charismatic character, or else a clever idea executed in an exceptionally interesting way.

A still from the Creditplus TV advert, created by LoveLove Films

The other kind of viral advert succeeds from a brilliant concept & exceptional execution. Volvo Trucks for example, recently had great success with their Epic Splits video, with over 40 million views on YouTube alone. They hired Van Damme, an 80s action star, to perform his trademark splits, straddling the gap between two of their reversing lorries. Of course, both of these campaigns had significant budgets behind them, but in truth, the idea is of more importance. Recent innovations in technology have allowed the cost of such campaigns to fall, so that they now lie within the realm of even SMEs. We have recently produced a range of multimedia

content for local businesses, including most recently an animated TV Commercial for Dorset based CreditPlus which is due to air on television shortly. So what are you waiting for? At LoveLove Films, we specialise in producing successful viral and TV advertising campaigns, and can aid you in creating effective video content. So why not put our skills to the test?

Local creatives Life’s a Silicon Beach Bournemouth and Poole’s growing reputation as a digital, advertising and media hub has received a huge boost with the expansion of this September’s Silicon Beach festival. Suzi Dixon reports. There’s nothing more satisfying than combining a career you are passionate about with beautiful surroundings like ours. So it should come as no surprise that Bournemouth and Poole attracts a number of creative types in media and advertising - as well as, of course, a growing digital community. With the expansion of the Silicon Beach conference into Silicon Beach+, three weeks of complimentary events taking place across Bournemouth. September 18 and 19 are the dates for the fourth, and largest, Silicon Beach, attracting 21 of the UK’s leading thinkers and practitioners from the worlds of advertising and digital innovation. Significantly, Bournemouth Borough Council have committed to support the conference for the next three years; founder Matt Desimier, of ThinkCreateDo, is delighted. “I’ve produced the two-day event for the last three years, the intention always being to create an event of national significance that just happens to be based in Bournemouth,” he said. “ The event has been a huge success, enticing some big name speakers, and it continues to do so. The line-up this year is very impressive, even if I do say so myself, and the audience travels from all over the UK to attend.” Four out of the 21 speakers this year are homegrown, so to speak. Nick Farnhill grew up in Wimborne and went to QE School; Danielle Newnham is a Bournemouth University graduate; Dean Johnson is a Arts University graduate; and Simon White once ran an agency based in Poole. As well as a jam-packed programme of speakers, there will be plenty of ideas exchange going on behind the scenes, too, with the town’s digital and media elite all in attendance. Arabella LewisSmith, of Salad Creative, will be celebrating eight nominations and a Web Design win in last month’s prestigious RAR awards, as well as a

Best for being On Budget from the RAR Awards earlier this year. Certainly, Arabella believes this area is the perfect environment for creatives in the tech and media industries. “Our office overlooks Poole Harbour,” Arabella said. “You can’t get much more idyllic than that!” Bournemouth and Poole’s thriving digital and media community is due in part to the worldclass Media School at Bournemouth University, whose graduates have either stayed in the town or migrated back after working at the highest level in London. There have been some exciting and ambitious start ups in the past three years to add to the 400+ agencies in total across Dorset. UpRaw and DoMore Magazine, thriving what’s on and what’s hot digital magazines; The Game, an ambitious glossy high end health magazine; and BournemouthNews.info, an independent news website who work with Bournemouth’s Media School to give students real-time experience of reporting, photography and video production - they will be out in force throughout the two days of Silicon Beach, experimenting with new realtime news reporting techniques and social media formats. “And then if you position Silicon Beach and Silicon Beach+ alongside the area having the World’s Largest Open Device Lab, WordCampUK coming to Bournemouth this July, All About People taking place last month and Re:Develop taking place in August too, ThinkCreateDo, the two universities and a myriad of award-winning agencies, Bournemouth is emerging as a creative and digital hotspot to rival Brighton or Bristol,” Matt said. Brighton may have a beach but it’s full of pebbles; Bristol merely has a river. If you were one of the best in your field, where would you rather live? Bournemouth Coastal BID Time to take breath It’s just over two years since the Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) was voted through by local businesses – and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind since then, says Alun Williams, Coastal BID Manager.

Bournemouth is the only place in Britain to have voted through two BIDs simultaneously – on Friday 13th April 2012! The Coastal BID runs from Westbourne, through the West Cliff, East Cliff, Boscombe and Southbourne, to Hengistbury Head. It shares an office with the Town Centre BID. However, they are two independent companies, with their own staff and separate Business Plans.. The Coastal BID Business Plan sets out its objectives, eligibility criteria and framework budget for the five year term. There are around 760 businesses contributing £480,000pa. Some 50% of the Coastal BID income is derived from primarily tourism related firms on the East Cliff and West Cliff. The other half comes mainly from retailers, food and drink providers in the coastal villages of Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne. The BID has 3 key areas of promotional activity. On the tourism marketing side it adopted, along with Bournemouth Tourism, the “Colour Your Life” theme which appears on all publications.

It’s run two autumn and two spring marketing campaigns aimed at attracting more staying visitors: Autumn Glow, Blooming Beautiful Bournemouth, Golden Ticket and this spring’s event orientated promotion which supported the new Wheels Festival. Events have been a strong and growing theme. The Coastal BID has sponsored four major, new, town events – The Family Adventure Festival (returning this autumn as “The Big Bournemouth Adventure Weekend”), Christmas ‘Gardens of Light’, Wheels and the P1 ‘Grand Prix of the Sea’. Locally it sponsored Christmas activities both years in the three coastal villages, plus the Great Exhibition of Boscombe (linked to Arts by the Sea), Halloween (2012 and 2013), the Tourism Award winning Shake & Stir (vintage music fashion, cars, food & drink), Talent and Fashion Competitions (Boscombe 2013) and the Easter Adventure (2012 & 2103). Other activities in the coastal villages have included the popular Coastal BID walking map, and a wayfinding and signage project (in partnership with the Town Centre BID and Bournemouth Council). This will see a new coordinated pedestrian signage scheme installed

this autumn. 40 push to talk handsets to help combat anti-social behaviour in Boscombe (available free to BID businesses); an important retail research project (in conjunction with NCTA) and new footfall cameras. Three of the off season marketing campaigns have also encouraged local residents to explore Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne. As BH Business goes to print the Coastal BID Board is also pausing, as they too review activities over the last two years and confirm the plans for the coming BID year which starts on 1 July 2014. Zest for Bournemouth as Citrus Building launches Prospective buyers have begun viewing the first residential and commercial property to come from the Bournemouth Development Company (BDC), the delivery partner for Bournemouth Borough Council’s Town Centre Vision. A show apartment has been opened at the stylish five-storey Citrus Building overlooking Horseshoe Common after an official launch attended by more than 60 guests. The £12 million development, on the former council-owned surface car park at Leyton Mount, comprises 64 apartments and, once open, will house a 290 sq m (3,120 sq ft) café or restaurant. Funding included a £5 million investment from the Get Britain Building programme run by the Homes & Communities Agency. Duncan Johnston, BDC Development Director, said: “The launch event was a chance to say thank you to those involved in bringing the Citrus Building to fruition as we move into the go-to-market phase. This is an architecturally impressive building, with beautifully appointed apartments, which will help rejuvenate the town centre and

strengthen the area’s presence as a much sought-after location.” Firms active in the planning and property sectors, such as Terence O’Rourke, Goadsby, Bond Dickinson and Princecroft Willis, were represented at the launch along with organisations such as Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, Bournemouth Tourism Management Board, AFC Bournemouth and Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce. Councillor John Beesley, Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, who cut the ribbon to open the Citrus Building show apartment, said: “Our regeneration partnership BDC is going from strength to strength as we continue to stimulate the local economy, in this case through attracting new residents to the town centre, especially those who are first-time buyers.” Apartments at the Citrus Building – so-called because of its bright orange, yellow and green exterior and curvy shape – range from studios to three bedrooms, all incorporating stylish, contemporary design. Prospective occupiers must pre-register their interest for an

appointment to view the show apartment. The first occupiers are expected to move into the Citrus Building towards the end of the summer. BDC, a regeneration partnership between Bournemouth Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments, is developing a number of surface car park sites in the town centre. The first development to be completed was the nearby Madeira Road multi-storey car park which opened earlier this year offering 382 public parking spaces over seven floors. Alongside, work is under way on three blocks of much-needed student accommodation for the Arts University Bournemouth. Due to open for the 2014-15 academic year, the residences will house 378 students.

Launch of Business Strategy & Innovation Voucher scheme for Creative SME’s

BDC is also preparing plans for a residential development, with multi-storey car park, at Berry Court and is looking at further schemes at Durley Road and St Stephens.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Last month in my first column for the magazine, I wrote about “it can be a lonely place running a business,” and I’m pleased to say that that sounded a resonance with some of you out there, because I had a number of you ringing me for advice a signposting to various support organisations, please don’t forget that we really are here to help you with advice and guidance. Positive news for the Bournemouth area regarding new business formation. Figures in the brand new Duport Business Confidence Report for Bournemouth show an increase in company formation numbers during the first quarter of 2014. I thank them for the following information. The first quarter of the year saw a surge in company formations in Bournemouth, according to a new report from Duport.co.uk. According to the research, there were 455 new companies formed during Q1, representing a 12% rise on the same period last year. The report also shows that February was a record month for company formations in Bournemouth. The rise in company formations could be attributed to the area’s increasing popularity as a tourist destination. Bournemouth’s National Coastal Tourism Academy recently celebrated its first year of promoting the resort. Over the course of the year, the Academy focussed on creating an enhanced visitor experience, rolling out new training programmes and the creation of a new attraction, the Coastal Activity Park at Boscombe. Unemployment is down against last year’s figures for the same period, the claimant count for unemployed people in May 2013 was 3,743 in the Bournemouth area, in April this year the figure was 2,815. t 01202 454630 christopher.kelu@bournemouth.gov.uk www.bournemouth.gov.uk

Work Experience for Syrian Student at Bennington Green

The Housing Market. What will 2014/15 bring? Whether you are a first-time buyer or a foreign billionaire, here is what the next 12 months have in store by the pundits. The general agreement is that next year will bring more of the same for homeowners. “It will be another good year for property prices,” says Doug Shephard ofhome. co.uk. “Increased confidence will no doubt produce extraordinary price rises. Regional disparities that exist will continue to play out, and may well be exaggerated further by the Government’s blanket implementation of Help to Buy.” Savills agrees that 2014 will see a continued increase in prices, with Greater London catching up with prime central London. It expects the commutable area around the capital to increase by five and six per cent, with central London rising three per cent. The rest of England and Wales will see a three-four per cent increase, with Scotland lagging behind at one per cent. With an increasingly limited supply of properties and ongoing demand, it could prove a popular year for making a change. “We have experienced a 21 per cent yearon-year increase in traffic, ” says Miles Shipside of Rightmove. “With mortgages still historically cheap and interest rates set to remain stable, it could be opportune to make 2014 the year to move.” Business thought for the month! Don’t forget the digital side of your company, your website, social media presence, and keeping it updated, and if you’re still a member of the Flintstones clan, in relation to e marketing, please call or email us, and we’ll signpost you to someone that can help. Hani Mazloum from Syria first approached Bennington Green at a careers evening held at the Bournemouth Collegiate School, earlier in the year.

Nigel added: “Sadly, with the unrest currently in Syria, it’s inevitable that they will be requiring many different disciplines right across the whole property and construction spectrum when they come to start rebuilding their country in future years, and hopefully we’ve given Hani a helping hand in this regard.”

At the event he expressed a desire to gain work experience and insight towards his chosen career of civil engineering. He spoke at length at the event to Nigel Soloman who is himself a Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers and also the MD of Bennington Green. Nigel said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Hani to the Bennington Green offices. We made his time with us as informative as possible and also arranged for him to spend a day with the Poole Harbour Commissioners to see how they operate. With the diversity and wide range of experience we have here, it’s a great place for Hani to learn the ropes and to understand the basics of how our consultancy works. I personally have spent many years working on large civil engineering projects overseas so

Last year organisers successfully funded a third Night Air display and again the intention is to organise three evenings of entertainment and bridge the early evening gap with even more flying and music! If last year was big, this year is bigger and better as the Royal Navy demonstrates their land, sea and air abilities. At sea will be a 4 ship fleet, which includes the French Navy’s FS Sagittaire alongside the RFA Argus, HMS Westminster and HMS Mersey, in the air check out the return of the Black Cats Helicopter Display Team, Royal Navy Historic Flight and Sea Kings. On the ground will be an impressive joint Army village area, hosting the much anticipated amphibious demonstration. Celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines, there will also be unarmed combat demonstrations and the historic Beat Retreat performed by The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood. Royal Navy Commodore Jamie Miller said; “2014 will be the greatest ever concentration of Naval force yet seen off Bournemouth, needless to say I am keeping some surprises back - but rest assured this will be our best year yet!” With a full allocation of RAF display aircraft, the UKs leading seaside resort is set to welcome back the Red Arrows on ALL 4 days of the Festival, a first for the event, and the mighty Typhoon Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition get set for the Tutor, Tucano,

RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team and incredible Battle of Britain Memorial Flight displaying with the Dakota, another first for this year’s flying programme. RAF Wing Commander Alf Garnett said; “The Air Festival is a high priority event for the RAF, in terms of audience numbers it’s perfect for showcasing our aircraft and offers a first class arena for engaging with the public and showing them what we do for them on a daily basis.” The onshore interactive Forces village areas, the Royal Navy at the heart of the Festival with the Army and Royal Marines, and the RAF located in the Waterfront at Pier Approach area, will give Festival goers a chance to find out more about each Force as well as talk to those

29

with first-hand experience, check out displays, speak to the Careers teams, charities and have a chance to try out military equipment. Jon Weaver, Air Festival Director added; “For us as a Festival, the organisers, teams of people behind the event and the hundreds of thousands of people who attend, it really shows how far we have come to have such superb Royal Navy and RAF support. This is our seventh Air Festival and with some great confirmations including the Red Arrows performing on all four days, return of the Typhoon, superb Naval contingency and Night Air entertainment, we hope this will keep us on top and news still to come, as we get closer to the event, will only get better!” Recently announced to display is the much anticipated Canadian Lancaster, displaying with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The last two Lancaster bombers still flying in the world will come together in a series of events this summer, in a meeting unlikely to happen ever again and will be taking centre stage at the Air Festival on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st. Setting Bournemouth Air Festival apart from the other air events is the stunning Night Air programme. Supported by the Patrons 100 Club members and their Ambassador local hotelier David Bailey they will again be funding three nights of evening air displays as well as supporting this year’s Air Festival charities. The entertainment certainly doesn’t stop with the last aircraft as there will be live music at the Bournemouth stage and big name acts and live music on the Wave105 Corona music stage at Boscombe Pier, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until 10pm. With announcements of civilian aircraft participation still to come, as well as the Wave105 Corona stage line up and huge seafront and cliff top trading areas the 2014 Air Festival is certainly set to be the event of the summer! West is Best Westbeach Restaurant June in Bournemouth usually ensures one thing. Traffic to the beach increases infinitely. But perhaps that’s not solely down to the ensuing sunshine. It might just have something to do with one of the town’s favourite eateries being situated just alongside our seven-mile stretch of golden sand. I’ve visited WestBeach before, to enjoy one of their popular Lobster and Burger nights, but had never dined A la Carte here. Though my recent visit highlighted why the seaside restaurant is in the jewel of Bournemouth’s gastronomic crown, and why it is one of just three listed in this year’s Good Food Guide. On arrival, we enjoyed sipping on cold, crisp Prosecco, as we enjoyed some appertisers – hot pitta strips to dip in smooth, creamy Taramasalata – which served us well as we perused the extensive menu, featuring the best that the ocean has to offer (plus a good selection of dishes to keep the carnivorous amongst us happy). To start, I enjoyed my fresh scallops served classically with pea puree and deliciously crispy parma ham, whilst my colleague selected an interesting take on an oriental favourite: Crispy duck egg, Peking style leg meat, served with cucumber, spring onion, crispy pancakes and of course the obligatory hoi sin dressing. Divine! Sticking with the aquatic theme, I opted for the roasted fillet of monkfish, with silky-smooth mashed potato, glazed heritage carrots, decadent bone marrow, in a red wine shallot jus. My plate was clean come the end. My colleague preferred a meat option, and was not disappointed with his soft pork belly, confit for 24 hours, perfectly accompanied by sweet potato puree, a butter bean and chorizo cassoulet and finished off with circles of crispy squid. Portion sizes are generous, so we welcomed a 10 minute break before dessert – the perfect opportunity to take in the simply magnificent seascape before us. I confess, I had checked out the menu online (west-beach.co.uk) before our visit, and had already decided on my pudding in advance – and the warm chocolate brownie with glossy chocolate sauce, popcorn and clotted cream lived up to every expectation – worth the visit for this alone! My colleague’s Rhubarb-infused crème brulee crumble wasn’t to my taste, but he polished off the lot.

The truth is, if you’re looking for somewhere to impress clients, you can’t go far wrong here. We are lucky enough to live in one of the best seaside resorts in Europe, and it is that spirit of the ocean that is embraced here – delivering precisely that: the quintessential taste (and view) of the sea – nothing less.

H2EcO: The Innovative Eco Energy Experts Proudly new members to BCTC, and offering affordable renewable energy to both homes and commercial buildings across Dorset, H2EcO excel in providing outstanding energy solutions to suit every need.

Queen’s speech highlights Major pension changes afoot giving greater flexibility and access to pensions. Last month Queen’s Speech set out two Bills that could change the lives of millions of pensioners in the future. These changes have been set out to deliver greater flexibility and more access to pensions than ever before, and the government asserts that it will help deal with the significant pension shortfall that currently exists. The first major change, a new Private Pensions Bill could allow for “collective pension” schemes. These schemes - also known as “pooled pensions” - would be offered directly through employers, with the aim being to reduce the risk to individuals – a system that is popular in Denmark and The Netherlands. In the second major change, The Pensions Tax Bill could give individuals the freedom and choice to access their pension as they deem appropriate. This Bill addresses the rules that currently allow retirees to take a maximum of just 25% of their pension pot as a lump sum - the changes will now allow people to take the whole pot, subject to tax.

With over 35 years of combined construction and development experience and led by Mike Stephenson, H2EcO have worked with a variety of clients from small rural homes to large commercial buildings and are able to provide specialised eco-energy solutions to suit their client’s specific needs. As a family-centred business, H2EcO are driven by a wish to do their best to protect their children’s futures. H2EcO was founded with the aim to increase the renewable energy generation capacity in the UK as much as possible, whether by installing systems for customers or installing them with their own funding, they provide a variety of eco-energy solutions using the most current, innovative and high-end equipment. Running from

Gareth Simon, Director of Dorset-based Ward Goodman Financial Services, commented on these changes: “Ward Goodman welcome these newly proposed pension changes whole-heartedly. These vital new steps will give our clients greater flexibility and access to their pensions – which can only be in our clients’ best interests.” Mr Simon continued: “Whilst we welcome the changes as they could provide our clients with greater flexibility, we do need to review the ‘small print’ to fully understand the implications of the changes. We are also liaising with pension providers to ensure they can accommodate all of the legislative changes and flexibility.” Ward Goodman Financial Services are providing a free guide that summarises the various pension changes and potential opportunities moving forward. The guide is available from their website. In view of the significant changes, individuals at or nearing retirement should seek independent financial advice before making any decisions. Ward Goodman Financial Services offer a specialist pension review service and the first meeting is without cost or obligation.

A Call in Time, Saves Nine! Richmond Home Improvement Co, Dorset’s leading replacement window and door installer warns of the perils of leaving general maintenance until it’s too late. A recent call out to Richmond from a lady who was unable to close her patio door, involved completely boarding up the window to secure the premises. Allan Tofield, of Richmond said: “This lady said there was a problem with her patio door as she couldn’t shut it, but when we arrived it was evident that the whole unit was completely broken and would require total replacement. “First we had to remove the broken glass but were unable to completely secure the door leaf which was completely damaged so had to resort to boarding up for her security and safety. This added further unnecessary costs as a replacement patio door cost in the region of £1,200. He added, “This is a classic case of lack of maintenance. The customer advised that the door had been difficult to open and close for some time. She now realises she should have called us out in the first instance to repair the frame which would have prevented damage to the door at a relatively small cost. As it was, the final cost involved total replacement of the door and a call out as well as the securing of the premises in the absence of the frame and glass and a further installation.” Richmond advises that this could have been avoided with a few simple repairs. Wherever they work, Richmond’s highly trained operatives exercise the best possible service standards including protecting the property while they work and cleaning up completely at the end of each day. They are now a well-established and respected company, taking the safety of staff and clients very seriously by ensuring a comprehensive Health & Safety policy is in place. They are licensed by the Environment Agency and all waste is disposed of responsibly. As a result, Richmond are now one of the leading windows, doors and conservatory installers in the area. Allan added: “This customer needed to force the door open and closed. If your windows or doors are difficult to open and/or close, this is a

clear indication that something is not right. This window could have been repaired for about £200 but now it’s escalated to nearer £1,500. “If you’re having problems with your doors or windows, ring Richmond.”

For more information on how Richmond can provide an exemplary service Contact

The Richmond team are happy to come out to look at jobs and advise on maintenance of existing doors and windows as this can ultimately save time and money for the homeowner.

Tax Investigations Martin & Company We are all at risk from an enquiry into our tax affairs by HM Revenue & Customs. It doesn’t matter whether you are an individual or a business. HMRC are under huge pressure to raise revenue and close the tax gap.

Some reasons you can be selected for enquiry are:– H MRC computer system could spot something odd on your tax return – HMRC may be undertaking a national or regional campaign against your industry sector/income profile – HMRC improving its computer system allowing databases to be mined for discrepancies (or apparent discrepancies) – HMRC may be acting on a 3rd party tip off or other intelligence – A random enquiry

The random enquiry is perhaps one of the most worrying. All taxpayers have a unique tax reference number (UTR). Your UTR can be selected at random by HMRC’s computer – a bit like winning the premium bonds but with somewhat different consequences. If you are selected by this method then the tax inspectors are required to investigate your affairs even if there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. Where you use your accountant to handle the enquiry, the costs involved can be quite substantial in defending your position with HMRC and explaining all the minor intricacies of your accounting systems. These costs are an unwelcome additional expense and you will feel extremely aggrieved if they find nothing and no adjustments are made to your tax liabilities. However, help is at hand. We run a Tax Investigation Service which is available to all of our clients for an additional annual modest fee. Once you subscribe to the service, our fees (up to £100,000 per claim) are covered where

we defend you against any of the following: – F ull enquiry – an extensive enquiry by HMRC into your tax return – A spect enquiry – where HMRC enquire into one or more specific aspects of your tax return – VAT disputes & IR35 disputes – PAYE/NIC enquiries Where a partnership or limited company joins the service, it will normally cover the tax returns of the partners, directors and their spouses where we deal with their personal affairs as well. In addition, there is a Legal Helpline included if you need help on legal matters, employment issues and health & safety matters. In our view it’s a ‘no brainer’. With HMRC committed to bringing in extra revenue, it’s simply good risk management and cheaper than you think. Contact t 01202 531015 www.martinandcompany.co.uk

Interview

Interview Nev Wilshire To viewers of The Call Centre, he is the real-life David Brent — a cheerfully deluded office manager whose eccentric charms inspired Ricky Gervais, no less, to dub him Britain’s most cringe-worthy boss. How’s business nev? Business is okay. It’s nothing to write home about. The financial side of things is picking up; the grant side is up in the air. It comes to April and the funding goes all over the place when the financial year starts, and then you get going again, so it’s just what it is. You get used to it. How has your life and the business changed since series one of the call centre? Yes, I’m doing a revisit of a money makeover I did nine years ago. The reason I wanted to do this one is because it is perhaps the most difficult money makeover I’ve ever been involved in. They were a family who were in terrible, terrible trouble. I had to cancel their Christmas. I had to tell them they had to sell their house - they’d run up £150,000 on the credit cards. It’s easy to go back three months later and say, ‘Oh yes, they’ve started to improve,’ but nine years on... did it work? To be honest I enjoyed it. People were lovely they were so kind and congratulating. Series one is out on dvd, so tell us about the second on bbc three? The BBC are really excited about it; they think it’s funnier than the last one. There are a few new characters, and some of the old established ones - Hayley the tea lady; Twe, Thorpy. They’re still doing their bit. There’s Jeffrey, he’s an accountant who came in from Nigeria, did a Masters in Swansea University, but he couldn’t get a job because his accountancy qualifications from Nigeria didn’t count over here. I found out a bit about him and said, ‘Get down to the accounts department and tell them to give you a job’. He’s worked for me for a couple of years, and he came in about three or four months ago and his work permit was running out and said, “Can you sign my work permit?” - I won’t tell you any more because it goes downhill from there.

37

What’s your view on cold callers when you’re at home having your dinner?

You have to be better than everybody else. To be better you need the best systems, but most important is the best people.

I always listen to their pitch. It annoys me when they slam the phone down on me; particularly if it’s a foreign call centre - some of them have no manners. When they’re not doing their job properly it annoys me. If there’s a cheery voice and they’re genuinely trying to help you, it’s great. You must be amazed at how well the show has been received They (the BBC) realised they had something different, and when they came in and they were expecting 400,000 viewers on a BBC programme. I hadn’t watched BBC Three ever! I thought, ‘Bit of publicity from it’, but after they’d been filming they said, ‘Look, it’s going to be bigger than we expect. We’ve got something a bit special here’. They recorded 900 hours of film; they had so much they could easily have done a 12-part series. What’s the secret of your success? I’m blessed (laughs); I look up and give thanks. No, it’s hard work. ‘The Lord blessed the work of our hands’, well work hard. That’s it. If you work hard and it’s enjoyable, then it’s not work is it? What’s the secret of a successful business? You have to be better than everybody else. To be better you need the best systems, but most important is the best people. You need well-trained, good, enthusiastic people. It’s all about people. The Call Centre: Series One is available on DVD (acorndvd.com); Series Two continues on BBC3 on Tuesdays at 9pm

Your legal responsibility as a business owner Dealing with the waste your business creates is part of your legal responsibility as a business owner. The choices can seem complicated and expensive but Bournemouth Borough Council could make it easy for you. Council-operated collection vehicles are out and about across the borough and beyond six days a week - did you know they can collect your commercial waste and recycling? Businesses that sign up for the Council service can benefit from the easy recycling offered by a co-mingled collection - glass, plastic, metal, paper and card all go in one bin. Recycling collections are much cheaper than general rubbish, so going green can also save your business money! It’s not as difficult as you think to start recycling at work – office recycling bins are readily available and can be emptied into wheelie bins which come in a variety of sizes. Or, if boxes are your main recyclable material, the Council can provide stickers for bundles of cardboard.

Food waste is also perfect for recycling and, using Anaerobic Digestion, household waste from the Borough is already treated in this way. By letting the waste “ferment” in gas-tight containers and harvesting those gases food waste can be used to generate renewable electricity. What’s left can be used as a fertiliser in agriculture, completing the full lifecycle of the food from farm to plate and back again! Starting from 1st July businesses can also benefit from this service, further reducing their general waste costs. As a last resort there is a competitively-priced general waste collection service. Bournemouth Borough Council takes all general waste, household and commercial, for onward treatment using sophisticated mechanical sorting processes. These processes pull out further recyclable materials, and create a fuel for energy recovery from the remainder. The end result ensures in excess of 90% of general waste is still diverted from landfill.

Margaret, 75, living with cancer My day didn’t start too well. Everything had got on top of me and I felt really low. When I called the Macmillan Support Line, I didn’t know where to start. But somehow they helped me find the words. Just talking honestly about how I felt was such a relief. Now I don't have to cope with the bad days on my own. For cancer support at home, over the phone, call the Macmillan Support Line free
