Thursdays, 7.30pm – 9pm Tutor: Alan Caine

Art, fantasy and imagination: Chagall, Klee, surrealism

Picasso, Braque, Mondrian and Nicholson

9 October – 11 December 2014 £65 / £35 for 10 sessions

7 October – 9 December 2014 Explore paintings by each of the artists. What is the purpose of ‘abstract’ shapes, colours and images which they offer to us, and why are their paintings so highly regarded?

Chagall and Klee created paintings where imagination and fantasy meet us. The surrealists offered images meant to stir our curiosity. Botticelli’s Divine Comedy and Goya’s Caprices are also included.

Matisse, Delaunay, Kandinsky and Schmidt-Rotluff 20 January – 24 March 2015 Strong colour is basic to these artists (from France, Russia and Germany). Each of them consciously distorts shapes and colours to create paintings which are clearly a step removed from the normal appearance of things. Kandinsky also moves into shapes and lines which seem closer to music than to representation. What have they achieved, and how can we ‘read’ them?

Early 20th century American painters 19 February – 26 March 2015 £40 / £20 for 6 sessions A broad survey of artists from Thomas Eakins and George Bellows to Williem de Kooning. What interests them? What is the impact of their work? In what ways are they American?
