Welcome

Welcome to Summer 2020

This summer season brings our Academic year to an end with a great array of interesting performances and brand new exhibitions. I am particularly excited to welcome local writer Lewis Doherty’s brilliant story telling tour-de-force, Boar. This was one of my highlights of the Edinburgh Fringe – one of the hottest tickets of the season so grab a place whilst you can, I can guarantee you will be completely bowled over by this high energy one man show! Our uplift from Arts Council England to support talent development begins to work its way into the programme with a chance to see one of our very first co-commissions. We are very proud and delighted to welcome back Queer Lady M in its final version after a sell-out performance last year. This play is a great example of how we are supporting exciting local talent to make new work and this retelling of “the Scottish Play” really brings a fresh light to one of Shakespeare’s greatest anti-heroes, Lady Macbeth. Everyone is welcome at Attenborough Arts Centre – hope you can join us!

Kelly Richardson: Mariner 9

Gallery opening times:

Saturday 7 March – Sunday 28 June 2020

Monday: Closed

Mariner 9 (2012) presents a panoramic video view of the Mars landscape hundreds of years in the future, littered with the rusting remains of various missions to the planet. Created with software used by the film and gaming industries, and using data from NASA’s missions to Mars, Richardson has created a realistic representation of the Mars landscape covered by the debris of centuries of exploration. Despite the apparent abandoned state of the planet,

Tuesday to Friday: 12pm – 6pm Saturday: 10am – 5pm Sunday: 12pm – 4pm

some of the spacecraft continue to work, looking for signs of life. Kelly Richardson (b. 1972, Canada) is one of the leading members of a new generation of artists using digital technologies to create hyper-real, highly charged landscapes. Recent solo exhibitions include Dundee Contemporary Arts, CAG Vancouver, VOID Derry and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. Her video installations have been included in presentations at the Toronto Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival.

2020 In 2020 Attenborough Arts Centre will be hosting a year-long celebration of space, linked to the opening of the University of Leicester’s new space park. The programme will launch with the presentation of Kelly Richardson’s 3 screen video installation Mariner 9, alongside an immersive installation by Katie Paterson.

Katie Paterson: Totality Saturday 7 March – Sunday 14 June Katie Paterson (b. 1981, Scotland) collaborates with scientists and researchers from across the world to make artworks that explore our place on Earth in the context of geological time and change. Combining a Romantic sensibility with a research-based approach, her work collapses the distance between the viewer and the furthest edges of space and time. Totality is a large mirrorball featuring images of almost every solar eclipse that has been documented by humankind, printed onto each of the 10,000 mirror tiles.

See our exhibitions

Coming Next The Sky Above Your Head Saturday 18 July – Sunday 6 December The Sky Above Your Head will survey the many ways in which contemporary artists have responded to the subject of outer space. Some artists have used space as direct subject matter or have undertaken creative investigations of materials that exist beyond earth, whilst other artists have taken the idea of the universe as a starting point for exploring the human condition.

Balcony gallery Situated on the first floor, our balcony gallery connects our bustling studio spaces with our café and theatre, and, like our main galleries, is free to enjoy. We host four to six exhibitions each year, with a strong focus on artists living in the region who are connected to Attenborough Arts Centre through our Creative Learning programme or projects. Next time you visit, come upstairs and explore our latest exhibition.

What’s On January - April 2020

It’s the season of cutting carbs, hitting it hard at the gym, and shaving everything from the chin down. Summer has rocked up and the media has us thinking about how our bodies aren’t up to scratch and there are companies ready to capitalise on that. We’ve been shamed, dehumanised, and humiliated for how we look and we’ve had enough. Join The Roaring Girls for a defiantly feel-good show which sticks two fingers up at how the media says you should look. The Roaring Girls are getting Beach Body Ready. Are you?

14/48 is a speed theatre festival, engaging new audiences and developing both emerging and experienced artists and theatre makers. It’s an international ‘family’ of veteran artists connected via a shared experience of the festival and its values: Speed, Trust, Creativity and Teamwork.

The festival aims to develop satellite festivals across the world, encouraging a flow of artists between festivals, and the benefits that blossom from these connections. Leicester is the UK’s hub for the festival, developing festivals in a series of other cities in partnership with regional producers.

14 plays are written, directed, scored, designed and performed within a 48hour period. 75 Artists are engaged in each weekend of the festival. They are challenged to simply create, and to trust their fellow artists to create.

Queer Lady M

The Thelmas Friday 1 May 7pm – 8.05pm £10 / £5 NUS / £5 Disability Living Allowance / £30 Family of four Suitable for ages 16+

1623 Friday 5 June 7pm – 8pm Suitable for ages 12+

A hotel room, a chambermaid and a dead woman. It’s not what it looks like, really, it’s not. It was self-defence... and anyway the woman was asking for it. The chambermaid considers herself to be a pretty normal person; she reads books. She pretended to read the party manifestos at the General Election. She’s even read The Psychopath Test and she’s pretty sure she’s not one so... Ladykiller is a blood-soaked morality tale about victimhood, power and flipping the gender rule book on psychopathy- the (gruesome) quintessential jet-black comedy for the age of the gig economy.

It’s time for Queer Lady M’s cabaret! Performed by gender-fluid artist Shane Gabriel, Lady Macbeth comes to life like you’ve never experienced before. There’s outrageous lip-syncing, cheeky dancing and sassy conversation as Queer Lady M invites you to enter her world of passion and shade. But what happens when the show is over, when Shane removes the makeup and puts Lady M to bed? What stories will come to light as Shane invites us into his twilight world? Find out in 1623’s funny and moving exploration of a unique relationship between a fierce drag queen and her anxious alter-ego who join forces to fight tragedy and celebrate queerness.
