ROCK ME IN 2023, WE DO IT FOR THE KIDS!
Well I have got through the first month and a half. I would like to thank a couple of gentleman that have traveled to various seminars. They furthered their education and knowledge for the Shrine. First of all, Bill Thompson and Tony Bachman traveled down to Grapevine Texas and attended the Marketing and Membership Committee meeting. Early reports have them feeling it was a very worthwhile and interesting seminar. Our Recorder, John Whitelock, and Treasurer, Moe Richard will be going to the Recorder and Treasurer seminar and are hopeful that gains the same results as the Membership seminar provided. We have made it a priority this year, to make sure we help in whatever manner there is to further the leadership capabilities of the El Riad Shrine. One of those ways is through sending our Nobles to national and local conventions and seminars.
The Divan had our annual Divan planning session on Wednesday, February 15. We had the meeting at the El Riad Shrine, a wonderful spaghetti dinner was supplied by the Fife And Drum. The theme behind the meeting was communication, communication, communication. We are fortunate to have a highly respected and diverse Divan for 2023 and I am expecting great results this year.
A big thank you to PP Les Kruse for his taking charge of the Sioux Empire on Tap event having a lot of fun whiling earning funds for El Riad. A big shout out to all those that helped. I also want to congratulate the Fife and Drum on a very successful dance with Johnny Holm! There are many exciting things coming up here at the shrine, one of those being the Hospital Board of Governors, our own past potentate, Jim Burma vice chairman of our region will be holding a Townhall meeting at El Riad on May 18. We will have a meal and then a presentation by the Board of Governors. Imperial officers, the Board of Governors, Administrators and other staff from the Twin cities clinic, as well as, various other dignitaries will be in attendance. We will followup with a question and answer period for those in attendance. When the final details come out you will want to get your place reserved for this fantastic opportunity.
We are pushing forward with the bathroom remodeling. This will take place from middle of March to end of April. This is a big project and we are asking for your patience as we continue to make El Riad the place to have a fantastic event.
The Chamber of Commerce will hold their event at El Riad on March 14, a huge thank you to Paul Berndt for championing this event.

EL RIAD MOTOR CORPS
Two fingers down to all of you itching to get back on your bikes for some wind therapy. Spring is just around the corner and Lonnie Albers, our trusty Road Captain, is preparing for the upcoming parade and competition season. A special thanks to the entire MC team involved in another successful Frozen Pub Run. This event was held February 4 with about 76 riders and 3 buses. The buses started and ended at the Crow Bar. The buses took the 76 riders to Kim’s Korner, Fresh Horses and Bottoms up for refreshments during the day and celebration started back at the Crow Bar to complete the event. I want to thank PC Steve Haase and VC Jerry Hauff for helping with registration and helping at the end keep everything in line. Thanks to the bus captains Tom and Jane Anderson, Chuck Ihlen and John Bayer, Jeff & Shannon Joneson. Jeff and Shannon Joneson also ran the raffle board and drawing cards at the end of the night. Thanks to Jan Joehnck at School Bus Inc
EL RIAD CHANTERS
Well the Chanters are back after taking the month of January off. We still have several members living the good life in sunny climates. Wish I was one of them. Remember we meet on Tuesday nights in the El Riad Room, at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us and we encourage everyone who enjoys music to try it. Like Mikey you just might like it too.
Our Christmas party was well attended and the meal was great. The refreshments were cold and room temp as desired. This being the culmination of a long day of set up, Prairie Christmas Performance, Chanters Singing and Clean up. The 2023 Officers were installed and they are. President Evan Brink, Vice President Todd Smith, Secretary Brad Vostad and Treasurer(s) Dan Jones and Doug Schneider.
As I write this we are fast approaching our “ROCK the Shrine” event featuring Pop Rocks, those of you that have heard them know they are terrific. Because you read this
by Bill Thompsonfor lining up the buses. Kevin and Robin Tomshack for the Jell-O shots and everyone who participated. This is a great event each year so keep your schedule open next February to attend. The next event will be our joint Motor Corp / Sprint Car cash raffle. Don’t forget to get your tickets to win $10,000 cash. We will have food and additional prizes during the nights festivities. Looking forward to the summer season? If you are just starting to ride and want to get more comfortable or you have been riding for years and want to challenge yourself to get just a little bit better. I would encourage you to seek out a Motor Corp member. Come to one of our meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Shrine. Plan to join our practice sessions this summer. Your comfort level and the color of your bike is not as important as you desire to be part of a group that works together on and off the street. If you are reading this article you are part of the world’s greatest Philanthropy and a person of great character. I salute you for all you do.
by Evan Brinkin March, I hope you enjoyed the show. Thank you to all the Chanters and helpers from different units. It is greatly appreciated. More to come in the next issue with pictures.
Having forgot to do this in the last article. I want to congratulate the Illustrious PP Kid Slater and his Lady Penny on a wonderful year. We also wish our new Potentate Leo Baumgart a great year for 2023.
Lastly a call for all who have sang with the chanters and all who are singing in the shower, car or garage to join us. Remember you can’t frown if your singing. Join us and smile in 2023.
EL RIAD ORIENTAL BAND
The Oriental Band has been braving the weather and keeping our spirits warm no matter how cold it gets outside. On the plus side we have not had any problem keeping our drinks cool. The Christmas party was held on December 4, 2022 and the officers for 2023 were installed with all due pomp and ceremony. Dan “Alter-boy” Altenberg is the new President of the Oriental Band, Hans Christensen is the new Vice President, and Jamie “Precious” Voight is the new Member-at-Large, may god have mercy on their soles (for all the running they will have to do to keep up with the rest of the band). Steve “Bean” Veenhof will continue as Treasurer and Monty Derousseau will continue as Raja. Joe “Joeish” Alick is the immediate Past President, much to the relief of everyone. Hopes are high that the band will survive the upcoming year with minimal emotion of physical damage.
At the Award Ceremony for 2022 the Dave Dalthorp Award for Playing Ability and Leadership in the Band was bestowed upon Michael “Big Mike” Petterson. The Jerry “Maybasket” Award was presented to Chris Morrison. The Equipment Award was awarded to Hans Christensen who in the spirit of the award tried to lose the award. The Jake Award was received by Mike “Moose” Fitzgerald. The Ambassador Award was given to Tim “Tada” Harsh. The Top Dog Award was achieved by Lee A. Lewis.
The OB hosted the Wednesday night at the Shrine in January with food and fellowship for all. The only exception being Wednesday, January 4, which the snow gods claimed for their own. The annual Chili Cook-Off was held on January 18, congratulations to Big Bob Vanderlinde for taking first place. The OB also bartended for the El Riad
by Lee A. Lewis, ScribeClown Christmas party where some people complained that the drinks tasted “funny.”
The St Patrick’s Day Parade in Sioux Falls is scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2023, step off at 2:00 p.m. at the corner of 13th and Phillips (you know right next to the Shrine). There will be a gathering of the Band at McNally’s Irish Pub at 9:30 a.m. to Ballyhoo at 10:00 a.m. The Band will need to be at the Top Hat (Shrine East) by 12:30 p.m. to get ready for the parade.
We have several other parades already planned for 2023. The Czech Day Parade., in Tabor, SD, on Friday, June 16, step off at 1:00 p.m. The Pote’s Parade will coincide with the Quarry Days Parade, in Del Rapids, SD, on June 24, step off at 10:00 a.m. The Midwest Shrine Association which meets in Alexandria, MN on August 23-26, will have parades on Thursday and Saturday. The bus will leave for MSA on Wednesday August 25 at a time and place TBD. The Dakota Day’s Parade, in Vermillion, SD, will be on October 7, step of TBD.
Other upcoming events scheduled for 2023 are the El Riad Shrine Circus with nine shows April 20 – 23, and the El Riad Spring Ceremonial on May 6. The OB Memorial Gold Tournament is tentatively scheduled for June 1, keep your eyes open for further announcements. Later in the year the Oriental Band Halloween Bash, featuring The Back 40 Boys and On The Fritz, will be held at the El Riad Shrine on October 28. The Oriental Band Christmas Party is scheduled for December 2. A Dive Bar Tour and further parades have not been ruled out.
My favorite winter activity is going back inside”
EL RIAD STEEL DRUM
Greetings and salutations. Ossifer Burtis here. As of the beginning of the year I was voluntold that I would be taking over the quill and inkwell from our large shoed scribe Rico. I may have had one too many and happily agreed to the rather abbreviated nomination process. Those are some big shoes to fill indeed, but I will do my best. I wasn’t able to get an article ready for the February issue of the Cactus so I will bring you up to speed from November.
In November myself, Dennis “Rydim” Verhey, and our now esteemed Potentate Leo Baumgart and our ladies, along with a number of other Potes Party colleagues presented the Masquerade Party. It was a big success with a ton of revelers joining in on the theme! Thank you to all that joined us!
The next morning the Steel Drum Band (hereinafter referred to as the STB) had our Christmas gathering. We switched it up a little and decided to try a Christmas brunch party! It was actually quite a bit of fun and we enjoyed the obligatory egg bake along with a French toast creation that was awesome and guaranteed calorie and sugar free by Tony’s catering and about twenty pounds of bacon! There were plenty of Christmas spirits available for those (me) wanting to celebrate, and we wrapped things up with plenty of time to go home and see the Vikings pull off their miracle win against the Bills!! Unfortunately fate caught up with the Vikings and their season ended in the first round of the playoffs, much to the delight of many of you reading this article right now.
The rest of the month and all of December was spent preparing for our NYE party. Contract negotiations were finalized with the Ron Keel Band, and the hard work of determining advertising budgets and allocations and disseminating of posters began. December 31 arrived and we nervously watched the ticket sales reports and Johnny “Red” Richardson, Larry “Fluff” Miller and myself manned the front door as ticket holders and walk-ins streamed (and at times trickled) in. The Shrine’s own Last Call Band opened for Ron and did their usual fun and entertaining sets to warm up the crowd. The hardcore southern rock fans and Ron Keel followers started flowing in later and filled up the Shrine to rock to the RKB originals and covers. Thank you to those of you that attended as well as those who purchased tables like Asset Protection Services, Sioux Falls best security service, providing only current or retired LE Officers for your security needs (shameless self-promotion).
by Steve “Ossifer” BurtisThere were a number of other units who purchased tables and we greatly appreciate your support. It’s great to see other units purchasing tables to these events to support one another. We need more of this!
Installation was on January 14 and the STB’s own Leo Baumgart was installed as Potentate! We look forward to a year of success and good times as another Steel Drum member leads the El Riad Shrine into the new year! The STB provided entertainment with the rust showing at times. It only gave us more incentive to dust off the drums and get back into practice mode! Our own new leadership also took the helm with new President Bruce “Tassels” Wentzel, VP Todd “Taco” Thoelke, Member at Large Johnny “Red” Richardson, and Secretary/Treasurer Dennis “Rydim” Verhey. With this crew our continued success is guaranteed! We would also like to thank outgoing President George “Mayor” Hamilton for his impeccable and inspiring leadership!
As we head into March our goals are to increase meeting attendance so as to have meaningful and productive practice. As they say, “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes improvement.” As representatives of the El Riad Shrine we, and I believe all parade units, want to represent our organization well and inspire non-Shriners to consider us as a worthwhile group to become a part of. Also, if you are not part of a unit yet, or are looking to make a move to a different one, possibly one where you don’t have to march in sweltering hot weather, and instead can stand and play an instrument while being leisurely transported along the parade route on a custom made trailer which is the envy of many units, please consider the STB and maybe join us at one of our meetings on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Thursday of each month.
We continue to work on our parade schedule which will no doubt include our usual (weather permitting) parades such as Brandon Loyalty Days, Milford Pioneer Days, Worthington Turkey Day, and Pote’s Parade, as well as others still in the works.
I apologize if this, my first, Cactus article got a little long-winded. I will work to make it shorter next time with some editing help from Rico (if the Cactus editor hasn’t already trimmed it down).

SHRINE NOTICE
by El Riad Shrine Building & Entertainment CommitteeThe restroom remodel project in the Shrine building is scheduled for March 27 through May 4. The Shrine will remain open throughout the project and activities such as unit/club meetings, Wednesday Socials, etc. will continue. Construction work will be staged to provide as much access to restroom facilities as possible; however, there will be certain times when facilities are not available. Signage will be displayed to direct you to open restrooms.
Thank you for your patience during the project.
by Alex Richardand ready. As much as we all love the snow in the winter, I believe most of us are all ready for spring. Between the Cash Raffle and March bars, we hope to get a chance to start maintenance on the Sprint Cars as well. It will be difficult to burn rubber, if we don’t have the tires to do so.
We will not have any formal meetings this month due to the commitment on Wednesdays. However, all Nobles are welcome to come down for a great Fun Raiser with great food, and friendly bartenders. Feel free to ask any Sprint Car member about attending a meeting, or joining us on a maintenance night to see what our unit is all about. Sprint Cars are welcoming anyone interested in becoming a member!
BOARD OF GOVERNORS: MAY 18, 2023
The SC-TC Board of Governors will hold a town hall meeting at El Riad Shrine on Thursday, May 18. The meeting will host all temples in the SC-TC service area and provide a forum for the exchange of information between the temples and the Board of Governors on hospital operations. It will also provide a forum for individual Shriners to ask questions of the board members. A dinner will be held that evening at El Riad Shrine, and all Shriners and ladies are invited to attend. Details about the dinner will be in the April Cactus.
MOTIVATION???
How do I motivate my unit? If you are a unit leader this year, you may be asking yourself this question. (If things are going well, support your brothers and stay out of their way.) If things are not going well, keep reading…
Having to ask a motivational question is usually a management fail, either yours or the last unit leader. Even asking how to motivate Shriners puts the focus in the wrong place. Shriners are not employees. Heck, we even pay money to belong. Everyone of us is here for their own reason and we all want to make a difference in our own way.
Decades of research has shown whether people do a good or bad job - - - has little to do with being motivated
by Bill Schepeleror unmotivated. “People do what is in their own best interest to do.”
That could include more or less responsibility, depending on each brother’s work schedule. It could involve travel or exclude travel depending on their home situation. Each member is unique and different. But each member wants to contribute in some way.
So when you find yourself wondering how to motivate your members, ask this question; “How can we inspire each other to do our best work because it’s in our own best interest and for the betterment of our Fraternity?”
EL RIAD RITUALISTIC UNIT
The Ritualistic Unit had a busy 2022. We helped create 31 new El Riad Nobles in 2022. A total of 21 Novices were created at the Spring 2022 Ceremonial, 7 at the Fall 2022 Ceremonial, and 5 each on Cold Sands in June and December 2022. We are looking forward to the 2023 Ceremonials on May 6 and November 4.
Our biggest upcoming fundraising event is selling concessions at the Greater Sioux Falls Model Train Show on March 25 and 26, 2023 at the Sioux Falls MultiCultural Center (the old Coliseum) at 515 North Main Avenue in Sioux Falls. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. both days. The cost of entrance is $5. Noble Scott Nesbitt is a member of the Dakota Southeastern Division Train Club and has been instrumental in having his fellow Nobles from the Ritualistic Unit sell James Hoy’s Famous Taverns, All Beef Hot Dogs, and Ham and Cheese Sandwiches for the train show since 2017.
Our Unit Officers for 2023 are Tom Lewis; President, Lee Lewis, Director; Tim Schendel, Secretary/Treasurer, and James Hoy, At Large. By an Act of God our Unit’s 990 and ALL Calendar Stubs and Money were submitted to the Office this year by January 31, 2023. We hope this trend continues.
Like all Units, the Ritualistic Unit is ALWAYS looking for new and enthusiastic members. We are the best fed Unit in El Riad with James Hoy as our “Entertainment Director”. We could always use more help with acting, props, lighting, effects, and sound. We are proud of what we do and we are at the service of the Potentate for any Cold Sands that he and the Membership Committee may plan.
EL RIAD CLOWNS
The award winning El Riad Shrine Clowns have already had a great start to the 2023 year. To ring in the new year the unit kicked things off with their Christmas party and awards ceremony where we saw several worthy nobels take home some notable hardware! 2022 Big Clown James “Buzz” Rollason presented awards to Evan “Lectro” Brink for the Brown Nose Award, Matt “Cha Ching” Snowden for the Dick “Anticipation” Reid H.E.R.O Award, Tyco “Bimbo” Clausen for Apprentice of the Year, and Darin “Turbo” Groos for the Clown of the Year award.
After a few libations were had some other Clown fun ensued prior to the swearing in of the 2023 Officers. Your 2023 “Big” Clown is Kevin “Wingnut” Wingert, Little Clown Darin “Turbo” Groos, and Secretary Matt “Doughboy” Johnson; Matt “Cha Ching” Snowden will take over as Treasurer. A ceremonious pie to the face of the officers from their ladies concluded the festivities before the nobility retired to the Oasis to discuss the coming 2023 year and the goals to which we strive to achieve.
The award winning El Riad Shrine Clowns, under the leadership of Wingnut, intend to parade through several towns and hearts of the young as well as young at heart until our fancy new bus can’t take us anymore; we look forward to serving Illustrious Sir Leo and his Lady at the Sioux Falls and surrounding community circuses bringing smiles to all as well. If ever in need of a Clown for a smile, parade, bartender, card dealer, or a good old fashioned birthday song, don’t hesitate to ask! We hope you all have a more gooder year and remember, if there’s ever too many Clowns, go for the jugular!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
Members of the El Riad Membership committee and leaders from the three Lodges in town met February 2 to discuss degree work schedules and the upcoming Masonic Festival March 31-April 1. The Masonic Festival has become a very big deal with the potential of raising 3035 new Master Masons this spring..
The cooperation between the two groups is unprecedented. Everyone recognizes we are much stronger working towards our shared purpose together, which has become a guiding principle in coordinating activities. After all,we are all Master Mason brothers and share an amazing fellowship unlike any other. All Masons and Nobles should be impressed with the commitment these men share and the leadership they demonstrate.
Its our experience as brothers and the difference its made in our collective lives that will be featured throughout the Festival. There is a tremendous amount of planning that goes into the Masonic Festival with organizers making sure the candidate’s experience is a top priority. Planners will have a full schedule and are also taking steps to ensure things stay on time. All activities will be held at the Masonic Center due to construction at the Shrine Center.

ISSAC’S CONFIDENCE SHINES
Isaac is diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).
OI is a genetic bone disorder that is present at birth. It is more commonly known as brittle bone disease. A child born with OI may have soft bones that break easily or bones that are not formed normally.
When he was 3 months old, Isaac suffered his first fracture when he broke his ankle. He then had his second fracture when he was 11 months old. It was when his family took him to the UCLA Medical Center that they were referred to Shriners Children’s Southern California. Here, Isaac has been treated by pediatrician Manu S. Raam, M.D., FAAP, and has a care team with a comprehensive plan to help him through his patient journey.
Today Isaac enjoys his life just like any other kid. He enjoys watching sports, and his favorite teams are the Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bulls. In his spare time, Isaac also loves to build models.
This past summer, Isaac joined the Patient Ambassador Program and was able to represent Shriners Children’s Southern California at the annual big big truck show called Truckin’ for Kids in Irwindale. Not only did he get to see the many big rigs and their amazing modifications, he saw them go head-to-head in drag races! Isaac was also in charge of choosing the winning truck for the coolest looking rig in the lot. His smiles throughout the day were contagious, and the light in Isaac was shining when the trucks were revving their engines with demonstrations.
Shriners Children’s is able to give Isaac confidence and build his self-esteem to take on anything he wants in life. As soon as he walks through the doors of the facility, he can feel everyone’s warm embrace. It makes what would seem like a scary experience into something a lot easier. With the amazing care and love that Isaac receives at Shriners Children’s, his light can shine brighter than ever.
GIVE $100 AND FEEL LIKE A MILLION! Join the Shrine’s $100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” — Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family.
Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund.
Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care.
Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies.

EL RIAD FIFE & DRUM
Wow, can our first three months of the year get any crazier! By the time you read this, we’ll have hosted our 25th Johnny Holm event on February 11. Without question, this event has transformed our group and provided a revenue platform we never imagined. This year, we have 10 “Backers” that each contributed $750 direct to Shriner’s Healthcare. Please see our thank you flyer for the companies making this important donation. A special thank you to Wayne Johnson & his Lady Karen for also making a backer contribution. They have been Fife members for many, many years and we can’t thank them enough for their very generous contribution.
Regarding Backer shout out’s, Brad Streich secured SIX backers including his own company. Great effort by Brad! Joe Greve, Randy Schilling, and Cory Gray also secured company donations. In doing so, they raised a total of $7,500 directly to Shriner’s Healthcare using our event platforms as a way to thank the various backers. Over the last six years, we’ve raised almost $35,000 for Shriner’s Healthcare via our Backer program...Incredible!
Speaking of Cory Gray, he almost single-highhandedly sold all 37 reserved tables and both upper rooms three weeks before the Johnny Holm event! This is an amazing accomplishment by any standard. And certainly, this job is not as easy as Cory makes it look as a lot of time and effort go into this kind of success. Cory and his Lady Jen will also he hosting a Rush Party to entertain new Shrine member prospects February 24. Can’t thank them enough for their commitment to our group.
There are so many members to thank for all the work they pour into our Johnny Holm event. Certainly our
by Bruce Nortonofficers (Scott Nepp, Dan Nichols, and Tim Voegele) pour a ton of time into the various preparations with Craig “Roscoe” Ross handling all the ticket sales, and Darrell “Admiral” Griggs taking care of all the AV and social media stuff to name a few. Thanks to everyone for making the 25th annual Johnny Holm party the best yet!
February is also the month we host Wednesday Bar. Kevin and Robin Tomshack provided the first delicious meal of the month, donating their time and costs back to the Fife and Drum. Very generous of them...Thank you Tomshack’s! The Hillbilly’s will be hosting next, followed by Brad Streich’s famous spaghetti dinner followed by Mike “Mofo” Fitzgerald’s famous Tavern’s. Without question, the Fife’s have the best food lineup of any group all year!
Speaking of Mike “Mofo” Fitzgerald, he had hip replacement surgery in late January and while his recovery hasn’t been that quick, he continues to improve and should be much better by the last Wednesday in February. Get better soon Mofo!
Finally, it is time to start preparing your livers for our big, 19th Annual St Patty’s Day Bash! on March 18. Will also be the day for our famous Shamrock Shootout Beer Pong Tourney. Please see our event flyer and beer pong sign up sheet in this Cactus. The fabulous party band ECLIPSE will be performing after Cory Gray who performs after beer pong. Will have plenty of food and green beer all day with doors opening at 11:00 a.m....See you there!
