ROCK ME IN 2023, WE DO IT FOR THE KIDS!
ow I can’t believe 2023 is here! I want to say how honored and humbled I am the nobility has given me this magnificent privilege of serving as your Potentate. I will work my hardest in maintaining El Riad’s awesome reputation as “The greatest Temple in all of Shrinedom” Lady Debbie and I look forward to our mission and will do our best to fully promote and advance the Shrine philanthropy and fraternity.
Let’s start by sending out a huge thank you and job well done to Illustrious Sir PP Jim Slater and his Lady Penny The amazing El Riad Divan is ready and able to move forward with the expectations set forth by the leadership and Nobility. A big welcome to our newest members of the Divan, Outer Guard Brian ‘Sticky’ Schultz (Lady Jill). Brian served as the Chief of Staff last year and did a marvelous job. Our Chief of Staff for 2023 is Todd Schmidt (Lady Laura), who served as Asst. Chief of Staff in 2022. We will welcome Chris ‘Morrie’ Morrison as the Chief Potes’ Aid, shepherding the hardest working wild bunch known to most as the Potes’ aids. Our new Public Relations Director is highly qualified Reid Jensen and back at his natural position of the finest Chaplain in the Midwest George Hamilton (Lady Becky).
The Shrine is moving towards more of a fun and family theme, still with our mission of the Hospitals and the kids. Keep this in mind as you think about joining in the fellowship on Wednesdays or anytime, we gather to celebrate this fantastic Philanthropy. Bring the family down to the shrine and show them the fun. Let’s all make an effort to be more involved, come to a dance, work the Circus, join a committee, or join a unit, maybe just visit a unit; they all welcome visitors. Bottom line lets just be involved, that is what the Shrine is all about.
I want to thank all who took part in the yearly meeting and the installation, what a great night. MSA Midwinter Session will be in Alexandria, MN February 23 through 25, with Imperial Session in Charlotte, NC July 2-6, 2023.

EL RIAD MOTOR CORPS
022, another year has come and gone with much to be thankful for. Our Unit leadership, Jeff Landborg, Jerry Hauff and Chuck Ihlen did a fantastic, collaborative job, along with our elected members at large, John Bayer, Gene Peska and Jeff Rentschler, leading this group through another fantastic year. Winning at Imperial and then a brand new 6 man team winning at MSA. Wow. Thanks to all of them for their commitment. We would also like to thank the Christmas committee for the Sprint Cars, A.J. Richard, Noah Richard and Jay Pifer, for putting together a great inclusive event. Fun was had by all. Well done guys. Looking ahead to 2023 we are blessed to have Jerry Hauff as our Vice-Commander, Lonnie Albers leading as our Road Captain and Chuck Ihlen with his steady hand on the financial accounts. The aforementioned members at large from last year will continue their leadership on the executive team.
EL RIAD CHANTERS
by Bill ThompsonWe are in heavy planning for our Cash Raffle coming up March 24. Once again we will be selling 500 tickets in partnership with the Sprint Car Unit. The tickets are $100 each and can be obtained from any Motor Corp member. The grand prize is $10,000 cash (withholding tax already paid) 2nd $1000, 3rd $750 4th $500, 5th $250 along with a 50/50 drawing and games throughout the night coordinated by our emcee Past Potentate, Illustrious Sir Maury Richard. Food provided and fun for everyone. Doors open at 6:30. Lonnie Albers and Jerry Hauff will be representing our unit during MSA Winter Session in Alexandria. MN. This is a walk down memory lane for our Road Captain. This is his home town. Can’t wait to meet some of the locals in the summer to get some inside stuff on Lonnie…
Until next time and remember, Past Potentate Illustrious Sir Jim (Kid) Slater will keep the pickle until summer unless one of you try to move your bike around in the garage.
by Evan Brinkecember has left us with an angry Mother Nature, if we get out from under all the snow she dumped on us, January could be a good month. Honestly, we can use the moisture. I don’t mind the cold but I am definitely over shoveling snow.
December was busy and we were able to make two of the three singouts at the retirement homes. We first went to Grand Living at Lake Lorraine then to Trail Ridge off Ralph Rogers. Unfortunately we were unable to make Meadow Stone because of road conditions. We had to keep telling Bob, Fez not fur.
2023 looks to be a good year and with the effort of all of our members support we hope to gain back some singers who for reasons of Covid and personal reasons were
unable to come sing in 2022. We are putting forth an effort this year to gain 3 new members. Please consider joining us on Tuesday Evenings at 7:00 P.M. in the Unit Room by the Office. We also invite past members to come back and sing. Remember you can’t sing with a frown on your face!
EL RIAD CLASSIE AUTOS
s the charter president of the Classie Auto Unit many of you have known me as a auto hobbyist and collector.
It seems there isn’t a year, make, or body style that I’m not interested in. From a 1911 Maxwell touring car to a vintage Jaguars or Crossfire sports car you will find me.
Ten years ago Motor Market did a story on some of my cars. The ending statement was a question what would you like to own next? My comment was a “L-29 Cord”, “A guy can dream can’t he.”
For several years I’d attend the Hershey, PA. car show,
by Gary Ohnstadswap meet, and auto sale. Several years ago a couple guys put a 8x10 photo of a L-29 Cord under my pillow as I was always talking of owning one Someday.
Well this past summer my dream came true. I was able to purchase a L-29 Cord from a Florida collector. This is the first production front wheel drive car in the USA and thus allowed the car to be 10 inches lower than its competitors. Thus long, low and stylish. They are few in existence and the only one in South Dakota.
EL RIAD BACK 40 BOYS
e had a great time playing at a neighborhood Octoberfest party in Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 15. The weather turned out to be accommodating for the outdoor venue and we hope the event will work out for us again next year. Speaking of October, the Back 40 Boys once again opened up the Oriental Band’s Halloween Bash for Omaha’s party band, On the Fritz. It was again definitely one of the most fun gigs of our year and we’d like to thank Stan and Wayne Fritz for letting us plug into their equipment and for during our sound mixing. It was a well attended event and we are already looking forward to the same program next year! We will be
finishing up our year playing for the Oriental Band Christmas Party on Saturday, December 3.
We would like to thank Illustrious Sir, Jim Slater and the 2022 Divan for their leadership this year. We’d also like to wish everyone a lovely holiday season and a great 2023! Due to future scheduling conflicts, we are in search of a new drummer that is either already a Shriner or is willing to pursue becoming one. Please contact Clay Wilhelm at (605) 759-2966 with inquiries.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
022 was a solid year for El Riad membership. We were the top Temple in our Midwest Association for membership and recognized nationally by being one of only 21 Temples earning Gold status for membership. These achievements don’t just happen, they come with a lot of work by a dedicated group of El Riad Nobles. Each has an assignment in the categories of Mentoring, Recruitment/Retention, Unit/ Club Representation, Lodge Representation, and Public Relations. So, here’s a big shout out to those brothers who are helping to make a difference...They are: Bill Thompson, John Archer, Charles Brown, Tony Bachman, Dave Bangasser, Paul Berndt, George Hamilton, James Hoy, Reid Jensen, Terry Knutso, Aaron Neiman, Bruce Norton, Kent Quail, Jayson Strauss, Jeremy Swenson, and Bob Uecker. In different ways, at different times throughout the year, each of these high quality men have devoted their time and talents to the results noted above. Thank you is just not big enough for all they do.
Our year could not have succeeded at the level it did without the involvement and degree coordination of all three Sioux Falls Lodges. The leadership of the Lodges were absolutely stellar and must be commended. And how about the great success of the Masonic Festivals this past year!
Speaking of the Masonic Festivals , more thanks are due to Dan Nace, Aaron Zahn, Dane Bloch and the

entire Grand Lodge team for all the hard work and coordination of the Spring and Fall Masonic Festivals. Especially Tony Bachman, Paul Berndt and Bill Thompson for leading the Membership team, helping coordinate degree work, and working hard to manage prospective Masons/Shriner’s.
We also like to congratulate six new Nobles that went through our December Warm Sands: Chris Vanderwal, Wilmer Ohlendorf, Don Norton, Jeff Gould, Sinan Taskin, and Adam Cooper. Welcome these new brothers into our great fraternity when you get a chance!
Finally, we have a simple ask. Please commit to helping raise a new Mason and Shriner in 2023. You can contact any of the Nobles listed above for whatever help you may need and remember our two best resources are the 3rd Wednesday of each month Rush Party and the Membership section on the El Riad website. Now, here’s to a terrific 2023!
EL RIAD FIFE & DRUM
ow, what a year and what a terrific holiday party to celebrate our Fife and Drum brotherhood! Unfortunately, our outgoing Brigadier, Raybob Henry could not make it, but incoming Brigadier Scott Nepp handled things perfectly. Many thanks to our other officers, Dan Nichols, Left-Tenant, and Tim Voegele, our new Sargent-Major for all the work that goes into such a high quality event. Also, many thanks to the elite Chanter’s bar team for serving our refreshing beverages! Oh, and least we not forget thanking Potentate Jim Slater for helping to headline our party.
Many highlights to report, starting with our coFifers of the Year, Cory Gray and Randy Schilling. These guys really went over and above in their contributions throughout the year. This is very prestigious recognition of all they do, so congratulations to you both! Also, the Bungling Bugler Award is no longer a traveling trophy as Mike Archer earned this coveted award two years in a row. Mike did the right thing by blaming others for his “bungle”,
but we all know better!
Another highlight was the 90th birthday recognition of one of our three founding members, Walt Leyse. Hard to believe he started the Fife and Drum with two other Nobles over 50 years ago. We are lucky Walt stays involved even to this day. It was also great to see “old-timers” like
by Bruce NortonCliff Hicks and Kim Sigler on hand. Kim is really doing well and so wonderful to party with him again.
We hit the ground running again in 2023 by hosting February bar and our Johnny Holm party in February. Those are followed by our big St. Patty’s Day Bash in March. Hard to fathom this will be the 25th anniversary of our Johnny Holm event. Thanks to Cory Gray, we had 28 reserved tables sold by the first of January. Additionally, we’ve added eight “backers” who each donate $750 directly to Shriner’s Healthcare. Hard to be humble when we set the event success bar so high!
Thank you is not a big enough word for the commitment Ray “RayBob” Henry has poured into our group the last three years. As outgoing Brigadier, Ray will now join the elite group of brothers that have led our merry band of high quality men. We know Scott Nepp will be equally terrific and happy to see Tim Voegele join our officer ranks. So lucky we have these Nobles, along with Dan Nichols (new Left-tenant), to lead us in 2023.
Finally, we invite all Nobles to join us during February bar, and especially, at our Johnny Holm party (see our flyer for details). Being its the 25th Anniversary, this is a party you don’t want to miss!
EL RIAD BIG BAND
appy New Year! We purchased the old Chanters trailer and rebuilt it just in time for the Parade of Lights at Thanksgiving led by Illustrious Sir, Jim Slater. Together with the Clowns, representing El Riad Shrine we won the Downtown Sioux Falls Award!
The Big Band is done with dances for 2022, but already requested for Dance Club in January and Last Call finished the year with two “gigs”. We played for the Abu Bekr (Sioux City) Shrine Christmas Party on Dec 17 and had a great time entertaining about 150 people. I heard a rumor we would be invited back! We also played at the Steel Drum unit New Year’s Eve Party, opening for the Ron Keel Band. We had a great time and the people danced!
The summer of 2023 is already filling up with requests for Last Call. Several are “repeat” performances. We have partnered with LLOYD Companies, beginning in 2023, to increase the amount we collect in our “tip” jar when we perform. Lloyds has agreed to match the year donations up to $5,000, so we will be able to present lots of money for the Children’s Transportation Fund at the 2023 Fall ceremonial. (Big thanks to Chris Thorkelsen, President of Lloyd Companies !) Our 2022 officers, John Bayer (Pres), Lloyd Schipper (VP), Ken Hoyne, (Treas) and Dave Rowe (Sec) have agreed to stay on for 2023!

Getting to the
THE CACTUS INTERVIEW
What keeps you in Sioux Falls? I work for a fabulous company, and that is a big part of why I am in Sioux Falls. The overall quality of life, and size of the city are also big to us. Not too big, but not too small. Sioux Falls has all the things larger metro areas can offer.
Who was your Masonic sponsor, when did you join, and why did you become a Master Mason? John Archer. John worked on me for several years, but I finally took the steps and wish I had sooner.
Who was your Shrine sponsor, when did you join, and why did you become a Shriner? Again, my sponsor was John Archer. John did a great job in enlightening me on what it is we as Shriners do and the Shrine Hospital system. I was singing in a classical group that same year and learned that the Shrine had a men’s chorus. I was sold! Helping kids and being able to sing with a terrific group of men has been a great experience.
What is your favorite part of being a Masonic Shriner? As said above, being part of an organization that does meaningful work on behalf of kids that need the help. The fellowship and fraternal interactions with my unit and the overall group of Nobles is fun and has made me a better person.
What units and clubs have you been and/ or currently are a member? Currently I remain active in the Chanters. I have also been a part of the Membership committee, golf unit, and Shrine Football Game committees.
Tell us about your time as Chief of Staff for Illustrious Sir Ken Steele, things that went well, what were the challenges, and what it meant to you: Ken was a great Potentate! One that really had a passion for our fraternity and the work we do. Being Chief of Staff for Ken was very rewarding. I became even more knowledgeable on all the workings of the Shrine. I had never regularly attended monthly Stated Meetings. As Chief of Staff, I attended all of them, and really found them to be a great way to stay informed and offer suggestions. We all as Nobles should make a better effort to attend the monthly Stated Meetings. The challenges were mostly with scheduling and timing, but the benefits of having served as Ken’s Chief of Staff far outweighed the challenges.
What committees and roles have you been a part of over the years? And what was your favorite memory? See above. Lots of many fun memories. The times when people stop me in a parade, or after any Shrine event and thank me for being part of an organization that helps kids are all “feel good” events!
What has been your involvement with the shrine and its units/committees meant to you? Getting involved helps me as a noble be more informed and updated on the happenings in the Shrine. I do not feel I am an effective member of any group if I do not stay involved and do all I can to stay informed.
How does your Lady feel about your Shrine involvement? She has embraced it what I am doing. We both can look
back and honestly say that we have made lifelong friends due to my involvement.
Describe El Riad Shrine in five words: Meaningful, impactful, fun, fellowship, rewarding.
What would you tell shriners and their families about joining our family, fraternity and philanthropy? If you are looking for
an opportunity to be part of a wonderful organization, please consider the Masons/ Shriners. If you are like me, you will wish that you had found them sooner. If you are one that has been pondering the decision for some time, join! You will wish you done it sooner.

GIVE $100 AND FEEL LIKE A MILLION! Join the Shrine’s $100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” — Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family.
Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund.
Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care.
Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies.

CAMDEN DRESSES AS HIS FAVORITE CLINICIAN
amden is receiving specialized burn care at Shriners Children’s Boston. When Camden arrived for a recent appointment at Shriners Children’s Boston, employees thought they must be seeing double!
Much to their delight, Camden was dressed as Chief of Staff Robert L. Sheridan, M.D. His visit was right around Halloween and Cam wanted to mark the occasion with a holiday costume celebrating one of his favorite clinicians. Scrubs, a white coat and stethoscope completed the look.
Cam was 18 months old when he was burned after accidentally touching the hot engine of a push leaf blower while his family was working at their property. Cam’s parents, Erin and Jeff, knew that his hand needed immediate attention and took him to a local hospital. Clinicians there examined Cam’s injury, determined he would need specialized burn care, and arranged for a transport to Shriners Children’s Boston. When the family arrived, Cam’s care team was waiting in his room. After examining his burn injury, staff members debrided and bandaged the wound. Debriding a burn wound involves removing the damaged tissue, which helps with healing. The next day Cam was fitted for a hand cast and started physical therapy. Cam was in the hospital for three days, and then traveled to Shriners Children’s Boston from his home in Western Massachusetts every other day for about two months.
Now almost 5 and past the initial phase of his recovery, Cam returns to Shriners Children’s Boston for follow up visits every 4-6 months. His care team regularly assesses how well his hand is healing and closely monitors its range of motion. As a child grows, their burn scars do not grow with them and follow-up procedures are sometimes necessary to achieve optimum use. The degree of range of motion that Cam achieves with his injured hand will help determine future treatment.
As Erin reflected on the accident that injured Cam, she noted, “You never think this could be your child, that your baby could be hurt like this. However, there is a light to be seen through this grim event.”
Erin shared that, especially in the first few days after Cam’s injury, talking to other parents of children with burn injuries helped. “I will never forget going to the play area
by Shrinerschildren.orgwith Cam on the second day and talking to a mother who had been there for three months with her infant.” Erin recalls being struck by the progress the baby had made, as well as the child’s happiness and excitement. “It gave me hope that someday Cam too would be able to use his hands again as he once had,” she said.
The Shriners Children’s Boston child life specialists were very important in making Cam feel comfortable during such a scary time. Erin said that they were particularly impactful when Cam needed a skin graft last year. “I can’t imagine having gone through this experience without them,” she added.
Erin also shared how her family’s time at Shriners Children’s Boston has given them hope in ways they were not expecting. “Being at Shriners has given me hope in more ways than just with Camden. It has given me hope for our future society. Watching the children interact with one another, not judging each other, not letting languages be a barrier and immediately accepting each other as friends proved that there is hope for our world,” Erin said.
The family has many favorite moments at Shriners
Children’s, including attending celebrations around the holidays and participating in pet therapy. And of course, Cam has loved the Halloween celebrations. For parents of children who have sustained burn injuries, the journey toward healing and recovery can sometimes feel very long. For Erin and her family, it sometimes felt like they were in a dark tunnel. “But if you stop and think of the bright lights guiding you to the sunshine, you realize there are more than you can count. The doctors, nurses, therapists, security staff, child life specialists, administrative assistants and all other employees give you the willpower to stay strong for your child and for yourself,” she said.
For Cam, some employees in particular have really made an impression. “Cam’s physical therapist Aimee and his surgeon Dr. Sheridan have truly changed our lives. They both have been with Cam since day one. He asks for them every time we have an appointment in ‘my Boston’ as he calls it. They are our family’s guardian angels! He also adores Ernesto in patient registration. He loves to talk to him when we check in and out,” said Erin.
When Cam came in for that clinic appointment dressed as Dr. Sheridan, he made sure to visit with some of his Shriners Children’s Boston friends, who were touched by the creativity and thoughtfulness of his costume.
