ROCK ME IN 2023, WE DO IT FOR THE KIDS!

Moving through an exciting busy summer. Jeff Landborg and crew have finished up the Circus’ for the year in Yankton with Clay Wittmeier - Yankton Circus Chairman along with the hard working bunch of Nobles, family and friends. Winner had a hard working crew make it all come together with Doug & Linda Nelson and Jim Halverson and the whole group bring it all together. Both are held in outdoor facilities which certainly adds a whole different level experience for both the circus performers and the circus goers. A great time for all and we owe a huge thank you to all those Nobles, family and friends that volunteer and make all that fun possible.

The annual Potes Parade was on a beautiful Saturday afternoon June 24. I was able to scratch off an item on my bucket list with a ride atop the infamous Stagecoach along with my two grandchildren Jack and Charlee. Thank you Horse Corp for the opportunity, what a wonderful experience that was for the kids and I. A big thank you to Todd Schmidt-Chief of Staff, Dave Murphy-Assistant Chief of Staff, Chris “Morrie” Morrison-Chief Potes Aid and his band of Potes aids, and all of the others making the day possible and a success, super job by all. The Venue, our new name for renting the Shrine, now has a sales person. Denise Richard has been hired and she is raring to go with

tons of great ideas and the enthusiasm to make it happen, welcome aboard Denise.

The 2023 Twin Cities Children Shrine Health care Gala was held on June 2. A couple of El Riad Nobles won the trip to the Gala through the drawing. Marv and lady Deb Lovro and Mike and lady Sherry Olawsky accompanied several others for the night to Minneapolis. What a wonderful Gala, fantastic food, fellowship and fund raising time was enjoyed by all.

We made our trip to the Imperial Session in Charlotte, NC July 1. We took a small contingent due to the distance, we had our four Iowa Corp representatives myself, Chief Rabban-Doug Kristenson, Assistant Raban-Mark Richard, High Priest and Prophet-Scott Denney and four Colorado representatives, Ill Sir John Whitelock PP, Ill Sir Jim Burma PP, Ill Sir Tom Anderson PP and Ill Sir Jim Slater PP and to round off the team our Chief of StaffTodd Schmidt. We had a fun and exciting time while taking care of business. There were a couple of important items on the call. The biggest of them would probably be the increase in our “per capita dues to Imperial”. This one has come up over the years and has not made the required 2/3 vote needed to pass until this year after a fiercely fought battle and a couple of parliamentary discussions that carried from one day to the next. Finally after much discussion it was passed to increase the per capita by an additional $20 per Shriner. There really wasn’t much choice with the membership down over the years and inflation raising its brutal head.

It’s hard to believe we are this far into the year, it is going so fast, but loving every minute (as an illustrious Past Potentate once quoted). We are looking forward to the upcoming Nobles party September 23, come cruise through the decades with us! Family picnic days on July 23 will have come and gone by the time this gets print, I hope each of you were able to make it. We have finalized plans for our Potentates trip, Doug and I have settled on Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a destination. We are excited the trip is turning out to be a wonderful and fun destination and at very reasonable rate!! The trip is set for January 2330, 2024. This will be great time, let’s see how many we can get together and make it phenomenal party! Well that’s all for now, until next month, yours in the Faith.

EL RIAD SPRINT CARS

Wow summer has flown buy!!! We had a great turnout for the Potes parade in Dell Rapids. Afternoon was our annual pool party at Mark and Denise Richard’s,  thank you for hosting.

We hit the streets of Milford and had a cookout for the unit and invited our Motor Corps to join us.

Competition practice continues for the Sprint Cars and parades are slowing down for the month of August as we are focusing more on MSA at the end of the month.

It has been a long time tradition from my fellow brothers of the Oriental band to spray their gold shoes in the Potes parking spot. I consider it a badge of honor to have been honored. Thanks to the boys of the OB.

I know I am missing more but it happens when I pushing it off till the last minute,  thanks Kent Quail for the email reminder.

Enjoy the rest of summer!!

EL RIAD MOTOR CORPS

Summer is in full swing for the Motor Corp. Road Captain Lonnie Albers has us parading in some new and familiar places, brining excitement and awareness to the communities for El Riad Shrine.

Our June meeting was held at the practice field. Chuck Ihlen prepared burgers and brats with all the sides. Lonnie had the refreshments ready and fun was had by all. It was nice to see everyone there chatting around the camp chairs. It was nice to see some of the ladies at the meeting. John Egan and his wife actually rode the bikes to the meeting which was great and Ann Albers, our very own Mrs. Road Captain was able to attend.

All of the attention is focused now on finishing up a couple parades and getting some practice in for MSA in Alexandria MN and CSSA- Central States Shrine Association in Omaha.

EL RIAD CHANTERS

Hello All. Hope you all have all your fingers left after the 4th of July holiday. It’s wondrous that families and friends at gatherings and parties can enjoy each others company and eat to many Burgers and Brats, laugh together, cry together, pray together and be proud to be Americans. We always go home happy after the fireworks.

The Chanters have been working hard on our music for the 20th of July at Mt Rushmore as we will be singing at the amphitheater for Jeff Gould’s production of Americas Story. We will be joined by our friends from The Fife and Drum. There will be pictures to follow along with a You Tube Video. We also will be at the Minnehaha Masonic Lodge Celebration with the National Anthem on July 15, hope we will have seen a lot of you there.

We gave a very good performance of the National Anthem at the ABA convention with the help of a very

It will be a tough run but Jerry Hauff, Aaron Neiman, Jeff Landborg, Steve Haase, Chris (chilly) Hahn, Jim Slater and Tom Anderson, along with Lonnie Albers and Dave Murphy will be able to continue our commitment to winning for El Riad Shrine. We have not competed in CSSA since 2019 and that was some kind of fun. Central States Shrine Association is comprised of 22 to 25 Shrine Temples throughout the middle and southern US. It was fun competing against some of those groups we have never seen before. Either way we came home with a truck load of trophies back then and we hope to repeat that performance. If you would like to watch practice or brush up your riding skills please contact one of us for a schedule of our practice times.

Enjoy your ride and be safe.

good sound system. Big Thank You to Dave Bangasser for arranging that outing. Thank you also to the Chanters that showed for a weekday morning to sing. We were able to sing at the Canaries Stadium on June 16. Made for a busy Month for the Chanters with Tuesday rehearsals, Wednesday Oasis meals and bartending along with a couple sing outs. Thank you to all.

Once again I want to invite any of you that like to sing, who sang in high school, who sing in church, and even those who sing in the car to come down to the shrine on a Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. and sit in with us. We want you to have a good time and enjoy the time with us. Our schedule is easy. (Every Tuesday, come when you can,) Remember “You can’t sing WITHOUT A SMILE on your face”

ACROSS THE DECADES

25 Years Ago, August 1998

The Corn Palace Hillbillies participated in their inaugural parade at the Fish Days festivities in Lake Andes. Turnout for the first parade was very good as 16 nobles participated. There were 12 hillbillies riding scooters and 4 aboard the flatbed Ford truck. The unit received numbers “thank-you’s” for attending the parade and acceptance by the crowd was great. The unit was favored by a very nice introduction by the parade announcer, and the announcer also praised the wonderful medical care provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children. Special thanks were given to Noble Wayne Nelson of Lake Andes for allowing a group of hillbillies to headquarter at his home. A good time was had by all.

The Southwest Minnesota Shrine Club is making plans for a special day of golf, a pork chop feed, and an evening out in Pipestone for the “Song of Hiawatha” pageant on the 50th anniversary of that production. Several openings for golf, plenty of reserved seats at the pageant, great food and the opportunity for all nobles and ladies to attend are the highlights of the day The special pork chop feed, being served at the Pipestone Country Club isbeing provided and cooked by the Pipestone Pork Producers.

50 Years Ago, August 1973

The chairman of the special activities committee, Oriental Guide Curt Shupe, made all the necessary arrangements for the Shrine Family Picnic held in the Sherman Park area just south of the zoo. It was well attended by the nobles, ladies and families. The main attraction for the children was the drawing for a beautiful bicycle that was graciously done by the charming and lovely wife of our Illustrious Sir, Lady Doris Koehn. The young 2½ year old son of Noble Gary Endorf of Mitchell was a little confused by it all but knew the bike belonged to him because he wouldn’t let his older sister touch it. Members of the Shamerah Unit and the

Clown Unit deserve a vote of thanks for their participation in this outstanding activity that brought so much happiness to the youngsters. Mothers and fathers involved themselves with their children in the sack races and the ride on the Shamerah trailer pulled by Noble Lee Scott

75 Years Ago, August 1948

A ceremonial session of the Midwest Shrine Association was arranged by Zuhrah Temple on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Twin Cities Unit of the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children. The pilgrimage was most successful and enjoyable. A ten-car special train carried the El Riad contingent of almost two hundred, which included the Uniformed Units, the Divan, and others who were paying guests. The work was put on in the Minneapolis Municipal Auditorium, where 821 novices were created as Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Candidates came from Zuhrah, Osman, Zor, Yelduz and Aad temples. El Riad had the largest delegation of visiting dignitaries. The Second Section was preceded by a grand entry before an audience of 7,500 nobles. All of the marching units came onto the arena floor, temple by temple, until there was a solid mass of brilliant and dazzling colors so characteristic of the Shrine. Later, selected units from a few temples performed separately and our Oriental Band had the spot for El Riad. They did a grand job and brought thunderous applause from the vast throng of spectators. The finale of the celebration was a parade about three miles long that marched along Nicollet Avenue between lines of thousands and thousands of men, women and children who were agog at the fanfare and panoply of the Shrine as exemplified by the bands, chanters, patrols and other groups plus pranksters (our own clown unit did well). El Riad units were second in position in the parade.

ur Shrine brotherhood is all about fellowship. The more we collectively participate in that fellowship, the greater we all get. We say this maybe too often, but the phrase “a rising tide floats all boats” completely describes being an El Riad Noble. When you have your boat in the El Riad tide, you rise as others rise, making your life more rewarding while supporting the greatest philanthropy in the world. There is not a better fraternal organization on this planet than Shriner’s where the more you contribute (time/talent) the more fulfilling your life becomes for you and those around you.

One of the best examples we have of the power of the El Riad fraternity is volunteering at the Shriner’s Open in Las Vegas. For over 10 years, Charles Brown (PP) and his Lady Paula have organized a contingent of El Riad Nobles to marshal holes 7, 8, and 9 at the tourney, which is contested from Oct. 12-15. That is unprecedented and certainly gets the attention of National Shrine leadership. Here’s a photo of last year’s group. By the time you get this Cactus, informational meetings will be scheduled to learn more about the rewards of participating this event. This is a fellowship opportunity everyone should consider.

by Bruce Norton

LODGE DEGREE SCHEDULE

Also by the time you read this Cactus, we’ll be just a few short months away from our spring ceremonial. Your membership committee is asking you work diligently those last few months to sponsor a candidate for Masonic and Shrine membership. Don’t hesitate to reach out to any membership committee member for assistance. Additionally, the membership section of the El Riad website has terrific content on what it means to become a Mason and Shriner.

Finally, there are 35 groups and clubs affiliated with the El Riad Shrine. A list can be found in this Cactus. If you are not involved with any of these groups and clubs, we highly encourage you to check them out and connect with a group or groups that match your interests. If you are already part of a group, work to get more involved. You can be assured you will get way more out of this fellowship than you give while enjoying your boat rising, and rising, and rising in the El Riad tide.

EL RIAD FIFE & DRUM

My goodness, what a busy last couple of months for the men of the Fife and Drum! Our annual Memorial Day appearance at the SD Veterans Cematary was nicely attended and we even got a group picture with Governor Kristi Noem! This is such an important event for us to participate in and each of us are grateful for being able to honor our hero’s.

We then moved on to June and our annual appearance at the Buffalo Days parade in Luverne. This is followed by our family pizza feast at the Pizza Inn hosted by our officers. Gosh what great family time this is! The next two weekends were staffing two bar tending gigs at the Shrine. Seems like many of the same guys keep showing up for these and we sure appreciate that they do. We then moved on to the Pote’s Parade where 13 of our finest turned out to to march. As you can see from the pictures we looked and sounded great at all three of our appearances in uniform. Also sending a shout out to legendary Fifer Kim Sigler. Kim has been experiencing a number of medical

issues, including his cancer fight, but continues to exhibit his unique style regardless of his circumstances. Happy to have this image of him returning home after a 12 day hospital stay for a collapsed lung.

During all this time, we have also been planning and preparing for an appearance at Mt. Rushmore July 20. We have 17 guys signed up to participate. This will be our third appearance in the last 20 years and certainly is a goose bump moment when we much up the Avenue of Flags. Very anxious to report on this trip in the next Cactus.

Finally, John Archer’s father Will, passed away in late June. He was 98 1/2 years old and certainly, one of the finest servants our good Lord has ever put on this earth. I imagine one of his first things in heaven will be organizing a kid’s basketball tournament!

GIVE $100 AND FEEL LIKE A MILLION! Join the Shrine’s $100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB

The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” — Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family.

Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund.

Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care.

Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Chief of Staff: Assistant Chief of Staff Dave Murphy reminded the nobility that units and clubs need to get their parade forms turned in for approval by the Potentate prior to attending the parade. The Yankton circus is on June 2223, and the Winner Circus is on June 24. The Potentate’s Parade is in Dell Rapid on June 24 with an Oasis to follow at the city park. Membership: Committee member Marshal Tony Bachman announced that 7 new nobles were created at a recent cold sands ceremony. He thanked all who contributed in any way to the growth of the temple on that day. The Watertown Unit is doing well with recruitment. He asked all to keep thinking membership.

Shrine Cup: Assistant Rabban Mark Richard told the nobility that he is working with the Shrine Cup Committee to build a new committee and a new committee structure, similar to how the Sportsman’s Classic committee is structured. The committee is also busy obtaining sponsorships and planning for the event in August.

Masonic Relations: Noble Jim Hoy advised the nobility of the suspension of the charter of Unity Lodge 130 on April 26, the details of the suspension, and how the matter was resolved between Grand Master Dan Nace and the officers of Unity Lodge 130, which resulted in the restoration of the charter. Noble Hoy reported on upcoming activities of the lodges, to include the following: Grand Lodge annual communication at Watertown, June 16-17; Minnehaha Lodge 5 special meeting with EA degree, June 22; Unity Lodge 130, stated meeting, June 22; and joint installation of officers of area lodges, Sioux Falls Masonic Center, June 28.
