This is something that I dreamed about for years,” said beaming Boston Police Captain Alfredo Andres following a promotional ceremony held last Friday held at the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in the South End of Boston. “I can’t put it into words. It’s like Christmas and New Year’s all rolled into one,” added the proud Cuban-American who is the first Latino to attain the rank of “Captain” in the 188 year history of the Boston Police Department, the oldest in the nation. The event also honored the achievements of 25 Boston police officers who received promotions. Davis. “If you think being a cop is dangerous,” joked Davis, “Al is now handling the union negotiations.” Born in El Oriente, Cuba, Andres immigrated with his family first to Miami, and later moved to Boston, where he grew up in Jamaica Plain. three years in the army, he began his career in law enforcement, working for nine years in Area B-2, and subsequently rose through the ranks of the BPD. “This proves that, as Latinos, there are no obstacles that we can’t overcome,” he advised. “Nothing comes easy. in palabras quedó el oficial de Policía Carlos Lara durante la celebración de la Herencia Hispana organizada por la Asociación Multicultural Unidos, (A.M.U.), al recibir un reconocimiento por sus quince años de labor comunitaria por parte de comerciantes de la Asociación de Hyde Jackson Square el pasado jueves 11 de octubre. El oficial de policía Carlos Lara, quien se desempeña en su labor diaria en Jamaica Plain, Área E-13, ha sido un
eslabón comunitario con los comerciantes, jóvenes, personas de la tercera edad y agencias comunitarias. El amor a su trabajo lo ha hecho ser un baluarte de dicho reconocimiento. El homenaje se realizó luego de un taller sobre los Derechos de Víctimas de Crímenes con la oficina del fiscal de Distrito Daniel F. Conley y su personal Tanya Brussa, en donde miembros de la comunidad expresaron y reconocieron la labor de Lara.
