The Political Influence of Hispanics and the Spanish-Language Media that Serves Them

W

gration, regardless whether it’s number one on any poll, it’s number one in the minds and hearts of all Hispanics. Even when it doesn't show that it's their number one concern, it's the most important, and the most symbolic, that unites all Latinos.” Univisión, which is available in 95% of all Hispanic households in the United States and whose nightly news telecast is watched by over 2 million viewers daily, was one of two Spanish-language television networks (the other was Telemundo) that “went live” to the Senate floor last December to broadcast the vote that killed prospects for the DREAM Act at the end of the last Congress. La Opinión wrote that the Republican leadership of the subcommittee has used the hearings to scapegoat immigrants for the country's economic woes, without offering a real solution either to the economic crisis or the broken immigration system. In fact, 62% of the coverage of the first hearing on immigration raids and worksite enforcement was reported by the Spanish-language press. So if Republicans are looking to appeal to Latinos on the way to the next presidential election in 2012, they're doing a good job of making that task even harder by driving them even further from the party. Nevertheless, Rehbinder warned during the panel that both parties should stay on their toes. “Because of the anti immigrant rhetoric coming from Republicans, Latinos are now stuck in the middle because Republicans want to get rid of them and Democrats use them during the elections and then discard them.” Whether considering their impact on the Census and Congressional allocation or their interest in immigration, whether we're talking about citizens, legal residents, or undocumented immigrants, the influence of the Hispanic population is palpable and quantifiable – something that neither political party should ignore as we plunge into a new electoral cycle coming up on the 2012 presidential elections.

Ocurrielcias

ashington - New Census data on the growth of the Hispanic population continues to underscore the importance of this group in our national fabric-and to the electoral map. In California, the Hispanic population grew by 28% over the course of the decade, now representing 38% of the state's residents. While it can be argued that not all of this population growth translates directly into political power, there are important political factors to note here as well. For example, Census data confirms that California kept its 53 seats in the House of Representatives thanks to the growth of the Latino population, and consider too, that the Hispanic population (and its growth) in these states will play a role in the Congressional redistricting process that will take place as a result of the new Census data. As usual, Spanish-language media led the efforts to urge Hispanics to participate in the Census, informing them of what was in play as a result of the decennial count. These media outlets also continue to play a central role in keeping Hispanics informed about ongoing developments on the issues that affect them – immigration, for example. Recently, America's Voice and the Center for American Progress (CAP) held a panel entitled “Spanish-Language Media and the Issues that Move Latino Voters” on the importance of the Spanish-language media in informing Spanish-speakers in the United States. The panelists, María Elena Salinas, Co-Anchor for Noticiero Univisión (Univisión’s nightly news broadcast); Teresa E. Frontado, Online Editor for El Nuevo Herald; Henrik Rehbinder, Editorial Editor for La Opinión; and Samuel Orozco, Executive Producer and Host of “Línea Abierta” on Radio Bilingüe, agreed that both the English-language media and politicians shouldn’t ignore the fact that immigration is one of the most important issues to this community. María Elena Salinas asserted that “immi-

t is in the people’s interest to realize that several wrongful practices exist today. One is that multinational corporations can move work to global sites where the labor costs are the cheapest. Another is that business can now provide as much money as it wants to any election process anywhere at any time. A third item is that funding provided to elected officials must reveal its source to the public. Full transparency of all these activities must be a requirement sooner rather than later. Until the influence of special interests is curbed, the checks and balances built into our established governance, under our U.S. Constitution, do not work at all. The undue interest of lobbyists and other representatives of special interests must be curbed. There are no options to reaching a balanced budget at any government agency. What can be accomplished must occur at the national level. If the dollar is to continue as the monetary instrument of the global economy, America must begin by settling its debts and making decisions that distribute the wealth of our nation in a manner that is in the interest of the many rather than the few. Any and all attempts today to begin dealing with reasonable debt management, coupled with program funding, runs into the opposition of those whose entitlements may be involved. It is ridiculous to learn that the Congress was against the cutback of a weapons systems not needed by the U.S. military forces. A contract for a plane which is delivered to the U.S. Air Force along with an extra engine was not modified to eliminate the production of that extra engine. Why? Well, that engine is manufactured in the district that elected the Speaker of the House. Is this evidence of the power and influence of the military-industrial complex that former President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned us about some 50 years ago? All entitlements and subsidies must be made public, whatever their form and purpose. One proposal which needs to be considered is quite direct. How do the people go about requiring elected officials, especially the senators and representatives of the U.S. Congress, to recuse themselves after accepting major funds from special interests? It is an accepted practice that if one has a conflict

of interest, one does not get to vote on that particular matter. In my opinion, any elected official, who has accepted significant contributions from any special interest source, has created ‘a conflict of interest’. That contribution has diverted that elected official from exercising unencumbered judgment to act on behalf of the majority of us. That elected official now acts on behalf of the few, not the many. The most influential agent is now that special interest who has made one or more contributions. These contributions may be made covertly so that the public never knows where that money came from. Our decision making system is being bought off by those who have access to large sums of money. Representative democracy is thwarted as a consequence towards the interest of the few. It seems that the ideal of democracy, which is ‘one person; one vote’ , cannot exist when the ultra-wealthy and special interests can buy off the vote of an elected official regardless of its geographical location. When billionaires in Kansas can supply money to a candidate in South Carolina to fund costly advertisement and promotions, it is possible to overwhelm the financial capability of the local residents. This sort of thing did not happen when our founding fathers assembled our constitution. It need not be permitted now. Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations could donate as much money as they wanted to any election process. Corporations are not ‘citizens’ with an ability to register to vote and cast a ballot. While individuals can continue to contribute to local election campaigns, it is time to redefine a ‘corporation’ as a business entity licensed by our government to conduct business by manufacture of goods and services and cannot be involved with, nor interfere with, any election process anywhere in this nation. And it must now have two purposes: One is to make a profit and the second is to provide employment to the workers residing in the community. The enemy within our democracy is the corporation which makes no effort to provide gainful employment to its labor force both here and abroad. Once the many stakeholders understand what is going on, the people will act. It is, after all, in the people’s interest.∆

Japan Earthquake Could Be One Of The Costliest In World History

I

Debido a esas fallas no ten-

nsurers and reinsurers worldwide have the financial strength to pay the claims that will emerge after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami in Japan, but these events, coupled with the severe quakes that recently struck New Zealand and Chile, have placed extraordinary demands on the industry, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.). “The insurance industry will fulfill its traditional role as an economic first-responder, helping Japan recover from today’s devastating quake, just as it has done in New Zealand and Chile,” said Dr. Robert Hartwig, an economist and president of the I.I.I. “What makes today’s natural disaster so extraordinary is that four of the five costliest earthquakes and tsunamis in the past 30 years have occurred within the past 13 months, once you include what happened on March 11 in Japan.” Prior to today’s earthquake, insured earthquake losses worldwide dating back to February 2010 totaled an estimated $23 billon. “The Japanese nonlife insurance industry is very large— third only to the United States and Germany—with $107 billion in premiums written in 2009,” said Dr. Hartwig. “The implication is, that a larger share of losses are likely to be retained by domestic Japanese insurers and reinsurers than was the case with recent earthquakes in Chile and New Zealand.” Dr. Hartwig also noted that some Japanese seismic risk has been securitized through the catastrophe bond market, though it is too soon to tell if payouts under any of those bonds will be triggered. The earthquake that struck Northridge, California, in January 1994 remains at the top of the list, (which goes back to 1980) having caused $15.3 billion in insured losses at the time, or $22.5 billion in 2010 dollars. The February 2011 quake in New Zealand (up to $10 billion in insured losses), the February 2010 earthquake and tsunami in Chile ($8 billion), and the September 2010 quake in New Zealand ($5 billion), rank second, third, and fourth, respectively, on the list of costliest earthquakes, according to loss estimates compiled by Munich Re and released earlier today. The fifth-costliest earthquake worldwide since 1980 also occurred in Japan, in January 1995, causing $3 billion in insured losses at the time ($4.3 billion in 2010 dollars).

his remarkable woman today presides once each month as the Chair, Community Child Care Center of Santa Clara County, aka as the “4C’s”, a community based nonprofit organization. She is very excited and committed to the continued development of 4C’s, which will soon begin providing needed services at the North Side Community Center. She interacts with Fred Villasenor, Executive Director, in their collaboration to develop policies and resources to expand services needed by both children and older adults. The 4C’s currently has a budget which needs to be augmented to support their outreach and expanded services. That is today’s challenge which excites and motivates Sofia. Sofia is well known and highly respected by many as an effective community organizer. She was born in Fillmore, CA December 22, 1934. Her parents are Margaret and Tiburcio Magdaleno. Her father was a laborer who was a union organizer when corporate leaders highly resisted union formation and its collective bargaining rights. Her late husband, Gilbert, died about 3 years ago. Sofia is not concerned that

three of her four children are now visiting Cuba to attend the annual international music festival held there. She looks forward to attending the annual extended Mendoza family gathering held every year during the summer. The following is a concise summary of Mendoza’s community actions. a) Campbell High School: Tiburcio, her father, helped her organize students, teachers, and parents which resulted in the first “Spanish Club” at that school. b) The use of paddles by teachers at Roosevelt Junior High School ended when the Mexican-American community opposed the use of physical abuse. c) The use of “Mentally Retarded, but teachable” categorization was exposed and ended soon thereafter. d) Organized school walkouts were used to change school district policy in both San Jose and Los Angeles. e) Served as an appointed member of Hispanic Advisory Board, California Office of the State Superintendent of Education (Bill Honig and Delaine Easton). f) Met and conferred with leading community organizers including Cesar E. Chavez, Cipriano Montoya, Jose Villa, Juaquin Vila, Esq., Antonio De Buono, Jorge Azevedo, Fred

Hirsch, and others. g) Participated in changing the former system of ‘at large’ election of San Jose council members to the current 10 city districts, each electing one council member. This change enabled the election of ethnic candidates beginning with Blanca Alvarado. h) Addressed the misuse of force by police officers which resulted in the formation of the San Jose Office of the Independent Police Auditor. g) Exposed the San Jose Redevelopment Agency’s relocation programs which did not conform to regulations published in the Federal Register. h) Advocated for affordable housing programs such as Tierra Nuestra. i) Advocated for and influenced the formation of the East Valley Medical Clinic by SCVMC. And today, one year after suffering acute kidney failure (diabetes), Sofia goes to the Satellite Dialysis Center three times a week and devotes her skills and experience to being the Chair, Board of Directors, Community Child Care Center, County of Santa Clara. All these years of effective community engagement and organizing, which began in the 1950’s some 60 years ago, define Sofia’s role as an outstanding leader and role model. EO presents a full

Organizing litter pickups and cleaning graffiti along with the walking,” said Councilmember Sam Liccardo. “They are a very impressive group.” Liccardo presented the group with their commendation for empowering parents to unite and making the Guadalupe-Washington neighborhood feel secure. After a series of violent incidents, the con-

cerned group decided to focus on creating safer routes to and from school. The active parents wear bright green vests, carry flashlights, and a whistle during their rounds. “The vest gives me security and at the same time I receive the admiration of other parents,” said Carolina Salas, parent of a student at Washington Elementary. “I am very happy and safe.” With the support of Principal Mary Evans and counselor Marylou Hernandez, the program was launched to help the children feel safe and for a positive presence of adults before and after school.

Smart Parents! By Rosario Vital El Observador

S

chool Smarts Parents Academy is a seven-session pilot program created by the California State PTA. The program was launched earlier this year, in the northern Bay Area, and allowed parents to go once a week to take classes and become involved in their child's activities. The pilot program has had a major impact. The plan worked better than expected and has been a resounding success: waiting lists, crowded classrooms and 100% parent participation and commitment during the sessions. The pilot was created to provide educational training to parents so they can understand how the schools operate. During the educational sessions the parents received educational tools to see how they can help their children to progress in school and how can they become good advocates. "I had the opportunity to work directly with parents. They learned a lot, they had fun and they got confidence when they learned more about their kid's school." said Connie Calderon, instructor of this pilot program at Martin Elementary School in South San Francisco. "The parents also learned how important art is. The artwork was part of the class and it has

impressed more than one parent. They shared activities with their children," Calderon said. "Honestly, I learned many wonderful things with this program. I’ll definitely recommend this program to other parents. I hope we can get similar classes next year, "said Rosalva Lopez, a mother of three children. The continuation of the pilot program is still under study. Teachers and parents are trying to find funds to continue the program. "The participation of parents was so great that we had a waiting list. For example, a designated room for 25 persons had to accommodate 36 parents. Fathers also participated, not just mothers, "said Juanita Flores, Community Co-ordinator for schools in South San Francisco. Information and tools shared during the classes are valuable from kindergarten through high school, and actually have given attendees guidance in how to prepare their children for college. A total of 141 parents have graduated from the Bay area and 242 in Southern California, for a total of 383 parents. The goal is for all these parents ,who are now advocates, to participate in their children’s schools. The overall goal of the program is to extend all these classes throughout the State of California.

Sleeping Beauty -- Skin Tips for Youthful Skin at Night (NewsUSA) n the morning, you might cleanse, tone and moisturize. But your nighttime skin care routine requires more than just a quick swipe with a washcloth. In fact, your skin needs additional TLC before bedtime.

I

During the day, environmental factors are battling against our skin and breaking down the structural components which keep our skin tight and firm. Elastin, which is one of these components, is primarily composed of crosslinked fibers to form a durable, resilient web. In facial skin, this elastin web helps to keep skin flexible but tight, providing a bounce-back reaction to its normal shape as it stretches to accommodate normal activities like talking. As skin ages, the natural cross-linking of elastin fibers is reduced. At night, while you sleep, the skin works to repair and restore its structural components, and actually "opens up" to allow creams and serums to absorb more readily. You can get the most “bang for your buck,” then by applying products with powerful anti-aging ingredients before bed. "It's important to establish a nighttime skincare regimen to restore skin's defenses and replenish essential moisture," explains nutritionist Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD. She adds that the skin can lose moisture during sleep, making hydrating ingredients especially impor-

tant. To help skin restore itself at night, women should adopt a nighttime skin care routine that includes an exfoliating cleanser, a serum and a moisturizing cream created for evening use. SASS recommends applying a nighttime serum containing beneficial and robust ingredients such as DDF Restoring Night Serum (www.ddfskincare.com). This nighttime serum contains an exclusive turmeric complex that strengthens the moisture barrier and drenches the skin with essential hydration to allow the natural cross linking of elastin, helping to repair the look of deep wrinkles for visible results in just two weeks. Women who used DDF Restoring Night Serum saw noticeable improvements. After four weeks of use, the skin's surface structure doubled in strength, significantly minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. "The secret to radiant, firm and more youthful-looking skin is a skincare diet rich in robust ingredients," says Sass. For more information, visit www.ddfskincare.com

Preserving funding for Children’s Health Initiative By Cinthia Rodriguez El Observador

P

eople Acting in Community Together (PACT) faith leaders, parents and Anderson Elementary children delivered a powerful message to the city council and mayor to continue supporting the Children’s Health Initiative. The Children’s Health Initiative was established to provide health insurance to the estimated 71,000 uninsured children in Santa Clara County. It includes three health insurance programs: Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and Healthy Kids. “We are going to continue to fund this,” said Mayor Chuck Reed during a press conference held by PACT. Although the city manager had proposed eliminating the program, Reed’s recent Budget Message proposes keeping funding stable. The program that was launched on January 2, 2001, originated at the grassroots level through the vision and efforts of Working Partnerships USA and PACT. These two organizations approached the Santa Clara

County Board of Supervisors with an innovative proposal to use tobacco settlement funds in creating a new health insurance product for children, which became the Healthy Kids program. Once approved, the goal was established to make comprehensive health insurance accessible to 100% of the children living in Santa Clara County with family income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level. “There’s nothing more important than healthy vibrant kids and all the things that come with taking care of them,” said Councilmember Nancy Pyle. While Medi-Cal and Healthy Families are insurance programs funded by the federal and state governments, Healthy Kids is not. Healthy Kids must raise money on its own and includes receiving funds from the City of San Jose. To apply for free and low cost health insurance call 1-888-244-5222. Ten Ways to Eat More Vegetables

M

ILWAUKEE, WI – Whether you’re trying to lose weight or just maintain a healthy lifestyle, it’s important to include a variety of vegetables in meal planning. The health benefits of eating vegetables are many and include reducing the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and certain cancers, such as mouth, stomach, and colon cancer. It can be a challenge to include a sufficient amount of this tasty and beneficial food group to menus. These tips from TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization, offer some creative ways to eat more vegetables:

1. Make a “pasta” dish with spaghetti squash instead of noodles. 2. Puree cooked vegetables and add them to stews, gravies, and soups. 3. Add raw spinach leaves and an extra-ripe banana to a fruit smoothie. It may sound strange, but the sweetness of the banana masks the taste of the spinach. 4. Baking? Add shredded carrots to muffins or bread. 5. Instead of cheese and meat, pile your morning omelet with onions, mushrooms, and red and green peppers. Chop vegetables the night before to save time in the morning.

Allergy Relief: Nothing to Sniff At (NewsUSA) o you have difficulty controlling your allergy symptoms even though you're on medications? Or do you still get allergy-like symptoms even when the allergy season is over? If so, you may be one of over 40 million people who suffer from a condition called nonallergic rhinitis. Easily confused with seasonal allergies, nonallergic rhinitis causes similar symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, sinus pressure and pain. But unlike allergies, it's not caused by allergens such as pollen and ragweed. Instead, it's often caused by environmental factors such as perfumes, household cleaners, cigarette smoke or changes in weather. Even if you've been diagnosed with seasonal allergies, there's a good chance you also have a non-allergic component to your suffering. A recent study confirmed that 50 to 70 percent of allergy sufferers also have nonallergic rhinitis. If you think that you might have nonallergic causes for your symptoms, ask your doctor. Unfortunately, allergy pills like Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra do little to relieve nonallergic rhinitis. Instead, your doctor may recommend a prescription nasal steroid or a new

D

over-the-counter nasal spray called Sinus Buster, which has been clinically proven to provide significant relief for sufferers who have both allergic and nonallergic causes for their symptoms. Sinus Buster contains capsaicin - one of the most studied botanical medicines -- and has been shown to directly shut down the receptors in the nose that cause congestion, sinus pressure and pain. Sinus Buster has demonstrated a very fast onset of action, with patients experiencing relief in under one minute. Most importantly, all-natural Sinus Buster has an excellent safety profile with no rebound congestion, a habitforming condition associated with chemicalbased sprays such as Afrin. The Sinus Buster study was fielded by allergy specialist Dr. Jonathan Bernstein, professor of medicine in the Division of Immunology/Allergy at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine. He has published several papers on the importance of proper diagnosis of nonallergic rhinitis and has successfully treated many of his own patients with Sinus Buster. To learn more about nonallergic rhinitis or the Sinus Buster clinical, visit www.BusterBrands.com.

6. Add chopped spinach to meat when preparing meatballs or hamburgers. 7. Try mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. Experiment with different flavorings such as garlic, a dab of butter, and Parmesan cheese. 8. Add salsa to a breakfast burrito, pile it on a veggie burger, or use it in place of high-fat, creamy vegetable dips. 9. Puree pasta sauce with vegetables such as winter squash or chopped broccoli. 10. Add chopped carrots to casseroles or meat loaf. TOPS Club Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), the

original, nonprofit weight-loss support and wellness education organization, was established more than 63 years ago to champion weight-loss support and success. Founded and headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, TOPS promotes successful, affordable weight management with a philosophy that combines healthy eating, regular exercise, wellness information, and support from others at weekly chapter meetings. TOPS has about 170,000 members in nearly 10,000 chapters throughout the United States and Canada.
