Leaf Litter by Pippa Greenwood

Are you starting to notice the increase in fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, tree-loving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

L

eaves that are allowed to build up can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - the sooner the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive. If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves then the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you can pick by hand, or you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). After collecting the leaves, make leaf mould. It is easy and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own

6

(they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…and then leave them be. Chop up larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) first so they rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. Avoid very spiky leaves, and those that are very leathery and tough mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. You can speed the process up by adding a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres. You can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely

To advertise call 0131 337 3309

fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. Whichever method you use you should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but leave it a bit longer and it will be even better! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for gorgeous gardening things including the unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - you choose the vegetables you’d like to grow and Pippa sends garden-ready plants as well as weekly advice and tips emails to you. Plus Nemaslug, signed books, jute composting bags and lots more besides.

Business Spotlight Edinburgh Micro Diggers

M

y name is Stewart Erskine and I started up Edinburgh Micro Diggers in 2005. My dad had his own plant hire company so it was quite natural for me to follow in his footsteps. I have operated most types of plant including all sizes of excavators, loading shovels, dozers, dump trucks, fork lifts and mobile, crawler, barges, as well as the huge cranes on ships, in the UK and in Norway, Denmark, Holland and China.

These days, I specialise in small machinery that can access the majority of back gardens in Edinburgh. Infact, my micro digger with the tracks contracted is only 740mm wide, which in theory should pass through a front door and on several occasions actually has! Recent jobs have included digging out tree

roots, hedging and levelling a garden section, similar to the work shown in the advertisement below, which involved making the entire garden one level, building a retaining wall and turfing it all. Many customers call me to dig the foundations for an extension they are building. I’m amazed to hear in this day and age how many builders still hand dig foundations and use wheelbarrows to skip the soil. That is such a labour intensive, time consuming and costly alternative to micro digging, which in most cases has the job finished in one day. I’ve invested in the best machinery to do the work in the most effective and quickest way possible, costing you less with the best results. If you need any work done, large or small or have any questions about a job needing done, please give me a call for a chat and a free quote.

Cake and Bake Halloween Macaroons For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons?

Ingredients: • 230g icing sugar, sifted • 75g ground almonds • 2 large egg whites • 50g caster sugar • Orange and black food colouring gel • 55g unsalted butter, softened • tsp vanilla extract

Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling

TIP

The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

10

1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery. Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside. 2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange. 3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted. 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3. 5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons. 7. To make the filling, beat the butter, remaining icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place all the undecorated macaroon shells flat-side up on a board. Pipe a small mound of the buttercream onto each shell then gently sandwich together with a decorated shell, pressing down gently.

The City of Music Cremona

By Solange Hando

South of Milan in the lush Po Valley, Cremona is a special place where tradition lingers in every cobbled lane and shaded square. perfect wood and made around 1,100 violins and other string instruments. There is no record of his birth in Cremona but the town claims him as its own. After all, he did come from a local family and his instruments were labelled ‘Cremona’.

R

enaissance and medieval buildings glow red and gold in the morning light, the belfry claims the world’s largest astronomical clock but above it all, the heart of Cremona beats to the sound of music as it has done for centuries. First there is the cathedral, a centre of musical excellence since the Middle Ages when Pope Gregory XIV, formerly the city’s bishop, spread its reputation far and wide. Today, an organ recital in the Duomo still sends shivers down your spine as superb acoustics enhance its amazing range, from gentle fanciful flurries to thunderous outbreaks. Then come the city’s illustrious sons, Claudio Monteverdi, born in 1567, composer, singer, musician and priest, and Amilcare Ponchielli who wrote his first symphony at the age of ten before falling in love with the opera. Born near Cremona in the 19th century, he gave his name to his native village and the town theatre, one of the first in northern Italy. But for many music lovers, Cremona is synonymous with Antonio Stradivari, the 17th - 18th century violin maker who lifted the craft to unrivalled heights. He would walk through the forests of the Dolomites, they say, to find the

12

Around 500 original violins have survived, including the ‘Lady Blunt’ auctioned in 2011 for over £9 million, donated anonymously for earthquake relief in Japan. Meanwhile, Cremona cherishes its own beautifully preserved collections in the Civic Museum and in the Violin Museum, where occasionally a priceless ‘Stradivarius’ comes out of its glass case to be played by a worldrenowned virtuoso in the adjoining auditorium. For the audience, it’s a privileged moment that will stay with them long after the final notes. Stradivari died in 1737, aged 93, but Cremona’s love affair with violin making is ongoing, with 157 ‘luthiers’ in town producing modern instruments, ‘different but just as good in their own way.’ Stefano Conia is one of them, inviting visitors to share his life’s passion in a tiny workshop filled with tools and violins hanging all around in warm coppery hues. ‘It’s a family tradition,’ says the father of two, ‘ and the violins are like my children.’ How long does it take from start to finish? About two months, but the wood needs to mature for ten years so you have to work on several instruments at the same time, all at different stages. Attention to detail, soul and feel are the hallmark of every piece signed by Stefano, each one unique and a ‘mirror’ of himself. Back in town, visitors wander around the piazzas where monuments and statues recall Cremona’s musical past. Others head for the ‘historical shop’ offering among the finest specialities its own violins made of almonds or chocolate. Later, when towers and palaces turn fiery red in the setting sun, you can almost hear the haunting sound of violins reaching out to the darkest corners and floating down river towards Mantua and Venice, in the wake of a festive musical cruise.

Straight Outta Compton

M

usical biopics, especially those concerning living artists, are always tricky. In order to feature the music that made them famous (and, really, that’s what the audience wants to hear) you have to get the artist on board. In return, they usually want to supress as many of the negative aspects of their rags to riches story as possible and come out the other side smelling like roses. Director F Gary Gray is a long-time collaborator of Ice Cube and Dr Dre, who also serve as executive producers on Straight Outta Compton, so it isn’t a surprise that the final result is slightly pandering, particularly in a dull and lacklustre second half.

That’s not to say the film isn’t worth seing, even if you’re not a fan of the music. It kicks off at a ferocious pace, and sustains that energy and excitement throughout the fantastic opening hour. We very quickly see the five members of the group (Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, Easy-E and DOC) come together through a love of making music, with the main goal of making enough money to escape the dead end day jobs and overarching violence in the ghetto of Compton, Los Angeles. After a self-released record gets some radio airtime, Easy-E (Jason Mitchell) is approached by record producer Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti) and soon the band are recording an album and touring the USA. It’s in this first half, mostly set in Compton, that the film thrives and delivers two major scenes containing images that still resonate today, particularly in post-Ferguson 2015 (the entire film is set against the backdrop of the Rodney King riots in LA). The first is one in a series of instances of the group being harassed 14

By David Tibbs

by thuggish police officers for doing nothing other than being outside. Giamatti’s Heller is enraged by this, declaring to the police that these men are artists not gangbangers, and manages to use his white privilege to lessen the punishment. This incident would serve as the inspiration behind their protest song ‘F**k tha Police.’ After playing this song in Detroit in 1989, N.W.A were arrested for inciting a riot, and pressure was applied never to perform that song again in public. It’s a tense and thrilling sequence that almost makes up for what the film becomes. The film is soon preoccupied with rather dull contract negotiations, which eventually leads to Ice Cube leaving the group believing Jerry Heller to be duping the group out of millions of dollars. We are then treated to a succession of scenes featuring famous rappers, including Snoop Dogg and Tupac, only there so fans can spot them but with no impact on the narrative. At two and a half hours, the film is too long and too much of that time is wasted when it could have been spent developing even a single female character (there just aren’t any) or explaining Easy-E’s eventual death to the AIDS virus, which the film inexplicably glosses over. Even DOC and Yella, both of whom are still alive, are relegated to sidekick characters in their own movie. It’s no surprise that Dr Dre and Ice Cube came out looking the cleanest, smartest and richest (they manage to squeeze in a mention of that billion dollar Apple deal despite it happening 20 years on from the end of the film) of the bunch. It’s essentially their story. It’s just a shame they focused on some of the least interesting aspects of it.

DCM CONSTRUCTION ‘I recently employed the services of DCM construction to tile my kitchen. I was really impressed by the professional nature of the team, both the overseer Dylan Mason and his tiler Keith. They fitted in providing a quote and performing the work to meet my busy working schedule and completed the work efficiently and within my desired time frame. I would definitely use this company again and recommend to friends and colleagues. The tiles look fantastic and I am really pleased with the finished product. Thankyou’ Resident (name withheld upon request)

G STEWART JOINERY ‘A few months ago, I was in need of a Joiner to cut worktops for my kitchen. From my first initial phone call with Gavin to him turning up, I was very impressed with his professionalism and work ethics. He did a fantastic job, cleared up and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.’ Resident (name withheld upon request)

JM BUILDERS ‘We have just had another job done for us by James and his friendly, hard working and effective workers. We re-

quested a visit to check and advise on the state of the roof. James came round and not only gave sound practical advice but offered to start the necessary repairs in two days time. Sure enough two lads turned up and set to work. When slipshod old work was revealed then the evidence was pointed out and new material obtained. The entire job including a comprehensive inspection and tidying up afterwards was completed in only two days. The overall cost was very good value and we would certainly use J M Builders again. SWANSTON TECHNICAL SERVICES ‘I wish to recommend Swanston Technical Services to your readers as I had a problem with the electricity supply in my house and Steve from STS arrived within an extremely short space of time and sorted out the problem within minutes, refusing to take any payment for doing so- rather unexpectedly, as he must have incurred some costs in travelling, at least. It is not the first time that this firm has been so prompt and efficient in carrying out repairs and installation works and should be congratulated on their attitude to customer service. Ross

PILATES... Feeling Leaner, Toned, Relaxed

H

ello, I’m Diane Sidey. I have worked in the fitness industry since 1995 and i have been enjoying teaching Pilates exercise classes in Edinburgh since 2002. On 4th September I will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of operating my own successful fitness businesses. I am a qualified Pilates Level 3 instructor and I teach around 630 hours of Pilates per year at various venues. All

my classes are fun & friendly where you are sure to meet new friends and enjoy the fabulous results that Pilates provides. I have members of all shapes & sizes, all fitness levels and both male & female, ages ranging from 20 to 80 years old! At each class I teach a structured one hour session where each person works at their own individual pace and level and I provide mats and exercise equipment. In the winter months I use candles and “mood lighting” which helps relax my members. Many people join after being recommended to do Pilates by their physiotherapists.

Monday 9.45-10.45am Wednesday 6.55-7.55pm, 8-9pm Friday 8.50-9.50am

Pilates is not just a series of exercises, it is a way of life. It will not only change the way you look, but how you think and feel, increasing your understanding of your body, the most precious gift we have. Pilates is a body conditioning method that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. Targeting the deep postural muscles, Pilates works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment.

St Peter’s RC Primary School

I believe that classes should always be fun with a bit of hard work thrown in!

South Edinburgh

W

hat is a Men's Shed, you may wonder? A men’s shed is a

place where men come together, working together making, fixing, and talking. It is a place to feel at home and to pursue practical interests. Members share the tools, resources and knowledge they need to work on projects of their choosing, at their own pace, in a friendly venue. A Men’s Shed is a place of skill sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits, community projects and social interaction. It’s also a place of leisure where men can meet up, and enjoy the company of others. A Men’s Shed also promotes good health, which is based on many factors

including feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting with pals and staying active, in body and mind. Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed gives you a safe and busy environment where you can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned friendship. And, importantly, there’s no pressure. You can just come and have a natter and a cuppa if that is all you want

Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life - the bond that unites us is that we are men with time on our hands and we’d like something meaningful to do with that time. Why not come along to the first meeting of South Edinburgh Men's Shed on Thursday 1st October at 10.30, and every Thursday thereafter at Gracemount Mansion House next to Gracemount Primary School. You can enjoy a cup of tea and share some ideas. Contact Tam if you’re interested on 07515391830 or e-mail mensshededinburghsouth@yahoo. co.uk

Recognising Diversity The Youth Talk Awards

T

we are here to support people that have come out and to discuss problems in the school and try to do something about it.’

The group is made up of people who identify as lesbian, gay, transgender or queer (LGBTQ), and those who don’t identify as LGBTQ but who support diversity. We hold a weekly lunchtime meeting to discuss a range of topics and issues, and aim to implement action within the school community that promotes diversity.

‘I think it is important to have groups like this because everyone should be treated the same and this group supports that.’

he LGBTQ Diversity group at Gracemount High School is a small team of pupils and staff who are passionate about equal rights and celebrating diversity.

Pupils regularly express that Gracemount High School is a very inclusive school, and take great pride in this fact. Pupils strongly feel that a LGBTQ group is essential in schools for a wide range of reasons; recognising and valuing the LGBTQ community, raise awareness of LGBTQ issues, actively promote diversity, and provide a safe space for discussion without judgement.

‘It is good for a LGBT group in schools to raise awareness of LGBTQ issues and so the LGBTQ community feel represented and valued.’

The group was set up in January 2014, and very quickly committed to celebrating LGBT History Month by delivering House assemblies, hosting a Purple Friday event, and organising the order of Stonewall slogan t-shirts for staff and pupils. We have plans this year to build upon the successes from last year, and hope to link with other schools and external organisations. Already this year, we have had current and former students visit to deliver talks to our group. This year, we also celebrated with and were recognised by the Youth Talk Awards.

‘I think every school should have a group like this because LGBTQ people need to know they are supported. That’s why we’re here. We want everyone to be accepted. The group shows young people that young people in Gracemount High School support LGBTQ.’

The first Liberton/Gilmerton Youth Talk Awards 2015 took place on Thursday 4th June 2015. The awards were created and organised by young people who felt there was a need to recognise the outstanding community work of local young people. The ‘Diversity Champion’ Youth Talk Award recognises those who take action to drive forward equality and who make the Liberton/Gilmerton community diverse and inclusive. Our LGBTQ Diversity group felt honoured to win this category, particularly because the nominees in every category was exceptionally high. The group were astounded to hear the range of stories behind every nomination, and the selfless work that young people in our local community do. The Awards night was an excellent evening, and we all left enthused and inspired to do more.

‘It’s important to have this group as it shows that we are supportive, here to comfort and here to talk about LGBTQ. It also shows that

Vision On The best tech for watching TV

I

t’s hard to imagine now, but a twelve-inch TV with four channels was pretty hot stuff not so long ago. Today, of course, we have TVs as big as some houses’ walls, and more things to watch on them than ever before. But what tech actually makes your viewing better?

There are two kinds of technology to think about here. There’s the technology in the screen and the speakers, and there’s the technology that you can connect to a TV to add more options. Despite the hype it seems that 3D TV is dead: the technology never took off, probably because nobody wanted to wear daft glasses all the time. Manufacturers still want to sell us stuff though, so their latest wheeze is 4K TV, also known as Ultra HD. 4K TVs can display four times more pixels than HD TVs; the result should be a dramatically improved picture. That’s the theory, but what the manufacturers don’t tell you is that in a typical home, you won’t get the benefit: on screens smaller than about 55 inches, unless you sit with your nose on the screen you’ll be hard pushed to see any difference. There’s also precious little 4K content available just now: none of the UK broadcasters offer 4K programming. Manufacturers are also experimenting with shapes, with some firms now offering curved TVs. The intention is to deliver a more involving experience - like IMAX does compared to normal cinemas - but curved screens need you to sit right in the middle to get the full effect, which means they aren’t ideal for family viewing unless you’ll all sit in each other’s laps. The best TVs around just now are LED HD 26

TVs. The LED bit refers to the way they’re lit: by using ultra-low power LED lights, LED TVs use much less energy than other flat screens. If you’re in the market for a new TV, don’t forget about sound. Modern TVs’ ultra-slim cases don’t have enough room for good speakers, so most flat-screen TVs sound awfully tinny: many of them sound like you’re watching TV on a laptop. It’s worth investing in a soundbar - a long speaker bar that’s designed to sit under the TV and add oomph - or an audiovisual amplifier and speakers if you like your programmes loud. You’ll find that many TVs today are “smart TVs”, which means they can connect to the internet and access services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video (at a cost: both are subscription services) plus YouTube and catch-up services such as BBC iPlayer. If you’d like to have the same services on an existing TV there are several inexpensive ways to do it, provided your TV has a spare HDMI socket (most relatively recent ones should) and you have a Wi-Fi network to connect to. Google’s £30 Chromecast and Amazon’s £35 Fire TV Stick both deliver catch-up TV and Netflix over the internet (Amazon’s box also offers Amazon video), while Sky’s Now TV (£20) doesn’t have Netflix but does deliver catch-up services such as iPlayer. And if you’re an Apple fan, the £57 Apple TV adds Netflix, YouTube, Apple Music and iTunes videos and video rentals - although be careful if you’re considering buying one, as we’re expecting a brand new version to be released any day now.

Tax Q&As Flat Rate Scheme Calculating the amount

Q

due

I am completing my VAT return and I use the Flat Rate Scheme. Can you tell me how I calculate the VAT due to HMRC please?

A

Firstly, you should remind yourself what industry you opted for when you applied for the Flat Rate Scheme. The industry type dictates what rate you should apply. You can look up the rates on HMRC’s website here https://www.gov.uk/ vat-flat-rate-scheme/vat-flat-rates. In your first year as a VAT-registered business the rate is reduced by 1% until the day before your registration anniversary. You then apply this rate to your gross turnover - i.e. the amount you have invoiced your customers including the VAT. This means all of the following:

If you use the Flat Rate Scheme, you cannot normally recover any of the input VAT you incur on your expenses. The only exception to that is if you make a single purchase of capital expenditure where the value including VAT is £2,000 or more. If you would like any assistance in managing your VAT affairs, your local TaxAssist Accountant would be happy to help. Contact us if you would like to be put in touch with your local office. Disclaimer – advice shared in this column is intended to inform rather than advise and is based on legislation and practice at the time. Taxpayer’s circumstances do vary and if you feel that the information provided is beneficial it is important that you contact us before implementation. If you take, or do not take action as a result of reading this column, before receiving our written endorsement, we will accept no responsibility for any financial loss incurred.

• The VAT inclusive sales and takings for standard rate, zero rate and reduced rate supplies • The value of exempt income, such as any rent or lottery commission • Supplies of capital expenditure goods where you have reclaimed input tax on them. When they are sold out of the business, you must account for output tax at the appropriate VAT rate for the sale (not at the flat rate) • The value of any despatches to other Member States of the EC if you are making intra EC supplies As exempt and zero rate supplies are included in your turnover under the Flat Rate Scheme, you may pay more VAT by being on the scheme if these supplies are a large proportion of your turnover. 28

as JK Rowling, Ernest Hemmingway and John Grisham.

Rejections The first time you get a rejection from an agent or publisher, it’s akin to being told your dog is ugly, or that your favourite child is an underachiever. Of course, the devil’s in the detail. Remember, it’s only your work that’s being rejected. You didn’t seriously think you’d contact one person and receive a contract by return post? That can happen, and so can winning the lottery. If you’ve had the big thumbs-down for a manuscript you’re in the esteemed company of world-renowned authors such

When you’re the victim of a literary crime you need to turn detective (and it took Agatha Christie five years to do that in print, by the way). Does the letter give you any clues? The worst rejections are those that offer little beyond ‘no thanks’. If you’ve received some feedback, put the letter aside for a few days so you can come to it with a clear head. Now, what is it telling you? If the problem lies with the prose, the spelling, the grammar, or where you sent the submission (you did check they were currently open to your genre, right?), the situation can be remedied for the next time. However, if the problem is more fundamental and concerns your plot, your lead characters or the overall concept, you may have to make some difficult choices. Are you willing to dedicate more time and possibly some of your money to seeing that book published? By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

Growing the Natural Product Market for over 50 years We’ve been Supernature’s exclusive online retailer since we first discovered their amazing range of cold-pressed rapeseed oils at one of Edinburgh Farmer’s Markets shortly after they started out. Supernature rapeseed oil is produced at Carrington Barns Farm, near Edinburgh, where their family have farmed for 160 years. Supernature’s multi award-winning range of oils are produced using a spring variety of rapeseed crop, which has a shorter growing season with longer daylight hours, resulting in a higher quality oil. Their focus on responsible and sustainable farming means nothing is added or taken away during production, the result being a very pure, natural oil. Even the by-product of their cold pressing process is used as a high quality animal feed. • Natural – We champion the best in local natural products • Healthy – We care about brands who care about the health of the nation and the natural environment • Growth – We think the best kind of growth is natural, which can be hard work, but the rewards benefit everyone. If you shop at Real Foods you can be sure that you are helping to grow a market that has a future for us all.
