Message from the City of Johannesburg The City of Johannesburg is delighted to play a part at the Architecture ZA 2015 conference taking place in the heart of Johannesburg, with the theme, “Future City, as the architectural and the built environment fraternities are critical partners in developing the future of Johannesburg. We look forward to engaging discussions, debates and innovative exhibits as we collectively work towards an inclusive, sustainable, resilient, economically active and creative city. As the City of Johannesburg we are utilizing the conference to share key policy imperatives which are helping to shape the future of our city. The architectural community both long standing and emerging play an integral role in implementing. The established and long-standing architectural community of Johannesburg has an excellent track-record of working with the City on iconic and impactful projects which has already altered the nature of our City. The conference, presents a unique opportunity to engage with emerging architects and entrench deeper partnerships towards shaping a future Johannesburg. This collaboration seeks to illicit ideas for a City which at its core connects its residents to opportunities and resources through a backbone of efficient, safe and effective public transportation infrastructure. The future of this great vibrant African city is people-centric, with design that is responsive to the needs of its residents. This entails a radical shift as the city moves away from vehicle centric highways, buildings and suburbs towards pedestrians, cyclists, active streets and inclusive urban neighbourhoods. We look forward to unique, creative and distinctly Johannesburg design responses to this changing city. The City of Johannesburg’s involvement in AZA 2015 signals a deepening of a partnership with the built environment fraternity towards the shared Future Johannesburg. Best regards, MMC Greeff

SAIA is the proud host of AZA2015 The South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) is proud to host the AZA2015, as it is our organisation’s intention to be involved, and help solve the challenges facing South African communities through the multitude of skills, knowledge and insightful perceptions of our members, supported through SAIA. During this event we look at modern cities and through meaningful conversations believe that tangible and lasting solutions can be found to address many of the difficulties faced today and, which if not tackled, will still haunt generations to come. Many challenges associated with our cities arose due to the complexities and inequalities of the past but which can be addressed profoundly through the inspirations and aspirations of South Africa’s finest architects. Thus , SAIA is proud to host an event capable of enriching members and trust you will return home after the conference full of enthusiasm and with new perspectives on how you can show your determination to changing the city scape for the better, today and as a legacy

Afirica’s biggest architecture festival

The second decade of the 21st century heralds a dramatic new era where, for the first time, the majority of the world’s population will live in cities. This landmark trend towards almost unstoppable urbanisation will establish a new power relationship between the state and the city, which will drive business and politics in the future. It will change the way in which humans live, interact and survive in a precarious yet challenging environment. Daniel Silke, Political Analyst
