EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In a mere 15 minute non-invasive, painless test, a Thermography scan can alert you to changes that may indicate early stage breast disease. Although Thermography cannot diagnose cancer, a scan might detect tumor development when it is the size of a pin head. That is 3 to 5 years before a mammogram can do so! Now, you can detect changes in your 20’s and beyond, with no radiation or compression.

(317) 663-7123 www.hwofc.com

When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.

LIFE "ON PURPOSE" LISA BERRY

By Matthew Hume | Photography By Eduardo Peña

stepped into Love Your Body Yoga and Loungewear Boutique shortly before closing time. From the moment I entered the store, I picked up on a certain frenetic and positively excited atmosphere. Two shopkeepers were chatting about merchandise placement, and a couple shoppers were browsing the boutique's varied offerings. Lisa greeted me within seconds with a warm, friendly, enthusiastic smile and a kind handshake that accepted me just as I was in that moment. (I would soon find out this was a guiding principle of the store.) While Lisa took a phone call, I took in my colorful surroundings. (“Hi, honey, hello? Two big boxes—can you drop them off with me on the way? Oh, well don't worry, we'll talk tonight...”) All around me were yoga pants and tops of all shapes, colors and styles; beautiful, vividly colored and flowing dresses; boots, jewelry, hats and other accessories; and of course some yoga mats. Lisa pointed out to me the store's recently added line of men's wear. And hanging above the front entrance were several black and white prints of Lisa and her family in the great outdoors—in various yoga positions. Love Your Body sums up its approach to style very succinctly: “From down dog to date night.” Lisa takes a moment to explain

16

ACTIVE

LI FE MAGAZINE | J ULY 2 0 1 6

this. “I'm trying to meet women where they're at,” she says. “and I'm trying to be a store for women as we actually are, as we actually live.” Lisa operates—and as an extension, the store operates—on the belief that you don't have to be uncomfortable to feel beautiful. “The idea is that you start with your yoga pants, and you build on from there. If you want to be beautiful, you never have to take off those yoga pants. You can put on heels with them and go out for dinner. That's what I do!”

A Long and Winding Road From the level of style and professionalism Lisa brings to Love Your Body, you might think she's been working in the world of yoga and fashion her whole life. As a matter of fact, nothing could be further from the truth. An artsy intellect with a background that runs the gamut from ice skating and professional ballroom dance, to working for major think tanks and serving as a staffer at the White House, Lisa is the first to admit her path to small business owner was anything but direct. After graduating from Butler University with a degree in political science and economics, Lisa went on to secure a master's degree in European social policy from the highly esteemed London School of Economics. “During my undergraduate

years, I spent some time as an intern at the Hudson Institute, when it was based in Indianapolis, doing work on welfare policy,” Lisa says. “They wouldn't hire me because they wanted someone with a higher degree, so as soon as I got my master's, the Hudson literally flew someone to London to ask me to open a London office for them.” Lisa agreed to their proposal, but after a couple of years, she moved back to the U.S. – and decided to go to cooking school. “I know, I'm crazy! I moved to Boulder and enrolled in the Cooking School of the Rockies,” she laughs. “That didn't last very long.” It was at that point that Lisa made the move to Washington, D.C., where she enrolled in another master's program at American University—this time in broadcast journalism. “The level they'd taught us in London was so high, and I felt like what I was learning in journalism school was to unlearn everything I'd learned about good writing, and I wasn't happy with that,” she says. With her background in social welfare reform and social policy, Lisa was hired by the Cato Institute as a welfare policy analyst. “Through a variety of channels, I met someone who'd just been hired by President George W. Bush to be in charge of presidential appointments, and he hired me right out of the Cato Institute to work on appointments to the Departments of Education and Health

and Human Services,” Lisa tells me. “I even got to brief the President in the Oval Office a few times.” Saving one of the best appointments for herself, Lisa served for a year as Executive Director of the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Even so, it took only a few years for Lisa to learn that politics was not the arena for her.

Follow the Heart When you grow up surrounded by professional parents—doctors, lawyers and so forth—and your parents' friends are other professional types, there often exists a societal pressure to follow a similar path. This is the environment that Lisa grew up in, and she excelled at creating a life story that matched certain expectations—going to college, getting a master's degree, and securing high-profile positions in Washington, D.C. It wasn't until she left Washington and took a new position at a think tank out in Arizona that Lisa finally started listening to her soul's own desires and stopped listening as much to the socalled “voices of reason” that exist in our swirling world. “Out in Arizona, I got back into ballroom dancing, met my husband— who was my dance teacher—went to massage school at night, got my yoga teacher certification, and just finally decided to put all that academic stuff behind me,” Lisa says. “I realized finally that wasn't my life calling at all, and that I'd been ignoring what I really love, which is health and wellness.” Once Lisa embraced her soul, and released the ego, the arrows she'd been searching for her whole life to point her in the right direction started popping up everywhere. “What I realized I loved about health and wellness is how you have to dress in that field, and so ultimately, fashion is my passion,” she says. “My favorite jobs I ever had were back in college, working in retail fashion stores.” Lisa's life has never been more “on purpose,” as she says. Of course, her only wish is that she'd found this 30 years ago! “Growing up in a family of professionals, the world of fashion was never something I was encouraged to do,” Lisa tells me. “As a Mom, then, I'm really encouraging my little children to follow their hearts—to find what they love and do it well.”

Like a Lightning Bolt There's a saying goes, that love comes at you when you least expect it. Much the same can be said for life direction—at least according to Lisa. “I'd spent years asking the universe to point me toward something more,” Lisa

18

ACTIVE

LI FE MAGAZINE | J ULY 2 0 1 6

says. “I love my family, I love being a Mom, but I knew there was more to who I was supposed to be.” Well, in early 2015, the universe revealed its plans for Lisa while she was stopped at a traffic light—in the form of an email. Lisa and her family had been back in Indianapolis for several years by this point, and over the course of those years, Lisa had taken a number of yoga classes around town. “I got this email from All People Yoga—I'd taken classes there six years ago—and they were looking for a part-time studio manager,” she recalls. “I had been dancing full-time—and not getting paid for it—and I wanted to do something part-time, possibly open a store, that played on yoga and also utilized my professional skills. I thought this part-time studio manager thing was perfect!” Within a few days, Lisa had interviewed with the studio owner, and the wheels were set into motion—not to work for the studio, as it turns out, but rather to open that store she'd been dreaming about. “The owner of All People Yoga called me after I interviewed and said she found someone better than me for that job, but that she still wanted to hire me—and so she created a job for me to be her marketing and retail manager,” Lisa says. But during their conversation, the studio owner mentioned offhandedly that the space right next door to the studio had opened up for lease. Bells went off inside Lisa's head. “I called the landlord to ask about the space, and that weekend I wrote a 20-page business plan for Love Your Body,” she says. “I went in on Monday and told the studio owner I could do more for her with a different idea. Once I told her my plan to open up next door to the studio and to become her sister business, to promote each other and share clients, she was all in. I was on the job at All People for one whole day!” Lisa laughs. “And my store was up and running in two months' time.”

Unlimited Creative Potential That was last summer. One year later, and the business is growing faster than Lisa ever could have believed. “My favorite thing to do on the job is to style people, and I just seem to have a talent for it,” she tells me. “I had so many requests to go into people's homes and help them style the closet they already have. I literally had to form a subsidiary business, Love Your Closet.” And remember that energetic buzz I felt when I first walked into the store? As it turns out, Lisa and her colleagues are in the midst of two spinoff business ventures. “It's insanity right now!” she squeals happily. “We're launching our e-commerce site, and I'm a very go-big-or-go-home kind of person. I've hired a creative director and an operations

director for the project.” At the same time, Lisa is expanding beyond her boutique's walls and planting Love Your Body ministores at studios around town, all part of her Love Your Body On the Go subsidiary. “I see us bringing our retail into spas, fitness businesses, and ultimately, ultimately I would love to have exclusivity with a hotel chain that is well-known as a destination spa.” (Go big or go home, like she said.) What I find most amazing about Lisa Berry is not her education or her work in well-known think tanks, or even the role she played in the White House for a time. What strikes me most is that Lisa Berry is a woman unafraid to follow her dreams—to strike out in the direction her head and heart lead. “There are two kinds of people in the world,” she says. “People who think there's something wrong with you because you can't make up your mind—and another group, a growing group, who think 'Wow! How amazing and empowering to have tried all these things!'” Lisa certainly doesn't discount any of her experiences, though. She knows that the choices she's made in life have helped form her into the successful businesswoman that she is now. “It's human nature to find cohesion—we don't live well with chaos,” she says. “For a long time, it felt very chaotic in my own heart and mind. What am I doing? Who am I? Why am I doing this? Well, all of a sudden, here's my story, and it all makes sense now.”

Lisa's Personal "Hot List" Favorite Wine: Catena Malbec (She suggests having Curtis at Fleming's to pour you a glass.) Favorite Family Pic: Disney World, with all three kids asleep, and Mommy and Daddy with a margarita in their hands Greatest Guilty Pleasure: Tortilla chips— followed closely by a weak spot for Dairy Queen Hero: Her six-year-old daughter (“She's confident, a free spirit, no insecurities—the woman I've been trying my whole life to become. And she's six.”) Guiding Philosophy: A belief in unlimited creative potential. (“You choose the frequency you're at, and your life literally follows from there.”) Challenge to Readers: “Try a one-day experiment of non-judgment. Stop judging yourself for just one day. What will you eat? What will you wear? What color would your hair be?”

AC TI V E L I FE GU I DE . CO M

“I want a better, more self-accepting life for every one who comes into our store,” Lisa says. “For me, a better life is a cleaner home, a smaller closet—it's a lifestyle that we're trying to promote—a clean, healthy, self-accepting lifestyle. Healthy inside, healthy outside.”

KICKOFF

to Summer Fun

T

he long days of summer are here! Sunshine, ice cream, snow cones, swimming, bicycling, baseball, picnics, concerts in the park and long walks—so much to celebrate and so much to do! It feels great to get outside, take in the fresh air and enjoy some outdoor activity again. On my bucket list of things to try this season: FootGolf. FootGolf is a combination of soccer and golf. The rules correspond with golf, but rather than using a golf club and ball, you kick a regulation #4 or #5 soccer ball, which you can rent if you don't have your own. The holes are shortened to at least 50 meters and consist of 21-inch diameter cups. The goal of the

24

ACTIVE

game is to sink your soccer ball into the large cup with the least number of kicks from the tee-off. As with golf, 9 or 18 holes can be played, with typically four people per group. There are four different tee boxes, so the entire family can play regardless of their level of fitness or ability. Another positive is that 9 holes can be played in less than an hour—before the kids lose interest and the parents lose steam. Unlike Frisbee golf, FootGolf is actually played on a golf course. Hamilton County has three golf courses that offer the game, one each in Westfield, Noblesville and Fishers. Listed below is the location, cost and contact information.

Tone It U p the Right Way this Summer!

There is a fear and stigma that goes along with lifting weights, typically visions of bulking up and growing in size. So many people use the term “tone up” to describe a body that is lean and void of fat. The belief is that to tone up, one should lift high reps and very low weight or simply perform cardio without any strength.

This couldn’t be further A pound of muscle actually occupies less space than a pound of fat, and in order to create muscle from the truth.

This helps recruit and strengthen Therefore, you must lift enough weight to fatigue the muscles by the end of your strength set, or focus on power training with explosive, high velocity movements (i.e., push press, jumps and medicine ball slams). In this article I them.

Glutathione:

A Power Tool in Autoimmune Management

O

ur bodies have to work hard to deal with hundreds of toxic chemicals in our daily environment, in our food, and in our water. Even if you eat a clean, organic diet and use non-toxic products, it’s impossible to completely avoid them. Thankfully, certain natural compounds can boost levels of our most powerful antioxidant, glutathione, in our bodies. Glutathione is a powerful defense against toxins and inflammation. It protects the body’s cells from damage, helps detoxify the body, and supports optimal immune function. When glutathione levels drop too low, this makes you more susceptible to autoimmune disease, multiple food sensitivities, chemical and heavy metal sensitivities, chronic inflammatory disorders, leaky gut and other immune-related issues. By ensuring your glutathione levels stay at robust levels, you provide your body with an army of soldiers ready to “take a bullet” and shield your cells from the destructive forces of toxins and inflammation.

Things that deplete glutathione In an ideal world, we have plenty of glutathione. Our bodies make sufficient amounts, and the glutathione system is not overly taxed. Sadly, the

modern world is far from ideal. Chronic stress, environmental toxins, diets low in nutrients but high in inflammatory triggers, sleep deprivation, smoking, sugar, excess alcohol and other stressors slowly deplete glutathione levels. Glutathione levels also decrease naturally as a result of aging. A straight glutathione supplement is not effective taken orally. Instead, people can take glutathione through a liposomal cream, nebulizer, suppository, IV drip or injections. S-acetyl-glutathione, reduced glutathione, and oral liposomal glutathione are forms that are absorbable orally. These methods will help raise glutathione levels and your general antioxidant status, which can reduce inflammation and improve health. Another method that raises glutathione uses precursors to boost levels and recycle glutathione within cells. Glutathione recycling helps

guard against autoimmunity

Recycling glutathione entails taking existing glutathione the body has already used in selfdefense, and rebuilding it so it can work for us again. Research shows a link between poor glutathione recycling and autoimmune disease. In other words, if you’re not recycling glutathione well, you’re at more risk of developing autoimmune

disease. Healthy glutathione recycling is a vital tool in managing autoimmune disease. Glutathione recycling helps repair leaky gut

Glutathione recycling also helps repair leaky gut and protect it from permeability. Leaky gut can lead to or exacerbate autoimmunity, multiple food sensitivities and chronic inflammation. When glutathione recycling is insufficient, a person is more prone to developing leaky gut and all the maladies that accompany it. Glutathione recycling is vital to good gut health. How to boost glutathione recycling

The most important first step in boosting glutathione recycling is to remove the stressors depleting glutathione levels to the best of your ability. Look at your life in regards to sleep deprivation, smoking, foods that cause inflammation, sugars

and processed foods, excess alcohol and other factors. In addition to addressing lifestyle factors, you can take a variety of nutritional and botanical compounds that have been shown to support glutathione recycling. They include: • N-acetyl-cysteine • Alpha-lipoic acid • L-glutamine • Selenium • Cordyceps • Gotu kola • Milk thistle Boosting your glutathione levels with an absorbable form and then supporting glutathione recycling can significantly help you manage autoimmune disease, inflammatory disorders, chemical sensitivities, food sensitivities, and more.

Summer Cooking on the

Big Green Egg

Summer is here and that means time for fresh foods and cooking outside. One of the best tools you can have in your outdoor kitchen is a Big Green Egg. These go beyond a grill and can be used for low smoking, roasting, and even baking! Here are a couple of our favorite things to make on the Big Green Egg. Texas-Style Brisket (Pictured above) Recipe courtesy of Matt Pittman of Meat Church. This brisket is wonderful alone or served with soft tortillas and taco toppings. Ingredients One 10 to 12 lb (4.5 to 5.5 kg) whole packer brisket (Choice or higher) Instructions Mix the rub ingredients (listed below) in a large bowl. Trim the excess fat and silver skin from the brisket. Also, remove any “hard” pieces of fat as they will not render off during the cooking process. Trim the fat off the bottom of the brisket leaving only ¼ in (6 mm) fat. Apply rub to all sides of the meat liberally … I mean liberally! Cover the brisket and place in the refrigerator to marinate overnight. Set the EGG for indirect cooking with the convEGGtor at 250°F/121°C. Place the brisket on the grid, fat-side down. When the meat reaches an internal temperature of 160°F/71°C, double wrap the brisket in non-waxed butcher paper or aluminum foil. Continue to smoke the brisket until the meat is “probe tender,” which means when you probe it there is no resistance … think of a toothpick in a cake. Each piece of meat is different but this will likely be at an internal temperature of between 200-202°F/93-94°C. Remove the brisket from the EGG, wrap in a towel and place in a cooler for at least one hour. This will allow the juices to re-distribute in the meat. Unwrap the brisket and slice against the grain.

Skillet Pizza Margarita with Alpine and Fresh Basil Recipe courtesy of Cabot Cheese and Lodge Cast Iron. Ingredients 1 10-ounce ball of pizza dough, risen at room temperature flour for dusting semolina or cornmeal for dusting 1/3 cup marinara sauce 3 ounces shredded Cabot Alpine cheddar 4 teaspoons chopped fresh basil Instructions Set EGG for direct grilling (no convEGGtor) at 500°F/260°C. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Gently spread dough out with fingertips and sides of your hands, keeping as much air in the outer/crust edge as possible. Stretch dough into a 10inch circle. (Alternatively, roll out with a rolling pin.) Sprinkle semolina lightly in the bottom of a 12-inch Lodge cast iron skillet. Lay pizza dough out in the prepared skillet. Spread marinara over the pizza dough, leaving a border for the crust. Sprinkle with Alpine cheddar. Place the skillet on the EGG and close dome. Let pizza cook until it is puffed, the bottom is crisp and browned, the crust is starting to brown and the cheese is melted. Remove the entire skillet from the EGG with EGGmitt. Slide pizza onto cutting board with a spatula. Sprinkle with basil. Cut and serve.

Brisket Rub Ingredients 1 cup (240 ml) coarsely ground pepper 1 cup (240 ml) non-iodized salt ¼ cup (60 ml) granulated garlic ¼ cup (60 ml) onion powder ¼ cup (60 ml) paprika

Living Room Planning Essentials space mainly to socialize with friends or to lounge while watching TV? • Do you want a more formal feel or a more casual feel?

O

ne of the most essential spaces in any home is the living room. It is where we relax, come together as a family, and socialize with friends. As such a critically used area, it is important to

think through how to set up the space. There are several factors to decide upon before selecting furniture: • How many people do you want to seat? • Will you use the

Determining how many you want to seat on a daily basis is important to figuring out how many seats you will require. If you plan to use the space mainly for social gatherings, then selecting more individual chairs and two-cushion sofas that are not overly deep are better for comfort when people are sitting up and facing each other. If you are using the space for family time and TV watching, then larger, deeper sofas and sectionals are the way to go. Fitted and tufted pieces will create a more formal look than loose backed or slipcovered collections. Whatever style and size pieces that are selected, make sure to create a grouping that feels cozy and intimate. Don’t be afraid to pull pieces away from walls to float in the space. This will scale large rooms down to a more livable area and tie the grouping together. Face the grouping toward

your focal point in the space, whether that is a fireplace, a window view or the TV. Use rugs to define the space, and place the front feet of the furniture overlapping onto the rug. Then, fill in the space with an

appropriately sized coffee table allowing the majority of the seats in the grouping to reach it. Add end tables for additional useable surfaces around the edges of your room. L a s t l y , accessorize with functional items such as lighting, pillows and throws. These items complete the look and add your own personal style while still adding to the functionality of the room. Make sure to size the lighting in scale with the rest of your furniture. Your pillows and throws can add color and texture that will pull the entire space together. If you plan your room right, you will create a cozy and comfortable place to relax and enjoy with the whole family. Then, just sit back and start enjoying what you have created!

Five Family Fishing Vacations Mammoth Lakes, California Snow-capped mountains bound the ultra-clear lakes that are the namesake of Mammoth Lakes in California’s Eastern Sierra. Dozens of lakes scatter this region, and virtually all receive heavy stockings of trout (including some huge trout). Various resorts cater to family travel with cabins, campsites and boat rentals, and trout fishing is the main attraction. Black Hills, South Dakota From Custer State Park to the Wild West town of Deadwood, the Black Hills offer a host of fun stuff for families to enjoy. The lakes, most of which you can fish effectively from the bank or a small boat, offer 40

everything from yellow perch to large lake trout. Don’t spend every available minute chasing fish, though. Mount Rushmore truly is a must-see spot for the entire family. Niagara River, New York The Niagara River is best associated for its spectacular waterfall, which you do need to visit while you’re in the area. For fishermen, this short river that connects Lakes Erie and Ontario also stands out as one of the world’s most prolific fisheries. During the summer, walleyes, muskies and smallmouth bass take center stage on the Niagara, with the smallies serving up sizzling action.

Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee Formed 200 years ago when earthquakes caused the Mississippi River to jump its channel and flood swampy bottomlands, Reelfoot Lake looks like a giant farm pond. More significantly, Reelfoot fishes like a farm pond, with jumbo bluegills, thickbodied largemouth and always-abundant crappie and catfish all readily available and usually easy to locate. White River, Arkansas The legendary line of pink cabins at Gaston’s fronts the Ozarks’ most famous tailwater, where fisheries folks stock more than 1 million catchable-sized trout every year. Simple bait rigs provide fast action

from feisty rainbows to anglers of all ages. Meanwhile, heavyweight brown trout lurks in deep holes, offering a “big game” bonus.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. -A.K. Best Most of the world is covered by water.
