GET A FACELIFT WITHOUT HAVING SURGERY! Voluma, Vollure, Ultra/Ultra Plus, Restylane Refyne and Defyne. Filler treatment sessions usually last 30-60 minutes. A strong numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before the treatment to greatly decrease any discomfort to the targeted areas. Results can be seen immediately, although some swelling and bruising may be present for a short period. Makeup and normal activities may be resumed the next day. Today’s wide array of filler types offer greater ability to safely and subtly enhance specific areas, especially when injected by trained professionals like those at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery.

W

e all lose volume and elasticity in our skin as we get older, especially in our faces. These changes can lead to sagging jowls, wrinkles, and hollowing. While having a surgical facelift is the best way to significantly reduce these telltale signs of aging, one may not be quite ready for this type of procedure. Rest assured, there are other options that are less invasive and require little to no downtime to recover. These include a liquid facelift and laser resurfacing. A liquid facelift is a quick, simple treatment conveniently performed at the office. Fillers are injected in

specific areas of the face to help lift and camouflage sagging jowls and facial wrinkles. These fillers are

made from hyaluronic acid, which is one of skin’s natural building blocks. The effects of these fillers last up to two years and are reversible. The most common filler brand names are Juvederm,

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | J A N UA RY 2 0 1 8

Laser resurfacing requires more downtime, but still avoids the need for sutures, incisions and surgery. Results from this proven technology, with a 25-year track record, can be more dramatic and long-lasting. Laser resurfacing removes the top layers of skin to reveal tighter, younger appearing new skin. Patients do have to commit to a week or two of downtime as well as sun avoidance both before and after the procedure. Because of this, these procedures are more often done in the winter time. While a full facelift remains the best way to tighten loose skin and restore a more youthful appearance, non-surgical alternatives such as injectable fillers and lasers can be excellent options for uplifting results.

he cold and meteorologically disagreeable wintertime is not exactly everyone’s favorite, but there’s something about dressing all warm and comfy that makes the season much more appealing. Hot chocolate, huge cups of warm tea, colder temperatures, and fluffy snowflakes all add to the magic of the winter. However, as far as your wardrobe is concerned, it’s all about staying both fashionable and warm in the midst of January.

Overcoming

By Valerie Jones, CPC

The Barriers to Reaching Your New Year’s Resolutions Choice • Did you choose the goal that you set, or did you choose the goal based on what you think you “should” do? Remember, we get to choose. Be true to yourself. Action • Action is the core of success. Have you acted upon the goals you set?

Ready to make 2018 count? To be intentional, that is…and not just going through life, but living it with purpose? In the last issue of ALM, we covered how to get selective with what we spend our time and energy on, and how empowering it is to realize that we get to choose! Now that we are two weeks into the New Year, how’s it going? Are you making progress on your New Year’s resolutions, or is there a lot of frustration? The fact is, many resolutions are broken—and good intentions fall off quickly. Research shows just a small percentage of those who establish New Year’s resolutions are successful in accomplishing them. There are many factors impacting our ability to be successful, and there are ways you can combat any obstacles you encounter.

18

“A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided.” Tony Robbins Moving Forward, Step by Step • Health and wellness top the charts on New Year’s resolutions. Losing weight, improving fitness level, running a marathon, getting more sleep, reducing sugar intake… These are significant goals! Setting goals inspires us and gives us a future view of ourselves. But sometimes we get overwhelmed, focusing on the outcome, and not taking into account that we need a plan with steps to reach our goal. You might want to try developing SMART Goals:

SPECIFIC MEASURABLE ACHIEVABLE RELEVANT TIME-BOUND • Breaking down “Measurable” into several short-term or small measurements, combined with “Time-Bound,” creating milestones toward the overall

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | J A N UA RY 2 0 1 8

goal, can help you make a realistic plan that will keep you engaged. • And to build momentum, celebrate the milestones, no matter how small. Reward yourself! Detour - Bumps along the Way • What happens when we get off course? We have the tendency to give up. Here’s some good advice for health and wellness goals that you can apply to your individual goals. “A healthy life isn’t an all or nothing approach. Leave that mindset at the door. Having a cookie doesn’t mean we’ve completely blown it and we might as well have 3 or 4 more. Enjoy the cookie without guilt, and move on! A healthy life is about balance, not perfection! For me, that includes a little chocolate now and then.” Lauren Paladin, Conditioning Specialist & Facility Manager, Hoffacker Health and Fitness. • There are going to be challenges along the way. Give yourself time to reflect on what you are learning about yourself in your successes and bumps along your journey! We have a greater chance of success with an accountability partner. Let’s create forward movement together. Ready for a coach?

Kelly Masterson, in her Bar Method online bio, refers to herself as a former “runner wanna-be.” Before bellying up to the barre in area studios, and falling so deeply in love with barre exercise that she eventually opened Indiana’s first Bar Method location, Kelly gave her all to running. “I never loved to run,” she says, “but my husband is a big runner, and we both thought it was a great way to be active together.” When your husband runs 7-minute miles and you’re just starting out, however, what sounds good in theory turns out not be so practical. “I had a huge group of friends to run with, and that made it fun,” she says. “Over time, we worked up from 3 miles, to 5, to 10-mile runs.” Eventually, having ramped themselves up to marathon distance, things got a little crazy (in my humble opinion). “We would get up at 2:30 in the morning to run 26 miles, and we’d be home before our kids went to school or our husbands got up,” Kelly explains. Dedicated yes. But passionate? Read between the lines when Kelly says she never did feel that “runner’s high.” And in addition to her general lack of enthusiasm for running, the sustained impact began to wear on her, leading Kelly to suffer injuries in both full marathons she ran. Not surprisingly, she smilingly admits, “The day I gave up running was the happiest day ever.” A CTIV E LIF E MAGAZINE .COM

Kelly endured a long and winding road to discovering a workout that worked for her. She tells me that boot camp style workouts, interval training, running, and other popular forms of exercise just never seemed to hit home for her. And then she discovered the barre. “I loved it from the very first class I took,” Kelly says. “It’s the first exercise routine I found where you work every muscle in the course of an hour-long class, and you feel the difference afterwards. Running, I had to run 10 miles to get that.” A one-hour session at Bar Method, Kelly says, hits every part of the body with isometric strength training, stretching, and high-rep, small rangeof-motion movements. (These include “all those lovely areas women want to tone,” Kelly adds.)

ALL ABOUT THE BARRE

OK, great, but what is barre fitness, and how does Bar Method fit into the mix? In short, the barre routines found today in Bar Method and other barre studios originated from a method created in the middle of the 20th century by German dancer Lottie Berk. Ms. Berk’s method drew from ballet, yoga and Pilates as a low-impact way to strengthen spine and core. Over time, that method grew to meet a variety of fitness needs, from strength and endurance, to sculpting, weight loss and overall flexibility. When Burr Leonard, founder of Bar Method and former student of Lottie Berk, began teaching, Kelly explains that some of her clients complained about discomfort in some of the positions. “This led Burr to enlist physical therapists for consultation,” Kelly says, and she tells me that all Bar Method studios still use a team of physical therapists to ensure the safety of their routines. When you hear “barre fitness,” especially if you have a dance background, your mind likely travels to the ballet barre. But while a barre is used in the routines, and though many of the positions are ballet inspired, the sessions are not about dance at all. “I didn’t grow up dancing,” Kelly tells me, and she assures readers that no background in dance is necessary. “That’s the beauty of this—it’s accessible to all ages and levels of fitness.” And genders, for that matter. Bar Method is open to all. True, barre routines don’t approach the overall intensity of a CrossFit class, and they don’t use heavy weights in their exercises, but Kelly says that a class at Bar Method is great for cross-training. “My husband runs marathons,” she says, “and he finds it to be a great cross-training tool for him. We do a lot of stretching, and when you run, you need that stretching that Bar Method provides. Those small movements are intense—you’re strengthening a different way than your normal interval training or other exercises.”

Kelly recalls how she first got started with the Bar Method IndianapolisCarmel, Indiana’s first Bar Method location. “I’d only been taking barre classes for a year or so, but I absolutely loved it. I was at lunch with a friend who told me I should check out the Bar Method. Well, we didn’t have an Indiana studio at that time, and the entrepreneurial side of me said, ‘I need to do this!’ So I ordered some of their DVDs and told my husband I wanted to open a studio. He thought I was crazy! It’s true, I can be impulsive, and so he thought I’d let go of this given some time. But this time I meant it, and after three months of not letting go, he gave in.”

MICROMOVEMENTS, TRANSFORMATIVE POWER

For Kelly, and for her loyal clients, Bar Method is so much more than a workout. In fact, Kelly sees the work she does as a means of empowering the women who visit her studio. “It’s so inspiring for me to see my clients transform,” she says. “We have women who come in and say, ‘I haven’t worked out for 7 years,’ and it’s so gratifying to see how they change from the outside in—they become confident and strong, inside and out.” Kelly understands for herself, too, the changes that come from dedication to the barre. “I’m tighter, leaner, and strong!” she says. And she stands up taller, too. Studies have shown that a more erect posture can lead to higher levels of confidence, and Kelly sees this as another ingredient in the empowerment that Bar Method brings. “When you go to a class that really focuses on strength and posture, you start to stand up taller wherever you go. My posture is so much better. Bar Method has made me—and so many others— feel strong.”

seat to wife and mother. She and her husband, Tim, a physician with IU Health, were high school sweethearts. Together, they have three children—two girls and a boy—not to mention the canine loves of their life, labradoodles Piper and Presley. “I was a stay-athome mom for 11 years,” she says. “So that’s one major benefit of the studio for me—I get to do what I love and still be home with my

Kelly says. “It was me waiting to see what opportunity would arise. I don’t really see myself as having done anything tremendous—it’s just who I am and what I do.” Kelly holds herself responsible for giving 110% and more during each hour she teaches—in her words, “to kill it for them.” “They’re taking that one hour for themselves, and I’m grateful to them for that, because as women, we don’t do that

enough.” Almost four years in, and with a steady and strong clientele, a reciprocity most certainly exists between owner and client in the grateful respect Kelly has for those who walk into the Bar Method’s doors.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BARRE

Kelly typically teaches 5 classes a week, but even when she’s not teaching, Bar Method guests will likely find her at the desk or running to-and-fro around the studio. “I really like working the desk, or sitting on the couch talking to clients, because it gives me a chance to connect to everyone,” she says. Yet another benefit of the studio—community building. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many women I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” Kelly says, from other strong moms, to businesswomen, to the 60-year-old who never misses a week. But when I ask Kelly what defines her, businesswoman takes a back

A CTIV E LIF E MAGAZINE .COM

Of all her accomplishments so far, Kelly is most proud, personally, of the children she’s raising. “My kids seem to be on track to be good citizens and productive people,” she says, although she adds, smiling, “they’re young, yet.” But she counts bringing the Bar Method to central Indiana as her greatest professional work. “People will say, ‘good for you,’ for opening the business, but for me, it wasn’t an option,”

BEST DESTINATION For Winter Sun

Isn’t it about time you planned your winter getaway?

THE MALDIVES Best time to go: December - April There is nothing bad about going to the Maldives at any time ever. They are perfect little islands, whichever you choose—tiny, castaway-fantasy sandy islets, mostly with one immaculate resort, with various levels of splendidness. Even people who think they will get bored in the Maldives end up loving these paradise islands. They're family-friendly, and for blissed-out beachy nirvana, they're hard to beat.

THAI ISLANDS Best time to go: November - March The islands of Thailand are the stuff of castaway fantasies. White sand, rustic-chic beach shacks, a hammock gently swaying between two palm trees as a turquoise sea laps at the shore… There are dozens to choose from, and each offers something quite different, from the super-spas of Koh Samui and the barefoot beach-bum in Koh Lipe, to Koh Lanta, which remains quietly chilled out with lovely places to stay on beaches that stretch for miles.

Over on the less-done Pacific Coast, meanwhile, more adventurous explorers and surfers are carving out a funky beach scene in the one-time sleepy fishing town of Sayulita, on the edge of the rainforest. ancient and buzzy-right-now cultures.

THE PHILIPPINES Best time to go: February - May More than 7,000 islands. Deserted whitesand beaches lined with tilting coconut trees.

Protected marine parks with pristine reefs Surf breaks so phenomenal they draw the world's best pros. Low-key but slick hotels and villas. And some of the friendliest people on the planet. This is the glory of the Philippines. like giant tropical fish bowls.

BALI Best time to go: Year-round It is rainiest (and thus cheapest) November - April; but even when it rains, it's in short, tropical bursts. Bali is the heavenly island with earthly pleasures. Back-toblissed-out spa retreats so fine that Bali has developed a style all of its own: clean and contemporary, dark wood and linen whites. Parties, from flip-flop full-moon raves in hidden-away coves to the cool Potato Head Beach Club and new The Lawn at the boho beach spot that everyone's talking about, Canggu. There's glamping here now, and chic boutiques. There's art in Ubud. There are spas absolutely everywhere. There are beaches, of course. And the pools here are something else: a classy, jungly deep green, shrouded by tropical leafery. Those incredible horizon pools high up and overlooking rainforest? That's classic Bali.
