The Best Prevention Strategies The first step in preventing signs of aging is to make sure the factors within our control, like diet, exercise and hydration, are optimized. Next, regular skin care at home, including use of a daily sunscreen, is critical. We have researched, developed and perfected a customized, medical-grade skin care line rich in vitamins and antioxidants that help maintain healthy skin. We prescribe our skin care line in conjunction with our customized and medically supervised facial and aesthetics services that significantly improve our patients’ skin. Laser Options Improve Aging Skin Many new in-office options exist that are effective, safe, and have little or no downtime. Treatment options combine laser technology, radio frequency and ultrasound to regenerate collagen, improve skin tone, fade sunspots and improve the overall quality of skin. Fractionated delivery systems ensure minimal downtime.

Roll back the years—with minimal downtime.

What Causes Skin Aging Many factors cause skin to age. Excess exposure to sun or other harmful rays is one of the most common factors that break down skin cells and cause premature aging. Hormones,

the muscles used in facial expressions can leave us with unwanted lines such as crow’sfeet or smile lines.

specifically changes in estrogen levels, cause wrinkles, melasma and unwanted fat deposits around our eyes and under our chin. Some medications can impact skin health, causing premature aging. Even

• Fractionated CO2 Therapy is one of the most effective in-office laser treatments available. The laser penetrates the outer layer of the skin and seals off the treated area, boosting collagen production. The treatment is excellent for improving skin tone, reducing acne scars, active acne, fine lines, age spots, sun damage and pore size. • Photo Rejuvenation Intense Pulsed Light uses broadspectrum light to rejuvenate skin. IPL is an excellent, nonablative treatment for overall skin improvement, working especially well for sun damage, spots, acne, redness and fine lines. IPL works best when done in a series of treatments.

LIFE magazine |J ULY 2 0 1 5

• Radio Frequency & Ultrasound Therapy uses high frequency electrical energy and sound waves to tighten and tone skin. The non-ablative treatment is excellent for fine lines, collagen building, scar therapy and acne control. The treatment stimulates the deep tissue for optimal skin tightening and collagen building. Injectable Therapy Injectables are not to be feared. They are safe, proven and effective treatments for wrinkles, folds and volume loss. Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are used to soften vertical and horizontal forehead lines as well as crow’s-feet around the eyes. Fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and Voluma, are a wonderful option to plump lips, smooth folds and fine lines, and add volume in areas of fatty loss. Now, there is a new FDA-approved injectable treatment we are offering called Kybella. This non-surgical treatment improves our chin contours and helps remove unwanted fat. Advanced Combination Therapy At some point, gravitational changes define when surgery is the only way to accomplish rejuvenation goals. When the skin and muscles on your face or body are sagging beyond what can be corrected with a laser or other type of therapy, I will use the most state-of-theart surgical options to restore youth to skin and muscles. Surgical treatments are often followed up with advanced laser treatments to further refine skin and enhance the quality and skin tone. The combinations, timing and treatments are unique and customized for each individual to provide optimal and natural results. Summertime is the perfect time to get your groove back.

VAmpire Breast Treatments

By Arthur J. Sumrall, M.A, M. D.

The weather is finally starting to break, and you know what that means. Skirts, sandals, dresses and, yes, shirts that show a little more cleavage—even bikini tops. Of course, some women simply don’t feel confident with shirts that show cleavage or in wearing bikini tops.

A

re you happy with the size of your breast, but would like a nice lift or the return of the cleavage you once had, or cleavage you have always wanted? Now there is an inoffice procedure that can do those very things. Say hello to

12

the Vampire Breast Lift. The purpose of the Vampire Breast Lift is the same as a well-made bra, that is, to lift and add cleavage. This procedure can also return lost sensation to the areola (nipple) area that may have decreased or been lost by other breast surgeries or breast

feeding. The Vampire Breast Lift is a way to improve the shape of the breasts without invasive surgery. The Vampire Breast Lift is a non-invasive procedure with no downtime, none of the risk associated with surgery and no side effects, and it can be done in our office in an hour or less. Our combination of products is what sets this technique apart from its more traditional breast lift and injectable filler counterpart. The entire procedure takes less than 60 minutes and starts with blood being drawn from the patient. The blood is taken the same way it would be for a normal blood test. Once blood has been collected, it is then centrifuged and the platelets are separated from the red blood cells. The platelets are then introduced into a calcium chloride solution, which causes the platelets to release growth factors. Small amounts of synthetic injectable

LIFE magazine |J ULY 2 0 1 5

filler (Juvederm) may be added to the mixture as well if needed. Once all the ingredients have been combined, a small-gauge needle is used to inject the product into specific areas of the breast, which has been numbed with a topical numbing cream. The procedure is very tolerable with minimal discomfort and no downtime. The breast immediately looks fuller, thereby creating the additional cleavage. This will continue to improve over the next three months, as the growth factors stimulate increased tissue growth. The procedure brings sensation back into the breast, areola and nipples. If you are happy with the size of your breast and want a nice lift and added cleavage, then this may be the procedure you’re looking for. Whether lounging by the pool or relaxing by the lake, look and feel your best this summer! pool. It’s almost a sure thing the bag will get wet, and that way your goodies will be safe! The main thing we absolutely can’t forget when planning a day by the water are the sunscreens and lip balms. My favorite thing in the world for summer are the Illuminating Tinted Moisturizers by Laura Mercier. They have a glowy finish to them and an SPF 20. I usually re-apply every 2 to 3 hours, or if I’m not swimming, I just apply in the morning and wear my hat all day. I love eos lip balms, too. Besides the cuteness factor of their packaging, they are great and longwear. If you do mascaras, make sure they’re waterproof, and finish with a cream blush—they do look like our own inner cheek color! Lastly, drink lots and lots of water and keep hydrated. You’ll find that you glow from within. Whatever choices you make, I wish you a hot, sweaty, fun-filled summer! Cheers,

W

hether you live close by the water or nowhere near it at all, chances are you’ll be in somebody’s pool this summer, or perhaps chilling by a lake. I love the water and the feel of summer that it brings—so peaceful, yet so energizing. I like to plan my water ensembles based on what’s on the menu. If we have adults lounging around, I like to wear a one-piece suit, more suitable for boating or water sports. An “everything big and bold” approach also goes with lake chilling. Think big hat,

big sunglasses and perhaps a nice, big silky scarf to tie as a sarong or as a dress. Complete the look with a big straw bag, practical yet chic. Obviously, not every lake get-together means chic and sophisticated, so if a picnic by the lake is the plan, you can still wear your onepiece suit, but pair it with denim cut-offs or boyfriend shorts. A smaller hat, fedora style, might be more appropriate for the occasion also. Now let’s say that you’ve got the kids and you’re going to the pool. I, myself, like to wear a

two-piece bathing suit because it allows me to get a little tan while playing with the kids. I personally don’t care much for sunbathing—I think I lack the patience for it, and I get a more all-over tan by walking around sweating and being in and out of the water. For a gateway like this, I suggest you wear a sundress or a long cotton scarf to tie yourself into on top of the bathing suit. A sporty hat, such as a baseball cap, and aviatorstyle sunglasses would also be cool with this look. As a finishing touch, consider bringing a plastic or canvas bag to the

Take the urine color test!

per day. Don’t rely on thirst as an indication to rehydrate. Up to two hours prior to outdoor exercise and activity, consume 16 ounces of fluid. Chug 8 ounces at a time instead of sipping, as this helps the gut empty the fluid into your system more quickly. Carry a bottle with you during outdoor activities, and drink 4-8 ounces of water for every 15-20 minutes of activity. Choose carbohydrate drinks for exercise lasting more than an hour, and replace your electrolytes after with salty foods, bananas and citrus fruit. And don’t forget to double check yourself by taking the urine color test! Everyone is different, so regulate and adjust your fluid intake based on your urine color test results.

Summer is finally here and, more than likely, you have taken your indoor activities outside. If you haven’t started to increase your intake of water with the hotter days, increased humidity and time spent in the sun, you may find yourself suffering from dehydration. Some dehydration symptoms include thirst, dry mouth, sleepiness, weakness, dizziness, nausea, disorientation, rapid resting heart rate and prolonged muscle soreness. You may also notice body hair standing up. If these symptoms go unnoticed, you may experience major heat illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke or even death. Some of these signs listed above can be associated with other health issues. Therefore, a better sign or indication of dehydration is in the color of your urine. Normal urine color is the color of lemon juice. Dark yellow, strong smelling urine and decreased frequency of urination can signal dehydration. To stay hydrated, aim to drink half your body weight in ounces

Changing

Lives By Matthew Hume

A

s a top-quality cardiologist, Dr. Saeed Shaikh places the highest importance on the improved living he brings to his heart patients. And where his family is concerned, he strives to be the best husband and father he can be. These aspects of Dr. Shaikh’s life are what drew us at ActiveLIFE to feature him this month. But when our editor first approached him about this article, Dr. Shaikh assumed we wanted to do a feature on squash. No—not the squash meandering its way across your garden—but the fast-paced racquet sport enjoyed by so many worldwide (including our editor and Dr. Shaikh, who play at the same court). And so, I promised Dr. Shaikh that squash would see its fair share of the ActiveLIFE spotlight. But first... In his roles as an interventional cardiologist at Franciscan St. Francis Health Heart Center, and managing partner at Indiana Heart Physicians, a practice with Franciscan Physician Network, Dr. Shaikh specializes in the treatment of

acquired and adult congenital heart diseases through the use of catheter-based procedures. In short, he explains it this way: “If somebody comes to me for a congenital heart disease, say a hole in the heart, that’s leading to heart failure or heart rhythm problems, I go in and fix the problem through the catheter, plugging up the hole in the heart. The patient receives improvement in their systems, they get back to their regular activities of daily living, living life with their families, and you see their heart remodel— it starts becoming normal sized.” This immediate lifechanging effect that catheterbased technologies can have on patients is reason number one that Dr. Shaikh felt drawn to cardiology, specifically interventional cardiology, when he was in medical school. But there’s more to it than that. “You get immediate gratification by seeing improvement of a patient’s symptoms, and as you follow them year after year, those effects last as long as the patient is living.” Of course,

while it’s up to the individual to make the lifestyle changes needed to reap the greatest and longest benefits, the work Dr. Shaikh performs leads to lasting change and vastly improved lives. When I spoke to Dr. Shaikh, he had just returned home from Chicago after attending the 2015 Transcatheter Valve Therapies conference. “What was most exciting to me [from the conference] is that the newer generation trans-catheter valves are improving dramatically. Most of the problems we used to see with leaking of the valves or complications with the entry or access site are going down tremendously,” he says. Dr. Shaikh goes on to explain that with the decrease in complication risks, in certain patient populations today’s transcatheter valve procedures are nearing the point of being as good as surgical valves — without having to open the heart for surgery.

The Road to Franciscan St. Francis After his completion of medical school, three years of training in internal medicine, and another three years of clinical cardiology—it was at that point that Dr. Shaikh trained specifically to be an interventional cardiologist. By the time he completed training, Dr. Shaikh already had many years of quality experience under his belt. “I was looking for a group with great quality cardiologists that would offer me a lifestyle so that my family and my obligations to them would not get compromised,” he tells me. Dr. Shaikh saw in Indiana Heart Physicians (IHP), the kind of group he wanted to be a part of—one in which he could grow, developing his skills in fields such as structural heart disease, and also be a part of the decision making from the very start. “At that time, we had 15 cardiologists, and we’ve always been a very democratic group,” he explains.

25

“We all gather around the table, discuss different opportunities for our patients, and we vote to determine a certain intervention that will fix a problem or improve patient outcomes.” At Franciscan St. Francis, a patient’s heart isn’t just in the hands of Dr. Shaikh or another cardiologist. It’s in the care of an entire team of the very best cardiologists all looking out for the patient’s best interest.

days, and if we can figure out how to prevent plaque from depositing in the blood vessels to begin with, then we’ve made a true impact on the whole process of disease.” Dr. Shaikh explains that these days, newer agents—not statins—are being researched as to the impact they have on cardiac outcomes, and he’s pleased to continue his involvement with this ongoing lipid research.

A Passion for Research For many years, Dr. Shaikh directed research at Franciscan St. Francis, and in talking with him, one immediately picks up on his excitement surrounding research and the advances it brings. Take a look at heart stents, for instance. Dr. Shaikh points to the fact that stents are improving year after year— getting safer and more and more effective. “That happens when you have clinical research randomizing thousands of patients in FDA-approved trials,” he says. “That helps us find out which stents, or which other devices, are better than others. And in doing this, we’ve noticed that over the past decades, our outcomes in cardiology are improving dramatically. People would come in before with renarrowing of stents all the time, but that’s becoming more and more rare with the newer stents out there. That all happens due to research.”

Family Matters After talking to Dr. Shaikh about his areas of research and the life-changing procedures he performs, I tell him that I worry sometimes about people like him. Because if there’s one thing I’m personally passionate about as a writer for ActiveLIFE, it’s the importance of work-life balance. He puts my worries to rest. “The demands of my profession are such that I barely have enough time, but it’s there,” he says. “I still get enough time off to have fun with my family, and I personally don’t feel that time allocated to them is less

He points also to research on lipid management and the use of statin drugs. “This is a very neat and novel concept in that it’s not a matter of treating diseases that have already occurred, but rather preventing a disease from occurring,” Dr. Shaikh says. “Preventing plaque formation before it even starts is the holy grail of a lot of the diseases we treat these

26

ACTIVE

than optimal.” Dr. Shaikh tells me that this is one of the best things about the cardiology practice at Franciscan. With 25 cardiologists, each is able to

help cover for another when that person is on vacation—without compromising patient care.

As for quality time with his family, Dr. Shaikh counts simply being together as the most valuable aspect of that time. “I don’t need to go to an amusement park or exciting place for vacation,” he says. “I enjoy going to a lakefront and spending time with my family. Shout Out to Squash Okay—I promised. Why in the world is Dr. Shaikh so passionate about squash? “In 30 minutes, burning 500 calories—it’s just

amazing,” he tells me, almost as excited about squash as he is about research. “And as a man in my mid-40s, having played squash for two decades, so far I haven’t had any permanent injuries.” These two factors— high-calorie burn and low risk of injury—along with its benefits for cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility, led Forbes magazine in 2003 to rank squash as the #1 healthiest sport. (Rowing, rock climbing and swimming were the next highest ranked.) “Even before Forbes came up with their statistical analysis, I knew squash was incredible. I can’t find anything else that burns that many calories in that short a time.” I agree with him—squash sounds pretty amazing. “Squash is such a huge public service in my opinion. I think this may be the best kept secret in getting kids to burn calories, and I would hope that the U.S. would start building more squash courts. I think we’d see a big impact on our collective health.” Dr. Shaikh counts himself fortunate to be among the top-notch cardiologists at Franciscan St. Francis Health Heart Center. More so, he’s grateful to successfully balance time spent in his life’s work, right alongside time together with the family he loves. “To me, as soon as you do an intervention and it’s successful, the patient is very happy—and that’s an immediate gratification,” Dr. Shaikh says. “But the biggest bang for the buck is when they come back to me and tell me they’re back to playing with their children or grandchildren, and they’re back to keeping house and mowing their lawn—that’s the most personal satisfaction I get, and it just can’t be replaced with anything else.”

BURGER

Some like ‘em thin and crispy around the edges. Some like ‘em plump and juicy. No matter. Because for meat lovers, nothing beats a good burger.

H

ow to make a great hamburger is a question that has bedeviled the nation for generations, for as long as Americans have had griddles and broilers, for as long as summertime shorts-wearing cooks have gone into the yard to grill. But the answer is simple, according to many of those who make and sell the nation’s best hamburgers: Cook on heavy, cast-iron pans and griddles. Cook outside if you like, heating the pan over the fire of a grill, but never on the grill itself. The point is to allow rendering beef fat to gather around the patties as they cook, like a primitive high-heat confit. “That is the best way to do it,” says George Motz, the documentary filmmaker who released Hamburger America in 2005 and has since become a leading authority on hamburgers. “The beef fat collected in a hot skillet acts both as a cooking and a

flavoring agent,” Mr. Motz says. “Grease is a condiment that is as natural as the beef itself. A great burger should be like a baked potato or sashimi. It should taste completely of itself.” Great hamburgers fall into two distinct categories. There is the traditional griddled hamburger of diners and takeaway spots, smashed thin and cooked crisp on its edges. And there is the pub- or tavern-style hamburger, plump and juicy, with a thick char that gives way to tender, often blood-red meat within. The diner hamburger has a precooked weight of 3 to 4 ounces, roughly an ice-creamscoop’s worth of meat. The pubstyle one is heavier, but not a great deal heavier. Its precooked weight ought to fall, experts say, between 7 and 8 ounces. Whichever style you cook, pay close attention to the cuts of beef used in the grind. The traditional hamburger is made of ground chuck steak, rich in

both fat and flavor, in a ratio that ideally runs about 80 percent meat, 20 percent fat. Less fat leads to a drier hamburger. Avoid, the experts say, supermarket blends advertised with words like “lean.” Too much fat, on the other hand, can lead to equally troubling issues, and a mess in both fact and flavor. “You get up around 30 percent fat,” Mr. Motz says, and there are risks. “Things happen,” he said. “Bad things. Shrinkage.” Home cooks should experiment, he said, with blends that contain from 20 to 25 percent fat. There are pitfalls to buying pre-ground supermarket chuck steak, experts say. In addition to concerns about the health risks associated with pre-ground hamburger meat, there are culinary considerations as well. The grind most markets use is “fine,” which means the fat globules in it are small. That can lead to the dreaded mushy mouth feel of a substandard hamburger. Better (and safer) to have a butcher grind your meat, asking for a coarse grind so that the ratio of meat to fat is clear to the eye. Whatever the blend, it is wise to keep the meat in the refrigerator, untouched, until you are ready to cook. “Hamburgers are one of the few meats you want to cook cold,” Mr. Motz said. “You want the fat solid when the patty goes onto the skillet. You don’t want any smearing.” Forming the patties is a delicate art. For the thin, diner-style hamburger, Mr. Motz says, simply use a spoon or an icecream scoop to extract a loose golf ball of meat from the pile, and get it onto the skillet in one swift movement. “You don’t need to set the heat below it to stun,” he said. “A mediumhot pan will do it, accompanied for the first burger with a pat of melted butter to get the process started.”

meat, producing a thin patty about the size of a hamburger bun. “Everyone freaks out about that,” Mr. Motz says. “But it’s the only time you’re touching the meat, and you’re creating this great crust in doing it.” Roughly 90 seconds later, after seasoning the meat, you can slide your spatula under the patty, flip it over, add cheese if you’re using it, and cook the hamburger through. “Most people don’t melt the cheese enough,” Mr. Motz says. He emphasizes the need to dress the hamburger with cheese as soon as the patty is flipped. “You want a curtain of cheese to enrobe the meat,” he says. “The rennet in it really adds a lot of flavor.” In choosing buns, restaurateurs may offer hamburgers on special brioche from Balthazar, or fancy English muffins from Bays. But home cooks can do very well indeed with more commercial options, in particular potato buns, which offer a soft and sturdy platform for the meat. The most important factor is, again, ratio. “The bun-to-burger ratio is incredibly important,” Mr. Motz says. “You want a soft bun, like a challah or potato, but whichever you use it shouldn’t overwhelm the burger. They should be as one.” Finally, there are condiments. You pull your burgers off the skillet, place them on the buns and then offer them to guests to dress. Ripe tomatoes and cold lettuce should be offered (“Only bibb lettuce,” Mr. Motz says, “for its crispness and ability to hold the juices of the meat”) along with ketchup, mustard and, for a hardy few, mayonnaise or mayonnaise mixtures. Onions excite some. Pickles, others. But do not overdress.

Then, a heresy to many home cooks: the smash. Use a heavy spatula to press down on the

HOME IMPROVEMENTS to apply the paint. As the brush unloads, move over and slowly drag the brush along the trim or corner. Let the bristles gently push the paint against the cut-in area where the walls meet. You may have to do this a couple of times to get complete coverage, but it will avoid excess paint along woodwork and in corners. 5. START WITH A LOADED BRUSH

PAINTING SECRETS FROM THE PROS

Professional painters are fast and efficient, and they have mastered techniques that produce top-notch results while making it all look easy. Each painter has slightly different methods and preferences, but the pros all know the trade secrets. 1. SAND AWAY FLAWS You have to start with a perfectly smooth surface to end up with perfectly painted walls or woodwork. One pro says that “sander” would be a more fitting job title than “painter,” since he spends so much time pushing sandpaper. Sanding levels outs spackle or joint-compound patches and flattens ridges around nail holes. Sanding also removes burrs and rough spots in your trim.

36

Sand the walls from the baseboard to the ceiling with fine grit sanding paper on a sanding pole. Then sand horizontally along the baseboard and ceiling. Don’t put a lot of pressure on the sanding pole or the head can flip over and damage the wall. Sand woodwork with a sanding sponge to get into crevices. 2. USE TINTED PRIMER Before the pros paint walls, they fill holes and patch cracks with joint compound. But if you paint directly over it, the compound will suck the moisture out of the paint, giving it a flat, dull look (a problem called “flashing”). Those spots will look noticeably different than the rest of the wall. To avoid that, pros prime the walls before painting.

3. PRESS TAPE WITH A PUTTY KNIFE Nothing is more discouraging when you’ve finished painting than to peel tape off the woodwork and discover the paint bled through. To avoid the pain-in-the-neck chore of scraping off the paint, do a thorough job of adhering the tape before you start. “Apply tape over the wood, then run a putty knife over the top to press down the tape for a good seal,” a painter with more than 16 years of experience says. “That’ll stop any paint bleeds.” Use blue painter’s tape instead of masking tape. Masking tape can leave behind a sticky residue that’s hard to clean off. Plus, paint can cause the tape to buckle or get wavy, which lets paint run underneath it. Painter’s tape can be left on for days (some up to two weeks) and still peel off cleanly. And it stops paint bleed without buckling. 4. PUSH PAINT TO AVOID RUNS When your brush is loaded with paint, it’s easy to create runs by applying too much paint in corners or along trim. To avoid that, start brushing about 1/2 inch away from the cut-in area

LIFE magazine |J ULY 2 0 1 5

Pros take a “load and go” approach to painting. They load the bottom 1 1/2 inches of their brushes with paint, tap each side against the inside of their container to knock off the heavy drips, and then start painting. By contrast, homeowners often take a “load and dump” approach of dragging the loaded brush along the sides of their container and wiping off most of the paint. “It doesn’t do you any good to dunk your brush in paint, then immediately wipe it all off,” says that same 16-year veteran painter. 6. WASH ROLLER COVERS Whether you buy cheap or expensive roller covers, washing them before their first use gets rid of the fuzz that inevitably comes off once you start painting. Wash them with water and a little bit of liquid soap, and run your hands up and down the covers to pull off any loose fibers (a practice called “preconditioning covers”). You can start using the roller covers right away — you don’t need to let them dry. 7. SCRAPE WINDOWS

(DON’T

TAPE)

Don’t bother taping windows when painting sashes—it takes a long time and paint usually ends up on the glass anyway. Go ahead and let paint get on the glass. Once it’s dry, simply scrape it off with a razor blade. The paint peels off in seconds. “Just be careful to not break the paint bond between the wood and the glass,” a pro cautions. “Otherwise, moisture can get on the wood and cause rot.”

LIFE Magazine Whether it’s running with the bulls or slinging tomatoes at everyone in sight, Spain has its fair share of unique festivals.

TRAVEL/EXPLORE

Breathtaking Festivals Around the World (That You Must See Before You Die!) In this issue, we start a series of reports on festivals that draw together millions of people from around the world for partying, drinking and having the time of their lives. Experience life the way it should be lived!

La Tomatina SPAIN La Tomatina is a festival held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region in Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a harmless battle, where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing and

fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. Approximately 30,000 people come to the tomato fight, multiplying by several times Buñol’s normal population of 9,000. There are not many accommodations for people who come to La Tomatina, so many participants stay in

Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38 km outside the city. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers cover their storefronts in order to protect them from the carnage. At around 11 AM, the first event of the Tomatina begins. A ham is placed upon a cockaigne pole (a large, greased pole), and the tomato fight can begin only when someone is able to climb to the top and bring it down. People struggle against each other, climbing atop one another, in order to be the one to pull down the ham. With this victory, the tomato-throwing begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. The signal for the beginning of the fight is a firing of the cannon, and the chaos begins. Aside from a few rules, the battle is generally every man for himself. Participants are encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, the tomatoes must be squished before throwing, for added safety. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into the fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. Tearing others’ clothing is highly frowned upon. An hour or two after the tomatoes start flying, the fighting ends with another firing of the cannon. At this point no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. People find water to wash themselves, most likely at the Buñol River. How Did La Tomatina Start? The tomato fight has been a thriving tradition in Buñol since 1944 or 1945, but no one is completely certain how the event originated. Possible theories on how the Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends,

40

ACTIVE

LIFE magazine |J ULY 2 0 1 5

a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, or possibly the anarchic aftermath of an accidental tomato-truck spillage. One popular theory is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed so much that it was repeated the next year, and the year after that, and so on. The holiday was banned during the Spanish State period under Francisco Franco for having no religious significance, but returned in the 1970s after his demise. The festival is in honor of the town’s patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary. La Tomatina: USA Version La Tomatina Buñol has inspired similar celebrations in some cities here in the States. Since 1982, the town of Twin Lakes, Lake County, Colorado has held a tomato fight called the “Colorado Texas Tomato War,” in which Texans and Coloradans square off with tomatoes. The city of Reno, Nevada also has an annual hour-long tomato fight that started in 2009. The event seems to take place on the last Sunday of August and is organized by the American Cancer Society. Organizers named the festival La Tomatina, and give full credit for the idea to the Spanish festival. Milwaukee’s East Side Association holds an annual Tomato Romp during September in coordination with a Bloody Mary contest. Held since at least 2009 it is limited to 250 people in a caged-in area. On July 27, 2013, the city of Chicago held a moderately sized tomato fight called the “tomato blast in homage to the tomatina.”
