ne of the Romanian largest city, Brasov is conveniently placed in the middle of the country, sorrounded by the Carpathian Mountains with the tops of Bucegi (2505 m) and Fagaras (2544 m) mountains. Named by the Germans Kronstadt, Brasov is a part of Transylvania, well known for its dense forests, medieval towns, lone castels on rocky outcrops and of course the legend of Dracula. A town with turbulent history, Brasov was colonised 800 years ago by Germans who significantly influenced it's cultural heritage. During the centuries, Romanians, Hungarians and Germans have lived next to each other, all of them having important historical links with this region. In spite of the colonisation and the Turks ravaging, the Romanians have done a great job preserving their culture, language and traditions. Ascending Mount Tampa, situated in the middle of the city, you'll be able to make out different parts of Brasov: the German part of the town with red roofs crammed between straight streets surrounding the Council Square (Piata Sfatului), the Romanian Schei, a combination of small streets, jumbled houses petering out towards the hills and the later addition to Brasov, the 18th and 19th century expansion and the flats and huge factories from the last 50 years. In your visit to Brasov there are some sights you shouldn't miss: • The Black Church, the largest church between Vienna and Istanbul whose name was given after the disaster in 1698, when Brasov's Great Fire blackened its walls. Built between 1385 and 1477, the Black Church has an original Gothic interior, the perfect place to listen to the impressive 4000 pipe organ; • The Council Square (Piata Sfatului) which has in the middle the old city hall dating from 1420; • Timpa Mountain; • Brasov fortifications: the Catherine Gate, built in 1559, once the main entrance to the medieval town Kronstadt, the Schei Gate, the Black and the White Towers; • Schei District; • Brasov Citadel, part of the outer fortifications. Also the surroundings of Brasov are places you will not forget: Bran and Rasnov, with their impressive castels associated with the legend of Dracula; Predeal, a great place to breathe in some mountain air and Poiana Brasov, a sportsman's resort.
