LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Greetings my friends,

Edibles Magazine Beauty Issue.

This is truly a crazy time to be alive and part of history. The president’s impeachment just ended in an acquittal. It looks like “Space Force” is going to be an actual branch of the military and Elon Musk is building Tesla pickup trucks that look like stainless steel versions of the armored mobile transport vehicle from “Aliens.” Also, in the Miss Universe pageant in Atlanta, Miss Canada wore a bright green cannabis themed showgirl costume and it became a pretty big sensation. Alyssa Boston is her name and we’ve featured her as this month’s special cover story, it’s The

We recently watched “Long Shot” starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron. As with every Seth Rogen movie involving cannabis and other recreational substances, all of the references were spot on accurate. CBD oil, blunts, Molly/MDMA, and more were all referenced both correctly and believably. I don’t know if Charlize Theron has taken Molly before, but she’s very convincing in the movie. She probably has. Gwyneth Paltrow says she’s taken MDMA before in the first episode of The Goop Lab, her new quasi-non-fiction program on Netflix. There’s a full review of the episode in this issue alongside the new season of Shrill on Hulu. Spoiler alert: Shrill is better. It would probably be a lot more interesting to watch a show where Gwyneth Paltrow takes MDMA with Charlize Theron. To make it really good they should invite Aidy Bryant and Seth Rogen. Meanwhile in Oklahoma, the Sooner State and my home state, hundreds of medical marijuana supporters descended on Oklahoma’s state Capitol in Oklahoma City recently to warn lawmakers not to infringe on their legal right to grow, consume and sell cannabis. The advocates were upset about several bills filed by state lawmakers that would increase restrictions

on the production and consumption of medical cannabis. Proposed bills could potentially ban cannabis advertising on billboards, prevent future dispensaries from being located near churches and give cities and towns more leeway to regulate medical cannabis businesses. Oklahoma is a pretty wild market right now so it’ll be incredibly interesting to see how all of this unfolds there. I’ll be sure to keep you updated. The Beauty Issue also features a beauty themed crossword puzzle, a list of the top 7 cannabis beauty products, news, politics and product reviews. There’s also a new legal column for The Pot Brothers at Law. Enjoy the Beauty Issue! As always, smile at your budtender, tip your delivery driver, and know your dose. “Truth is not obliged to stick to possibilities.”

INVESTOR CORNER

POT STOCKS & STOCKED POTS: APHRIA INC. (APHA) & CANADIAN CANNABIS BEEF STEW Patrick Ian Moore

Aphria Inc. (APHA) is a Canadian cannabis company. It is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, and has a market capitalization of $1.2 billion, as of January 2020, making it one of the largest cannabis companies in the world. EuroLife Brands Inc. (EURPH) has finalized an agreement with Aphria Inc. to redevelop and redesign its budtender education portal, accessed by hundreds of cannabis retailers and staff across Canada. Experts say it’s a smart time to invest in this new partnership. Canadian Canna Beef Stew 2 ¼ pounds cubed beef stew meat 1 onion, chopped 4 potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces 4 carrots, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces 1 turnip, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup cannabis infused olive oil 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 cups beef stock 3 cups vegetable stock 1 ½ cups Irish stout beer ½ cup pearl barley 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 bay leaves ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions Cut any excess fat from the beef, reserving about 2 tablespoons of fat. Place the fat into a large pot over low heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid fat renders out, about 15 minutes. Remove and discard any solid bits that remain. Place the beef into the hot melted beef fat, and brown on all sides over medium heat, stirring often, about 10 minutes. Cook until nearly all the beef juices have evaporated and begun to brown. Stir in the onion, and cook and stir until the onion starts to become translucent, about 2 minutes. Stir in potatoes, carrots, and turnip, and sprinkle on the flour in several batches, cooking and stirring to coat the ingredients with flour. Stir in the garlic, and cook and stir the meat and vegetables for about 2 minutes to remove any raw flour taste. In a saucepan over medium-low heat, mix the beef stock and vegetable stock together, and heat until hot but not boiling. Pour the stock mixture, Irish stout beer, barley, thyme, bay leaves, salt, and pepper over the beef and vegetables and stir to dissolve any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the pot. Bring the stew to a boil, reduce heat, cover the pot, and simmer until the meat is very tender, about 2 hours. Stir every 30 minutes, and check seasoning after 1 hour of cooking time. Add cannabis olive oil and stir 20 minutes before the stew is finished.

INDUSTRY NEWS

MedMen Tries To File For Bankruptcy, But Can't, Then CEO Adam Bierman Resigns B. Le Grand

MedMen was recently parodied on the popular show “South Park,” where they were portrayed as another big business company that behaves like a jerk. Aggressively expanding too quickly in an industry that hasn’t worked out it’s kinks yet is part of the larger industry woes contributing to Medmen’s demise. The cannabis industry continues to go through regulatory changes, and MedMen’s biggest market, California is suffering rather than thriving, due to quadruple taxation, and an impenetrable illicit market. MedMen has engaged FTI Consulting to manage its outstanding balances to vendors and partners. Former MedMen CEO Adam Bierman told CNN Business in January prior to resigning, “We absolutely paused on making [accounts payable] payments as we went through the restructuring so that, with FTI’s help, we could organize the manner in which we were going to pay off our … balances as is common in any restructuring.” In an effort to get out of the red, MedMen cut hundreds of jobs, sold off stores and licenses they considered non-core assets, they’re attempting to rework financing agreements, as well as attempting to renegotiate vendor payment terms. “As part of the restructuring, the company has been actively working with its vendor partners on modifying payment terms, which

in some cases include stock consideration,” MedMen Chief Financial Officer Zeeshan Hyder, said in an emailed statement to CNN Business. “Like other retailers, the company is in constant communication with its vendors and is working towards solutions that are in the best interest of both parties.” “For the most part, the product manufacturers that we’re dealing with have been very supportive,” Bierman said. “The same way that we are very supportive as adult-use programs launch and evolve on a state by state basis — where these product manufacturers, they’re not perfect either.” Bierman referenced how MedMen has been patient as product manufacturers have had to adapt to new regulations. MedMen and other companies, he said, are trying to navigate industry-wide turbulence. Morgan Paxhia, co-founder of Poseidon Asset Management, a cannabis investment firm said, “You can’t do that to companies; it’ll destroy them,” adding that taking restricted stock on the Canadian exchanges with no likely immediate liquidity won’t solve vendors’ near-term cash needs. “This is not like a General Electric share.” He said asking for such arrangements puts pressure on smaller brands that might not have the ability or deep resources to weather challenging times. Complicating matters further is that because cannabis is still illegal on a federal level, MedMen can’t actually file for bankruptcy protections. In addition to owing vendors hundreds of thousands of dollars for months on end, they are attempting to extend the maturity date of a $78 million secured term loan. After news hit of MedMen’s struggles, the flamboyant co-founder of MedMen and CEO,

Multi-state operator and the epitome of corporate cannabis, MedMen Enterprises’ hardships have become evident. Being a public company and as large as they are, it has become public knowledge that they are behind on this payments to debtors and vendors. MedMen sent out several letters at the end of January attempting to negotiate the debt with vendors, even offering stock as payment.

and I have a business degree; I graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, so I was always very interested in how the business side of this industry was going to work. So it was always an interest of mine, and when I was preparing for Miss Universe we always talked about the national costume. In Canada there’s no set national costume. So a couple of years ago we were a snowflake, and people have been a hockey player in the past you know, or a maple leaf, and so we’ve had some sort of cute costumes that represented us but I didn’t just want to wear another maple leaf or something. We discussed it with my team and all thought it’s kind of a controversial idea because federally it’s not legal in the states and internationally it’s thought of as a terrible drug in some countries. Miss Universe hosts ninety girls from all over the world and all eyes would be on us, so we didn’t know for sure if it was the right play or not, and after discussing it over we had to clear it with the Miss Universe organization and Tyler Perry studios to make sure it okay, and they thought it was a good idea and I thought

AB: I actually am retiring this year, because making Miss Universe is the highest accomplishment you can get in pageantry, so I’ve reached my goal and it’s time to start a new dream. And for me I’ve kind of been tapping into the cannabis industry ever since my costume got so much attention, a lot of cannabis [companies] have been reaching out and I’ve made some partnerships. I’m just starting a Youtube channel with a company here in Windsor called the Cannabis Investor, we do interviews with CEOs of different companies and things like that in the industry, so there’s a couple of new things coming I can’t talk about yet, so I’m getting into the cannabis industry and hopefully am going to start my own business soon. That’s the next goal. It’s cool how it’s worked out this way.

before. I use a couple of CBD creams, lots of skin products and hair products that contain hemp. For me it was always just a personal choice. I don’t think my passion is represented by whether I use it or not. People always ask, and it always reminds me of, that ever since I was little I’ve advocated for mental illness because my uncle suffers from schizophrenia, so just because I don’t suffer from a mental illness doesn’t mean that I can’t advocate for it. Right? That’s how I look at it. It’s the same thing, I advocate for the greater good. For the people who need this either as a medical benefit or from an economic standpoint, a benefit for our country, I think it’s a positive thing that we are leading the world in, right now, and that’s where this passion came from. There’s been a stigma that surrounded cannabis since the 1920s based off of racism pretty much, so people, especially in an older generations, are just under this stigma, and that’s why I wanted to be an advocate for it, because since I don’t use it, people who are against it are more inclined to listen to me than someone who is a heavy user and that they’d just think are biased. LEGAL CORNER

Stigma of the Stoner

Mark D. Wasserman, Esq.

If someone called me a stoner 25 years ago, it would have offended me because I was a law student studying my ass off and was in no way lazy. The word stoner automatically came with the connotation of being lazy or a loser, or worse a lazy loser. Today, I wear it like a badge of honor. Gawd damn right I’m a stoner, a successful stoner! Over 60% of the country is in favor of cannabis (either medicinal and/ or adult use) and the time has come to break the stigma of the stoner. The argument has long been made, “my nephew smokes pot all day and is just lazy” or “that friend of yours is a pothead loser”. Well, I am here to tell you that your nephew is just lazy and happens to smoke cannabis and your friend is a loser who happens to smoke cannabis. It is NOT the cannabis that makes someone lazy or unsuccessful, it is that person and their own will, drive, determination or lack thereof. The Pot Brothers at Law have been at the forefront of trying to break the stigma. Issue 61 I Page 16

EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

LEGAL CORNER We are the only attorneys (that we are aware of) out there on social media openly using cannabis in all forms. We toke joints, blunts, vapes, dabs, bongs and use edibles, tinctures, oils and rubs. We have been encouraging and challenging other professionals to come out of the green closet to further show the world that cannabis users come in all forms and are extremely successful. I know doctors, lawyers, judges, politicians, teachers and so many others who use cannabis but refuse to go public. They even hide it from their families and are afraid to speak to their children about it. You can be certain of one thing if you do not educate your children at home about cannabis (and anything for that matter) they will learn it from Johnny and it will be a different version of the truth. The negative stigma continues to interfere with a parent’s decision to properly educate their children. Once we can breakthrough the nonsense that a cannabis user must be a loser and lazy, we can get to the core fact that most stoners are successful. I remember when we would sneak off to grab a few hits from a pipe, then douse our eyes with Visine (to remove the red eyes), pop a breath mint and spray so much cologne that we stunk like French whores, all in a combined effort to hide the fact that we just toked up. Today, my eyes are red, so what. I smell like cannabis, so what. Usually when I walk into a store or restaurant I am complimented on the way I smell, which quickly turns into a smoke sesh outside with some new friends. The Beauty Issue

US NEWS

New Mexico's New Cannabis Laws Bishop Henry

A democratic backed bill to legalize recreational marijuana businesses across the state of New Mexico is going under its first public review by lawmakers in early Februar y. The legislative committee will meet on the Senate floor to discuss the bill which has received a lot of interest because it not only would subsidize medical marijuana but it will also expunge past cannabis convictions.

This legislation is in response to rising prices and limited availability of medical marijuana. No states currently mandate medical cannabis sales according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation into law decriminalizing the possession of personal use amounts of cannabis which took effect on July 1, 2019. New Mexico has been trying to maintain control of the Cannabis industry. Last year, a bill that would have involved state-run cannabis stores won House approval before dying on the Senate floor without a second look. Talks began again this year as Republicans are backing legalization efforts.

Edibles Magazine™ Issue 61

This bill, which was written by Democratic Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino, would subsidize medical cannabis for low-income patients, expunge past pot convictions, and would override local governments who have been reluctant to allow the Cannabis industry to come to their cities. The hope is that forcing local governments to accept new businesses will help eliminate the cannabis black market that currently exists.

18

New Mexico established its medical marijuana program in 2007. Under this new bill, recreational dispensaries will need to make medical cannabis available to those patients who qualify under specified medical conditions. The list of medical conditions includes: Cancer, post-traumatic stress, and chronic pain.

The current initiative before the lawmakers closely follows recommendations of a legalization policy task force. The bill, if passed, would reserve tax revenue from cannabis sales for law enforcement and public anti-intoxicated driving education. This bill, however, goes against the task force’s recommendation of allowing small quantities of home grown marijuana. Currently, any amount of home grown weed in New Mexico carries a felony penalty. Medical cannabis patients have been able to cultivate weed since former Governor Bill Richardson signed the bill into law in April 2007. New Mexico was the first state to ever pass cannabis use for medical laws in 1978. Known as the Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act. It allowed the use of cannabis for medical purposes through an FDA approved program.

CANNABIS INFUSED RECIPES This month we have Alyssa Boston, Miss Canada, featured on the cover of our “Beauty Issue” and she was cool enough to help us put together a special set of Canadian and Canada inspired cannabis infused recipes to share. The infused Poutine recipe, known as the quintessential Canadian food, was supplied by Alyssa and the Bud Butter Tarts were her suggestion too. Poutine was created in the Centre-du-Québec area in the late 1950s. Several restaurants in the area claim to be the originators of the dish, but no official consensus exists. Please post pictures of any of these dishes you make and tag us on IG @ediblesmagazine.

For the Pastry: 1½ cups all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ cup cold cannabis butter, cubed ¼ cup, cold cannabis coconut oil, cubed, or substitute more canna-butter 1 large egg yolk 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Filtered ice water

24

For the Filling: ½ cup packed light brown sugar ½ cup corn or brine rice syrup 1 large, room-temperature egg 2 tablespoons very soft butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Pinch of kosher salt 1/3 cup currants, sultana raisins, chopped walnuts or pecan halves Make the Pastry: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Use a pastry blender to cut in the canna butter and infused coconut oil until the mixture is in very fine crumbs. In a 1-cup measuring cup,

use a small whisk or fork to combine the egg yolk, lemon juice and enough ice water to come to 1/3 cup. Gradually drizzle over the flour mixture, stirring briskly with a fork until the pastry holds together. You may need to add a little more ice water to gather up the last of the dry bits. Press into a disc, and wrap and chill until firm. Let stand at room temperature to soften a little before rolling. Make the Filling: Preheat the oven to 450°. In a medium bowl, mix together the sugar, syrup, egg, butter, vanilla, lemon juice and salt until smooth. On a floured surface, roll out pastry to a 4-inch thickness. Using a 4-inch round cookie cutter, cut out 12 circles, rerolling scraps if necessary. Fit into muffin cups. Divide the currants among the pastry shells. Spoon the filling over the currants until three-quarters full. Bake in the bottom third of the oven for about 12 minutes, or until filling is puffed and bubbly and pastry is golden. Let stand on a rack for a minute; immediately run a metal spatula around the tarts to loosen. Carefully slide the spatula under the tarts and lift out to cool on a rack. The baker gets to eat all the tarts that break in transit, or give them as a reward to favourite people. You can freeze them for a month, or store them in the fridge for up to a week. Warm the canna tarts up to serve and savor.

Vinaigrette 1/3 cup lemon juice or red wine vinegar 3/4 cup extra-virgin, cannabis infused olive oil 3 Tbsp finely chopped shallot 2 Tbsp finely chopped fresh basil 1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh thyme 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh oregano or tarragon 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and freshly ground black pepper Salad: 2 grilled or otherwise cooked tuna steaks* (8 oz each) or 2-3 cans of tuna 6 hard boiled eggs, peeled and quartered lengthwise 1 1/4 pounds small young red potatoes or fingerling potatoes Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 medium heads Boston lettuce

Directions: Marinate tuna steaks in a little cannabis infused olive oil for an hour. Heat a large skillet on medium high heat, or place on a hot grill. Cook the steaks 2 to 3 minutes on each side until cooked through. Make vinaigrette by putting the oil, lemon juice or vinegar, shallots, herbs, and mustard in a jar. Cover with a lid and shake until well blended. Add salt and pepper to taste. Marinate onion slices in some of the vinaigrette. Place onion slices in a small bowl and sprinkle with 3 Tbsp of the vinaigrette. Cook the potatoes, cut, and dress with vinaigrette: Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with 2 inches of water. Add 1 Tbsp of salt. Heat on high to bring to a boil. Lower the heat to maintain a simmer. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes or so, until the potatoes are fork tender and drain. While the potatoes are warm, cut them into quarters. Place them in a bowl and dress them with 1/4 cup of the vinaigrette. Boil the green beans in salted water. While the potatoes are cooking, fill a medium sized pot halfway with water, and add 2 teaspoons of salt. Bring to a boil on high heat. Add the green beans to the boiling water. Cook until tender but still firm to the bite, about 4 minutes. Drain and either rinse with cold water. Arrange on a bed of lettuce on a serving platter. Cut tuna into 1/2-inch thick slices. Put tuna in the center of lettuce. Sprinkle the tomatoes and onions around the tuna. Arrange the potatoes and green beans in mounds at the edge of the lettuce. Arrange hard boiled eggs, olives, and capers/anchovies in mounds on the lettuce bed. Drizzle everything with the remaining cannabis infused vinaigrette. Sprinkle with capers if using. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature.

Infused Poutine

Instructions: Prepare the Gravy: In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in the water and set aside. In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the flour and cook, stirring regularly, for about 5 minutes, until the mixture turns golden brown. Add the beef and chicken broth and bring to a boil, stirring with a whisk. Stir in half of the cornstarch mixture and simmer for a minute or so. If you'd like your gravy thicker, add a more of the cornstarch mixture, in small increments, as needed, to thicken. Season with pepper. Taste and add additional salt, if necessary, to taste. Once it’s done, add the cannabis tincture and stir. ½ a teaspoon should be plenty. Make ahead and re-warm or keep warm until your fries are ready.

Edibles Magazine™ Issue 61

For Deep-Fried Fries: Prepare your potatoes and cut into 1/2-inch thick sticks. Place into a large bowl and cover completely with cold water. Allow to stand at least one hour or several hours. When ready to cook, heat your oil in your deep fryer or large, wide, heavy cooking pot to 300° F. Remove the potatoes from the water and place onto a sheet of paper towel. Blot to remove as much excess moisture as possible. Add your fries to the 300°F oil and cook for 5-8 minutes, just until potatoes are starting to cook but are not yet browned. Remove potatoes from oil and scatter on a wire rack. Increase oil temperature to 375°F Once oil is heated to that temperature, return the potatoes to the fryer and cook until potatoes are golden brown. Remove to a paper towel-lined bowl.

To Prepare Poutine: Add your fried or baked fries to a large, clean bowl. Season lightly with salt while still warm. Add a ladle of hot poutine gravy to the bowl and using tongs, toss the fries in the gravy. Add more gravy, as needed to mostly coat the fries. Add the cheese curds and toss with the hot fries and gravy. Sprinkle with freshly ground pepper. Serve immediately and enjoy. EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

Massachusetts Lawmakers Hear the Case to Ban Pot Billboards and Expanding Medical Marijuana Safe Access for Veterans Bishop Henry

Edibles Magazine™ Issue 61

The Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on Cannabis Policy met in January to hear arguments on two issues: expanding medical access for veterans and banning cannabis related billboards. Veterans from several branches of the military were on hand to speak to the committee members in favor of expanding VA benefits to include medical cannabis. The bill to expand veteran rights was filed by Representative Michael Soter, a Republican from Bellingham. Lawmakers also heard testimony on a separate bill which was filed by Democrat Senator Diana DiZoglio. This bill wants to prevent billboards going up too close to where children are exposed to their message.

and Afghanistan, and in 2016, the VA treated roughly 68,000 veterans for opioid addiction. Between 2010 and 2016, 6,485 veterans in the VA health care system died of opioid-related causes. “Cannabis helps me in ways that 57 medications that the Department of VA Affairs had me trying.” Mandile told committee members, “…[Marijuana] helped me achieve healing in my mind, body, and soul.” The bill would allow for Veterans to submit VA disability documents in lieu of Doctor certifications. Doctor certifications must be renewed every year and can cost up to $150. Medical cannabis is not taxed and is more readily available and it comes in a greater variety than recreational cannabis. Ellen Taylor Brown, an Air Force veteran said veterans were desperate for help with buying cannabis. She said she spent an entire day waiting in line with hundreds of other veterans at a company that offered one-time free medical marijuana certifications. “Everybody says ‘thank you’ to a veteran,” Brown said. “But you, right here, have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to directly impact those veterans for the better.”

Speaking in favor of expanding VA benefits was Iraq Army Veteran, Stephen Mandile, who appeared with his Service Dog. Mandile was injured in 2005 and was prescribed opioids to treat his pain. He unfortunately became addicted and began to withdraw from his family and even attempted suicide. Representative Soter says the veterans in Massachusetts, according to a Department of Social Health Report, are three times more likely to die of an opioid overdose, which is higher than the National average. According to militarytimes.com in 2015, VA officials reported they had seen a 55 percent Shaleen Title, of the Cannabis Control increase in opioid use disorders among Committee, told the members that the bill veterans following combat operations in Iraq made sense and addressed concerns she’d EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

EDIBLES DISTRIBUTION FULFILLMENT & SALES

Opposed to the bill were medical marijuana participants who argued that access should be expanded for all patients, not just veterans. Dr. Jordan Tishler, a physician who specializes in cannabis, submitted written testimony arguing that the bill would side-step medical supervision and undermine veterans’ health by eliminating important protections against potential harm and overuse. Tishler wrote, “Any current illness is an ongoing process subject to evolution and development worthy of care and guidance from medical professionals.” The Committee on Cannabis Control also heard arguments about a bill that was filed by Democrat Senator Diana DiZoglio. She said she filed the bill after hearing that a billboard for Weedmaps was placed above a school bus stop in Haverhill, Massachusetts. According to DiZoglio, the billboard showed a young woman looking for dispensaries on her phone. Current state regulations restrict Cannabis companies from advertising on billboards unless they “reasonably expect” at least 85% of the intended audience is over 21 years old. However, these rules only apply to licensed companies, not to websites like Weedmaps. “The intent of the legislature was there…to make sure children were protected from invasive advertisements,” Senator DiZoglio said. Hilary King, a cannabis consultant, testified against the ban saying that the current rules are sufficient to protect kids. King says that enacting more restrictions on cannabis and not on other adult businesses like lottery, tobacco, alcohol, and strip clubs is “unjustifiable reefer-madness stigma.” A reference to the paranoia raised by the 1936 propaganda film “Reefer Madness” which raised outrageous claims on the effects of Cannabis. The Joint Committee on Cannabis Policy did not say when it would vote on the two bills but if approved the measures would go before the The Beauty Issue

This pipe is designed to give you a clean and easy smoking experience. These are easy to find in smoke shops and head shops and depending on your state’s cannabis laws they might be available in dispensaries. You can also get them online in bulk and at a great price but they’re pretty affordable everywhere. I absolutely recommend having a few Chillums on hand all the time. They make good gifts too and are convenient for travelling.

We were fortunate enough to get some of these bars while we were in Las Vegas visiting the Planet 13 Dispensary. Planet 13 is the largest dispensary in the world and is open 24 hours a day. It’s pretty amazing and feels a lot like you’re visiting a mall of America for cannabis. The pistachio, dark chocolate and chili pepper combination might sound strange but don’t be scared. It’s legitimately one of the best tasting chocolate bars I’ve had in forever. It also got me very high and was infused in a way that made dosing really simple. Vegas was definitely a great place to enjoy this edible. I recommend going to the arcade at Circus Circus once it kicks in and just make sure you don’t accidentally sign up to go to any timeshare meetings. It’s never worth it.

It's easy to clean and maintain, but also easy to replace if you find that you need to dispose of it quickly, or even in the event that it breaks.

Goop Takes Shrooms & Shrill Does Dabs

Edibles Magazine™ Issue 61

Patrick Ian Moore

Both Gwyneth Paltrow and Aidy Bryant are about as mainstream as you can really get these days. Paltrow is an Academy Award winning actress who’s known for being good at accents and has been in almost as many Marvel Cinematic Universe movies as Robert Downey Junior. She’s taken seriously as a singer, is genuinely funny and always looks comfortable doing live sketch comedy on Saturday Night Live. They even used to play her weird karaoke duet with Huey Lewis on the easy listening stations. Aidy Bryant has been on SNL for eight seasons now and has her own hit show on Hulu. She’s doing a lot of innovative work, breaking barriers and inspiring many people but she’s still been on a weekly NBC-Universal show for almost a decade. Shrill is probably too edgy for NBC but it’s still produced by Lorne Michaels and Warner Brothers. That’s what actually makes it all the more cool to see them taking micro and macro doses of psilocybin magic mushrooms and casually smoking weed in season one. It was the first time we even remembered hearing the term “microdose” or “psilocybin” on television at all. And psilocybin is the focus of the first episode of The Goop Lab on Netflix. Goop, the other thing that Gwyneth Paltrow does when she isn’t making movies or guest hosting SNL. Goop has become famous for making unsubstantiated health claims and promoting pseudoscience, sort of like Doctor Oz, except with Gwyneth Paltrow getting stung by bees on purpose, going on a lot of cleanses and only eating kale. They also sell expensive vagina scented candles and keep everyone talking about Gwyneth Paltrow.. and now Goop is a show. In the first episode of the series, they explore the topic of psychedelic hallucinogens as a medicinal psychotherapy aid. It’s an interesting concept and they investigate the subject by going to Jamaica and tripping together with some spiritual/clinical “experts” who guide them on their journey. It sounds more intriguing than it is to watch. Each person goes into an emotional rabbit hole facing

past traumas and they all sort of discuss things in what seems like a “Dianetics” style of way while their therapists remind the viewing audience that it’s bad to get hallucinogens on the street and take them at parties. It was actually more interesting watching Gwyneth Paltrow not remember she was in Spider-Man while she was on Jon Favreau’s cooking show making vegetarian stew. Part of the problem might be that the Goop staff isn’t as fun to watch as their boss. Listening to Paltrow mention she took MDMA in Mexico once is as entertaining as watching the rest of the staff doing shrooms in Jamaica. That’s indicative of something pretty specific. Not totally sure if I’ll be checking out more episodes of The Goop Lab or not. Speaking of fun to watch, “Shrill” is back for a second season on Hulu and this time they do dabs. “Broad City” mentioned dabbing once but it never showed them doing any onscreen. Shrill goes there in the fourth episode, “Freak”, when Fran visits a dispensary while on a date with herself and later sings a karaoke cover of “Shallow” from A Star is Born after she wanders into a bar eating a burrito. Fran was the character who initially took mushrooms last season and now she’s dabbing. The budtender uses a butane torch and glass piece and Fran makes a crack smoking joke in what is a very believable scene. Some of the viewing audience might have no idea what she's supposed to be doing. Coincidentally, Aidy Bryant’s character Annie goes to a very “Goop-like” conference called WAHAM, “Women are Having a Moment”. The leader of WAHAM is hilariously played by Vanessa Bayer. Goop kind of seems like "Vice" but for yoga moms. Shrill also has a character vaping from an oversized modular battery and I'm pretty sure it's another first. So Goop and Shrill, for better or worse, are both mainstreaming some pretty far out stuff, just with varying degrees of self awareness. We'll see what this leads to.

National Cannabis Industry Association And Safe Vaping Task Force Report Zeroes In On Illicit Markets Wednesday Jones

Edibles Magazine Issue 61

At the end of January, the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) released a report linking illicit markets to the current vaping health scare that has led upwards of 2,700 being hospitalized for lung illnesses and 60 deaths related to using a vape device in the last year.

38

In the report, (that included recommendations from over 30 industry professionals as part of NCIA’s Policy Council and Safe Vaping Task Force), NCIA states many things need to improve before legal, licensed, cannabis companies can beat out companies illegally pushing harmful and potentially fatal products. NCIA

executive director Aaron Smith told Marijuana Business Daily, “The root of this problem is that the illicit market has yet to be replaced by the legal market.” The report goes on to state in California, illegal retailers outnumber licensed and regulated marijuana businesses by a ratio of approximately 3-to-1.3. “In addition to unregulated additives like vitamin E acetate, pesticides and heavy metals have been found in dangerously high amounts in illicit market products,” and “important for manufacturers to do their due diligence, invest in research and source suitable materials for their products.”

Target areas include: Lowering financial burdens for licensed companies – in particular, reducing taxes on legal marijuana products. Implementing methods counterfeit products.

Making it easier for unlicensed companies to enter the legal market. Smith goes on to urge cannabis business owners work harder to “educate regulators about the difficulties of doing business in states such as California with heavy regulatory burdens and high taxes, which leads to inflated prices and drives consumers to seek out cheaper products on the illicit market,” and “executives from marijuana companies and their staffs also might help to educate consumers about the safety of licensed products as well as the benefits of shopping at legal stores – such as product safety,” with the report itself stating “is important for manufacturers to do their due diligence, invest in research and source suitable materials for their products.”

And with that, I urge YOU to only buy from legal, licensed stores and DO NOT be afraid to ask your dispensary’s budtender as many questions as you need about what products they carry and their qualities. If they’re worth their salt, they’ll have no problems giving you the advice you need.

Smith also said that a lot of marijuana products are not regulated or minimally regulated at the federal level and “in the absence of (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulation, it’s incumbent upon industry actors to ensure they’re utilizing material that’s considered safe for consumption.”

However, even while vendors are left hurting it appears Bierman is coming out on top and still making money.

MedMen has caused a lot of damage to cannabis producers. It doesn’t matter if they didn’t get paid, the cities and state still want their tax money. Negotiating pennies on the dollar hardly seems worth it for vendors. Americans are also restricted to cashing out Canadian Securities Exchange shares, so accepting public shares is also useless. Another concern for the Weed Czar is with the growing industry and availability of different types of cannabis products is keeping them out of the hands of children and teens. Birenbaum says that there is a difference between legalization and commercialization. “We are not looking to have a commercialized industry that is trying to create more consumers. We’re trying to take the current use… and ensure that these products are not marketed toward or distributed toward the most vulnerable members of our communities, particularly children.” Birenbaum sites past success with youth usage rates in other regulated industries like alcohol and tobacco products. He acknowledges that there is not enough data specific to the cannabis industry and says that it is “something we need.” One of the benefits of the regulation of the types of products being handled by the Office of Cannabis Management is that it can keep up with the changes in technology and the public’s health and safety needs. States are updating regulations every 8-12 months, “the need to revisit legislature and change statutes with every industry shift is time consuming… and doing a disservice to consumers” if regulations and consumer protections are out of date according to the Czar. Birenbaum feels that his office needs to be flexible to move with the needs of licensees and small businesses.

The current proposal for New York has different tiers similar to the one already in place: producers, wholesalers, and retailers. This three tier system helps ensure that a single group of well financed individuals cannot control or manipulate the market. By breaking up the different license functions the Office of Cannabis Management can help ensure a “level playing field” for all businesses. To go even further, Birenbaum says that his office has identified areas where they want to make sure applications, licenses, and geographic locations that satisfy the requirements for social and economic empowerment applications are given first access. Individuals who satisfy the requirements will be given priority applications, reviews, license approval, have access to zero or low interest loans, incubation programs, peer-to-peer mentorship, and workforce development and training to help achieve success in the cannabis industry. The Weed Czar is planning to coordinate with the neighboring states who are also working on Cannabis legislature to help keep consumers from crossing into other jurisdiction, which are geographically close to one another. “We’ve been working together to make sure that there are similar provisions for public health and safety to regulate product forms, advertising, marketing and also tax structures… We are so densely populated, we need to make sure that we’re doing this together.” Issue 61 I Page 44

Integral Dena, LLC Will Be The Second Dispensary To Open In Pasadena Crix Lee

The approval came with a handful of drama, ranging from the company illegally currying favor with council members, including Integral Dena, LLC donating $8,800 to Councilman John Kennedy’s holiday party back in 2018 but it was determined that he was not required to recuse himself from the vote as “charitable payments made to a third-party at an official’s request, otherwise known as “behested payments,” do not amount to a financial conflict of interest,” and Integral reps meeting with “multiple members of City Council and City staff members.

After an hour, all arguments on the matter were quickly negated by Mayor Terry Tornek, who said “We can keep going around and around on this, and you’re not buying it. This is an unusual situation. We have a single building in a split-zone.” When the vote was called, two members recusing themselves: the aforementioned Hampton, stating “The facts aren’t clear enough for me,” and Councilman Steve Madison, a partner with the law firm Quinn Emanuel (who represent cannabis company MedMen, one of six companies competing for approval to sell in Pasadena), who followed the advice of the City Attorney’s Office. Before Integral Dena, LLC can pop the champagne, they still have four more permits to get before they can open, with City officials being made aware there could be a plethora of lawsuits and appeals from both sides. And despite it all, Integral founder Armen Yemenidjian is ready to fight. “It’s my job to be nervous. If I wasn’t nervous, maybe I wouldn’t be the right fit for the city. But being nervous makes me want to be great and do everything properly, and that’s all I strive to do.”

A continued and heated debate over property lines from anticannabis proponent councilman Tyron Hampton, cannabis company SweetFlower Pasadena (in direct contention with Integral Dena, LLC over said permit), and consultant Martin Truitt, all argued the projected storefront location (169 W. Colorado Blvd) violates the “No retailer shall be established or located within 600 fee, measured from the nearest property lines of I have a feeling this won’t be the each of the affected parcels, of any last we hear about this. After being denied by the City of Pasadena’s Planning Commission and subsequent appeal to the City Council in 2019, Integral Dena, LLC was approved as the city’s second retail cannabis storefront last Monday in a 5-0 vote, making them the second dispensary permitted to open within the city.
