Springing back to life

More than two years after the Covid-19 pandemic shut down Davao City, things are starting to grind back to normal.

Face-to-face classes have returned, traffic is back, people have trooped to the malls and Davao City is springing back into its usual Davao City ways.

With that comes the phase of recovery bolstered by the construction sector roaring again.

With growing optimism that 2023 is a good year for the economy and the markets, Davao companies are determined to reverse the tide.

A case in point is Damosa Land, Inc. (DLI) which is accelerating its projects in the Davao Region and some parts of Mindanao this year.

In a recent interview, DLI president Ricardo F. Lagdameo announced ongoing projects in Samal, several in Panabo City, and in Davao City.

“A lot of these projects are slightly delayed due to the pandemic but now we are very confident, we are moving forward, and we are launching them simultaneously while completing the other projects. Medyo busy ang new year natin,” he said.

DLI is also eyeing to launch a new subdivision project in

Catalunan Grande, Davao City by the second or third quarter of this year.

DLI is currently developing Bridgeport with low-density residential buildings, prime open lots, residential, commercial, and dining, and an exclusive marina.

Another homegrown firm bullish to revive its growth is developer Aeon Luxe Properties Incorporated (ALPI) which came back stronger after the pandemic.

In December last year, ALPI officially broke ground for its newest project in Davao City, the Aeon Bleu, along Dizon Road in Bacaca.

The project couched in a 1.6-hectare property is a six-tower mixed-use development, which will comprise of two residential towers, one condotel, one corporate tower, Club Aeon, and one future development. The tallest of the buildings will be up to 26 stories.

“It’s been a long road but now we are finally here. Following the success of Aeon Towers, our revolutionary concept for urban reimagination, the Aeon Bleu, will soon be on display in the Davao Metro,” said Ian Y. Cruz, president, and CEO of FTC Group of Companies Corporation.

With the reopening of the economy, traffic congestion has also been experienced in the urban areas. Like it or not, the massive traffic jam during morning and evening rush hours are back and even worsened in Davao City.

Yet, the public felt a flicker of relief when the Department of Public Works and Highways 11 (DPWH 11), announced that the Bago Aplaya to Tulip Drive segment of the Davao Coastal Bypass Road is expected to be opened to motorists in April or May this year.

“Within the second quarter of this year maybe early April or May pinakadugay na, ablihan na nato ang gikan sa Bago Aplaya padulong sa Tulip Drive junction sa coastal road,” Dean Ortiz, DPWH 11 spokesperson, said.

Current undertakings in the coastal road include the completion of the Sta. Ana Wharf bridge, pavement coming from Sta. Ana Wharf going to Bucana and the access roads from Boulevard.

The construction of the 18-kilometer coastal road started in 2017. It stretches from the Toril district in the southwestern part of Davao City to R. Castillo Street area.

The coastal road is intended to provide an alternative route

to the Pan-Philippine Highway in the southern part of the city, which has been experiencing heavy traffic congestion.

Vaccination drive

The city’s vaccination cluster, tasked with the vaccination drives in public areas, has been dissolved, and the inoculation against the Covid-19 virus will now be solely available in the district’s health centers.

Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, the head of the Davao City Covid-19 Vaccination Program, said mobile vaccinations and vaccination hubs in malls had ceased operations, transferring the immunization campaign to the city’s 18 district health centers.

“Though the city’s vaccination cluster is now dissolved, this does not mean the vaccination campaign will cease, especially since the vaccine has effectively reinforced the population’s immune system against the virus,” Villafuerte said in a radio interview.

Vaccination, she said, will now be available every Friday in all district health centers.

“Since Davao City has already reached a 100 percent vaccination rate and has only a little work left to do in terms of administering booster shots

to the pediatric demographic, dissolving the vaccination cluster is only pragmatic,” she said.

Top business-friendly city

The city government of Davao and power provider Aboitiz Group inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) early this year aiming to make Davao City the most business-friendly city in Mindanao.

Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, together with Anton Perdices, senior vice president and chief operating officer (COO) of the AboitizPower Distribution Unit and Rodger Velasco, president and chief operating officer (COO) of the Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), led the signing of the MOA in streamlining business processes under the Project Bilis Davao through digitalization of the issuance of building and business permits, tax mapping, and the use of online payment channels.

Perdices, who represented the business units of the Aboitiz in Davao City, said this aims to promote ease of doing business with the city and to attract more investors, encourage new businesses, and promote economic

A fitting recognition for Davao’s media icon

Davao’s late media icon Antonio Movera Ajero will be joining the elite list of Datu Bago awardees.

Almost a year after his passing in July last year, AMA will be enshrined posthumously to the Datu Bago Awards, the highest recognition conferred to an individual by the city government of Davao.

It might be long overdue, but this one is fitting. And knowing his humility, AMA will take it anytime, any which way up in the skies.

There is one record Ajero holds that will never be broken in the annals of Davao’s media industry. He holds the distinction of being the only journalist to serve as Editor In Chief of five major daily newspapers in Davao City -Mindanao Times, Mindanao Daily Mirror, Peryodiko Dabaw, Sunstar Davao and Edge Davao.

Yes, that record will exist forever as other publications have folded up.

The Datu Bago Awards is conferred to Dabawenyos who have contributed to the city’s growth and development. Davao City First District Councilor Temujin Tek Ocampo authored a resolution last year seeking to bestow the posthumous Datu Bago Award to Ajero who was one of the leading figures in the media profession in Davao City for many decades.

Also conferred with the prestigious homor are Brenda Sofronia Z. Barba in the field of Visual Arts and Elenita C. Dumlao, a multi-awarded visual and performing artist and currently the artistic director of Kathara Dance-Theater Collective is also one of the three awardees.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte will confer the awards on March 8 at a ceremony

that will be held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel as one of the highlights of the 86th Araw ng Dabaw celebrations.

Ajero, who goes by the monikers Daddy Cool, Tatay Tony, Nong Tony, Don Antonio or simply by his initials AMA, will be remembered by every member of the Davao media community as the eminent Dean of Davao Journalism.

The late Edge Davao editor in chief gets along with everyone. From the veterans to the newbies. He doesn’t discriminate. He doesn’t even let the fences of competition be a barrier to the Davao media community. He loves the word “seamless” hence the slogan of Edge Davao “Serving a Seamless Society.”

While he is the master of the jargons from journalism’s old schools, he updates himself with the latest lexicons of millennials and even the informal streets-tuguese.

In the newsroom, AMA is an exacting perfectionist. He wants to have the last look. Even when illness slowed him down, he would still be making his ‘presence’ in the newsroom chatter. He still demands he will have the last look.

As an editor, AMA is one who would stand up for his reporters. With all the risks and the dilemmas that come with the territory, AMA would make sure everyone is covered.

“Libel is costly–time-wise and financewise,” he will remind us to try to avoid it and make sure the facts are correct and verified.

Part of being remembered, he reminds everyone, is ensuring you will be remembered in a good way.

And AMA will forever be remembered and treasured in a very good way.

86th AND opens with a bang

Davao City celebrates its charter anniversary in quite non-traditional ways by showcasing the rich foundation of togetherness and dynamism of its people.

In essence, that’s what the 86th Araw ng Davao is all about.

This year’s celebration kicked off on March 1 with a festive opening and venue Rizal Park was bursting with energy as Dabawenyos showed up massively in the activity that was highlighted by performances and the parade of Dabawenya beauties.

What makes the opening more significant? It was attended by the pillars of the city and noted officials namely Mayor Sebastian “Baste”

Duterte, Vice Mayor J Melchor Quitain Jr., city councilors, department heads, and employees of the City Government of Davao, Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo, Secretary Leo Magno, Chinese Consul General Lin Li, and Madam Aiping Chiu, the safety and security forces, and most specially the Dabawenyos.

The mayor spoke with pleasure and encouraged Dabawenyos to celebrate 86 years of history and tradition as well as introduced the culture of peace and security here through a month-long celebration.

“This year we are excited to bring back festivities that we have grown to love and enjoy as well F86TH AND, P15

Upscale living redefined

It’s not surprising that Aeon Bleu will follow the trail of success of its predecessor Aeon Towers.

For one, it is another brilliant work of genius from real estate mogul Ian Y. Cruz, president and CEO of Aeon Luxe Properties Inc.

When Ian introduced Aeon Towers when it broke ground nearly ten years ago,

many thought it was too good to be true. Today, the 33-level residential and commercial skyscraper stands as magnificent as the Mt. Apo, lending its architectural virtuosity to Davao City’s transforming landscape.

And now, Aeon Bleu.

If Aeon Towers made its mark as the most iconic and tallest building in Mindan-

ao, Aeon Bleu is out to plant itself as a multi-tower masterpiece within the confines of Davao’s idyllic rolling real estate that’s home to the famous Dizon Farms.

Cruz himself pinches himself with the thought this project is borne out of one dream after another.

“Be careful what you wished for. You might get it,”

Cruz said recalling his speech when he shoveled the earth in May 2013 for his first signature project Aeon Towers.

“I dreamed for Aeon Towers to manifest and it did at the expense of a few gray hairs on my head. Nonetheless, I couldn’t be happier that we are finally fulfilling yet another wish, the Aeon Bleu,” Cruz said.

With Aeon Bleu, ALPI defines this development as “upscale living redefined.”

Once completed, it will be a showcase of upscale lifestyle like smart home features, sixthemed pool, fitness gym,

basketball court, entertainment area and workspaces to begin with. The possibilities are boundless.

The project is a six-tower mixed-use development as tall as 26 stories, which will be comprised of two residential towers, a condotel, a corporate tower, exclusive club, and another future development.

The pathway to its completion are outlined per phase.

Phase 1 construction has started and will comprise residential towers 1 and 2, FUPSCALE,

What Dabawenyos think of life after the pandemic

I regularly visit Davao City from my hometown in Bansalan, Davao del Sur every weekend or when I attend meetings or buy something important. But these customary occasions changed when the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 hit the country.

I stopped going to Davao City. Just like ordinary people, I was afraid of getting infected with the dreaded virus. (Unfortunately, I became a COVID-19 patient not once but twice.)

During those years of confinement – as most people were confined in their homes – we practiced the recommended health protocols: wearing face mask and face shield, washing our hands with alcohol and/or soap with water, and physical distancing.

In the later part of 2021, when most of the people were already vaccinated, Davao City started to open its door to visitors. Quarantine cards were no longer required. Some people stopped wearing face masks – although most still wear face masks when they are inside restricted places like malls, offices, and vehicles.

Last year, after two years of absence, the multi-colored and lavished Kadayawan sa Dabaw was staged back in the streets. The economy started to recover. People went out again. Physical distancing was no longer observed. Traffic was again the norm.

EDGE Davao asked several people regarding the good and bad things that happened to Davao City after the pandemic. What are they looking forward to as the pandemic, it seems, is over now. Here are their thoughts:

RIZA P. LOBITOS, teacher:

“After the pandemic, the people are becoming more health conscious, spending more time with their loved ones, and preferring nature rather than malls. Many roads were repaired during the pandemic but still traffic in the downtown area sucks.

“With the pandemic seems to be over, I am hoping that many will be re-employed, find jobs, and the economy will become better. I also hope that people continue to give importance to their health and loved ones.”

KYRST KELVIN CARAQUEL, architect: “One of the good things that happened to Davao City was that people became more cautious in dealing with health issues. Though wearing a face mask has been lifted and become optional, it has already become part of our new normal lifestyle. It is a way of protecting ourselves from any diseases like COVID-19.

I remember that some mocked us for wearing a face mask because we were copying the fashion style of Korean people.

“Another good thing that happened is that people became resilient to the changes around them. When schools no longer conduct face-to-face classes, they resorted to online/virtual classes. When business shut down, people lost their jobs and their sources of income. That is when online selling became popular. The pandemic did not hinder the people of Davao from moving forward.

“On the other hand, the negative effect of the pandemic caused trauma to most people because some of us lost our loved ones due to the disease. The online classes faced different challenges. Mental health issues skyrocketed. We found out,

too, that our healthcare services were not well-equipped. Also, as we transition back to face-toface classes, business re-opening, and other opportunities that give people the freedom to do anything, the government somehow disregards other problems that are being brought by these transitions.

“I’m looking forward to the healthcare services being equipped during another – God forbids! – global epidemic. Our government will improve its contingency plans, especially on state emergencies.”

JAMES DELFINADO, student: “Dabawenyos have become more disciplined. They become aware of the importance of health and safety precautions against viruses and bacteria.”

ELIZABETH C. TORIO, government employee: “Infrastructure and transportation should be given emphasis as this will have a big impact in bringing back the economy of Davao City to its feet again. On the good side,

the city became popular because of the China and Philippines bilateral agreement for durian exportation. This will generate more jobs because of the government’s plan in expanding the areas to be planted to durian.

“Looking at the general perspective since the pandemic seems to be over now, people should understand and appreciate that it means to live and not just to survive. Each of us should be patient and we should think and be fully aware that we need other people. As the saying goes, ‘No man is an island.’”

ALEXI FERNANDEZ, private employee: “I have seen people on how they cope up with the things they have lost during the pandemic. Whether they are medical doctors, airline pilots, engineers, teachers, businessmen, nurses and politicians, they are struggling. I am looking forward to them continuing to establish their careers and be employed again. I hope that everyone now can totally be free as the pan-

demic has ended.”

ALLAN AMPOLOQUIO, private employee: “It’s almost back to normal in Davao City as the pandemic is officially over and back to normal now. Once again, Dabawenyos have to face and endure the dreaded Davao City traffic and the floods in the city streets. Every now and then, Bunawan and Davao Rivers overflow as a result of climate change.”

ALEX CARPIO, medical doctor: “The bad thing that comes to mind is traffic. Also, a lot of business closures. Good: online proficiencies of people and businesses.”

EDWALDO LEGASPINA, corporate lawyer: “Small and medium businesses were forced to close down since their clients also lost the capacity to pay thereby rendering their operations to continue at a loss. Hopefully, with the opening of establishments and by the government’s support, businesses will be able to slowly resume.”

Davao City’s ‘sisters’

What do Bacoor City in Cavite, Nanning City in China, and County of Kaua’i, Hawaii in the USA have in common?

They are all sister cities of Davao City.

What makes for sister cities?

Like partnerships, it takes two to tango.

When two communities from different cities or countries come together to forge a cordial and meaningful relationship, a Sister City agreement is formally established. People, ideas, culture, education, and technology are exchanged between the two cities.

Sister Cities is an initiative started by Dwight D. Eisenhower shortly after World War II. Its purpose is to develop economic, cultural and technological exchanges between cities, counties and states of the United States with similar communities around the world.

Based on the data from the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center (DCIPC), Davao City has sister cities from the Phil-

ippines, from other Asian countries, and from the United States. These sister city agreements promote solidarity and cooperation, which is an essential part of mutual growth and development.

In the Philippines, Davao City has sisterhood agreements with Angeles City in Pampanga; San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan; Municipality of Liloan in Cebu; San Juan City, Quezon City, Marikina City in Metro Manila; Municipality of Basud in Camarines Norte, Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte, and Bacoor City in Cavite.

For Asian countries, Davao City is bonded with Nanning City, Jinjiang City and municipality of Chongqing in China; Kitakyushu City in Japan and Bitung City and Manado City of North Sulawesi in Indonesia.

In United States, the city’s twin sisters are Tacoma in Washington and County of Kaua’i in Hawaii.

They are like siblings of Davao City in terms of educational exchanges, cultural

events, business partnerships, and support in times of need.

Take for example Nanning and Jinjiang cities of China. In the height of Covid-19 pandemic, Nanning Municipal People’s Government donated face masks to Davao City while Jinjiang Municipal People’s Government, Fil-Chinese Multi-sectoral Association, and PanPan Groups donated boxes of medical supplies.

Consul General Li Lin of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Davao said the sisterhood between Davao City and China’s Nanning, Jinjiang, and Chongqing were signed by former mayor Rodrigo Duterte, former mayor Sara Duterte, and Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte respectively.

He said Jinjiang is one of the most economically dynamic cities in Fujian Province, the ancestral hometown of the 90 percent of the Filipino-Chinese in Davao and in the Philippines including Dr. Jose Rizal.

He added that Jinjiang

has already taken the lead by sending big delegation during the Araw ng Davao and signed a series of Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with Davao, including the resumption of Jinjiang-Davao direct flights.

“All the three sister cities are highly industrialized with convenient infrastructure. They have the plan to continue enhancing friendly exchanges and practical cooperation with Davao City,” Lin said.

Vice Mayor J. Melchor Quitain Jr. said sister city agreements are opportunities to form alliances and joint ventures which will be good for the business and tourism sectors of Davao City.

“We should take advantage of sister city relationships with other cities in our country and abroad for there are many lessons to be learned and opportunities to take advantage of in many key aspects. Sister City agreements are important because it allows and makes possible the exchange of

ideas, some of which we can adopt to address whatever existing challenges we face in our city,” he said.

He also mentioned that with sisterhood agreements, there will be sharing of best practices most specially in the aspect of government service.

Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, chair of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification, said sister city agreements can help bolster the city’s tourism, arts and culture sectors.

“Ang isa sa atoang benefits ana is we can explore and benchmark their best practices in their respective areas. Si Nanning naghatag sa atoa ug buses and they can also help us sa city government of Davao and also Jinjiang naay mga firetrucks and buses also. Dako kaayo ni ug help in terms of those aspects sa atong mga sister city agreements and there is a constant communication. Sa atoang plans kauban nato ang atoang mga sister cities to do business here,” he said.

Lifting the ‘Down’

Persons with Down syndrome may be different from the majority but they are definitely equally valuable.

An old notion associated with persons with Down syndrome that they struggle learning and could not be employed is wholly unfounded.

Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are small “packages” of genes in the body. They determine how a baby’s body forms and functions as it grows during pregnancy and after birth. Typically, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes. Babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes, chromosome 21. A medical term for having an extra copy of a chromosome is ‘trisomy.’ Down syndrome is also referred to as Trisomy 21. This extra copy changes how the baby’s body and brain develop, which can cause both mental and physical challenges for the baby.

Even though people with Down syndrome might act and look similar, each person has different abilities. People with Down syndrome usually have an IQ (a measure of intelligence) in the mildly-to-moderately low range and are slower to speak than other children.

Persons with Down syn-

drome can actually be taught and perform well along with peers.

Thanks to the people and organizations that give them a chance to show their skills.

Several companies have broke society’s old standing stereotype to train persons with Down syndrome as they fully understand that these individuals are not only employable but could also become wonderful assets to a workplace.

Don Antonio O. Floirendo, Sr. (AOF) Foundation, the CSR arm of the ANFLO Group of Companies, has opened its doors to persons with Down syndrome by giving them a chance to work as interns at some of Anflocor’s sister companies.

In partnership with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines Inc.- Davao (DSAPI-Davao), Anflocor’s AOF Foundation created a program named “Work Exposure for People with Down Syndrome”, which welcomes interns with down syndrome and exposed them to the office set up.

Currently, there are 13 interns with Down syndrome, wherein nine are working as interns at Anflocor and the others at its sister companies. And they are receiving honorarium for their service.

“This is a good exposure for them. Niagi ni sila ug screening

pero dili ingon ana ka istrikto before namo gidawat. Gina-handle namo sila with care,” said Jheanne Lee S. Juyo, Human Resource and Management Development manager for Anflocor.

These individuals embody the saying “angels in the workplace” as they are making the workplace’s environment extraordinary.

“Meron tayong tinatawag na “angels in the workplace” kasi sometimes pupunta ka ng office, stress ka, may kinikimkim kang problema, meron kang makikitang bata na nagbibigay sa iyo ng saya,” said Norman L. Clemente, executive director for AOF Foundation.

Raihanah Acedo, corporate communications and creative services senior supervisor of Anflocor, described them as friendly, courteous, and shy but sociable.

Lanie P. Vergara, assistant coordinator for DSAPI-Davao, said because of the exposure at Anflocor, some of these interns learned how to mingle.

“After niya diri (Anflocor), uli siya sa ilang balay bantay sa ilahang tindahan, murag continuity sa ilahang natun-an dinhi sa Anflocor. Na busy sila tungod sa exposure. Maka-happy kay tungod sa Anflocor, ang community as a whole, kay makita sa ilahang ID, muFLIFTING, P19

Happy 86th Araw ng Dabaw to all Dabawenyos!

As part of the Davao Region, we Matinians celebrate with you this momentous occasion of oneness of your multi cultural city.

Like our very own Sambuokan Festival, Davao City and the City of Mati take pride in its people, cultures and traditions, and harmonious relationship with one another.

This 86th Araw ng Dabaw celebration is distinct among the past celebrations as this is the first celebration after the creation of the Metropolitan Davao Development Authority (MDDA) which was signed into law by our very own then President Rodrigo Roa Duterte last April 13, 2022.

Being part of the MDDA with Davao City as its premier city, the City of Mati has always looked up to Davao City as family.

Thus as you celebrate your 86th Araw ng Dabaw, the people of Mati is one with you. We hope that your celebration this year would be safe and memorable.

There are many more happenings that Dabawenyos and visitors should look forward to such as the Araw ng Dabaw Music and Arts Festival at the Davao Coastal Road in Bago Aplaya on March 4; the conferment of Datu Bago Awards at The Royal Mandaya Hotel on March 8; Araw ng Dabaw Cheerdance Competition at the Davao City Recreational Center on March 11; Araw ng Dabaw Sayaw Pinoy Folkdance Competition at SM City Davao on March 12; Reyna Dabawenya coronation night at the RMC Petro Gazz Arena on March 15; Mutya ng Dabaw coronation night at the USEP

growth.

“The rise of the digital age has transformed us all.

It created a necessity for people of all ages to adapt and innovate digitally. It has since created the need for a more flexible way of doing things, including the integration of online processes in our day-to-day business,” Perdices said.

Highly-urbanized city vision Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II expressed support to the vision of his father, Representative Paolo Duterte of the First District of Davao City and his uncle, Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, to make Davao City a highly urbanized city with what he considers as a major reason attributed to the city’s rapid growth.

“Kaning mga developments karon like high rise buildings kini isa ni sa mga indications na ang Davao City padulong na nga mahimong highly urbanized city,” Rigo said.

He said this can bring many opportunities for growth and poverty reduction as well as generate job opportunities, educational opportunities, and better living conditions among Dabawenyos.

Among the sectors that generate employment is real estate, although, significantly hit by the pandemic resiliently walked on the path to recovery.

Metropolitan Davao Development Authority

Davao City is optimistic the Metropolitan Davao Development Authority (MDDA) will soon go full throttle.

Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte has called for the immediate implementation of Republic Act (RA) No.11708 or the MDDA law which created the MDDA.

Duterte was referring to Republic Act (RA) No.11708 or the MDDA law.

“We should not delay anymore the implementation of the law creating the MDDA. Metro Davao is seven times the size of Metro Manila and even bigger than the land area of Singapore. The MDDA is necessary so that the development plans of the cities and municipalities comprising Metro Davao will move in a synchronized path that is beneficial to all,” Duterte said in a statement.

Duterte considers the development of Metro Davao, which serves as the economic and administrative core of the Davao Region and the entire Mindanao, requires a unified approach to lessen, or even nip in the bud, the problems that plague fragmented urban communities.

The cities of Davao, Panabo, Tagum, Island Garden in Samal, Digos, and Mati, as well as the municipalities of Sta. Cruz, Hagonoy, Padada, Malalag, Sulop, Carmen, Maco, Malita, and Sta. Maria in the Davao Region will comprise the MDDA, as per RA No.11708. (With reports from PNA)

LUCKY SQUAD

Apo Orogold finishes 3rd in PAL Men’s Interclub

Barely making it to the regular tournament after waiting for a month in the waiting list, Apo Golf team B or Apo Golf Oro gold team made the most of the chance given to them by copping third place in the Friendship Division and the distinction of being the only Davao City team to finish at the podium during the 74th PAL Interclub golf tournament in Cebu.

Alta Vista team is already the runaway winner in the division but the battle for the second and third place was hotly contested and was decided only on the final hole at the 18th green of Club Filipino. Apo team B’s final day surge of 73 points for final total of 298 was not enough to overhaul the 5 point overnight lead established by the Liloan Golf team whose final day output of 69 was good enough to cop 2nd place for their final tally of 299 points.

“Bakbakan talaga until the last hole,” said Team captain mark Oropeza whose 22 points and Paul Garcia’s 23 carried most of the load on the final day. The other members who slugged it out on the final day were Cocoy Junsay (17), Andy Ugdoracion (11) and Mayo Pillerin whose 9 points

did not count.

Apo Golf team B stayed on the radar most of the time during the tournament, holding on to the second position for the first two days, had a collapse on the third day and bounced back on the final day in Club Filipino to take the third place honors.

The other member of the team are top scorer Larry Baluso (27,28), Reggie Capa, Verne dela Cruz, Carlo Senase and Stephen Alegre.

The rest of the Davao City teams and their standings after the final day are as follows: Apo Golf team A 11th place (Founders), Rancho Palos Verdes 6th place (Aviators); Davao City Golf 4th Place, South Pacific Golf 8th Place and Lanang Golf 15th Place (Sportswriters Division).

MOSES BILLACURA CLEAN SLATE

The 75-year-old Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) will hold its San Miguel Corporation-PSA Annual Awards Night on March 6 at the Diamond Hotel.

The Diamond Hotel is manong Ferdie “Batman’ Lintuan’s fave hotel every time Davao sportswriters travel to Manila for a sports coverage. By the way, manong Ferdie was the first president of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) established in 1994 and affiliated with the PSA, then headed by Inquirer sports editor Manolo “Doc” Inigo. Manong Gus Villanueva represented Mr. Inigo to the first DSA Induction of Officers that year at the Insular Hotel Davao.

So, this coming Monday, the organization will honor former editors Recah Trinidad, Ding Marcelo, Jun Engracia, Al S. Mendoza, Eddie Alinea and Percy Della with Lifetime Award in Sports Journalism.

SPORTS JOURNALISM AWARDS AT THE SMC-PSA NIGHT

Special awards will also be given to the late sports editors Joe S. Antonio, my former boss at the People’s Journal, and Ernie Gonzales.

Going through the list of awardees brings back great memories.

For many years, we have followed their work by reading their columns and sports stories published by the national papers. And thanks to the Philippine Airlines (PAL) for holding the Interclub Golf Tournaments, we had the chance to meet some of them.

Sir Joe Antonio, when I visited the Journal Group of Publications office years ago with my papang Marcial, mamang Loleng and aunties Tess and Grace, showered me with Journal t-shirts, hahaha, and was apologetic with space constraints because the PJ was a tabloid-size national paper, unlike its sister publication which is a broad-

sheet.

Mr. Al S. Mendoza, on the other hand, has been the most amiable among the sports editors to sportswriters from the community papers, no offense meant to other sports editors in Manila. I could not forget him because he received a memo when he was still sports editor of the Inquirer for not following the dress code at the PDI HQ, hahahaha. And as a young sportswriter then, he offered Stolichnaya to me and realizing that I could not handle it, he ordered the waiter to bring San Miguel Beer while we continued the drinking session, hahahaha. Great memories, migo Chito Malabanan, right?

The other sports editors, being our sports fraternity elders, we respectfully greet and chat with them during the PAL Interclub golf coverages.

It is good to know that they will be honored this year and they all deserve it as sports chroniclers in this country. To be a sportswriter is not just a job, my friends. If you don’t love it, it is going to drive you crazy. You see my friends, sportswriting is the preservation of sports history that will serve as the basis for making wise decisions in sports management and sports development by our future generation of sports leaders and writers.

That is why I always encourage our sports community members to keep in touch with the sports media and not be afraid to get close with them because you have nothing to hide from them anyway. It becomes an easy job for sports editors and writers if information is readily provided to them. And that is what the PSA and DSA as organizations are doing by holding

the weekly Forum as a public service program.

Should sportswriters unearth some controversial stuff in the sports community, it is easy to clear things out because you have a direct line of communication to them. And through their news outlets, the public will know the truth. And that is the beauty of democracy in the country, no matter how crazy the sports community can be, sometimes.

Kudos to PSA president Rey Lachica of Tempo/Bulletin and to the rest of the officers for continually working in honoring our sports idols in the country.

Congratulations to the awardees!

She said it is the goal of DSAPI to bridge the gap between

Towers 1 and 2 will house the residential flats of Aeon Bleu while tower 3 is a hotel-operated condotel equipped with revolutionary technology like a digital concierge, fiber optic backbone, and smart home features. Tower 4 is a corporate tower that will be available to accommodate the needs of every business. It will feature shared workspaces, private offices, and everything in between.

Club Aeon, ALPI’s exclusive club to residents, will be at tower 5 and touted as the crown jewel of the Aeon projects. It will feature a luxury lobby, basketball court, fitness facility, children’s playroom, and entertainment area. Moreover, Club Aeon will have a six-themed pool, the first of its kind in the Southern Philippines.

Tower 6, a premium residence, will house the most luxurious units in the futuristic skyscraper on its top floor, along with an infinity pool and large office spaces.

One and a half year in the making, the project has a master plan of six years with the completion of phase 1 targeted to finish in three years and phase 2 in another three years.

All told, Aeon Bleu will be a cluster of six towers with unparalleled amenities.
