B.H. Carroll Theological Institute and East Texas Baptist University Announce Merger

The presidents of B. H. Carroll Theological Institute in Irving and East Texas Baptist University in Marshall announced Feb. 6 that the institutions’ boards have each approved resolutions authorizing an exclusive agreement to merge the administrative and academic operations of B. H. Carroll into ETBU.

A letter of intent, signed by B. H. Carroll President Gene Wilkes and ETBU President J. Blair Blackburn, sets forth the terms and conditions of the merger, as well as the timeline for its completion.

On or before January 31, 2025, B. H. Carroll will become a new school of ETBU known as “B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary at East Texas Baptist University” and will continue to offer graduate theological education through its accredited master’s and doctoral degree programs.

West of Eden

The ETBU School of Communication and Performing Arts took the stage February 16-19 for their production of West of Eden, a pair of student-directed one-act plays.

ETBU junior Koby Hankins directed Elon Garonzik’s Scenes and Revelations, a story about four sisters at pivotal turning points in their lives navigating family, love, and death during American westward expansion.

The Diary of Adam and Eve, by Mark Bucci and based on the famous works of Mark Twain, was directed by ETBU senior Amy Hobbs. A comedic look at the creation story, the one-act play allowed the audience to experience life through the eyes and diaries of Adam and Eve.

Katie Balfe ('09)

As the Vice President of Human Resources for Twin Eagle, Katie Balfe ('09) fondly remembers her time at East Texas Baptist University. Katie now lives in the Houston area and enjoys being involved in her local church, The Woodlands First, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. As a Business Administration student, it was her Old and New Testament professor who had a lasting impact on her. Learn more about Katie and her time at ETBU in this month's Alumni Spotlight.

ETBU Hockey Claims TCHC Tournament Championship

ETBU Hockey recently claimed its first-ever Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference Tournament Championship with a 3-2 shootout victory over Texas A&M University. The Tigers moved to 20-8 on the season and 4-1 versus the Aggies. The TCHC Tournament Finals appearance was the third consecutive for ETBU with the Tigers avenging losses to Texas A&M in the previous two finals. ETBU Hockey will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for the American Collegiate Hockey Association West Regional Tournament. Learn

Quantel Williams ('18, '20)

Quantel Williams ('18, '20) received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from ETBU. Quantel was active in leadership across campus including serving as Student Government Association President and as a Resident Assistant in Residence Life. He has served in a variety of ministry capacities and now is the Director of Residence Life at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

ETBU School of Education receives full accreditation, commendations from State Board

East Texas Baptist University School of Education received full accreditation and commendations from the State Board for Educator Certification (SEBC). The School of Education is one of only 75 Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) in the State of Texas to be fully accredited. The two commendations mark the first time in school history to be recognized for its preparation of educator candidates beyond the annual performance standards. Read more.

Bethany Coyne was named Region 6 Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Texas High School Coaches Association. Coyne ('14) turned a high school injury into motivation to provide student-athletes a service that was not provided for her as a high school student. Read more.

Azusa ('20, '21) Promoted to Assistant Vice President & Accounting Officer

Community National Bank & Trust of Texas announced the promotion of Justin Azua ('20, '21) to Assistant Vice President & Accounting Officer. Justin joined the Corsicana home office as an intern in the Accounting Department before being hired full-time in 2022. Read more.
