Suspicion of arson in blaze of Lamont area home fire

Cowboy earns $6,000 payday BY MICHELLE PINON Editor

Members of the Lamont Fire Department were called to a house fire late Saturday afternoon about six kilometres northeast of the community, just off Highway 29 near Starko Road. BY MICHELLE PINON Editor

Arson is suspected, but not yet confirmed in a house fire that occurred late Saturday afternoon near Lamont. Lamont fire chief John Helton said the department received a call from Strathcona dispatch at 4:51 p.m. of a fire at a residence located six kilometres northeast of the community just off Highway 29 near Starko Road. The residence was unoccupied, and listed for sale. “The house was in foreclosure,” stated Helton. “While the fire is still being investigated; arson is suspected.” He added that different fires were ignited throughout the house. Cst. Janet Saunders of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP detachment was on scene Sunday with a sniffing dog, and accellerant was detected. Helton said it will likely take between two to three weeks before an official determination is made and official report filed. Water trucks from St. Michael and Andrew were called in, as well as members of the Chipman Fire Department. “The fire was brought under control between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.” Firefighters left the scene around 11:30 p.m.

Cowboy Ashton Arychuk hit pay dirt Saturday night in Lamont, winning more than $6,000 to capture Bull-A-Rama Supreme. The Red Deer based bull rider managed to stay atop “No Seeum” to capture the prestigious crown before a packed house at the arena. It was Arychuk’s seventh appearance in the BullA-Rama, and proved to be the charm as he held tight for eight seconds to win the title. Arychuk, was up against 29 other professional riders, who were put to the test, as the bulls were on their top game that evening. “Awesome,” was the word Arychuk used to describe his victory, shortly after joining members of the local press for interviews immediately following the event. The 25-year-old Morinville native said he has been training hard, and says you have to really dedicate yourself to be at the top of the sport. “You also have to keep going through the hard times.” Arychuk has faced many hard times during his seven year professional career, suffering a broken leg, punctured lung, and many body crushing blows. “I’ve lost a few teeth,” says the affable cowboy. Arychuk started riding when he was 10, and while visions of becoming professional were just that dreams, he never gave up on his dream. “I just didn’t realize I could do it.” Arychuk “did it” in fine style before a sell out crowd, and was his first win in this community.

Lamont residents celebrate 90th birthdays MacArthur and Saruk reach special milestone BY MICHELLE PINON Editor

April 21st was a very special day for Jessie Saruk and May MacArthur who celebrated their 90th birthdays with family and friends in Lamont. There was much excitement as many of the guests, who know both gals, went from one party to another. Saruk’s party was held at the C.E. Centre in the Lamont United Church, and MacArthur’s party was held in the social centre at Morley Young Manor. There were many smiles and laughs during the afternoon as siblings, daughters and sons, family members, relatives, and friends wished the ladies well, and congratulated them on reaching the important milestone. Guests also took a trip down memory lane as Saruk’s son Bert had put together a history of Jessie through photographs and written word. MacArthur’s daughter Karen, presented a power point presentation with some of her mom’s favourite music and photographs taken throughout the years. Also in attendance were MacArthur’s four other

She married Alec Saruk in 1947. The couple met while both were attending summer session in Edmonton. MacArthur married William Cole MacArthur in 1951. They moved to Ross Creek in 1962 and continued to live and work in the local area. William passed away in 1993, and May currently resides in Lamont. They have also left an indelible mark on the lives of loved ones, friends, neighbours, and the community. Best wishes for many more wonderful years!

Her family tree was illustrated on a quilted cushion, handcrafted by close friend Pat Taylor. Taylor, also crafted a quilt, that birthday party guests signed during the celebration. Both Saruk and MacArthur are active members of the Red Hat Society. They also share a love of the English language with Saruk partaking in crossword puzzles, and MacArthur playing Scrabble. Saruk has always loved gardening, and named her own garden, “The Mae MacArthur cuts into her beautiful birthday cake Garden of Weeding.” It which was adorned with wonderful yellow roses.

Lamont Bull-A-Rama one of the most exciting ever Sell out crowd and great band make grat mix for Ag. Society Event BY MICHELLE PINON Editor

While organizers haven't had a chance to tally up the proceeds from Bull-A-Rama Supreme XIX, they are very pleased with how everything went during the day long event held at the Lamont Recreation Centre on April 28th. Head organizer, Aaron Wick of the Lamont & District Agricultural Society said there was much to be impressed with; everything from the volunteers to the riders to the clown to the crowd and to the band. "The trade fair went phoenominal," added Aaron, and said it will be part of the event next year, and for years to come. "It was a very good draw," he added, as more than 40 venders were on hand to promote and sell their products. Bullriding is the "riskiest and toughest sport out there;" and Aaron was happy to see 30 riders in the long go as well as eight in the short go. In the end, it was Red Deer cowboy Ashton Arychuk, who took top hon-

ours at the end of the event. One thing that really impressed Aaron was rodeo clown Zak Yo-Yo, who went above and beyond. When Zak Yo-Yo aka Cody Schoepp, heard there was a young fellow that was sick and couldn't attend the Bull-A-Rama, he personally made a house call to Adam Yuke to cheer him up and put a big smile on his face. The band, "Ain't No Rodeo," was "One of the best bands we've ever hired!" Patrons kept making that comment to him, and even wanted band members to forego breaks, because they loved their music so much. "The crowd was good all around," added Aaron, and there were no fights during the festivities. The only disappointing thing, was having to turn some people away at the door for the dance, as they were at capacity. Another highlight of the evening were the presentations made to longtime volunteers, who received plaques and were awarded with lifetime memberships to the ag. society. The recipients included: Frank and Elly Cholak, Mel and Sharon Snyder, Wayne and

Darlene Schoepp, Ed and Susan board chair Kent Harrold. Iwaskow, and Grant and Delores Cossey. "They are there to help or give direction," added Aaron, and they had been doing so for several decades. Two $500 scholarships were awarded as well. Chris Semotiuk received the Dennis Stadnick Memorial Scholarship to study a technical trade, General Cat Work and Excavating while Samantha Gruber received the Bert and Agricultural and Oilfield Isabelle Doige We have equipment available for dugouts, Scholarship to attend a post secondary institubrushing, yard clean-ups, tion. landscaping, trenching, The Lamont Health basements & demolition projects. Finding the Letter to the Editor strength to Clown Zak Yo-Yo shows true speak the colours for Lamont youth plain truth Smiles all around after personal visit Courage. It is something that can be so hard to summon, yet so essential. Wrestling with matters of the conscience can be so difficult; let alone confronting issues and situations head on. My 13-year-old son is struggling to say and do the right thing right now. Trying to give the strength to carry through with what they know in their heart must be done, is such a battle; not because it’s a matter of battling with telling the truth, but how to tell the truth. Leading up to a crucial moment of truth, can be truly agonizing; yet I try to help put things into perspective by looking at the end result and what will be achieved by mustering up the courage. I think at the core of the word and thoughts of courage is fear. To overcome your fears to face whatever serious situation head on. I remember the times my parents made me “do the right thing;” and while every urge told me to run as fast as I could as far away as I could, I knew I couldn’t run and hide no matter what. Right now, my son is facing one of those sticky and scary situations, and I just hope my encouragement and advice will be enough to propel him to do the right thing. This just reminds me, that regardless of age, we all have to face tough choices and that in the end, the lessons we learn, the values it instills, and the character it builds is vital to our growth and development as human beings. So, here’s to hoping, wishing, and praying; and some moral support along the way, that he, too, will discover the way. MICHELLE PINON

Zak Yo-Yo ( AKA Cody Schoepp ) is more than just a rodeo clown to our family. Every year we attend the Bullarama here in Lamont. It is one of our favorite family events. The biggest fan has to be Adam, our son. This year was no exception. Adam was really looking forward to attending. He was going all decked out, in true cowboy form, in his new cowboy shirt, Wranglers, boots and hat. Early Saturday afternoon Adam was hit with a migraine, and ended up in bed for the rest of the day and evening. He finally woke at 9:30 pm, raring to go to his favorite event. When I told him that it was over, he was devastated. Having missed the entertainment myself, I decided to go over to the dance to say hi to the many friends we look forward to seeing every year. When I walked in the door, still feeling my sons sadness and disappointment, the first person I saw was Cody. I was compelled to walk over and talk to him.

Kerry Anderson Publisher

I told him what had happened earlier in the day, and how sad Adam was that he had to miss his favorite night of the year. At that point, I did what any loving parent

he peeked over the back of the couch and saw Zak Yo-Yo standing in his kitchen, I thought he was going to burst. The light in my son’s eyes brought tears to mine. Cody graciously

would do, I offered Cody $100 to walk across the street with me and say hi to my boy. Not only did he instantly agree, he refused to take any money for doing it. When we walked in the door, I told my son I had brought a visitor to see him. I wish everyone could have seen the look on my son’s face. When

agreed to a picture as well as giving Adam a shirt and other goodies that he throws to the crowd during the show. I would like everyone to know the kind of man Cody Schoepp is. He is kind and generous and takes his ìrole model status very seriously. He told me, I do it for the kids. That is what it’s all

Michelle Pinon Editor

about. So, when you attend an event and are thoroughly entertained by Zak Yo-Yo’s antics, just remember this story. We Love the clown, but we sure respect the man behind the costume. Special thanks to the Ag Society for, once again, putting on such an amazing event. We really appreciate all of your hard work and the many people who generously donate their time and energies to make it all happen. Without you, we would not have experienced such an amazing act of kindness. Cody Schoepp ( Zak Yo-Yo) , no words can express our gratitude to you. A small gesture can be life changing to a child, and Thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough. We want to wish you success and a lifetime of happiness. Your kindness will surely come back to you ten fold. If our son grows up to be half the man you are, we will be truly blessed. Kind Regards, Ann & Andy Yuke and of Course, your biggest fan, Adam)

Sports Volunteers take a shot in the dark with new archery program for local residents BY MICHELLE PINON Editor

Thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, youth and adults now have the opportunity to try their hand at archery. Murray Laronde, Justin Kaban, and Karl Hauch are the driving forces behind the initiative to introduce the sport to urban and rural residents. More than 20 people, both children and adults attended the first evening of instruction at Bruderheim School last Thursday night. Hauch, who is also the Mayor of Bruderheim, was excited to see so many folks at the inaugral outing. He said the town is often criticized for not offering activities for residents, and to be able to offer the sport in the community is a wonderful thing. “It’s wonderful to be able to bring the sport to Bruderheim and area. I hope more people will take advantage of the opportunity,” added Hauch. So does certified archery instructor Murray Laronde. In order to participate, Laronde says children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent, and also have a membership in either the Lamont Fish & Game Association or the Fort Saskatchewan Fish & Game Association. A yearly membership is $35, and points out that there are many other benefits available to members as a result of signing up. Laronde says archery is great fun for the entire family, and emphasizes that you don’t have to be a hunter or interested in hunting to join. Laronde says Archery is great for hand and eye co-ordination as well as patience. Laronde is so thankful that Kaban, the archery chair of the Fort Saskatchewan Fish & Game Association approached the Lamont Fish & Game Association to participate in the program. The lessons will be held every other Thursday at 7 p.m. from now until the end of the school year at Bruderheim School. The dates include: May 10th, May 24th, June 7th and June 21st. Memberships can either be purchased through Laronde or at the school during the evening lessons. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment if possible.

Lamont County’s 7th Annual Doors Open Weekend is just one month away and promises to be one of the best yet Out of many good suggestions raised at a stakeholders meeting last November the county has decided to focus on two new initiatives for 2012,” said Garret Matteotti, Manager of Economic Development & Strategic InitiativesLamont County. “The first is a pilot project. We are beginning the weekend on Friday so we can accommodate school groups who want to tour participating churches or museums. Schools will receive an invitation and details about how visiting these historic structures ties into the elementary Social Studies curriculum.” “The second change introduces the Lamont County Passport Contest and the chance to win some great prizes. Visitors are encouraged to collect stickers for

their passport from a variety of venues and attractions. This is the only county-wide initiative we have so we want all municipalities and community groups to get on board and showcase what we have to offer,” added Matteotti. Event coordinator Hazel Anaka said, “We’re so happy to have our ‘regulars’ back again this year: 28 churches; Andrew Farmers’ Market; Chipman Bike Rally & Car Crafters Show & Shine; museums in Bruderheim, Andrew and Mundare; and garage sales all across the County except M u n d a re . ” “ M u n d a re will be the site of a new food event. Kaplan has been touring Canada for three decades, performing his own brand of family friendly magic for audiences in practically every major city as well as some of this country’s remotest communities. Along the way, his Fundraising Magic program has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for community organizations. “Putting smiles on kids faces, and leaving tangible results like helping a school raise money for a playground, a youth group go on a field trip, a service club put something back into their community...well, it just doesn’t get better than that,” states Kaplan.

Charity barbecue The Friends to Fight Cancer are going to be grilling hamburger and kubbie burgers at the Lamont High School on May 3rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizer Darlene Cholak is hoping the seventh annual installment will raise more money than ever before for the Canadian Cancer Foundation which uses proceeds from the fundraiser for cancer research, prevention and treatment programs. Over the past six years, the Friends to Fight Cancer have helped raise more than $30,000. Cholak says the community and businesses in and around the Town of Lamont have been very supportive of the worthwhile fundraiser over the years, and she is very grateful for that support. She encourages folks to come with a parent, grandparent, friend, or neighbour this Thursday. “If you are able to help out with a donation or product to help offset the cost of the food for the barbecue, it would be greatly appreciated.
