New journey awaits grads of Andrew School Tracy Harding Staff Writer

June 23 was graduation day at Andrew School. The event kicked off with portraits, then a formal banquet, followed by graduation exercises, and a dance. Front row left: Kaitlin Loewen, Jenna Flasha, Jackie Ferguson, Kaylyn Palley. Middle row left: Kevin Little, Jerika Tait, Teneale Hrehorets, Tyler Ostashek. Back row left: Calvin Longpre, Jesse Lewis, Vernon Currie. Missing from the picture is Daniel Wortel.

Students of Andrew School celebrated their graduation Saturday night. With only having 13 graduates, they went "all out" on the festivities. The theme for the evening was 'Hollywood', and the students certainly looked like stars. In attendance for the event was the Mayor of Andrew Eldon Feniak, MLA Jacquie Fenske, Superintendent of Schools Bruce Beliveau and local School Board Trustee Colleen Lopushinsky, who were all amazed at the graduates and all of the hard work that had been done. The master of ceremonies was Braydon Bryks who made the evening light hearted and very enjoyable for all in attendance. Teneale Hrehorets and Tyler Ostashek toasted the parents. Shortly after, members of the graduating class presented a rose to their parents. Then all of the graduates danced to the song 'Dirt Road Anthem' before the end of the banquet. The ceremony began promptly at 7:30 p.m., and had all the graduates walking up the red carpet. Since it was such a small graduating class, principal Sharon Mclean personally paid tribute to every graduate. Assistant Principal Daniel Verhoeff spoke about each of the graduates future plans and offered advice to other students as the graduates were being called up one by one to receive their certificates. Lopushinsky, who was a graduate of Andrew High School, Fenske, Beliveau and Feniak all wished the graduates congratulations and good luck in the future. All of the special guests who offered their congratulations had the same overlying message, and that was for each of them to find career they enjoy and have a great interest in. The students picked who the guest speaker was, and they chose Cory Kokotailo, who is the coach now for Andrew School. The students and staff refer to him as Koko, and he shared a story about his growing up and graduating. Also addressing the fact that the grads will experience many changes in life, but they will lead you to where you want to be. The quotation that was displayed on the wall in silver letters stated: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with but one step," and so these 13 graduates will be taking their first step when they leave the hallowed halls of Andrew School later this week.

Lamont Library ready to launch summer program By Michelle Pinon Editor

Kids will get the opportunity to let their imaginations soar at the Lamont Public Library this summer. "Imagine is theme of the summer reading program," says librarian Krystal Kinash, who has organized various fairy tale based storytime, games, and crafts for children three years and older. The fun and adventure based program centered around some of the all time classic fairy tales will take place every Wednesday afternoon between 1 and 2 p.m. beginning July 4. Kinash says the summer reading program is always popular, averaging around 40 participants. It is a great way to promote literacy and have fun at the same time. There's also added incentive for avid book worms as they will receive a sticker for each book they read and be eligible for door prizes when the program wraps up on August 15. A few special events at the library will be the appearance of the COW Bus as well as entertainment by Magic Mike. The Alberta Prairie Classroom On Wheels (COW) Bus will be rolling into Lamont July 10th at 1 p.m. There will be movies, crafts, face painting and tattoos that afternoon adds Kinash. Magic Mike is slated to appear, and maybe disappear during a special performance on July 25. The entertainment will kick off at 1 p.m. One other special event slated for Sept. 22 will be a visit by author Michael Mucz who will be speaking about his book Babas Kitchen Medicines.

Are you a tech ‘no’ crat or tech ‘know’ crat My family went out for lunch this past weekend to a popular eatery. My husband, who is very observant, noticed a mother and two daughters sitting at a nearby table. After 15-20 minutes he commented that the mom had been texting on her phone nonstop while her daughters chatted amongst themselves. He was even more appalled when the mother kept texting after the meal was served. "Social media is anything but social," he commented. Rather than carry on a conversation face to face and engage family members, this mom chose to chat electronically rather than talk one on one with her daughters. While folks of our generation, late forty something and older, may frown upon this behaviour, members of the 30 and 20 somethings think nothing of it. It's simply become a way of life, whether they're using their IPhone, IPod, tablet, lap top, etc. Even though these technological gadgets have become "essential" devices to conduct business in our work a day world, should they override face to face communication? Although my husband firmly believes in the value of face to face communication, there are many who have opted to go the other route. But

I wonder that by going the other route, work and play, we aren't missing out on other valuable opportunities to communicate? When you are fully immersed in technology you enter your own world and shut out the outside world and the people who are within hearing distance. By blocking out the people around you, I feel you are sending a clear message that translates into don't divert my attention, don't bother me and don't interrupt me. If you do, you run the risk of being ignored, or not heard because you are trying to carry on a three way conversation. Recently I spotted an article that pointed out that while Facebook connects users with old friends, new acquaintances, and everyone in between, studies are starting to reveal an "inverse link with online connections and deeper face to face relationships." So maybe it isn't just a bunch of blarney from us "old folks" who want to connect one on one. According to the article Norwegian researchers have recently developed a test for networking sites, called the Bergen Facebook Scale, which likens inordinate amounts of time spent on the networking site to drug and alcohol abuse. The test measures how often people use the site, if they do so to forget their problems, and how using the site negatively affects

their personal and working lives. "When people abuse drugs and alcohol, they are trying to feel better, but they are worsening their situation," stated psychologist Gregory L. Jantz, author of #Hooked: The Pitfalls of Media, Technology, and Social Networking. "We're finding this is also true of for those who spend excessive amounts of time on social networking sites. Perhaps the hardest hit from social media addiction is the family unit," added Jantz. He recommended parents remember that interacting with children doesn't mean sitting in the same room with them. He suggested limiting the amount of time of television, internet, social networking sites, cell phone, video and gaming systems. Jantz also recommended parents make a list of the good and bad consequences of technology use and compare the two, as well as considering changes that will turn negatives into positives. "Increasingly, social networking infiltrates our personal lives, but we need to remember that it is created to serve us, and not the other way around," stated Jantz. I say, here here, and put those gadets down. Michelle Pinon

Alexandra Morse bottom right, was the centre of attention and catalyst behind the No More Hair Mundare charity fundraising event held on June 22. Helping celebrate the event were her younger sister Jordan, grandma Margaret, mom Laurie, and godparents Carla and Mike Meller.

No More Hair Mundare event raises $2,300 for cancer Michelle Pinon Editor

Even though it took only a few seconds to cut; it took years to grow. But Alexandra Morse felt much better after eight inches of her hair was cut off June 22. Every year since she was five, Alexandra has been asking her mom Laurie if her hair was long enough to donate to patients undergoing cancer treatments, but it wasn't until last Friday that the now 10-yearold's wish was granted. For Alexandra, Laurie,

and other family members in attendance at the "No More Hair Mundare" event; it was a very emotional day, but one that held great significance. It was back in 2008 during a visit to see Aunty Christina in the oncology ward at an Edmonton hospital that she saw another little girl, about the same age as she was, in the hallway. The other little girl was undergoing chemotherapy and had lost all her hair. Laurie said it was the "shock" of seeing that

other little girl that prompted many questions, and later, Alexandra's desire to donate her hair to someone else going through treatment. Laurie said the event was "overwhelming;" but was so proud of Alexandra, and all of her schoolmates, staff, and community members who either had their hair cut or head shaved last Friday. Altogether there were nine students, two staff members, and six adults who had their tresses snipped and shaved off, in the

process, they raised close to $2,300 for the Canadian Cancer Society. "It's such an amazing small town," added Laurie, who couldn't help but shed a few tears during the event. "It, (cancer) has hit us all," said Laurie, whose been personally affected by cancer. She has had cancer herself, and cared for her ailing sister Christina until she passed away. For a year, she travelled back and forth by plane every two weeks to look after her sister. "I can't say enough

When Lisa told her mom Pat about the fundraiser, she was more than willing to have her head shaved too. Alexandra's godparents Carla and Mike

Stakes are High as Hail Season Begins Alberta has one of the highest incidences of hail in the world so producers must be prepared for it As crops in the Lamont area start to grow and another hail season gets under way, high commodity prices and input costs are raising the stakes for farmers this year, says Chris Dyck, with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), Alberta’s provincial crop insurer. “Hail is a threat every growing season in Alberta because we have one of the highest incidences of hail in the world. But when crop prices and inputs like fertilizer and seed climb as high as they are now – at well-above average levels – hail becomes an even greater concern for farmers because they have so much invested in the ground,” says Dyck, senior manager of business risk management operations for AFSC. The Crown corporation provides the majority of hail insurance to farmers across Alberta on behalf of the provincial government. “Now is when many farmers start thinking about hail because as soon as their crops emerge from the soil, they’re vulnerable,” says Dyck. He points out hailstorms in late-May and early June have already triggered several claims under the AFSC Straight Hail program this spring in southern Alberta. Last year, the first Straight Hail claim happened on June 4 in the Peace region. “Crops have an amazing ability to rebound from early season hail damage,” says Dyck. “However, those early storms do often result in reduced plant stands and yields. The later hail strikes in the growing season, the greater the damage,” he adds, “because once plants have podded or headed out – usually by mid-July – it’s too late for recovery.” AFSC paid out just over $25.5 million last year on nearly 1,500 Straight Hail claims across the province, including Lamont County. The most severe damage was caused by two major hailstorms – one in early July that tore through crops from Sundre to Red Deer – and a second one on July 18 that cut a wide swath through fields from Millet to Saskatchewan. Several smaller storms also peppered crops with hail in almost every region of the province. “Last year was a good example of the fact that hail strikes everywhere in Alberta, not just in the highest risk area known as Hail Alley that stretches from Calgary to Edmonton, along the Highway 2 corridor,” says Dyck, adding 2011 was an average hail year for Alberta. What kind of hail season lies ahead

this summer is anybody’s guess, he says. “If it’s wet and warm, we usually

than 25 per cent hail damage before being insured with Straight Hail coverage become ineligible for AFSC hail insurance until the next growing

hail insurance in all areas of the province due to the high level of risk involved,” says Dyck. “Hail is risky business, and our mandate as a provincial insurer today is the same as it was back then – to provide hail insurance to farmers in every corner of the province, even in the highest risk townships.”

Just over $25.5 million was paid out to farmers across the province last year through AFSC’s Straight Hail Insurance program. get more hail. If it’s dry, there’s generally less hail. But the weather can change so quickly, it’s impossible to predict,” he says, referring to the dry conditions experienced in 2009. “Parts of the province did end up getting moisture that summer, and we had hail losses of more $30 million.” Jonathan Hofer, who farms 5,000 acres of wheat, barley, and canola near Holden, says his crops have been hit by hail five years in a row. “Last July was one of the worst storms I’ve seen. The stones were golf ball size, and the crop was perfect,” says Hofer. It wiped out 450 acres of his canola and wheat. “As soon as I see the canola coming up in June and the moisture looks good, I put on hail coverage. With our overhead costs so high, we have to.” An increasing number of farmers are electing to take out Straight Hail coverage in April with their crop insurance – before their fields are even planted – qualifying them for a 2 per cent premium discount, says Dyck. “It’s an option we started offering two years ago for producers who want protection the instant their seeds are in the ground – rather than waiting for their crops to emerge and risk early hail damage,” he says, explaining crops that suffer more

It all started when the province passed special legislation in 1938 creating the Alberta Hail Insurance Board. Team Bruderheim, which also included: Carolyne Olechow, Jessica Olechow, Janice Vitt, Tracy Radke, and Ebony Kittlitz. Collectively they raised $2,300 for the cause. Hauch said the event was well planned. “Great time, great people, great event,” he added. It was team member Tracy Radke who began the Friends Fighting Cancer team, said Hauch., who said they are ready to take on the same challenge next year.
