Developer ready to break ground on $5.5 million hotel Michelle Pinon Editor

Timing is everything. And now that the economy is back on track and technical issues have been resolved, developer Wim Jonk will be breaking ground for a new $5.5 million hotel this month. Besides Jonk, owner of the proposed Heartland Hotel, Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner couldn’t be happier about news of the project going ahead. Skinner said the biggest need in the community is for a 56 unit hotel complete with food and guest services, and is so grateful Jonk is proceeding with the project. “It’s a great opportunity for them and us, added Skinner, who believes there will be many spin offs from the project. Jonk said he has already hired a general manager from Lamont, and expects to have between 15 to 20 staff when the hotel is up and running sometime next February. The town recently commited to putting in water and sewer services across Highway 15. The general contractor Cormode & Dickson is in place. Ground work is expected to begin on the 11 acre parcel on the town’s west end in a few short weeks, and the components will be completed using modular construction, and shipped directly on site to 5702-47 Avenue. “We want to be the preferred hotel for tourists, travellers, workers, and other Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner, left, poses with hotel developer Wim Jonk.

guests in the Heartland and surrounding area, said Jonk. His mission as outlined in the mission statement is to: “Create an exciting, warm environment for staff and guests, focused on cleanliness, friendliness, and innovative guest service. Jonk also points out that the Heartland Hotel will be a member of the Alberta Hotel and Lodge Association, that will ensure they are meeting industry standards in terms of health and hospitality requirements. Going the extra mile for clients is top priority for Jonk, and that’s why he will be including a kitchen area in the hotel to offer guests a morning and evening buffet option. There will also be liquor service and separate guest bathrooms. There will also be a separate room for additional seating of guests if required. As well, Jonk plans on operating a shuttle bus service for guests so they can take in local tourist attractions like Elk Island National Park, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, and the gigantic sausage in Mundare. “We get a lot of traffic through here, so that will attract travellers, pointed out Skinner, and noted that the town has been receiving a lot of interest lately, and feels the Heartland name brand will definitely reach a broader audience. “It’s our own trademark name, and it will tie in well to the industrial heartland, and give us the opportunity to expand, added Jonk.

Coun. Strong bids farewell to colleagues and friends Michelle Pinon Editor

Derek Strong was struggling to keep his emotions in check when he stopped by the Town of Lamont administration building Wednesday afternoon. For Strong, who has served on council for the past 20 months, it would be his last visit to the office as he was only hours away from boarding a plane with his wife and four young children for Halifax, Nova Scotia. Strong said the decision to move back home after calling Lamont home for the past three years was a tough one, but one both he and his wife Kelly had felt was necessary in light of the recent passing of his grandmother this past January. “I really enjoyed my time here, said Strong, but felt it was time to head back to his roots to maintain close family ties. “It’s been a great

experience, added Strong. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of special people. He has always had a great interest in politics and says interacting with

Derek Strong people in the community and having the opportunity to problem solve was interesting and beneficial and allowed himself to hone some of the skills he brought to the job. While, serving on town council is about community service more than anything, Strong said he also enjoyed vol-

unteering with parent council at Lamont Elementary School, as well as coaching hockey and ball to youth in the community. He is planning on making a foray into regional politics in Nova Scotia sometime in the near future, and turn it into a full-time career. “The town is definitely on the right track, and hopefully it can continue to move forward, said Strong. In his letter of resignation, dated June 27, Strong thanked his fellow councillors, administration, and supporters “for all of their well wishes on my future endeavors, added Strong. “As well, I would like to thank everyone for giving me the chance to help move forward this ‘diamond in the rough’ town. My family and I will really miss this special place; we will always hold this town and its people close to our hearts.

Budding local scientists enjoy hands on experience Michelle Pinon Editor Whoever said that girls and science don’t mix? Well they do. Just ask Mundare School Grade 8 students Frances Cardinal and Toni Saric. They were two of about 175 students from Elk Island Public Schools who thoroughly enjoyed participating in the 21 annual Young Scientist Conference at the University of Alberta. Biology is one of their favourite subjects, and the teens say having the chance to do scientic investigation and being able to see scientists perform brain surgery on rats during one of the classes was

apply what they were taught and incorporate it into everyday life as well as assist in making life and career choices. Cardinal said they got to see some cool experiments involving a frozen banana and glowing water. “It was a lot of fun, and it was fun to work with other people.” Cardinal, who is interested in a career in dentistry, said she would really like to have the opportunity to attend the conference again sometime in the future. Town Spirit The town of Mundare put on Canada Festivities Sunday evening, which included live bands, glitter tattoos, BBQ sales put on by the local hockey club, and ended the night with a great fireworks show. They closed down main street, and had tables set up as well as plenty of space for the kids to run. Just to see everyone come together to celebrate this great nation we all call home, and to see people come out and get to know each other, as well as sit and visit and have a great time is heart-warming. There were probably close to 150 people that walked or drove over, sat and listened to the music and just enjoyed each others company. It was nice to see that so many people young and old turned out and all sat together to listen to the bands that had come out from Edmonton and Sherwood Park, and just have a relaxed, fun evening. Living in a small town is a great thing. When I lived in Edmonton there was no sense of belonging to a community, I would hardly talk to my neighbours, had to lock my doors constantly and had to worry about so many things. Even though there were lots of things around for a person to do, most things cost extreme amounts of money. So when I moved to Lamont County seven years ago, I was glad to be back in a small town atmosphere. I now know my neighbours, and can go almost anywhere in Lamont and know most of the people. Everyone knows who my children are, so I know that they won't get away with much. I would like to try and see if we as communities, can all come together and work together to put on more events like this. It is a way for all of us to get to know each other, and just have a good time in everyone’s otherwise busy lives, and just feel good about being in our communities. It is at events like these, as well as others put on throughout the year that reminds me just how much I enjoy living in Lamont County, and I hope that more of these events will take place. Letter to the Editor Conservative kitchen-sink bill abuses our democracy Dear Editor, The Conservatives rammed through the House of Commons an omnibus budget bill that is sweeping in scope, deeply flawed in content, and anti-democratic in principle. The Harper Conservatives have eliminated independent bodies like the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy that offer advice it may disagree with. Also, by gutting fifty years of environmental protections, the government has given itself the unilateral power to green-light

major and potentially harmful resource development projects without adequate scrutiny. This bill makes changes to the Fisheries Act that could endanger many fish populations, including the migratory salmon, a timeless presence on the Canadian landscape, not to mention a staple of the economy. Against the advice of many experts, the government will be raising the qualifying age from 65 to 67 for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement, beginning in 2023, thus robbing vulnerable senior citi-

Michelle Pinon Editor

zens of up to $30 000 in much needed income. As if targeting seniors isn`t enough, the new changes in Employment Insurance will impact those who work in seasonal employment and the government did not even bother to consult employers or the provinces which will be most impacted. In addition to criticizing specific measures in this budget bill, the major problem is that it amends, creates or eliminates 70 different federal acts. By burying dozens of significant and damaging changes within a ‘kitchen sink’ bill, the government is prevent-

ing Members from doing their job by giving these changes proper consideration and scrutiny. While undermining the role of Parliament, Bill C-38 is a clear abuse of power and makes a joke of democracy. Once again, Canadians are kept in the dark and it is of the utmost importance that we raise awareness to this unprecedented situation. The Liberal Party will continue to fight against this kind of anti-democratic abuse of power. Sincerely, Marc Garneau, MP Liberal House Leader

Lamont students depict meaning of health centre Michelle Pinon Editor

Students at Lamont Elementary School have put their own special imprint on the Centennial of the Lamont Health Care Centre (LHCC) with a special poster project. More than 250 posters illustrating the special importance, both past and present, that the staff and facility have played

and continue to play in their lives was the focal point of the project. Of those entries, 16 posters were chosen to be showcased in a Community Calendar, that is already available for purchase. Jody Zabel, facility social worker and centennial committee member, said the response from the students, staff, family and community members to the project has just been amazing.

One thousand community calendars were printed, and are available for sale at the LHCC. They will also be available to purchase at the Summer Sizzler trade show. The remainder of the entries will be framed and put up for display in the hallways of the

health centre over the next couple of months. Assistant principal Kari Archer said it was really important for the school to be involved in the community event. "I'm just glad to have been able to contribute in some way," added Archer.

Lamont Elementary farewell family picnic Photo by Tracy Harding

Lamont Elementary teachers put on their annual family picnic Wednesday, June 28. They had hotdogs, carrots and cucumbers, chip assortment, and watermelon for the families to enjoy. This is a chance for the teachers to say fairwell until the fall, and thank the families for a great school year. After enjoying the supper the kids got to play at the parks.

Bruderheim town councillor resigns After more than a year on Bruderheim Town Council, George Hargesheimer has resigned due to new work commitments. We will certainly miss his humour and the experience and wisdom he brought to the table, says Bruderheim Mayor, Karl Hauch. The Town of Bruderheim and its council would like to thank George for his time, commitment and dedication. It can

be difficult when change occurs, says Hauch. Fortunately, we have a great team on Council, so I am positive we will carry on with the important work for the Town we represent. With the next municipal election less than 18 months away, a by-election does not need to take place unless Council chooses to hold one. George Hargesheimer

Young Bruderheim girl serves as inspirational role model in the fight to find a cure for juvenile diabetes Michelle Pinon Editor

Finley Taylor is a fighter. She is also a source of inspiration for her mom Erin, dad Trevor and older sisters Averi and Emerson. The six-year-old also inspired her best friend Claire to donate $280 towards her recent fundraising efforts for juvenile diabetes, a disease she has had for the past few years. When Claire heard her best friend Finley was raising money funds for the Telus Walk for the Cure, she asked all of her friends to donate money to Finley's charity instead of give presents on her birthday. "We were so touched by such an unselfish act from a six-year-old. Finley gave her a huge hug and thank you letter," said Erin. Claire and her little brother

Finley must have her sugar levels checked every few hours to ensure she is withinthe appropriate range. Cameron, and parents Wayne and Stephanie braved the early morning rain June 12 to walk with the Taylors and other family members to raise funds for a cure. "It was an amazing experience," added Erin, as Finley collected $1,175; of which $280 was donated by her BFF (best friend forever), Claire. "We all learned a little about kindness and friendship from these two little girls that day." The Bruderheim residents are praying for a cure. "There are huge strides being made in finding a cure for type one diabetes. "People need to know this type of Finley and her best friend diabetes is not from eat- there for each other. ing too much candy or from being overweight. It is an autoimmune disease. The body for some reason attacks the pancreas and kills all the islet cells that make insulin. Scientists are on the verge of trying to reverse this," points out Erin.

That is why she, and her family members and friends participated in the Telus Walk for the Cure recently. "Finley is so amazing. She is our little fighter. She rarely complains about all she has to endure." said Erin. "She, (Finley,) wakes up and has an insulin injection first thing and has two to three more throughout the day, and needs six to 10 finger pokes a day to check her sugar levels. She also has Members of Finley’s Fighters: back row left, Stephanie and Wayne Olechow, Lisa a strict eating schedule of Taylor, Linda and Marvin Perrott, Trevor and Jack Taylor. Lamont Elementary students show off their talents Tracy Harding Staff Writer

Lamont Elementary School hosted their annual talent show Wednesday, and the students got a chance to showcase their talents in front of the whole school, family, and friends. Some of these students are trained in their talents, while others just wanted to perform and do what they enjoy. There was everything from dancing, singing,

fiddle players, piano players, and even an Aikido demonstration. With a total of 37 performances, the students were into showing what they know. Some of the students that train in dance showed their performances that they have perfected all year, along with kids that practice playing their instruments. out of the school already by that time. The show was brought to a close with a dance performed by all the teachers, who were wanting to go up in front of the students, and they encouraged all the students to get up and dance as well.

Rosalind Bowes was first and foremost recognized as a shining face in the Lamont High School, where she worked for 15 years as the school’s secretary. However, after a continuous struggle with her health, the school and community had to say goodbye to this familiar face on April 16, 2012. Anyone who knew Bowes knew her as a dedicated worker and mother. She was recognized for all of the extra hours she constantly put into the school, and her ability to turn any project into a work of art. She is remembered by her friends as a woman who always was able to find the time to pursue her passions, while still giving everything she could to the job she loved. Even though her official title was that of a simple secretary, Bowes was always so much more than that to the people who knew and worked with her. Throughout the years of her service to the school, she put in hours and hours of volunteer work and was an integral part

of the school’s team. It was because of Bowes’ help that many programs were able to operate smoothly year after year. Bowes had constantly helped run charity events such as the Terry Fox Run, and the 30 Hour Famine. It was also with her help that many internal school projects were so successful. Along with her ever present hand in the life of the school, Bowes’ was also known for her constant consideration for those in the community of Lamont and elsewhere. In the past, Bowes was involved in an event donating 100 handmade quilts to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. She also organized a class at the school to volunteer for a lesson in citizenship by helping an elderly member of the community with her yard and garden work. Through her constant presence in the school and community, Bowes will always be remembered as a woman who was always striving to make the world a better place, and who made sure that every project she had a hand in turned out to perfection.
