Bull-A-Rama Supreme doesn’t disappoint! Rodeo fans pack the house to participate in the 20th annual event Michelle Pinon Editor

The 20th edition of Bull-A-Rama didn't disappoint as a sold out crowd packed into the Lamont Recreation Centre for the main event Saturday evening. The excitement was palpable as rodeo enthusiasts of all ages waited for the show to get underway just after 7 p.m. Members of the Lamont & District Agricultural Society led the way with sparklers into the ring to kick-off the celebration. Presentations were made to scholarship recipients Colby Eleniak and Alicia Koziak. The Lamont Fire Department was the lucky recipient of $2,500. Members of

the Schinkinger family received plaques on behalf of the Ag. Society in honour of Conrad Schinkinger who started the event. Master of Ceremony Wayne Schoepp introduced Bonnie Chudyk, who gave an overview of the history of the event. Thanks were extended to clown Cody Schopp, who has been with the Bull-A-Rama for the past 10 years. President Aaron Wick and Sherry Stadnick presented the cheques and certificates to the scholarship recipients. Then it was time for the introduction of the 30 cowboys and the singing of O Canada. Glow in the dark necklaces were thrown out by the cowboys before they took to the chutes.

There were only eight riders who managed to stay on top of the fiesty bulls to qualify for the short go. In the end, it was Red Deer cowboy Neal Wallator. The dance was a huge success as well as folks kicked up their heels to Kory Wlos. While there may have been a few hiccups along the way, organizers made everything work out right and on time. Ag. Society treasurer Frank Cholak said BullA-Rama was Conrad Schinkinger’s dream and passion, and he was glad members paid tribute to Schinkinger and his legacy. Now it's time for recuperation before planning gets underway once again for the 21st installment.

Longtime Lamont Ag. Society members love to serve Jazmine Inkster Student reporter

It all started with Conrad Schinkinger 20 years ago. The Bull-A-Rama had ultimately been his vision back in 1994, and from then till now, the event has remained a steady part of spring here in Lamont and just as much a success as the very first. The event has also been a major one for the Ag Society, as well as its members. Volunteer members Mell and Sharon Snyder have been with the Ag Society for many years, and with the Bull-ARama from the very start. Sharon, a member since her high school years, had a large amount of exposure to the society as she grew up, with her father being the former president. Mell was also a former president of the society. Both spent their entire lives in Lamont. “This was our home community” states Mell. The Bull-A-Rama is an event that today, is known far and wide, as the couple explains that there are people who come from all over to compete, as well as watch the event. This year, there were riders from as far away as New Zealand and Australia competing in the event. Bull-A-Rama Supreme has attracted cowboys the world over, and has also been voted by the Canadian Bullriding Association “The best in Western Canada” four years in a row. Some of the biggest changes for the society is how the volunteers prepare for the event now compared to when it first started. “We had no extra panels,” explain the Snyders. “We had to take down most of the outside arena and bring it inside. We even rented bucking chutes. Over the years, we have acquired panels and chutes just for BullA-Rama” Mell and Sharon also added that this year was probably one of the hardest for setup, because of all the snow that had frozen the bleachers into

the ground, causing them to have to rent a steamer. “Mother Nature has not cooperated” There have also been a few minor changes over the years such as the No Bull Trade Show which was also a part of last year’s event, and the big screen TV in the back where people can sit and watch the televised version of the event by Shaw instead of being in the stands. Another important part of the event is the volunteers who help make everything happen. “When this first started, we were the

young people,” jokes Sharon, saying that they can’t do as much of the heavy lifting needed for setup, so it is up to the younger members and volunteers to ensure everything is where it needs to be for the big night. Over the years, the Bull-A-Rama has been able to put over $550,000 back into the community by showing their support to community organizations as well as scholarships. “We always try to support groups” says Mell. Some of the organizations that are taking part

this year are: the Lamont High School Grad Committee, the 4-H Club, and the Chipman Lions Club. The Lamont Fish and Game Association also sold popcorn during the event, with all of the proceeds going towards their youth camps, and to the association in general. Overall, the event’s general success can be seen by many, as the Ag Society has been asked multiple times to help other places put on their events, and to tell them the secrets of success.

For Sharon and Mell Snyder, volunteering with the Agricultural Society has become a labour of love.

Reader Beware Michelle Pinon Editor

The other day I received a distress call. Not a phone call, but an email call. My anxiety shot up considerbly when I read: "I am writing this with tears in my eyes..." Quickly I glanced at the senders name again. Cliff Moroziuk. Puzzling? Then came more strange words, "Sorry, I didn't inform you about my trips. A few days back we made an unannounced vacation trip to Manila, Philipines. Everything was going fine until last night when we got mugged on our way back to the hotel, all cash and credit card were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us." How awful! A dream vacation gone south because of hoodlums. Then the message went onto say: "We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves soon but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. please i need you to loan me some money ($1,850 USD). I will refund you as soon as I'm back home, Let me know if you can loan me some money? so I can let you know how to get it to me. I look forward to hear from you Soon." The message ended, "Thanks You, Cliff." How strange! You see, Cliff is someone I had previously contacted regarding information on Spasa Muskalik Church, and efforts to preserve the aging structure. I phoned Cliff after reading the email to ask if he had been on a recent holiday? Even though he said yes, it wasn't to the Philippines. And no, he didn't ask me for money. While we shared a laugh, it might not have turned out to be so funny if I had been a friend of his rather an acquaintance, and sent the money willingly to help him out. Besides some of the mistakes in the text, the only other clue things were different from previous correspondence was the 0 in the reply address which did not correspond to his original email address. How creepy! Just to think one can be so easily duped by online criminals. It made me realize just how important security measures and systems are, and would like to advise other cyber users to beware and watch out for the ever increasing number of scammers out there.

Andrew student captures medals during recent tournaments Cassie Melenka wants to be the best. The Grade 9 student at Andrew School describes herself as very competitive, and her desire, determination and hard work have paid off both on and off the court. Melenka recently won medals at two badminton tournaments, and she is hoping to add a few more to her collection before the season ends. Melenka’s strategy is simple, wear out the opponent, and takes everything one game at a time. She loves to compete, and has also shown grit and determination in team sports as well this past fall and winter in volleyball and basketball. Cassie also participates in track and field, and is looking forward to a couple of meets this

spring. While sports seem to come “naturally for Melenka, so does academics as she always attains honours. Despite all of her success in the classroom and in the field of athletics; Melenka is very shy about talking about her achievements. Fortunately, athletics director Cory Kokotailo doesn’t mind broadcasting her achievements for all to hear. Deservedly, a job well done.
