Durham Library Foundation was founded as a 501(c)3 in 2000, to develop and encourage the long-term financial health and growth of Durham County Library through giving, endowment and capital contributions. As a private, nonprofit organization, the Foundation solicits, receives and administers private gifts from many sources, including those not available to a government-funded library.

The Foundation manages holdings of more than $3.2 million, funded by significant gifts from the National Endowment for the Humanities, GlaxoSmithKline, the Friends of the Durham Library, past and present members of the Foundation Board of Directors, local and national companies and nonprofit organizations, and generous individual donors who support the mission of the library.

Durham Library Foundation has developed independent and prudent investment strategies to maximize each gift’s long-term benefit to the library. Gifts are used to fund enhancements and improvements that the library could not otherwise afford through its annual operating budget. The Foundation refers to these enhancements as “the margin of excellence.”

Signature Foundation-Funded Initiatives: Library Youth Partners

Funded by a grant from GlaxoSmithKline, the Library Youth Partnership builds public speaking and mentoring skills in teens, by teaching them to develop and present literaturebased math, science, art and other programs to preschool and elementary aged children.  Summer Reading

Durham Library Foundation is a partner in funding this most popular library program that engages children in reading throughout the summer to help them retain what they’ve learned each school year.

Humanities Society

Participation in this frequent attendee program more than doubled in Fiscal Year 2012. Patrons sign up for free, and are rewarded for attending humanities programs with special invitation-only events. Popular destinations this year included a backstage tour of Durham Performing Arts Center, a holiday celebration at Hill House and a private tour of Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
