BETTIE REYNOLDS: COWGIRL TO CATTLE QUEEN Sunday, Jul. 16, 2 p.m.  Durham Arts Council, PSI Theatre, 120 Morris St., Durham, NC 27701 At age 16, Bettie Reynolds (1851-1935) was one of the first women to ride the cattle trails of the West. Come see this costumed re-creation of a woman who started out in a sod roof house with dirt floors and became the owner of a cattle empire extending from Texas to neighboring states. BEAT GENERATION WRITERS Saturday, Jul. 22, 3 p.m.  Southwest Regional The Washington Street Writing Group celebrates its 25th anniversary with an afternoon of poetry and discussion focused on the Beats and other poets from the post-WWII to mid-1960s era. ADF BOOK DISCUSSION WITH BILL T. JONES Saturday, Jul. 29, 1 p.m.  South Regional Join us for this rare opportunity to engage in a book discussion with world-renowned dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones. The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald is the inspiration for one of Jones’ performances, the ADF-commissioned Analogy/Ambros: The Emigrant. The novel is described by The New York Times book reviewer Larry Wolff as “a profound and original work of fiction, The Emigrants pursues the stories of four people as they move from land to land—and, above all, as they move through history” (March 30, 1997). HISTORY OF DURHAM’S AR-RAZZAQ ISLAMIC CENTER Saturday, Aug. 19, 3 p.m.  Stanford L. Warren Join us for a look back at the rich history of this local institution. Started in the 1950s, the Ar-Razzaq Islamic Center, formerly Muhammad’s Mosque #34, is one of the oldest Muslim communities in North Carolina. Naomi Feaste, Community Curator, and Katie Spencer, Curator, Museum of Durham History, will introduce this ongoing research project, and welcome stories about its development from the local community. WORLD WAR I AND DURHAM’S SISTER CITIES Sunday, Aug. 20, 3 p.m.  South Regional Join us to learn how all of Durham’s Sister Cities, except Arusha, fought with the Allied Powers against Germany and Austria during World War I. From Durham, England’s famous Light Infantry to naval escorts provided by Toyama, Japan, each city took part in the war effort. Arusha, now in Tanzania, was involved as part of German-occupied East Africa.

IN THE WINGS: THE CAKE Monday, Aug. 28, 7 p.m.  South Regional Join members of PlayMakers Repertory Company for a discussion of their upcoming regional premiere, “The Cake” by Bekah Brunstetter. Della makes cakes, not judgment calls. But when the daughter of an old friend reappears in her life with a new surprise, Della is forced to reexamine some of her deeply-held beliefs. Food, faith, and family loyalty collide in a paradigm-shifting comedy that’s sure to leave you hungry for more.

FRANK HYMAN: THE NEO-CONFEDERATES DON’T KNOW THEIR HISTORY Saturday, Sep. 9, 2 p.m.  North Regional Frank Hyman’s essay “The Confederacy Was a Con Job on White People and Still Is” can be found online in over a dozen newspapers. Did you also know that a majority of Tarheels voted against secession? Hyman asserts that while neo-Confederates like Rep. Larry Pittman are gaining power, they don’t know their history. As part of the discussion, Hyman will offer strategies for countering "alternative facts." Hyman lives in Durham, where he has held two local elected offices. ART WITH THE EXPERTS: CARLO DOLCI Monday, Sep. 25, 7 p.m.  Stanford L. Warren Join Molly Boarati, Assistant Curator from the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, for a discussion and slide lecture on The Medici’s Painter: Carlo Dolci and 17th Century Florence. This is the first exhibition in the United States devoted to the luminous and meticulously rendered paintings of Italian artist Carlo Dolci (1616–1687). A favorite among the powerful Medici family, Dolci was an incredibly important painter in 17th-century Florence. See http://nasher.duke.edu/dolci for more information on this exhibit. INTRODUCTION TO TAI CHI Saturdays, starting Sep. 2, 9:45 a.m. Learn 24 poses of one of three Tai Chi routines. The practice of Tai Chi increases flexibility and balance as well as promotes peace of mind. Wear loose, non-restrictive clothing. No experience needed.

FAMILY YOGA Mondays, starting Sep. 11, 1:30 p.m. This yoga class welcomes all bodies and all levels of experience. We designed this time to practice yoga together in an accepting and non-judgmental atmosphere. Mats will not be provided. Please bring your own mat if you have one. Children are welcome.
