Usually the conversation begins with, “I just love my library.” From there specifics are shared: “Thank you for having ebooks.” “It was so easy to follow directions on how to download to my Kindle.” “I attended one of your programs recently and really had a great time” or “I just brought my child to storytime and was amazed at the creativity, patience and energy of staff.” It’s always a pleasure to engage in conversation about library visits being an experience that affects our patrons’ lives in a positive way. There’s also the opposite side of the coin, though, and that’s what I’d like to focus on: Sometimes Durham County Library is the best kept secret in town. More often than I would like to admit I meet members of the community who are unaware of the many services we offer. Often these users are avid readers, loyal supporters and overall champions of the library, but they are simply unaware of all that is available to a library card holder. Many are unaware that even if they lack the time to visit a library in person, they can visit our virtual branch, durhamcountylibrary.org. You read correctly, our online presence is considered a branch and offers many of the same services as our brick and mortar structures. You may think the only thing missing is a friendly librarian greeting you with a smile, but you can even find that on our Teen Zone page or our Children’s storytime pages. I place great value on all users of Durham County Library whether they enter our library through our sliding glass doors or our virtual doors. That’s why I want to take this time to inform some and remind others of a few of our best kept secrets at Durham County Library.
First some of our online treasures: • Resources and databases including Morningstar and Transparent Language (foreign language instruction) • Video story time for young children • Top Ten Titles listing (most popular checkouts of the week), reading recommendations and more • Durham historical photograph collections and online exhibits Treasures when you enter our doors: • Computer classes on Internet use and email, as well as Microsoft Office • Joblink computers designated for job searches and resume help only • A popular collection of CDs and DVDs to browse and checkout • A North Carolina Room that features books, manuscripts, maps and more that capture Durham’s history • Engaging programs for all ages • Meeting spaces that make the library a welcoming community center There are even unexpected treasures in our parking lots: • Reserved parking and charging stations for hybrid and electric vehicles at North Regional, South Regional and the Main Library When it comes to Durham County Library, make sure to tell your family, friends and coworkers about the many services we offer. We are one secret that definitely should be shared!
