Victor Louis Alfred was the younger son of Joseph Hyacinthe François de Paule de Rigaud, Comte de Vaudreuil (1740–1817), who was a French connoisseur and art collector at the court of King Louis XVI. He was the alleged lover of Gabrielle de Polastron, Duchesse de Polignac (1749–1793), a favourite of Marie Antoinette.
