One of England's finest Tudor manors Athelhampton is one of the most important Tudor manor houses in England and the Great Hall is one of the finest examples of 15th century domestic architecture in the land. The earliest part of the house, which incorporates the Great Hall, was built around 1485 by Sir William Martyn. Sir William was a successful London merchant becoming Master of the Skinners Company and Lord Mayor of London in 1492. He was knighted by Henry VII in 1494 and received a licence to enclose a deer park and build a battlemented house with towers. His tomb is in the Athelhampton aisle of St. Mary's Church, Puddletown. The west wing and a gatehouse were added around 1550 (the latter demolished in 1862). The house was inherited by his son, Nicholas, who married Margaret, a sister to, and co-heiress of , Nicholas Wadham, the founder of Wadham College, Oxford. When their male descendants pre-deceased them, the house passed to their surviving daughters, one of whom married Sir Ralph Bankes, who went on to build Kingston Lacey. Sir Robert Long bought Athelhampton in 1665 and the Estate passed through his family to the fourth Earl of Mornington, the nephew of the Duke of Wellington. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the house was divided into two households and by the time it was purchased by George Wood in 1848 it was in a run-down state. In 1891 the house was acquired by the antiquarian Alfred Cart de Lafontaine, who resolved to restore the house to its former glory. He engaged Inigo Thomas to create one of England's finest gardens creating a series of "outdoor rooms" in the Renaissance style. De Lafontaine was an interesting character. He was born Alfred Cart and according to contemporary records, his father was a scrap dealer from London. In 1930 it was acquired by the Honourable Mrs Esmond Harmsworth, who was a notable hostess during the 1930's. At this time Athelhampton was the backdrop for some lavish parties with a guest list including celebrities such as Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Aly Khan, and Noel Coward. In 1949 Athelhampton was purchased by Rodney Phillips, who was married to Marika, the illegitimate daughter of Diego Rivera and the Russian artist, Marevna (born Marie Vorobieff-Stebelska in 1892). The Phillips' marriage ended in divorce and the house then came into the ownership of the Cooke family.

The Cookes at Athelhampton Robert Victor Cooke, FRCS, an eminent surgeon from Bristol, was a great collector and he had long resolved to restore an historic house as a backdrop for his growing collection. His numerous purchases during the 1930's and 1940's are documented on old invoices from leading dealers of the period including Norman Adams, SW Wolsey , Gill and Reigate Ltd, Charles Duveen, Hotspur and G. Noel Butler. The quality of the collection is demonstrated by the fact that many of the pieces have been illustrated in standard works on English furniture including Victor Chinnery's "Oak Furniture: The British Tradition", published in 1979; Tobias Jellinek's "Early British Chairs and Seats", published in 2009, and Anthony Coleridge's magisterial "Chippendale Furniture", published in 1968. Furthermore, the William and Mary japanned cabinet on silvered strand was exhibited in the seminal exhibition in Washington D.C. in 1984 "The Treasure Houses of Britain". Following the premature death of his wife, Elizabeth, Robert Victor Cooke decided to present the house and gardens to his son, Robert, and his future daughter-in-law Jenifer, on the occasion of their marriage in 1966. The house and contents were the subject of a learned article in the Connoisseur Magazine in May 1968 Sir Robert (Robin) Cooke and his wife Jenny continued to improve the house and gardens. Robin, who was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford, was MP for Bristol West from 1957 to 1979. He received his knighthood on retiring from the House of Commons in 1979. Historic buildings and their contents were a great interest and he was a member of the Historic Buildings Council for England from 1979-1980 and did two stints as Vice-Chairman of the Arts and Heritage Committee of the Conservative Party. When the National Heritage Memorial Fund was created in April 1980, Robin Cooke was one of the first to be appointed as a Trustee. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the fabric and furnishings of the Palace of Westminster and his passion for the work of Augustus Welby Pugin is clearly reflected in many of the gothick revival pieces he acquired for Athelhampton. Following his untimely death from motor neurone disease his widow, Jenny, married the Right Honourable Sir Edward Du Cann in 1990. Tragically Jenny died in 1995 and the house was inherited by her son, Patrick. With the help of his wife Andrea, and their sons, George and James, he has continued to restore and maintain the house. Athelhampton as you see it today is testament to their dedication. Little wonder Simon Jenkins chose it for the cover of his book "England's 1000 Best Houses".

Artistic and literary associations Thomas Hardy was a regular visitor to Athelhampton and in his father, a stonemason, worked on the house. Hardy set his poem “The Dane of Athelhall” at the house and his “The Dame and Sir Nameless” he refers to the tombs of the Martyn family in St. Marys Church, Puddletown. In the early 1970’s the house was the setting for the critically acclaimed film "Sleuth", starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. The house also featured in a number of television series in the 1970’s and 1980’s including the “Goodies” and “Dr Who”. More recently, in 2009, Julian Fellowes (Lord Fellowes of West Stafford) used the house as the backdrop for his film “From Time to Time” starring Dame Maggie Smith and Timothy Spall.

Provenance: HRH Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh. Sir John Conroy, Bt. 1841. Princess Sophia was born at Buckingham Palace, one of the six daughters of King George III and Queen Charlotte. She spent most of her life as a companion of her mother and the princesses were not allowed to mix with anyone outside the Royal Court. Tragically, for her last ten years she was blind. She died on 27th May 1848 at Vicarage Place, Kensington. She was buried in Kensal Green, Cemetery, London, rather than at Windsor Castle, as she wished to be near her brother, Prince Augustus Frederick, the Duke of Sussex.

The reverse of the painting bears an old handwritten inscription "HRH The Princess Sophia, daughter of King George III, nat. 1777, ob. 1848, Sir. Wm. Beechey - pinxt Given by HRH to Sir John Conroy Bt." (on the reverse of the canvas) and "HRH The Princess Sophia, daughter of King George III 1777/ob.1848 Sir Wm. In 1928 the Great Western Railway introduced a new class of express passenger locomotives. Named after English and Welsh country houses with Hall in their title, they were known as the Hall Class. They were very successful and 259 were built up to 1943. From 1943 the locomotive was redesigned and brought up to modern standards, while retaining its essential characteristics, and a new class was introduced, known as Modified Halls, of which 71 were built between 1944 and 1950. Athelhampton Hall, number 6971, was built at Swindon and went into service in October 1947. It was originally based in Bristol but spent much of its working life at Tyseley, Birmingham. Withdrawn in October 1964, it was broken up shortly afterwards. When Hall Class locomotives were withdrawn it was quite common for the owners of country houses which had Hall Class locomotives named after them to buy the nameplates. £2,000-4,000

CONDITIONS OF SALE Duke’s carries on business with bidders, buyers and all those present in the auction room prior to or in connection with a sale on the following General Conditions and on such other terms, conditions and notices as may be referred to herein.

(2) We shall, as agent for the seller and on our own behalf pursue these rights and remedies only so far as is reasonable to make appropriate recovery in respect of breach of these conditions

DEFINITIONS In these Conditions: (a) “auctioneer” means the firm of Duke’s or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; (b) “deliberate forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source but which is unequivocally described in the catalogue as being the work of a particular creator and which at the date of the sale had a value materially less than it would have had if it had been in accordance with the description; (c) “hammer price” means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the auctioneer brings down the hammer; (d) “terms of consignment” means the stipulated terms and rates of commission on which Duke’s accepts instructions from sellers or their agents; (e) “total amount due” means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting buyer under these Conditions; (f) “sale proceeds” means the net amount due to the seller, being the hammer price of the lot sold less commission at the stated rate, Value Added Tax chargeable and any other amounts due to us by the seller in whatever capacity and however arising; (g) “You”, “Your”, etc. refer to the buyer as identified in Condition 2. (h) The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate.

2 BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) the maker of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the buyer at the hammer price and any dispute about a bid shall be settled at the auctioneer’s absolute discretion by reoffering the Lot during the course of the auction or otherwise. The auctioneer shall act reasonably in exercising this discretion. (c) Bidders shall be deemed to act as principals. (d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (e) Our right to bid on behalf of the seller is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve and the right to refuse any bid is also reserved.

12 AGENCY The auctioneer normally acts as agent only and disclaims any responsibility for default by sellers or buyers.

INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the auctioneer’s sole discretion.

THE PURCHASE PRICE The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 25% plus VAT on the premium at the rate imposed by law.

VALUE ADDED TAX Value Added Tax on the hammer price is imposed by law on all items affixed with an asterisk or double asterisk. Value Added Tax is charged at the appropriate rate prevailing by law at the date of sale and is payable by buyers of relevant Lots. *VAT payable at 5.00% on the hammer price and 20% on the buyers premium.

6 PAYMENT (1) Immediately a Lot is sold you will: (a) give to us, if requested, proof of identity, and (b) pay to us the total amount due in cash or in such other way as is agreed by us. (2) Any payments by you to us may be applied by us towards any sums owing from you to us on any account whatever without regard to any directions of you or your agent, whether express or implied. (3) The Auctioneer may require a deposit of 5% of the hammer price immediately. If the buyer is unable to meet this requirement to the Auctioneer’s satisfaction they reserve the right to cancel the sale immediately. 7 TITLE AND COLLECTION OF PURCHASES (1) The ownership of any Lots purchased shall not pass to you until you have made payment in full to us of the total amount due. (2) You shall at your own risk and expense take away any lots that you have purchased and paid for not later than 3 working days following the day of the auction or upon the clearance of any cheque used for payment after which you shall be responsible for any removal, storage and insurance charges. (3) No purchase can be claimed or removed until it has been paid for. 8 REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT OR FAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES (1) If any Lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, we, as agent for the seller and on our own behalf, shall at our absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights we may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights and remedies: (a) to proceed against you for damages for breach of contract; (b) to rescind the sale of that Lot and/or any other Lots sold by us to you; (c) to resell the Lot (by auction or private treaty) in which case you shall be responsible for any resulting deficiency in the total amount due (after crediting any part payment and adding any resale costs). Any surplus so arising shall belong to the seller; (d) to remove, store and insure the Lot at your expense and, in the case of storage, either at our premises or elsewhere; (e) to charge interest at a rate not exceeding 1.5% per month on the total amount due to the extent it remains unpaid for more than 3 working days after the sale; (f) to retain that or any other Lot sold to you until you pay the total amount due; (g) to reject or ignore bids from you or your agent at future auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted; (h) to apply any proceeds of sale of other Lots due or in future becoming due to you towards the settlement of the total amount due and to exercise a lien (that is a right to retain possession of) any of your property in our possession for any purpose until the debt due is satisfied.

THIRD PARTY LIABILITY All members of the public on our premises are there at their own risk and must note the lay-out of the accommodation and security arrangements. Accordingly neither the auctioneer nor our employees or agents shall incur liability for death or personal injury (except as required by law by reason of our negligence) or similarly for the safety of the property of persons visiting prior to or at a sale.

10 COMMISSION BIDS Whilst prospective buyers are strongly advised to attend the auction and are always responsible for any decision to bid for a particular Lot and shall be assumed to have carefully inspected and satisfied themselves as to its condition we will if so instructed clearly and in writing execute bids on their behalf. Neither the auctioneer nor our employees or agents shall be responsible for any failure to do so save where such failure is unreasonable. Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to prefer the first bid so made. 11 WARRANTY OF TITLE AND AVAILABILITY The seller warrants to the auctioneer and you that the seller is the true owner of the property consigned or is properly authorised by the true owner to consign it for sale and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims.

13 TERMS OF SALE The seller acknowledges that Lots are sold subject to the stipulations of these Conditions in their entirety and on the Terms of Consignment as notified to the consignor at the time of the entry of the Lot. 14 DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION (1) The Catalogue contains an Entry about each Lot. Each Lot is sold by its respective Seller to the Buyer of the Lot as corresponding only with that part of the Entry which is printed in bold letters and with any photograph of the Lot in the Catalogue. The remainder of the Entry, which is not printed in bold letters, represents Duke’s opinion (given on behalf of the seller) about the Lot only and is not part of the Contractual Description in accordance with which the Lot is sold by the Seller. (2) Whilst we seek to describe lots accurately, it may be impractical for us to carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. (3) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction for purposes of consumer legislation. 15 FORGERIES Notwithstanding the preceding Condition, any Lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery (as defined) may be returned to us by you within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought, and is accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the Lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the Lot including any buyer’s premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition. The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale. 16 GENERAL We shall have the right at our discretion, to refuse admission to our premises or attendance at our auctions by any person.
