Abramson and Charneco: The Personal and the MetaphysicalÂ

Many images are asymmetrical as well, indicating an off-balanced state of affairs. This theme is counterbalanced by the colorful clothing and jewelry the women wear, apparel that is individualized and joyful. The color offers a striking contrast to the women’s faces. However, the most positive elements are pictures of the children, without veils: open faces and cheerful demeanors. Unfortunately, their fate might not be as optimistic as it appears now. Cherneco’s exhibit at East Hampton’s Solar Gallery takes on the whole universe, not just a few inhabitants. Yet the works making up “Islands of Memoryâ€? position their themes in isolated places to make a point. The material, like resin, nails and small buildings, seem isolated as well. Even so, they are all connected in some way. Similar to Charneco’s Emily Abramson’s “Merasi Women Under the Veilâ€? past achievements, the objects resemble a map or There are no figures in her work, no mother to blueprint through which we must travel to find identify with, only small constructed blocks. Two female artists currently have impressive exhibits that evoke both similar and dissimilar qualities. Their bonds and differences say a lot about emerging artists on the East End today, including their themes, media and worldviews. First, the aspects that connect them: They are both young women in a relatively male-oriented local market whose experiences and training come primarily from academic pursuits. Their first solo shows also emerged just after graduation even though it’s been several years since Darlene Charneco finished at Southampton College. Their themes are passionately felt and ones that will no doubt continue to engage them as years go by. Emily Abramson’s work with Folk Arts Rajasthan (an organization helping Merasi women in India gain empowerment) has put her on a very personal path. Photographing these women and their children not only documents their life but also defines their dilemma. Charneco’s passion is connected to life’s dynamics as well, but with a science-based focus.
