Music, Art, Literature at LongHouse By Allyson Zacharoff LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton—Jack Larsen’s renowned 16acre outdoor art garden—will host three unique events this Saturday, July 31, including the official release of the new book, Jack Lenor Larsen’s LongHouse, by Molly Chappellet. Chappellet, a friend of Larsen’s, captured the Reserve’s beauty in 220 photographs over the past decade. She was able to choose from thousands of images to create a book that artistically honors both the natural and the manmade, in both the gardens at LongHouse and the art installations that have been there over the past 10 years. Chappellet will be at the Reserve for a book signing at 6 p.m. The special edition, priced at $75, has a cover designed by Larsen himself, as well as pages of hand-dyed and hand-folded Japanese paper. This edition is currently available at LongHouse, with the trade edition available from Chronicle Books in the fall. Bruna Martin of LongHouse shared that it “is an amazing book,” that the LongHouse community is very excited about. Saturday will also mark the opening of a new exhibition. Ceramic works by Kenyan Magdalene Odundo will be on display until October. The opening will provide an early and personal viewing of her contemporary pieces. The exhibition preview begins at 5:30 p.m., when the gardens will also open.

String Trio, playing “String Trio in B Flat D 471” by Franz Shubert and “Serenade in D Major, op.8 for Violin, Viola and Violoncello” by Ludwig van Beethoven. This portion of the evening, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., is dependent on weather. Everyone, from the most devoted art aficionado to the lover of classical music is sure to enjoy the events this weekend at LongHouse, because as Martin said, there will be “a little bit of everything.” Tickets to the day’s events are $20 for non-members, $10 for members. Having lived or spent time in several African countries, as well as Europe and part of the United States, Odundo’s work has earned her great recognition throughout her life, including a 2008 African Art Recognition Award, that she received from the Detroit Art Institute’s Friends of African and African-American Art, as well as her appointment as an Officer of the British Empire for her service to the arts, also in 2008. Odundo lives in Scotland, where she teaches art classes. The third of this Saturday’s “three exciting events,” as Martin described them, will be the second LongHouse concert this summer, produced in collaboration with the Music Festival of the Hamptons. This Serenade in the Wind concert will feature music by the Festival

other children their age. The organization asks for a voluntary contribution for the lessons, but never turns a budding dancer away due to her family’s financial situation. The dancers are partnered with high school students throughout the program, culminating in a final recital. The event organizers wanted to find a charity that would help children, since teaching young people was such a large part of Goldstein’s life. “She never married, she never had kids, but she loved kids,” Mindy Schneider said, “we just try to honor Beverly and her love for children.” For tickets to the BG Open, on August 5 at 3:30 p.m. at East Hampton Indoor Tennis, contact bgopen2010@gmail.com.
