She was ahead of her time. This was, after all, well before our modern, local farmers markets developed and before many of our boutique farmers had started to till the East End soil. She credits her own Mediterranean heritage with her lifelong search for quality and freshness. By Stacy Dermont In addition to his recognition as a world-class chef, Marcus Samuelsson is an award-winning cookbook author with titles in both English and Swedish. The book that makes Samuelsson a perfect fit for Dan’s Taste of Two Forks is his 2009 release, New American Table. It’s all about the food that Americans, who hail from all over the world, cook in their homes, often using local ingredients. Sarabeth Levine has long been a food celeb in New York. Her James Beard Pastry Chef Award garnered international attention but with the release of her encyclopedic and gorgeously photographed cookbook, Sarabeth’s Bakery, From My Hands to Yours last year, her celebrity skyrocketed. Now she’s

at work on a breakfast cookbook, due out in 2013. James Beard Award-winning pastry chef, restaurateur, entrepreneur, legendary maker of jams—all of these titles apply to Sarabeth Levine. In recent years she’s added blogger, photographer, cookbook author and mixologist to the very rich mix. With her husband Bill Levine, Sarabeth operates eight popular restaurants – with a ninth due to open in Tribeca next month. Sarabeth is a perfectionist in the best sense – everything must be exactly right so that it delivers the most pleasure possible. Savoring the Hamptons, Discovering the Food and Wine of Long Island’s East End is this season’s top-selling cookbook for good reason. It’s written by none other than the Queen of East End Cuisine, Silvia Lehrer. Lehrer prides herself on the simplicity of her recipes. Lehrer is a master of the form – publishing weekly recipes in Dan’s Papers that are easy to shop for and easy to prepare, always delicious. Check out her column, Simple Art of Cooking on page 103 of this paper. The forward in this book, by Alan Alda, sums it up, “In these pages, you’ll meet the people of this island who keep the bees, dig the clams, grow the zucchini and tend the chickens and turkeys and goats, along with gifted chefs‌.â€? It’s your handy – and beautiful – guide to bringing your meals from field to table. This book is a compendium of recipes that use local ingredients to realize classic dishes. The Lehrers built their beautiful Water Mill home in 1985 and moved to this area full time in 1991. Twelve years ago Lehrer hit on the idea of a book that profiled local food producers and culture.
