Review: King of Madison Avenue By T.J. Clemente Alas, the sheer pleasure of being able to read a really compelling, interesting narrative isn’t always the way it is. But in my reading of The King of Madison Avenue, David Ogilvy and the Making of Modern Advertising, by Kenneth Roman, I traveled back in time to an era long gone but to be forever remembered—the 1960s when so much changed so quickly. As John F. Kennedy presided over the passing of “the torch from one generation to another,” a semi aristocratic Scottish man of vision was transforming how America sells, thinks, buys, drinks and lives with his creative messaged advertising ideas. This book is the story of both David Ogilvy, founder of the international advertising firm Ogilvy and Mather as well as the modern concept of billion-dollar multi-media “branding.” It is a concept that permeated all areas—from baby powder to celebrities to financial services to politicians. In fact, in the last presidential election Obama’s campaign was about enhancing the “Obama brand.” If only David Ogilvy, who died in 1999, were alive to see it. What a story this is. The young man who gets the Cs in prep school returns years later

extremely successful to tell the lads that even C students can achieve great things. The Oxford dropout turned to selling stoves and learned the art of the sale, and the importance of understanding the thought process of the housewife— perhaps the ultimate consumer. It was Ogilvy who wrote the copy, “When a Rolls Royce is traveling 60 MPH the loudest noise you hear is the electric clock. We have our engineers working on that too.” The wit, that line perhaps defines the sublime story of a man who went to “Fettes,” the same prep school that Ian Fleming’s fictional secret agent 007 James Bond attended. In fact, the gothic main structure there at the school was perhaps the model for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Kenneth Roman, a former Chairman and CEO of Ogilvy and Mather (which later became Ogilvy), writes with so much of an insider’s point of view of the subject and the subject matter, that you learn as you read. Quite frankly I laughed out loud every couple of pages because David Ogilvy is outrageousness. But more important may be that, while reading this book, you receive an advertising 101 lesson on the genius of Ogilvy’s vision on selling, because truth be known he wrote many sales manuals and business plans that are still in effect 70 years later. Ogilvy set the trends many of us take for granted. His style of dress is now reflected in just about every successful man. This book will help you be more successful at whatever you do because of David Ogilvy’s

insights. But it’s also a very good, easy, fast read that quite frankly you don’t want to end. The journey to ultimate success has many ironic twists and turns and accidents. As you sit next to “David” via this book, you find yourself cheering, laughing and in awe. The book is about a winner and how he won. It is a definite read.

between the vineyards and local restaurants and homeowners. Residents say events at the dozens of vineyards are overcrowding the once quiet North Fork, and filling the once peaceful air with noise. While some restaurant owners are waging war with the wineries, saying they take away restaurant business by offering food and beer in addition to just wine. Perhaps this folk festival will help ease tensions by getting a whole new genre of “Up Islanders” to fall in love with the North Fork.
