Clothesline Art Sale

The year 1946 marked the first Cannes Film Festival in France and the introduction of the bikini in California. Not to be outdone, that same year The Guild Hall in East Hampton premiered its annual clothesline art sale. This Saturday, July 31, Guild Hall will continue this tradition for the 64th time, featuring hundreds of artists each exhibiting several original oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings as well as prints, collages, photography, and small sculptures. Apropos of the name, much of the artwork is strung on clotheslines, while other works rest against fences. In 1948, one of the latter was the victim of actor Buddy Epson’s dog, which relieved himself on a painting. Epson bought the piece. Cliff Robertson and Dina Merrill were seen walking off with their purchases during the 1970s. In 1966, the event included an auction in the theater. The co-chairs that year got donated works from Fairfield Porter and Willem de Kooning, among other artists. The goal of the show hasn’t changed much. For decades, it has been an opportunity for emerging as well as critically acclaimed artists to show and sell their work. Each year, 500800 pieces are sold, as established and firsttime collectors comb the galleries in search of masterpieces. Up to 1,000 art lovers have attended this show in the past to purchase fine art at affordable prices—many works are priced at only $50, and nothing is higher than $2,000. Admission to the show is free. In addition to supporting artists by exposing their work to an enthusiastic audience, The Clothesline Art Sale also supports Guild Hall: all proceeds are split 50/50 between the artist and the organization. —Susan Galardi Artists interested in participating should call 631-324-0806 for registration information.
