Garden Parties: Longhouse and Bridge Gardens

Past Garden Party at LongHouse Reserve preservation of the Long Island natural environment. This particular location was established by Jim Kilpatric and Harry Neyens in 1988, and was donated to the Trust in 2008. The five acres of gardens feature a wide variety of natural landscape, which includes a wide variety of trees, herbs, and a rose garden, all organized into an Inner and an

Outer Garden. This summer, Bridge Gardens is also home to a series of sculptures by “nine internationally recognized artists,” in a collection known as Uncommon Grounds, as detailed on the Trust website. The rose garden is truly the focus of the July event, as the timing corresponds with the summer rose blooms. The event, which will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., will feature a wine tasting by Wölffer Estate Vineyards and a picnic dinner by Chef Kevin Macdonald. According to the Trust website, “picnic blankets will be available across the grounds for light summer dining,” a set-up that promises to be both relaxed and memorable. There will also be a silent auction and a musical performance by the Charles Certain Trio. Tickets are available at peconiclandtrust.org, or by calling 631-2833195. Whether the high class style of the well-known LongHouse Summer Gala appeals to you or your tastes are more like mine and you would prefer the more relaxed style of Bridge Gardens’ Evening of Wine and Roses, you should certainly set aside the evening of July 17 to be out in a garden.

By Allyson Zacharoff The Hamptons just can’t do anything small, can they? With a robust slate of summer benefits this year, it can be easy to lose track of all of the fabulous Hamptons parties for which our area is known. But make sure you take note of two big ones coming up tomorrow, Saturday, July 17, because they are sure to be exciting events that you won’t want to miss. Visit one of two local gardens this weekend to enjoy fine food in two beautiful locations—LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton and Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton. LongHouse Reserve is the ultimate in an upscale combination of art and nature. Every year the Reserve hosts a Summer Gala at their extensive location in East Hampton. “It’s our biggest single fundraiser of the year,” CoPresident of the LongHouse Reserve Board Dianne Benson said. But that doesn’t take away from the great event. Following last year’s innovation of having a more relaxed dining experience, the July 17 event will feature a less clustered, formal dining experience, as the guest tables and activities will be spread out “over more of the 16 acres than ever before.” “We love to give a big party,” Benson said, and LongHouse has certainly succeeded in previous years. The Reserve’s summer soirees have gained much local recognition for their unique themes. Guests will have the opportunity to show off their best black and/or white attire for this Hamptons staple summer party, as this year’s theme is black and white. The theme is formally being called “Excentrica,” which is the title of a series of George Rickey sculptures that the Reserve is currently working to obtain from his estate. The name is very different because the “evening is going to be so special and different” Benson explained. This monochromatic event will also honor longtime LongHouse support Jan Crowles (also one of Reserve founder Jack Larsen’s “greatest friends,” according to Benson) and international musician and artist Laurie Anderson. Anderson, who came for “a small (member’s-only) affair” last summer, will be performing “something that’s never been heard before,” Benson said, explaining that the piece to be performed will be a “new treatment” of some of her previous musical work. Laurie Anderson began her musical career in 1980 with “O Superman,” which achieved the second spot on the British pop charts. She has since had seven albums and toured the United States and various other countries around the world. The alumna of Barnard College and Columbia University lives in New York City and is also a composer, author, filmmaker, and photographer, and in 2002 became NASA’s first artist-in-residence. The event, which begins at 6 p.m., promises to be one to remember. With the stunning combination of amazing food, entertainment, and scenery, concluding with their first “dancing after dark” to the music of bilingual band Navegante, the party will continue, according to Benson, “until they shut us down.” For tickets, visit longhouse.org or call 631-329-3568. Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton will play host to a more relaxed event on the same evening, July 17. This beautiful location is owned by Peconic Land Trust, a local organization that works to ensure the
